Mac sleeping while iTunes is streaming videos

I recently noticed my mac goes to sleep while iTunes is streaming video to my AppleTV or my other Mac (using Home Sharing). Extremely annoying. It never did this before. What could cause this issue?
I have recently moved my entire library to an external disk. Can this be the issue? Maybe the disk spins down after a period of inactivity, and then MacOSX thinks the mac is inactive and goes to sleep.
Or might there be other causes?

Hi
Hopefully, this article http://www.macworld.com/article/49080/2006/01/lockscreen.html can provide some assistance.

  • Sleep while iTune is streaming ...

    Hi,
While looking to a movie streaming from iTunes on my Apple TV 2, the movie stopped. This seem to be related to the fact that my iMac goes to sleep while streaming to my Apple TV 2 ?
Shouldn't iTunes prevent the sleep process while streaming ? Does anyone have an idea what is not configured correctly ?
    Regards.

yes. the imac needs to stay awake.

no it wouldn't as itunes it not technically doing anything, it's the appletv that is reading from the itunes library. you will need to adjust your sleep settings in system preferences.

  • Computer sleeps while iTunes is playing

Just like the title says, my Mac goes to sleep even when iTunes is playing.  This is pretty ludicrous.  Is there anyway to prevent this other than changing my power savings settings to never let my Mac go to sleep?  I don't want to do that, I want my computer to go to sleep when I am not using it.
This sure seems like a bug.  I am running the newest version of iTunes as well as Lion.  Thanks for all your help.
My current energy saver settings are:
    Computer Sleep:  15 min
    Display Sleep:  15 min
Put hard disks to sleep when possible - yes
wake for network access - yes
allow power button to put the computer to sleep - yes
start up automatically after a power failure - no
restart automaticall if the computer freezes - no
Again, I would rather not have to change these settings in order to keep iTunes playing.  Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks,
    Jake

Jake, did you find any solution? I'm having exactly the same problem, though I just upgraded to OSX 10.8.2. I have basically all the same settings as you have. In fact I did try unchecking the "put hard disk to sleep whenever possible" for a while, but didn't help. Still goes to sleep after about 1 hour of otherwise inactivity (i.e only itunes playing).  This has got to be a bug, and seems to be affecting a lot of people.  I'll keep an eye on this topic.
    Thanks.

  • Mac 10.4.9 WONT stream videos

My Mac thinks its a good idea to not stream anymore. It skips a lot. Completely baffling me. it used to work fine. Tried updates, uninstalling Flash, reinstalling Flash, restarting computer, deleting files, switching browser(currently using FireFox). I tried it all. Any help on maybe browser setting, computer setting, anything.
Also having many other issues, possible that its all related?? Problems are no spotlight searching, it just spins. it cant find its own internal speaker, though it beeps when you turn it on, and last but CERTAINLY not least, it only starts up in safe mode...

Hi MrFleshCage, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
    Any improvement?

  • I am finally buying a TV. Should I try and run my mac to the TV for streaming video or just get a wifi enabled tv?

Also what TV is the best to get? I will not be getting cable so would like to be able to use my wireless internet or my mac to get the content to the t.v. set. I would like to be able to do this wirelessly, is that possible? Sit on the couch with my mac in my lap and command the t.v. set ten feet away? Be able to Skype with family/friends and see them on the t.v. and use the camera on my mac etc.. etc...

The best TV to get IMO is the Sony Bravia series with anti-glare screens and their faster refresh rates.
You can tell the anti-glare, there is no shine/reflection on the screen which causes blank spots when your trying to see a important game.
I will not be getting cable so would like to be able to use my wireless internet or my mac to get the content to the t.v. set.
Forget buring out your expensive Mac and Superdrive to drive the TV, get
1: A Playstation with BlueRay (ideal!)
2: AppleTV or Roku, (optional) only $69
3: Airport or Airport Exterme Router or Toslink cable
4: HDMI cable, you can get them online a heck of a lot less expensive than in the stores.
5: Optional TV wall mount for HDTV's Much nicer having your TV up higher at eye level than looking down at it on a table.
The Playstation will allow you to play BlueRay movies, which on your Bravia and a 5.1 -7.1 surround sound system from Harmon Kardon would make a very sweet home theater setup (I know)
Also you install Netflix on any of #1 or #2 and for $8 a month stream all sorts of movies and TV shows, most a little dated but still good and worth a mere $8. I would go for the Roku as it's less expensive and has more TV services than the AppleTV. Both have a remote.
Next the Airport has a stereo audio output plug which you can connect to the TV (RCA breakout cable) and stream music from your Mac via WiFi.
If your a audiophile then connect the Toslink mini to Toslink optical on the HK surround sound system from your Mac (the stereo outport doubles as a Toslink mini) and enable the various modes to fill your room with glorious sound.
The HK system can take 2.0 channel iTunes music and turn it into 5.1 even 7.1, althought it won't be true surround sound, the music flows from all speakers, it's really nice (and powerful) with the 100 watt speakers and 200 watt subwoofer. You get to hear the TRUE sound of your ITMS music, not the lousy iPhone/iPod quality. (crap)
My neighbors are very nice and I only blast it when I know they are not home.
It's bad to place undo wear and tear on a many thousand dollar Mac when you can use much less expensive, more easily, cheaper replaced items that are better tailored than a Mac to stream/power a TV it's not designed to do.
With a Mac your likely going to want to move it, hookkng and unhooking is a pain in the behind. Not mentioning wearing out your ports, collecting dust instead of being in a case protected when not in use.

  • WARNING! NO other video player BUT itunes will stream video to Apple TV from ipad

Despite the lists and others telling you otherwise...you only get audio . NO video.
    I have ipad 2 with 4.3.3.
The only option you have is to update to ios 5 and mirror. Which is less than ideal, and also gets a lot of interference from other networks.
A truly dissapointing limitation of this technology, as itunes is very limted in playing different video formats.
Just a heads up if your thinking of getting an apple tv 2 for this purpose.
I spent the money and now just have a useless 'netflix' player.

Unfortunately I'm just an unpaid volunteer just like everyone else here who tries to help other users.
I have several Apple TV's at work and at home and they all work as expected. In testing various problems raised by other users I am able to deliberately introduce interference and replicate the problems that some face, however interference is your problem not Apple's if you don't set up your network to avoid interference, there is nothing that I or Apple can do about it.
I have created a User Tip to list Apps that have been tested with Video Airplay, if you have any Apps that you have tested please leave details in the comments at the bottom of the User Tip or email me if you don't have commenting privileges.
I note from that list that VLC streame (the paid version) is one such app that does work with AirPlay.

  • Quicktime crashes while watching streaming video

    Hi,
    Who can help me?
Quicktime 7.2 often unexpectedly quits while I watch streaming video.
I tried - installing quicktime again, - using cable for internet instead of wireless, made a new account on my mac - got rid of the qt preferences -.. nothing works, it still quits while I watch online video.
    who has the solution?

i am having the same problem, except when i try to open it using itunes it also closes down and gives me that error message. I also tried opening the files with nero and the problem occurs there also. i wish there was a fix for this because quicktime 6 worked great.

  • Apple TV streaming videos but not music from iTunes

My ATV (latest updates) will stream video (and audio from that video) from my itunes on my MacBook Pro, but no music from the music section of itunes. I'm not on a VPN or anything.  I can see the ATV option from itunes and I can select it for a split second, but then it defaults back to the computer speakers with no sound ever going to ATV.  My ipad and iphone stream perfectly well to my AppleTV.  My accounts and home sharing are all set up OK. Music is currently checked and playing on Mac. Why will it stream video (and the audio that is with the video), but no songs?
    Thanks for any suggestions!

If your ATV is connected by wi-fi, switch it to an Ethernet cable and see if that solves the problem. If the wi-fi NIC is failing it will start dropping the network connection at random and that will cause it to drop out of iTunes.

  • While using mac as wireless router ; How to make Mac sleep?

    Hi all.
I set up my macbook to act as a wireless router [sharing it's wireless signal, via the "Sharing" settings in System Preferences]
    using this guide
    http://www.macinstruct.com/node/118
I am wondering how to make my mac sleep while this wireless-sharing setting is enabled?
Since I have enabled this setting, the mac will not sleep, however, the mac will sleep when I disable it.
I am also wondering ; [if it is possible to make the mac sleep while this setting is enabled], can I still use the mac as a wireless router even while it is asleep?
Or does it need to be awake to function as a router?
Thanks very much in advance for any help!

Thank you very much everybody for your answers.

    and
    BobTheFisherman
Yes, I kind of thought what you are saying would be the case.
It makes "sense" that when the computer is asleep, so are all it's functions,
but I *WISH* there was an option to keep the airport functioning even while the computer is asleep.
Bob, I don't think having the OPTION to leave the airport on while mac sleeps would defeat the power-saving feature of the computer (:
I know the "best" way to share wifi is with a router, but for me, a router just another piece of plastic I don't need. All I need to do is share wifi in a small space [my room] from my mac to my iPad and ipod touch.
I like to use my ipad as a reader, and when I am reading, I may be sitting down for many hours just reading from the ipad. It doesn't make sense to leave the mac running during these long periods just for a wireless signal, so I may sadly buy a router ):
Anyway, I get what you are all saying, and thank you for telling me the current limits of this function.
    Cheers! (:

  • Is there any way to change a title for streaming video in QT Pro?

I'm trying to follow several streaming feeds at the same time, all with unhelpful titles.
For example, this is the URL I'm using to view the ROV 2 feed for Discoverer Enterprise.
    http://mfile.akamai.com/97892/live/reflector:21145.asx?bkup=21327
which results in the title, reflector:21145.asx?bkup=21327.

Actually, what I was wanting to know is if I could just change the title while watching the streaming video rather than saving the feed. I can do this in a VLC playlist but I can't seem to figure out how to open multiple windows for feeds in VLC. Also, VLC doesn't let me go back in the cached feed to see and/or save snippets which I can easily do in QuickTime Pro.
I have been able to save the streaming feeds like this although I have the $30 upgrade for Flip4Mac which I needed to export for YouTube. There may be a way to do the same thing with something free but I know less than nothing about video and this worked.
Move the playhead slider to start of snippet
Type "i" to get slider for start of snippet
Move the playhead slider to end of snippet
Type "o" to get slider for end of snippet
Adjust the "i" and "o" sliders if needed.
Right click on the feed and choose copy.
Go to File -> New Player (command N)
Go to Edit -> Paste (command V)
Go to File -> Save (command S) and save as self-contained movie
After that I use the file I just saved with the directions on YouTube to export it to a file that will process on their site.
Here is an example that shows a ROV being lowered from the deck of its mothership into the water.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsYinE5cNx8
I saved it from this streaming feed which I loaded into QuickTime Pro (File -> Open URL or command U and paste URL). I seem to recall I needed the free Flip4Mac to view this in QuickTime.
    http://mfile.akamai.com/97892/live/reflector:47175.asx?bkup=21144
I'm all set with what I want to do other than being able to change the titles on the feeds as I'm watching them in QuickTime Pro.

  • Downloading streaming video...

I have a questions for all of you quicktime and vid experts.
I am familiar with viewing streaming video through my web browser and for the most part, it is easy to download it by either pressing and holding down your mouse button or option clicking and then saving. But once in a while I get streaming video that wont let me do anything. I have heard of stand alone applications or perhaps a plugin for quicktime that would let you do this. I have quicktime pro but don't use it for anything technical short of just viewing movies, so if it has the ability to do this...then Im not sure how to do it.
Sorry for the lengthy question and thanks in advance.
    Eddy

Streaming files can't be saved using QuickTime Pro. You'll need a screen capture utility (Snapz Pro) to record them as they play.
Some downloaded files are "protected" as save disabled by the authors or the html code of the page.
You should be able to tell which you can save by Control-clicking on the file in the browser window. A dialog will open (after the file has completely downloaded) giving you some options for saving the file.

  • Streamed videos that cause crashes preceded by strange 'scratching' noise

I sometimes hear an odd scratching sound on my MacBook while watching a streamed video on the Internet. This inevitably signals a crash about to happen -- which then occurs so immediately that I rarely have time to abort the video before it does.
I am wondering what exactly is going on with that scratching sound.
Is it just something akin to 'static' or 'feedback' from a poorly-produced video? Even if it is, why would that cause (or signal) a crash?
Could anything in the video (including any rogue elements put into the video stream by a hacker, etc.) be doing any harm to the MacBook hard drive or other hardware?
I'm pretty sure I've had this happen both in Safari and Firefox, so I don't think it's browser-related.
    Thanks.

    BDAqua wrote:
Hi, without a link to one that does that, it's impossible to tell much... might be trying to do some sound it can't.
What format are these viudeos... wmv, Flash, etc.?
I'm not sure about the format. I guess I could keep an eye out for 'the next time' and note the URL.
I'm not really concerned about the crashes, just the scratching sound. I thought someone here might know +*whether streamed content can do anything harmful to the hardware of the computer it's being viewed on*+. That's my main concern.
BTW, this happens only in the circumstances I've descrived -- i.e., with those videos that produce that scratching sound and then cause my computer to crash. It's not a sound I ever hear otherwise.
    Thanks for your reply.

  • Unattended recording of streaming video is destroyed by your incredibly annoying pop-ups for Firefox updates, etc. How do we stop these ?

The opening sentences say it all. Its infuriating to go away while I record streaming video, and return in an hour or so to find just about the entire recording covdered by the idiotic Fire Fox popup for updating. I have the option marked to allow NO popups. This does not apply to Firefox??

    #Click the menu button->Options.
    #Click on the Advanced tab.
#Under that select the Update tab.
    #Select never check for updates
    #Click OK

  • Freezes when streaming videos

I have brand new MSI GT60 laptop with GTX870M ,i7-4800MQ CPU and 8gb ram.
There is a random 2-3 second freeze every few minutes while i am streaming videos(any site
CNN.com - Breaking News, U.S., World, Weather, Entertainment & Video News, youtube, etc). they don't play smoothly at all , they play so laggy.  during this freeze audio does not loop
    or freeze, it continues normally.
    i have tried the following
    1. i have updated all the drivers video, network, sound.
    2. Tried a different browser (both Firefox and Chrome).
    3. Used the killer cleaner and installed the pure drivers.
    4. Tried the killer package from MSI support page, recovery disc and the version from Qualcomm site.
    5. Gave up and installed a brand new windows 8.1 as a secondary boot, same issue.
    6. tried disconnecting all USB devices and everything , still freezes.
Seriously i don't know what other options i have
This particular issue could not be a temp thing, since it starts right from the moment i switch on the laptop. Also i don't notice any lags when i am playing games or playing videos using some video player(BS player/VLN)
Its not an internet issue as well, videos would have completely buffered already but would still freeze.
Looks like a flash player issue, i have tried 3 versions of flash player (11,13,14 ) all have this issue, i just cant solve this.
What else can i do? Could it be a hardware issue ?

I did try different browser (Chrome and IE), both have this issue
I have also run some traces, uploaded trace files here
