Mac Sound Volume Resetting?

I have just got myself a new Mini Mac and I have been setting it up for past few days. So far the only odd thing I have noticed is that every time I restart or shut down the volume will reset back to about 60% even though I have turned it up or down, is this normal or is there some setting that I have missed somewhere?
Its not really much of a problem just a bit annoying as I have to turn up the volume each time I open up iTunes.
Has any one else had this problem or is there some strange Unix command I can tweak somewhere?
Cheers for any help!

Here is a solution/workaround.
1. Open up Script Editor.
2. Type in the following:
set volume 7
3. Save as type "application" with the name "SetVolumeToMax" (or similar).
4. Open up System Preferences->Accounts->Login Items.
5. Add your new script as a hidden login item.
Possible volume values are in the range 0 to 7.

  • Sound volume resets at reboot since upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard

Hi, i upgraded my computers this week end (iMac, macbook, mini) from Tiger to Snow Leopard. All went great except one little bug : the sound volume resets at each reboot, for example on the iMac it is always at minimum after each reboot. This occurs on all 3 computers.
Do you meet the same "problem"? Do you know any solution except the clean install?
    Thanks

Also, if you hold shift when clicking the volume, you can recalibrate your alert sounds level in the same way. At last, now my mac chimes at a civil level when I switch it on!
This doesn't work for me, but what it does do is play the alert volume feedback "pop" when that option is deselected in the Audio system preference & not play it when the option is selected. Thank you for that, even if it wasn't what was intended. Since I sometimes work with Macs connected to high power sound systems, it is good to know about -- you can't imagine how loud the "pop" can be until you hear it through a 20,000 watt concert PA!

  • My system sound volume resets to 100%  at shut down.  Why? And how can I fix it? Tried PRAM

Just in the past few days my iMac has decided it needs to reset its system sound volume to 100#% every time I shut it down, so it can blast me off my chair when I start it up next.  No amount of adjusting the volume, from system prefs or menu bar will keep it where I want it.  Tried resetting PRAM and system manager.  Nothing.  It just will not hold the volume setting.
Has anyone got any ideas for fixing this?
I'm using Lion - it isn't on the choice list of OSs.

Well gee thanks Baltwo, but I don't need instruction in the use of drop-down menus.  Had my OS been listed when i hit the drop-down, I'd surely have hit on my OS had it been there.
But it wasn't, you see..  Why? I don't know.  Perhaps the display problem I've benn having with my iMac since last August.  The display problem that the geniuses at my local Apple store can't fix because they can't decide if my machine needs a new  Vcard or not.  But they can sure keep my computer for a week playing with it and charging me for  it.
Sorry, but I'm tired of zero help from Apple with issues and irrelevant rsponses to my requests for help.

  • Sound volume reset on restart.

Has anyone else notice that every time you restart the next boot up resets your volume to half way. I’m not sure I can really call it a bug but it is annoying.
I never had this issue with regular Leopard. Can any one else confirm their machine doing the same thing.

    HI,
    Try Resetting the PRAM

  • OUTPUT volume resets to high after reboot

I turn the OUTPUT volume down then shut the computer off but when I boot it up the OUTPUT volume is hi again. I have reset pram, repaired permissions and still the same.
Must be a pref bad somewhere.
There are no stuck keys on the keyboard

It may be a bug, but it obviously does not affect everyone. It does not happen on my older Intel iMac. And there is a +Early 2009+ Mac mini in the house, 2.0 GHz (same as and in Dah•veed's profile); it does not happen on it either.
When you did the test of setting volume low (or muted) with external speakers disconnected, and restarting with the external speakers disconnected, was the startup sound from the built-in speakers low (or muted), or was it already reset and loud. This will better determine when the volume reset takes place. If it's already loud, then it takes place during the previous logoff and actions that take place before restarting (or shutting down), or during the initial few seconds of startup (before the startup sound). If it's still low (or muted), then the sound volume reset takes place at some point after the startup sound, but before startup completes.
As another test, if you set the volume low, then log out and log back in (instead of restarting), does the volume stay low or does it get reset to the higher volume.
And as one more test, create a new admin user account in System Preferences Accounts pane
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8235.html
Log out and log in to the new account. Go to System Preferences Accounts pane and set it for +Automatic login+ (If you don't use automatic login normally, then you don't need to set it). Now try doing the same test, except from this account instead of your normal account. Is there any difference in the volume setting being retained?

  • How to adjust the sound volume in small increments in Mac OS 10.7 (Lion)?

I use a Macbook that has dedicated sound volume buttons (F11 and F12).
In Mac OS 10.6 I was able to adjust the sound volume in smaller increments (1/4th of a square) by pressing SHIFT + OPTION + VOLUME UP/DOWN.
This stopped working after the update to 10.7. Any ideas?

Unfortunately they did away with this feature in Lion.  Hard to understand why.
You can with something like AudioHijackPro manage your System sound to a much higher degree. A very versatile piece of software.

  • Default Sound Volume after starting Mac after Windows?

Ok, so on my Macbook Pro, when i start up my computer in Windows XP, and then back to Mac, my volume is always half way up, which sometimes i forget, and something goes off in class and its not cool. Is there a way to change it so when it starts up it always is muted? I know if u restart it from Mac to Mac, it stays at the same level, but Windows seems to mess with this.

  • Sound volume

    Hi,
I originally asked this question in the tiger discussion, but didn't receive an answer.
Is it possible to reset the audio on my mac so that the sound volume of audio and video clips and movies is raised? I regularly encounter video with audio volume that is too low, even at its maximum, and even though I have the volume level in System Preferences set to the maximum. I find the problem in iTunes, DVDs, QT, and YouTube, etc.
    Thanks, Caoim

With QT movies and iTunes songs you can boost the volume in the individual file's prefs. But for the system (your PB) you can not. Your only option is to buy a pair of external speakers.

  • IPod Mini sound/volume is as soft as a mouse now

    PLEASE HELP!
I have just got a replacement set of earphones sent to me by apple because the original one just stopped working all of the sudden. I noticed that my iPod mini's sound/volume is about 50% softer than when I originaly got it. I've tried using euPOD and goPOD and also the slider trick but it still doesn't take the volume back to the good old days. I know that it is probably because of the stupid new 26-03-2006 update with the volume limit on it, but i've also tried restoring the iPOD but to no avail either. I've tried everything already and nothing has worked. Does anybody know how I can get around this or I'll just have to throw my Mini in the trash and never buy anything from apple again! I also noticed that the volume slider doesn't actualy change the volume loudness until it gets past halfway.....so it doesn't actualy get softer or louder until I'm about halfway thru. I can't see why apple would want to implement such a ridiculous limit on what was essentialy a very good product.

    Gary,
There is a lot I don't know yet, but I definitely managed to raise the volume by cutting off the sound check and the equalizer when importing new stuff. As a test, I can now hear the words in an audiobook, although the volume is still on maximum for my iPod and car tape player. Unfortunately the old stuff still sounds too faint. (Is this iPod actually updating?)
There is a problem with my car tape player. I haven't bought a head cleaning kit yet, but plan to do so. I connected an FM transmitter and tested the sound -- it was a lot louder. (In my area, I cannot use an FM transmitter in the city because of FM interference. No empty stations. So I either need earphones or to make the tape player work. Or a new car
I don't know yet whether it's the Sound Check or Equalizer that makes the difference. I don't think I ever used Sound Enhancer.
You can raise the volume by selecting songs, going to "Get Info" and resetting the volume bar. This seems to make it louder on the Mac speakers. I cannot tell that anything is getting through to the iPod -- I simply don't hear it yet.
I don't know yet if importing when using Sound Check does anything permanent to the volume of the song. I hope not.

  • Self changing sound volume

For some unknown reason the volume setting on my mini seems to randomly want to change all by itself. I normally like to have the system volume set to 75% (12 out of 16 spots on the scale) and change the volume through a set of speakers, although every now and then I find that it's reduced by itself to 56% (9 out of 16 spots). The drop in volume is awfully consistent.
Has anyone else noticed this? Or is this a "safety" feature so that will maximise sound volume between restarts or something.

I pondered that although if that were the case all Macs that come with FrontRow would show the same behaviour.
My best guess is that it's like my mother's car stereo. Everytime you turn off the engine the stereo will reset itself to a lower volume to ensure that the next time you turn it on your ears aren't blasted out. Given the higher likelihood that a Mac mini is connected to a home stereo/cinema unit this might be Apple's thinking.
    Who knows… it's just annoying as ****!

  • Sound being reset

Recently (last couple of months) when I power up my Mac I've noticed that the volume on my sound is at 0 (no sound). I can
reset the volume level with no problem, and it stays fine until I power off the Mac. Once I turn the Mac on again, the sound
    volume is reset to 0.
This isn't a major issue, more of an annoyance than anything else.
Any clue as to what is going on? Other than I need to reset the PRAM, that is...

Not a battery problem.  Check this:
Power On Self-Test Beep Definition - Part 2
Look inside, particularly near the dimm slots for any lit diagnostic leds.
Does the power button led have a blinking sequence?

  • Change the sound volume increment?

Is there a way to change how much the Apple remote and keyboard increments/decrements the system sound volume?
Let me explain... I have the Bose Companion 5 sound system. It comes with a little desktop controller to adjust and mute the volume. The desktop volume controller is nice and all, but it's completely independent from the Mac OS volume controls. I could crank the Bose control all the way up, but doing so makes it such that even the lowest Mac OS volume setting is still louder than I'd like (easily audible through the walls), and quiet white noise is heard even if the Mac is muted. Setting the Bose volume to something in the middle or lower limits my volume flexibility when listening to music and I come across that occasional song that I want cranked louder. I know I'm whining, but hear me out.
I recently bought a new desk and made an interesting discovery while setting everything back up. Somehow I had forgotten to connect the Bose volume controller. When I grabbed the Apple remote to adjust the system volume, it seemed to directly adjust the volume on the Bose system (this setup can get VERY loud this way), and no white noise when the Mac is muted. I love the idea of leaving it like this, but even the first notch above mute (via keyboard or remote) is pretty loud. Finite control is possible from the volume preferences panel, but who wants to open that every time to change the volume?

I don't know if these two AppleScripts will help you or not but give them a try.
Place them in your Applications folder or your AppleScript folder (within your Applications folder), then drag them into your Dock.
They are background scripts so you will not see them launch in the Finder.
Have iTunes playing or some other app playing when you test them.

  • Output sound volume

The output sound volume on my system (about one month old imac) sounds low. As I remember my old G5 imac playing sounds on a webpage with system volume (the top line on the screen) and browser volume (set within the browser) at a very load volume.
Now, I have set both volume controls to max to hear the sound at all.
Is there some way I can test the sound?

Hi, go to MIDI SetUp (Applications-Utilities) or Spotlight Midi!
Look for the Configure Speakers Box ~ you can check out the sound from each speaker...
(A recent post, suggested keeping the Mac volume @ Low & setting the external speakers to High)

  • Volume Resets to Loud When Starting Up

Each time I startup my computer, the volume is always too loud—usually all but 3 of the blocks in the volume bar are white. Normally it was the same level of volume at which I left it when I shut it down.
I have tried resetting my PRAM to resolve the problem, as I read that stores volume information, but it didn't make a difference.
I haven't made any hardware changes to my computer that would coincide with the change. The last change I made was getting a new battery, but that was a few months before this started happening.
Any ideas? Your help is very much appreciated!

After thinking about this...to be honest. You'll have to download the video edit the sound volume and do a save...
