Mac Startup Disc Keeps Reverting to Windows

I have a Mac Mini with bootcamp installed and Windows XP installed on my bootcamp partition.
In the Mac startup disc settings, I have MacOS selected as the startup disc. Even so, my machine will periodically boot into Windows XP even though I have not changed the startup disc. When this happens, in Windows I go to the Bootcamp console, select MacOS as the startup disc, restart the computer and it boots into MacOs. Within about four or five days, however, the system AGAIN reverts to Windows XP on bootup BY ITSELF. Has anyone had this problem?

More of a workaround than a solution - But when I used Boot Camp for Windows before switching to Parallels, I would occasionally get the same problem (although randomly) and I just became used to holding down the option key at startup and pressing enter after a few seconds so that I guaranteed the Mac would boot up to OS X.
Maybe try repairing disk permissions from Disk Utility? If Boot Camp has any .plist or similar files (not sure) you might want to try trashing those too.

  • MAC startup disc has no more space available for application memory.

I have a new mac, very little memory being used, and only a few programs being run...safari, i-tunes, etc. This error window keeps coming up "Your Mac OS X Start up disc has no more space available for application memory. To aviod problems, quit any applications and close windows you are not using. removing files you are not using from your start up disc will help". This window will come up with only finder and safari running, no other applications running. This has been going on for several weeks now off and on. What is causing this and what can I do?

I've had safari, mail and itunes open for a bit this afternoon. Terminal is showing (0) pages in and (0) pages out. I'll continue to keep them open and see what happens and report back if it changes! Here's the rest of the data showing at this time.

  • Keep getting a popup window stating" startup disc almost full, need to delete files"

keep getting a popup window stating" startup disc almost full, need to delete files", what can i do to help with this, i generally have only photos in iphoto, some imovies, and a small amount of documents

You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
Other things you can do to gain space.
Once you have around 15 GBs regained, do a search, download and install OmniDisk Sweeper.
This app will help you locate files that you can move/archive and/or delete from your system.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

after upgrading to mountain lion i keep getting an error message saying my startup disc is full. it shouldnt be full because there is barely anything on there and i was running windows with bootcamp prior to this with no issues. my computer now freezes and programs close randomly. The usual command for opening windows with bootcamp doesnt work. once in restarted my computer after it froze and it rebooted in windows automatically. i really just want to know if there is a way to take the upgrade off my laptop because it is very annoying.

    Hi Memalyn
Essentially, the bare issue is that you have a 500GB hard drive with only 10GB free. That is not sufficient to run the system properly. The two options you have are to move/remove files to another location, or to install a larger hard drive (eg 2TB). Drive space has nothing to do with SMC firmware, and usually large media files are to blame.
My first recommendation is this: download and run the free OmniDiskSweeper. This will identify the exact size of all your folders - you can drill down into the subfolders and figure out where your largest culprits are. For example, you might find that your Pictures folder contains both an iPhoto Library and copies that you've brought in from a camera but are outside the iPhoto Library structure. Or perhaps you have a lot of purchased video content in iTunes.
If you find files that you KNOW you do not need, you can delete them. Don't delete them just because you have a backup, since if the backup fails, you will lose all your copies.
Don't worry about "cleaners" for now - they don't save much space and can actually cause problems. Deal with the large file situation first and see how you get on.
Let us know what you find out, and if you manage to get your space back.
    Matt

Yes you will need to install the apple drivers for win vista. When you boot from a cold start, have you tried holding down the option key to choose which OS to boot from? If you have then, you could try going into startup options from the mac side and choose win vista if it appears. That could be risky though, as you mentioned you do not have the mac install disk. If problems arise you may need the mac install disk to undo the changes.

  • Startup disc full after file transfer from old mac

    Hi everyone,
I had a Macbook pro that was about 6 years old until I bought a new Macbook Air. I tried to transfer my files via the migration assistant but it didn't work, so I backed everything up onto an external hard drive and then transferred everything via that onto my new macbook air. All the files saved onto my desktop in a file called "Olivia's MacBook Pro", but none of the files are directly linked to my new air (i.e., I can access my old pictures through my desktop but they aren't in my new iPhoto). The issue I'm having is that I often get a popup that says my startup disc is full. I followed directions on old threads that said to download omnidiscsweeper, which I did, and all the room is being taken up by that folder of all my old stuff on my desktop (~185 GB).
My question is- do I just have too much stuff? Is there a way to keep my pictures and such on my new computer without always getting this error message and having to shut down different applications? Please help! I am not very computer savvy
    Thanks so much for reading.
PS- appx 76 GB of my computer storage is movies...but I don't have any movies saved on here that I know of... another 72 GB is "Other".
    Thanks!!

Frankly, You'll probably waste more time and effort than if you just got a Firewire cable. I'm pretty sure you'll need to have a cross connect Ethernet Cable (I usually make my own, not sure where you'd buy one) to connect them via ethernet, and even then you still have to mess around with getting them to talk to each other. Other option is to plug both computers into a hub or switch, or better yet a router.
Another option is to spend $20 on a usb adapter that can connect any drive to your Mac. [Here is one that I have|http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo =2329300&CatId=3770] from Tiger Direct that works quite well.

What files did you transfer to the new computer?
It sounds that there is a problem with the file that stores the preferences.
Delete possible user.js and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release.

  • HT3986 Mac Installation Disc after installing Windows 7 on BootCamp

    Hi,
I juest installed Windows 7 using BootCamp. The next thing I need to do is download the Mac installation software to load onto Windows.
My Macbook Pro with OS X 10.8.4 didn't come with the disc. I can't use my wifi on the windows side presumably due to needing OS X on there.
I need to download the OS X installation software onto my memory stick so I can load it onto Windows.
Could someone please be kind enough to give me the link to the correct download. I've tried looking throught Apple site but can't seem to find it anywhere.
    Thanks in advance.

Also when i click the download button for the OS X Recovery Disc Assistant v1.0 on the apple website I just get this message:

lower your font size unless you have difficulty
    MS Security Essentials is excellent
Then again maybe time to investigate Windows 8 RP (which uses Defender)

I have a MacBook Pro running mac osx 10.8, Screen saver keeps reverting to national geographic photos.

Just found this solution on another website. I tried it and it works. No more polar bears and Savannahs!
Apparently if you put it in the folder called "Desktop Pictures" it will work.
So, copy whatever folder of pictures you would like to use as your screensaver and then go to:
    Macintosh HD>Library > Desktop Pictures
Paste your folder into this folder called "Desktop Pictures".
You may have to enter the administrator code (the password you use to open your mac usually).
Then, go back to System Preferences, go to Desktop and Screensaver, click on the Screensaver tab on the top, go to the drop down menu beside "Source" (under the picture) and click on "Choose Folder". Navigate to the Macintosh HD>Library>Desktop Pictures and then click on the folder you just pasted in there. Click "Choose" and you're all set.

Do you mean that all changes you made to your files are lost, or do you mean that changes to your preferences are lost? For example, pick any small file, make a copy of it, and put the copy on your Desktop. After rebooting, is the copy still there?

  • Mac Mini - Disc Warrior - Will not respond to new startup Disc

    Problem:
I ran disc warrior and rebuilt and replaced the directory simply as maint and to deal with a few crash issues. After quitting Disc Warrior I held the option key (on a new low profile Apple Keyboard - wired) to open startup disc assistant. Computer continues to boot from the disc. I cannot find a single way to change the startup disc from within Disc Warrior either.
I then determined that there is no power going to the keyboard until after the time period needed when holding the option key or even trying to use the firmware keyboard shortcut. I determined this by pressing the caps lock key. The green light on the caps lock does not come on until well after the initial startup sound.
Is there a way to open terminal when the computer is booted from a disc? Is there a way around this? I've tried unplugging every peripheral except the keyboard and the power issue still persists.
No matter what I do, the computer still boots from the disc. I tried opening system prefs from the apple menu but it is grayed out.
Any help would be great. Thanks

Unfortunately, this seems to be an issue with the new aluminum keyboards: they do not seem to allow you to access the Startup Manager. Do you have a wired mouse? If so, you could plug it directly to the Mini (just to be safe), start the Mini, press and hold the mouse button right after the startup chime until the CD ejects. The Mini should then boot to Mac OS X.
If you have an Intel Mini, it may be even easier: pressing and holding your Apple Remote's "menu" button right after the startup chime should have the same effect as using the Option key on a keyboard.

  • Mac mini (mid 2010)  - showing iPod Shuffle as startup disc icon?!

    Hey folks,
Here's a curious one... I have a new Mac mini (2.4GHz/2GB/Mid 2010). When I hold down alt at startup to select a startup disc, it shows a 1st gen iPod Shuffle icon as Macintosh HD instead of the standard hard drive icon!
Anyone know if this is likely to be part of a bigger problem (ie. more than just a graphical glitch), and what I might be able to do to sort it out? Have zapped PRAM, repaired disk permissions...
Thanks in advance for any help or guidance!
