Mac suddenly slow

Okay, need some ideas.  My info  iMac 2010, 499.25 GB, available 82.08 GB    Using 10.9.3 processor 3.06 GHz Intel Core 13  Memory 4 GB 1333
I'm not new to Macs and have at least 2 in the house since the plus days in 1984.  I know my away around them.  But my mac is suddenly operating strangely slow.   If you try to open a folder or go to the menu bar open an application,  the cursor will spin and just keep spinning, sometimes several minutes before opening the file.  It may work fine for a while, opening everything quickly.  Then suddenly it will start it again.  I don't know what to check.
It started not long ago and I know of nothing different done or changed or added to just before it started.  I also noticed it has become worse since upgrading to  Maverick.   Any ideas?

I ran a AHT and it shows everything is fine.  I also ran disk first aid and repaired permissions.  That seems to have helped some.
Did you run AHD in extended mode 3 times back to back, if you did not then you did not really run it. While it is not the most reliable test if it must be run in extended mode and run multiple times, in order to do a thorough check. Also your HD is dangerously full.
Finally post an EtreCheck report so we can get an idea of  how your system is configured, once you have then we can look for obvious issues.

    Seems to have worked.
We hooked up the external HD, turned on Time Machine, and everything backed up.
Then we ran Disk Utility. The disk repair required the reboot thing and took two tries. Then repaired permissions. Also updated Flash.
Seems to be running okay now, but we have ordered a new SSD (as well as a new iMac 5k ). We use multiple computers so hoping we can get a couple more years of use out of this old computer as it ran fast and fine until this problem.
Thank you so much for your help! We really appreciate it.

  • Mac suddenly slow. Help!!!

I know dowloading torrents is risky but I've been doing it for months without any problems so this thanksgiving weekend I downloaded a bunch of movies because the school I'm at doesn't allow is to use torrents and file sharing stuff. Everything was fine until about Saturday evening when my computer starting running slow so I quit everything and restarted my computer (it hadn't been turned off since thanksgiving day). After I restarted my mac it started working fine. I turned it off Sunday afternoon and turned it on again that night. I started watching on of the movies that I downloaded (torrent). My computer froze and I had to force it to turn off (I know that's not exactly good for the computer). Ever since the. It's been incredibly slow. Things take forever to open and load. The computer freezes occasionally for a couple minutes and the music being played off of iTunes pauses and starts playing unexpectedly here and there and it makes it hard to listen to music. What do I do to get my computer speed back again?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
How much empty space is left on your hard drive? It could be slow if you are running out of space--you need to keep 15%-20% free. If you have less free space than this, you need to remove some stuff from your drive to free up space. I don't know how many movies you downloaded, but they might be taking up more space than you realize.
    Good luck!
As far as what I've read there's not really a percentage tagged to the amount of HD space you should leave free, that is of course unless you have a really small HD.
Below is from The X Lab.....http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/lackofram.html
As a general rule of thumb: if the Available space on the Mac OS X startup disk is less than 10 GB, it is time to free some disk space. We suggest 10 GB as an absolute minimum as this is generally the amount of free space required to reinstall Mac OS X via an Archive and Install and still preserve space for VM swap files. The more free space is better. For example, users of FileVault may want to retain more free space than that occupied by their encrypted Home folder as one requires free space larger than your encrypted Home folder in order to disable FileVault.

  • Hi all, my mac's suddenly slowed down significantly - can anyone help?

Hi there, a couple of weeks ago my mac suddenly slowed down significantly. Since then I've installed the new operating system and that's helped a little but it's still not running as it should.

  • Mac super slow all of a sudden

Ok this is a new one.  I had my iPhone plugged into my mac and wanted to eject it.  I pressed the eject icon on iTunes and seconds after I clicked safari to just surf the web.  The safari icon jumped up and down on the dock for 5 whole minutes and then it finally opened.  Ever since that incident my Mac has been ridiculously slow.  I have tried restarting it a bunch of times but no luck...I have no idea how this happened.  It was working perfectly fine before I pressed the eject button.

  • 10.7.5 suddenly slows and then freezes

My computer has just started to suddenly slow way down and then it freezes completely.  When I reboot it seems fine, for perhaps 10 minutes or half an hour, but then it starts to lock up again.  Any idea what the problem is?  Here is my EtreCheck report:
    Problem description:
Mac works perfectly normally for an hour or so and then suddenly slows and then freezes.

Well, I made it to the Apple store and they, contrary to the guys at B&H, confirmed my original suspicion and yours: that the drive was failing.  I bought a replacement drive and am restoring my time machine back up now.
I am a bit annoyed that the B&H guys got this one wrong but I have to give them credit for underselling me rather than overselling me; I do appreciate that.
Also worth mentioning is that the 3TB Seagate drive was less than 2 years old and is supposedly still under warrantee.  I am looking forward to seeing what kind of support I get from them.
So big thanks to you, Bob, for your very good suggestions.   The Apple community has come through strong for me and I appreciate it.

  • Dreamweaver suddenly slow?

Running CS4 on Mac OSX v 10.5.8, PowerPC G5, 1.5 GB RAM. Normally Dreamweaver runs fine -- not super speedy, but workable. Every now and then, it suddenly slows down. Today it's taking over a minute for the beachball to stop spinning after changing a margin for a div, or even to load a page. Everything else is closed except Firefox (and even rebooting and having nothing else open doesn't solve it.) MacFileCache-********.dat has been deleted, still no help.
When this has happened before, time has solved the problem. Except, of course, I have a final project due next week and I need to get some serious work done this weekend. I'll cry if I have to code everything by hand in a text editor... Help!
    Kathy A.

I had tried that the last time I had this same situation, with no improvement.
Since I posted, I have found one new thing that may shed light on the situation. It's only happening on pages where I have smart objects on the page. It doesn't happen every time I have a smart object, but the larger the original Photoshop files, the more likely it is to happen. I took one of the offending pages, removed all the images in a text editor (for other reasons), saved, and then accidentally opened it in Dreamweaver -- it worked like, well, a dream. Added back one smart object (small file size for the png, but large PS original file), and it took over 90 seconds to change the padding of a div on the page. Took the smart object back out, and back to normal.
The only thing I can think of at this spot is that 1.5 megs of RAM just isn't enough to work with large originals. If that's the case, I can live with the extra step of resaving png's out of Photoshop everytime I modify the original file. (Not going to throw more ram into this computer when I'm saving up for an Intel-chipped Mac.) If it's something else, I'd love to know what I'm doing that's causing it.

  • Photoshop CS5 suddenly slow.

Never seen this before. My 8 core 2.8 GHz Mac Pro has 10 GB RAM and a blank 100 GB scratch disk. Photoshop is always quick. Has been for years. Suddenly today, Photoshop is slow like molasses to open & save files. Lots of progress bars and wait cursors. Everything else on the Mac is fine. It boots quickly & normally, and other apps are happy. My boot drive, a clean installed Mountain Lion system, says S.M.A.R.T. Status: Verified. In Activity Monitor, a process with ID # 0, Kernel Task, was using 700 to 800 MB RAM, while another process, mds, with ID # 44, is using 350 MB RAM. Does anybody know what is going on?
I should add that I booted from a backup system and its copy of Photoshop was also doing the same thing. In addition, a high level troubleshooter on Apple Discussions informed me that my present level of 500 MB RAM for Kernel Task is normal. So all I know is Photoshop is suddenly slow.

I have rebooted numerous times. Interesting that you are aware of others with this issue.
I was thinking specifically of this thread:   http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1026715
There's a fair bit of noise in that thread, and at least some folks found the 13.0.1 update to fix things up or them.
You do have the 13.0.1 update, right?

  • Compressor suddenly slow

    I am using DVDsp vers.3 on a G5 dual 2.0Ghz processor with 2.5GB ram.
I use the "build in background" preference when I import a 45 minute Qt video file (16:9 anamomorphic)for encoding. I have used this basic method for several years but all of a sudden the process is very slow, taking 4 hrs or longer to encode the 45 min.video before ever beginning the muxing process. The Mac console lists a "CGContextSaveGState2" problem but I don't know if this is related to sudden slow down. Does anyone have an idea what would cause the slow down?

Nick, thank you, good idea to keep things clean. apps in the final cut studio often seem to benefit from trashing prefs, too.

  • What causes a sudden slow-down of cursor movement?

I'm laying out a multi-authored volume in CS6, and when I get to one specific chapter, the cursor suddenly slows down and will barely work. Is there some sort of hidden formatting in the original text file that could be causing this?

Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to use Time Machine read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support.

Remove the following garbage from your Mac.
    "MacKeeper"
    "Sophos"
    "Symantec / Norton"
    "Trusteer Rapport"
Your Mac cannot operate properly with those products installed.
One or more of the following support documents may be applicable:
Uninstall Norton Internet Security for Mac

Verify their complete and permanent eradication from your Mac. Don't use any other techniques to get rid of them.
"Carbonate" is known to run poorly on Macs.
    "App4Mac" is outdated and obsolete.
    Other problems may be present.
You need to become much more circumspect regarding the software you choose to install. I apologize if that comes across as blunt, but you appear to have been exerting quite some effort in an attempt to prevent your Mac from working the way it's supposed to work.

It would be easier to just fix whatever is making your machine slow.

This is usually indicative of a defective print cartridge.  Suspect the black is low in ink or defective.  Please check all cartridges.
