Mac suddenly very slow and other problems

Since a few days ago I've been experiencing the following problems:
+ VERY long startup time (more than four minutes vs. about a minute previously).
+ When starting an application, the system frequently hangs for a few seconds. (While it's hanging, sometimes the process is marked "doesn't react" in Activity Monitor).
+ Everything feels much slower and less responsive than it used to be and I'm frequently getting the spinning pinwheel.
+ Parallels doesn't start any more. After double-clicking the Parallels desktop icon, the icon jumps up and down in the dock for a little while and then just disappears.
The problem may or may not be related to the removal of my Bootcamp partition, which I did shortly before the problems started to occur. I don't remember if the problems started immediately after the removal of the Bootcamp partition but I think it's likely that there is a connection.
I did lots of things to find the cause and solve the problem, to no avail:
+ Made sure that after the Bootcamp removal the Mac HD is selected as the start volume.
+ Checked the HD using Disc Utility (no errors found)
+ Repaired permissions using Disc Utility
+ Created a new user account (problem persisted)
+ Cleared system caches
+ Ran various checks using Onyx (no problems found)
+ Deleted PRAM by starting up and pressing ALT-CMD-R-P
+ Checked for viruses (no viruses found)
+ Unplugged all USB devices
+ Reinstalled OS X ("archive and install")
None of this helped.
Observations:
+ I tried to start in safe mode but that made the startup procedure even slower, I was seeing the Apple logo and the grey spinning wheel for almost 10 minutes alone.
+ According to Activity Monitor there's always lots of free memory and CPU power.
I'm really clueless as to what else I could do other than wiping the HD and reinstalling everything from scratch or sending the machine back to Apple. Any ideas would be *very much appreciated*!

Hard to believe, the problem is back!
Everything worked just fine last night. This morning I turn the iMac on and the problems are back: Extremely long time to startup, application hangs, everything super slow.

  • MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008) suddenly very slow and laggy

    This seems to be a popular question so I apologize, but I know there can be a number of issues that cause a computer to run slow, so I want to post my computer's specifics and hopefully someone can diagnose the issue for me without my having to bring it into the store. Thank you in advance.
    Specifically my MacBook runs slow when trying to open or close Microsoft Word, iTunes, or access a folder with pictures and short videos in it. Frequently I get they are not responding, or have to close out of everything else in order to get the spinning wheel to go away and sometimes that doesn't even help.
    I would just like the computer to be able perform simple commands in a timely manner like it used to. If there is any way I can get back to this I would be eterrrrnally grateful!

    Resetting SMC could solve the problem.
    Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    And you need to install more RAM, I think.

    after loading mountain lion and a few issues before this my mac pro has become very very slow, starting up and shutting down takes forever and some of the pages I load takes forever to load too, any ideas please could really do with help, I even brought apple extream to boost my brand new router many thanks x

    It reads as if you're actually having two problems:
    Long delay in starting up and shutting down, and;
    long delay in loading web pages.
    As to the first - here's a good article to peruse - Why is my computer slow, by ds store (not his real name, I'm assuming). As to the second, you may have a problem with your DNS Servers. If you go to System Preferences>Network>Advanced>DNS, what DNS Servers are listed?

  • Imac suddenly restart itself and other problems

    i dunno how to describe my imac,this problem giving so much trouble.
    there are two error come out from my imac.
    1.in windows boot camp, using normally,but suddenly restart the computer itself.
    2.in mac os x,same as using normally,suddenly the computer disconnect both wireless keyboard and magic mouse, then it remaining at the screen like can't move at all.Immediately, its come out three beeps sound,that are so loud. I have no idea how to close it, so i have to force to shut down the computer by pressing the power button 5 seconds.

  • Ios 5.0.1 crashing, slow and other problems

    I am using an iPhone 4 running 5.0.1 and Im just fed up with it, as much as I loved the iPhone in the past Im afraid I have fallen out of love and I'm conteplating a breakup.
    Problems I have had with the version 5.*.* update:
    * Safari and the built in youtube app crash at least twice daily and other apps, most notably accuweather and Facebook also crash on a daily basis
    * Pages/windows don't load properly, an example of this is the texting app, I open the app and select a converstation, the "messages" button, name and "edit" buttons apear at the top but the area that would disply the text conversation never changes to show the accutual text messages and only pressing the home button and reentering the messages app will fix this.
    * I have had text messages compleatly disapear if I recive one while acitivly using the phone, mostly by pressing the home button or preforming other input at the same exact time I recive a text message. I get the popup notification dispalying the text of the message in the notifaction but when I go to reply to the message It is gone, like it never existed.
    * Simply navagating the phone such as menus, back buttons, or loading apps is slow. I can out type the keyboard and in general the phone is becoming more and more usless. As an example, wakeing the phone with the home button takes upto a full two seconds for the unlock screen to open, then another full second for the phone to "think" before it unlocks. This is increadibly slow compaired to the previous versions, and much slower than my old iPhone 1 and my non-updated iPhone 3Gs
    * I use to have a problem where the purple arrow indicated the phone was using location services about 50% of the time and it was the setting time zone feature. I disabled location services for this feature and it fixed the problem. I did not notice an abnormal battery drain with this problem.
    * The keyboard will not hide and/or display at approprate times requireing me to restart the app.
    * Notication sounds, mostly incoming SMS sounds dont play at approprate times or play twice a few seconds apart for the same incoming message
    * Autocorrect is too easily learning misspelled words leading me to reset the keyboard dictionary too frequently
    * Incoming email and SMS messages cause the phone to loudly vibrate while talking on the phone, this is a new problem with ios5. I use to be proud of the iphone for not doing this becasue I talk to people with androids and found the vibration noise very annoying while on the receving end.
    My phone is rather clean and I have very few third party apps installed. I use the facebook app, a weather app, and only a few other apps. My storage memory is about half full and thats almost entirly music.
    I regualry power cycle and restart my phone, I would say at least once a day. 
    I have tried to fix the phone by disableing and enableing anything I can find from notifications, location services and icloud and nothing has helped.
    I have also tried rebilding the phone, both from a backup, and restored as new. I have taken the phone to an apple store and had them restore it as well, they claim to be able to restore "deeper" than what I can do at home, I assume this is similar to flashing the firmware and not just the software. Doing any kind of restore does seem to help with the speed problem for about 2 days as it slowly gets worse and returns to its ever slow and defective operation.
    I have not noticed any problems with my ipad v1 running ios 5.0.1
    Two of my freinds complain about a similar experience with ios 5 on the iphone
    Does anyone have similar problems or an idea for a fix?

    Here's and update on my problems and here are are some screen shots of the types of problems I've been having since the v5.0.1 update. Keep in mind these are native apps and I have tried the rebuild phone crap many times, nothing helps.
    This is screen shot of a what happened when I tried to use my camera one day, both the front and back cameras were all black. I had to power cycle the phone to get rid of this problem. The cameras appeared to be working correctly, I could focus and zoom but it was all black.
    Here is an image of what happened when I searched for something in a map. This is after I picked the choice I wanted, the keyboard disappeared but the list didn't. I had to force close the app and restart it for this problem to go away. Who knew five bars on ATT was possible.
    And finally this is the messaging app, although you would not know it. I had to return to home screen (after a long pause for it to process the button push) and return to the messaging app. This happens all the time with the messaging app and the notifications sounds drive me crazy. If  i'm using the phone, say browsing the web and I get an incoming message its almost 100% of the time the messaging app will screw up. The sound will play at the wrong time or not at all, message will show up in notifications and diasapear in message app or Ill have a problem like this:

    All of a sudden my mac started running very slow.
    first i opened activity-monitor to see what was wrong. I didnt see any unusual ram-usage. But the kernel_task had a CPU-time of 32 000. I cant seem to find any other explenation for why this is happening.
    when i try to use my computer pretty much every task takes ages. Everything from doing stuff on the internet to browsing around in finder. Im also having trouble starting up my computer, i have to hold in the power button very long for it to respond. It also turns itself of without any reason. 
    Whats weird though is that my computer still manages to run movies in VLC smoothly.

  • ITunes Running Very Slow and other errors

    iMac, OSX 10.6.7, 2.66 GHZ, Intel Core 2Duo, 4GB Ram 1067 MHZ DDR3
    iTunes 10.2.2
    Media is on 1TB USB attached WD Drive / Mac OS Extended.  Music Folder is 83GB
    When I launch iTunes it tries to update Genius and gets the following error:
    "We could not complete your iTunes store request. An unknown error occured (4002).  There was an error in the iTunes store.  Please try again later."
    While viewing my music list in the iTunes browser if I select a star rating for a song, the spinning beach ball may spin for as long as a minute or longer.
    If I launch iTunes and do nothing but play music, it "seems" to do ok.  If I do something like change a rating that then invokes the spinning ball, from
    there on out everything is slow.  A change in songs can take a minute or more.
    I was just able to download / purchase an album from iTunes store.  It was slow and the spinning ball was active for the entire download.  I was able to
    use other applications but could not click anything in iTunes.
    After the download I am able to switch between any and all songs in my library without any noticible lag.
    I updated the rating on one of the new songs just purchased and it took a full 3 minutes for the spinning ball to stop.
    Any help is appreciated.

    What could be bogging down iTunes on my Mac. Internet service seems unaffected but iTunes is slow and many broken links showing pics (album covers, etc.). Other programs seem fine. Auto updates are on and running iTunes 8.

    Let’s try this:
    Restart your mac
    Safe Boot: Hold down the shift key after the chime until the Apple logo appears and the gear is moving.
    It will take awhile but you will be asked to login.
    Go to your Applications folder> Utilities and launch Disk Utility.
    In the left side column, highlight your drive and repair permissions.( button down below)
    Empty the trash.
    Restart your mac.

  • Mac suddenly running slow and freezing frequently after software update

    Hi, first post. I have recently wiped my hard drive after my new macbook pro started crashing frequently and suddenly running slow, however, it all seemed fine for a few days until I ran the software update, and after failing because it was unable to "expand", everything started running slowly and freezing left right and center.
    This is really grinding my gears, and I have been looking for solutions online for ages now, can anyone here help?

  • Powerbook suddenly very slow and Indexing

    Yesterday my G4 1.67Ghz Powerbook 2GB RAM suddenly slowed down and got the beachball thingy.
    I shut down
    This morning i restarted and it is extreemly slow (like 4 or 5 mins to boot) and really slow in OS X. I noticed Spotlight is indexing but it seems stuck on estimating indexing time.
    After another couple of restarts the PB started turning itself off whilst on the grey screen with the apple logo at boot.
    Now its booting again but slowly and OS X is slow again and its indexing.
    I tried the following:
    Reset NVRAM and PRAM
    Reset PMU
    Disk repair from install CD but it stopped and said cannot repair disk. Thats when the mac was able to boot again but as i said above very slowly.
    Trying boot cd's is a bit of a pain since the superdrive works 20% of the time.
    Any ideas what could be wrong or what else i can try ?

    What you're describing sounds like a hard drive going bad, and the fact that Disk Utility reports it can't repair the disk would confirm this. You have a couple of options. Depending on what the error is that Disk Utility can't repair, a program like Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro may be able to repair it.  However, some errors can't be repaired, and a new hard drive may be in order (and is probably cheaper than Disk Warrior). You could try doing a security erase writing zero's to the disk, then restore your data, however, if the issue is a hard drive hardware issue, that won't fix it.
    You can also download SMART Utility from http://www.volitans-software.com/smart_utility.php to see what the SMART sensors say about the health of your disk.

    what if any is showing for pageouts?

    how much physicalRAM and what of repair the drive? safe boot? tried clone system, or try a clean install and start from there, it can be the best way to resolve or at lea,asr test, and for performing system repairs & maintenance

  • Suddenly VERY slow and slow to charge

    I have a powerbook G4 I bought just 3 years ago this past December. I mostly just use Safari, and Microsoft Office on it--nothing fancy. The kids hook up their ipods to it for iTunes.
    I am running 10.4.11, it has a 1.67 GHz G4 processor, 1GB DDR2 SDRAM, and out of 100GB of space, I have about 27 left.
    It's worked just fine until yesterday and I don't recall downloading or doing anything spectacularly different than usual. I went to go open a .pdf file and print it, and Preview would just shut down. Acrobat wouldn't even open--just bounce. Now everything is delayed, I can't print, I'm constantly getting the little spinning rainbow circle, and it's taking FORVER to charge.
    I know Adobe had a virus issue with .pdf's but their website says it doesn't affect Macs.
    Any ideas on what's wrong and what I can do? It's driving me insane!

    The only remedy for your situation is replacing the HDD. As eww noted, if you do not have a current backup you should take steps immediately to secure your data. Stop using your computer until you are able to securte your data. If you have questions about how to do this, please post back.
    Review these step by step directions for iFixit for replacing the HDD. If, after reviewing the directins, you think you would like to attempt the task yourself, please post back for a list of available HDDs for your computer, as well as additional tips.

  • G580 Very slow, and mouse problems, please help

    I purchased a brand new G580 approx 2 weeks ago. 
    It has 4GB of memory compared to my old lenovo which had 2GB.  This new one runs at half the speed of my old one and has nothing on it (i.e pictures, music, vids etc) 
    If i open a programme to do something and then open another, it cannot cope with it and will take forever to do anything on the 2nd programme when it eventually opens. 
    also the mouse wanders! I dont have to be touching it or doing anything near it, it just wanders across the screen which is getting very annoying. 
    Please could somebody help me?

    I’m sorry to hear that your G580 Laptop is not performing as expected and the cursor is moving erratic, re-installing the Touchpad driver should resolve this issue and let me know the OS (Operating System) that is installed in the computer and the country where the computer was purchased, also the Type of G580 for providing the steps to resolve performance issue and exact touchpad driver link. Below is the link to locate the model number and Type of the computer which is mentioned on the sticker at the base of the Laptop.
