Mac suddenly very slow
All of a sudden my mac started running very slow.
first i opened activity-monitor to see what was wrong. I didnt see any unusual ram-usage. But the kernel_task had a CPU-time of 32 000. I cant seem to find any other explenation for why this is happening.
when i try to use my computer pretty much every task takes ages. Everything from doing stuff on the internet to browsing around in finder. Im also having trouble starting up my computer, i have to hold in the power button very long for it to respond. It also turns itself of without any reason.
Whats weird though is that my computer still manages to run movies in VLC smoothly.
Help would realy be appriciated

Mac suddenly very slow and other problems
Since a few days ago I've been experiencing the following problems:
+ VERY long startup time (more than four minutes vs. about a minute previously).
+ When starting an application, the system frequently hangs for a few seconds. (While it's hanging, sometimes the process is marked "doesn't react" in Activity Monitor).
+ Everything feels much slower and less responsive than it used to be and I'm frequently getting the spinning pinwheel.
+ Parallels doesn't start any more. After double-clicking the Parallels desktop icon, the icon jumps up and down in the dock for a little while and then just disappears.
The problem may or may not be related to the removal of my Bootcamp partition, which I did shortly before the problems started to occur. I don't remember if the problems started immediately after the removal of the Bootcamp partition but I think it's likely that there is a connection.
I did lots of things to find the cause and solve the problem, to no avail:
+ Made sure that after the Bootcamp removal the Mac HD is selected as the start volume.
+ Checked the HD using Disc Utility (no errors found)
+ Repaired permissions using Disc Utility
+ Created a new user account (problem persisted)
+ Cleared system caches
+ Ran various checks using Onyx (no problems found)
+ Deleted PRAM by starting up and pressing ALT-CMD-R-P
+ Checked for viruses (no viruses found)
+ Unplugged all USB devices
+ Reinstalled OS X ("archive and install")
None of this helped.
Observations:
+ I tried to start in safe mode but that made the startup procedure even slower, I was seeing the Apple logo and the grey spinning wheel for almost 10 minutes alone.
+ According to Activity Monitor there's always lots of free memory and CPU power.
I'm really clueless as to what else I could do other than wiping the HD and reinstalling everything from scratch or sending the machine back to Apple. Any ideas would be *very much appreciated*!Hard to believe, the problem is back!
Everything worked just fine last night. This morning I turn the iMac on and the problems are back: Extremely long time to startup, application hangs, everything super slow.
Any ideas?
I restarted in verbose mode and took some pictures, in case that helps...

Mac Book Pro suddenly very slow
MacBook Pro suddenly very slow despite good wifi connection. Should I be scanning for virus? and if so, which product?
Scanning for a virus will be a waste of time. To date there are no know virus' affecting Macs.

My Mac Book Pro is suddenly very slow. Suggestions?
Hi p,
Try any of the following which you have not yet done:
Make sure you have at least 15% free space available on your HD.
Check SMART status on HD.
Repair Permissions.
Repair Disk.
SMC Reset.
Safe Boot.
Check Page outs in Activity Monitor. -
Today, WebDav became suddenly very slow on my iMac running the latest version of Mavericks. Yesterday everything was OK.
When I try WebDav from my iPad things are OK, so I suspect something is wrong on my iMac. I already tried rebooting and resetting PRAM and VRAM.
Does anyone have a good suggestion?Hello,
Check to see how much free disk space there is. Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop, then click: Get Info. In the Get Info window, click the discovery triangle so it's facing down. You will see; Capacity and Available Make sure you have 10% available disk space, 15% is better. Insufficient available space, can cause performance issues, system corruption, and possible loss of data.
Check the hard disk for errors.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.

After upgrading to mountain lion my mac is very slow?
Hello
After upgrading to mountain lion my mac is very slow
It was starting in 10 seconds and shuting dow in 5 seconds and now it's taking more than one minute to start it or shut down it and everything is slow
why????????/
ThanksFirst, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
Take these steps when you notice the problem.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting. -
Graphic card problem maybe? Since when I have changed the hard drive to my macbook pro and I installed all the new softwares, my mac is very slow and the screen gives crazy pictures, could maybe be the graphic card, does anybody have experienced this?
after a restart it works for a time, but always slow. I went to the Applestore this afternoon and the made a check and said it would be the logicboard and they would have to change it for CHF 600 and it would be ready in 10 - 15 days

Mac works very slow. Sometimes my mous refuse to work. Its seems like mac download enything. Any Ideas?
On the bottom of your MBP there is the serial number. Enter it here and post back the results:
https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
Here is a trouble shooting guide. The usual reasons for slow performance are the HDD or third party applications. Boot into the recovery partition and run Disk Utility>First Aid.
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3521
Down load Etrecheck and post the results:
http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
This may show some inherent problems that may be resident on your MBP.

Since dowloading Mavericks last week my Mac is very slow. Anyone else having this problem? any suggestions as to what to do to speed things up?
It will help people help you better if you post your iMac variant and Mac OSX version. Please do "About this Mac" from your Apple menu and, in the resulting window, click the "More Info" button. That will give this window:
The model is in the line I've indicated with the red arrow. Please also post the results for "Memory" and "Processor."
DO NOT post the serial number, however. -
Internet suddenly very slow 2011 Mac Mini
My internet has suddenly become very very slow.
Wireless.
Last week very fast.
Any ideas?Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. -
I'm not sure if this is the best thread, so my apologies if there's a better one.
Suddenly, my Mac is very sluggish. Main symptom: I'll click on a folder and nothing happens. After two or three clicks, it finally opens. Or perhaps I'll click on the red button and again nothing happens until I click a few more times.
Logic 8 is crashing badly, but the Mac is slow even when Logic is not open.
Do these symptoms sound familiar to anyone? Thanks in advance for any help.Download, install and run Applejack. Applejack runs in single user mode. Restart your mac and after the chime hold down the command (apple) and s keys. At the prompt enter applejack auto restart and let it do it’s thing. Suddenly my MacBook Pro is very slow. Spinning beach ball of death appears across platforms. Might have a virus or malware. What can I run to detect what's up? Any suggestions?
You may be able to improve the speed with some software work but it could also be your disk or SSD is corrupt or failing.
Backup your data immediately:
Before proceeding you should make sure you have a current backup. If it has been getting slower over time your disk could be a failing slowly. SATA drives have two retry modes: short and long. They can continue operating as read errors are increasing. The long retry cycle is very long and can cause significant performance degradation. If it has started long retries then it is likely to get worse and eventually fail. SSDs also have a failure mode where the fail slowly.

Try resetting PRAM and SMC:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Is it faster now? If not, proceed.
Restart in Safe Mode:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564?viewlocale=en_US
Reboot in normal node. (This boot may be slower than normal.)
Is it faster now? If not, proceed.
Restart in Safe Mode again:
Uninstall all unnecessary login items:
> User&Groups > Login items. > Unlock the padlock. > Remove them with the minus -
Also uninstall internet plug-ins in your browsers.
Reboot in normal node. (This boot may be slower than normal.)
Is it faster now? If not, proceed.
Spotlight: If Spotlight is continually running, re-index Spotlight:

Low disk space:
If your disk has less than 10% free space or less than 15 GB free it can slow down your Mac. For information on how to clear disk space see https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5634300?tstart=30 .

- Corrupted Caches
Using Onyx to clear the caches.
- Step by Step to Fix your Mac:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3353
(I learned a lot reading this document. Good stuff.)
- A clean install.
After you have backed up your system twice to two different disk drives.
Preferably with one of the backups being a clone.
Time Machine restores are complex and can sometimes fail.
You don’t want to risk all your data on one backup as you wipe out the data on your Mac.
As part of this clean install procedure for disks, erase the disk with Security Option Zero
that writes zeros to all sectors and remaps bad sectors as it does so.
That is a time consuming operation, but worth it.
See https://discussions.apple.com/message/24057867#24057867
If you have an SSD, to not write a pass of zeros to it.

Hardware replacement or upgrade?
Hopefully by now your Mac is back to its normal speed. If a hardware repair is indicated take it to an Genius bar at an Apple store for a free diagnosis and estimate of repairs. If it is under warranty or AppleCare they will repair it for free. If not, you can compare their estimate with DIY repairs.
Genius reservation http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ .
or find an Apple Authorized Service Provider https://locate.apple.com/country
You can speed it up further by upgrading some hardware. (Do not upgrade the hardware if it is still covered by the warranty or AppleCare.) For the following memory, disk or SSD replacements and upgrades check out OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/, Crucial: http://www.crucial.com/ and Kingston http://www.kingston.com/us/. You will need to know your Mac the year and season your Mac was first sold and model number which can be found here:
> About This Mac > More Info… > System Report > Model Identifier:
If your Mac has 2 or 4 GB of RAM, consider an upgrade to 8 GB (if the memory is upgradeable). An 8 GB memory upgrade is only $100. When I upgraded a MacBook from 2 GB o 8 GB it booted thee times faster.
If your Mac has a disk and it won’t repair properly, is low on disk space, or you just want a considerably faster disk, check out an upgrade to an SSD-Hybrid disk. Google "Seagate 1TB Solid State Hybrid Drive SATA 6Gbps 64MB Cache 2.5-Inch" or consider an SSD (120 to 480 GB).
OWC has SSD replacements and upgrades for MacBook Airs and Retina MacBook Pros.
Good luck. May the software fixes do the trick. -
