.Mac Sync / iSync

I'm apparently having trouble with either or both of .Mac Sync and iSync. I've got iSync v2.4 running under OS X 10.4.9. When I open iSync, there's the .mac icon, and when I click on it I get the message about no longer using iSync to synchronise information across computers etc. That's fine. However, I am using iSync to sync information from my phone. The problem is this: the iSync icon in the menu bar seems to actually be a .Mac sync icon. When I click on it, the drop-down menu has a date with the last .Mac sync, an option for "Sync Now", and an option for "Open .Mac Sync Preferences". This is the case even though I enabled "Show status in menu bar" in iSync, and the icon goes away if I then uncheck the "Show status in menu bar" option in the .Mac preferences. According to the help file, though, I should be able to have an iSync icon in the menu bar with an option to sync my phone, and I should also be able to click on iSync in the Dock and see an option to sync (that's not happening either).
Any thoughts?
Thanks

I'm surprised that you didn't notice this behavior before, as it has been the manner in which the Sync Now icon in the menu bar has operated ever since the release of iSync 2 and Mac OS X 10.4.
Julian Wright wrote a small application to restore such functionality, not to the icon in the menu bar, but to a replacement for the iSync alias in your Dock. More about that issue and his application can be found here:

  • Isync/.mac sync and mail accounts

Mail checks 3 email accounts for me. And .Mac is set to sync my mail accounts and settings across two computers.
The thing is, every time I open Mail (on either computer), .mac will eventually sync, and I get the "this is going to change >5% of your mail accounts" warning. It says it is going to delete two accounts, modify zero, and add two. I always just click ok.
But it's getting to the point it's annoying. So today I clicked the "details" section- and it shows the accounts that are supposed to be added/deleted- and they are identical.
Everything else syncs fine, without error.
is there something funny about mail account syncing? Why does it do this every single bloody time .mac runs a sync?!
    Thanks!

You should ask in the .Mac Sync forum. iSync doesn't do any kind of Mail syncing - it's for syncing to phones and PDAs.

  • .mac sync also opens iSync

Is there a way to turn this off? Whenever I sync .mac it opens iSync and looks for my phone, if my phone is connected it syncs it and when it's done, most of the time my phone wont mount till I restart the computer. So I'd like to prevent my .mac sync from opening iSync.
    Thanks!

  • Why does iSync now open when I activate .Mac sync?

I use iSync on my PowerBook G4 to sync Calendars with my cellphone, and since I installed Leopard last week, whenever I activate .Mac sync to sync my computers, iSync automatically opens and attempts to sync my phone while .Mac is syncing. And I get a "synchronization failed, restart phone" message from iSync even when my cell is on & available to sync. iSync and .Mac sync were formerly 2 separate processes and I would like to keep it that way, but I find nothing in iSync preferences that looks like a way to solve the problem. When I open iSync independently, it syncs the phone just fine, and the .Mac sync is working fine too.

    Hi there,
It seems you have something in the back that's playing music. Did you try closing plugin containter in Task Manager?
This could be also if you have pinned a website in the Application tab that has background music. (like a gaming site)
If this helped you, please mark my answer as "Solved!".

Nokia has two different programs for mac users.
    1. iSync plugin (to sync contacts and calender)
    2. Nokia Multimedia transfer ( photos/video/music/bookmark)
have you installed isync plugin for your N95 device?
    plugin is available here: http://europe.nokia.com/get-support-and-software/product-support/isync/compatibility-and-download
    Installing the plug-in
Make sure you have installed all available updates from Apple using Software Update. Minimum requirements are Mac OS X 10.4.9 with iSync 2.4 to use the plug-in unless otherwise stated.
Check the list above to see if your phone needs a plug-in. If so, download the plug-in disk image to your desktop.
Make sure iSync is not running.
Double-click the downloaded plug-in disk image. A virtual disk will open in Finder.
Double-click the enclosed plug-in installer package to start the installation.
After the installation is complete, you can eject the virtual disk and move the disk image file to the Trash.
You can now start iSync with the plug-in installed.

  • Duplicated events on iCal after .mac sync

    Thre facts:
    I have a TREO600, a desktop mac, and a powerbook, both running Tiger 10.4.4.
Due to some other problems with syncing the TREO, I have purchased the Missing Sync from MarkSpace, and that works very well to sync the palm with the desktop.
I started syncing my two computers with .mac lately, and I have nothing but trouble. Nearly every sync throws up some conflicts, often about events that have long passed. I went through the long list of conflicts EVERY time this happens, but iSync seems to complain about new conflict nearly everytime I sync.
Moreover, it seems to duplicate certain (but not all) events on my iCal after it has synced with .mac.
This is super annoying. I have seen that there are many different posts on duplication already, but none of them seem to match my problem, though there definetly seems to be a general problem with iSync not being very good at checking for duplicates.
Any ideas how to solve this?
    thanks,
    marc

Because you are running the Missing Sync for Palm OS in a Mac OS X 10.4 or later environment, the synchronization of your data is a separate process controlled by .Mac Sync. In order to correct the issue, you should perform a reset, replacing all of the records on .Mac with the records from iCal and the Address Book, which should, incidently, be contemporaneous with your Treo 600 smartphone.
To do that, launch System Preferences and select the .Mac pane. Press the Advanced tab, then the Reset Sync Data… button in the lower left corner of the dialog box. Reserve the default directional data transfer from .Mac to your machine by pressing the right-facing arrow beneath the .Mac icon. This will shift directional flow so that data moves from your computer to the .Mac servers. You can keep the Replace: All Sync Data value in the drop-down menu above, or choose to synchronize only one data type [Calendars or Contacts] by selecting the appropriate value. If you synchronize them separately, you must repeat this process for the other data type.
This event will transfer a complete set of records from iCal and the Address Book to the appropriate storage locations on the .Mac servers, replacing the non-matching data currently stored there. It will not affect your continued use of the Mark/Space Contacts, Events and Tasks menu, and will not change the data stored on your handheld the next time you synchronize.

  • .mac sync problem:  account information issues

I have 3 machines, all running 10.4.11. 2 of them synced (before the .me migration), one, an ibook G4 has never synced
In Ical preferences, the synchronize calendar box is grayed and there is the following message: Your .mac account information is not correct or you did not turn on synchronization in the .mac Preference Pane
When I go to .mac in system preferences, under the Sync tab, I am unable to check off any of the programs that can be synced. If I try to check off the synchronize with .mac box, the check appears then immediately disappears. Going to advanced, pressing the Register this Computer button. causes nothing to happen.
I have no problems accessing my account or idisc.
I have reset my sync data,
    reset my .mac password
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you,

    Carolyn,
You set me on the right path. com.apple.syncservices.ConflictResolver.plist could not be found. So, I started deleting preference files and rebooting.
    First
    com.apple.DotMacSync.plist
    Then
    com.apple.isync.plist
    Then
    com.apple.dotmaccertificatefix.plist
In all of the above cases I received the following error message when I went to system preferences / .mac / sync tab
"There was a problem with the sync
    .Mac login failed"
    Then
    com.apple.dotmactranslator.plist
at system preferences / .mac / sync tab
Dot mac then told me that there were two of my computers using the same name. This might have been left over from the migration assistant
I changed the name of the computer that was giving me an error instead of syncing and that solved the problem.
    Thank you all.

  • Can't access dot mac sync options in system preferences

    Hi,
I noticed that my iMac (G5 - 10.5) was slowing down horribly. In the Activity Monitor it turned out that the dotmacsyncclient was using up 80-90% CPU. Syncing did work. When I wanted to check to .Mac setting I couldn't get into the Sync page. System Pref just crashed.
So I decided to delete all the sync settings from the Library (SyncServ). After a reboot the system seems to works just fine. The syncclient doesn't use up the cPU anymore so that's good.
But I still cannot access the .Mac sync options. System Prefs keep crashing. So not I cannot reset my sycing preferences!
Anyone has any idea how to solve this?
    Thanks!
    Marco

Well, it's nice to know that I'm not alone in this issue too. This started cropping up after the last major update to Leopard. I cannot reset .Mac sync services either in System Preferences or through the icon in the uppper right hand bar of the screen. Each time gets me a spinning beach ball which hangs the system and causes me to do a Force Quit.
Force Quit always shows it to be a non-responsive program. All other aspects are fine. I've even gone into iSync and reset the preferences there with no apparent change. I have no ideas on this one and have been searching for an answer myself - hopefully someone (or Apple) will have one...crash logs are not giving me anything to point to either...

  • Both macs sync, just not with eachother?

I have three macs. Two sync, but recently one is not syncing with the others. In accounts/advanced the two can not see the lone one and vice versa. (used only for iCal) Any suggestions any one? Thanks.

This is a .Mac Sync issue, not one with iSync. A forum for .Mac Sync users is located here.
.Mac machine to machine synchronization now requires Mac OS X 10.4.10 or later, and synchronization from machines upon which Mac OS X 10.3.x is installed is no longer supported to any platform running Mac OS X 10.4 or later. Mac OS X 10.3 <---> 10.3 synchronization is still supported.

  • .Mac sync problem

I can't sync my computer with my .Mac account. When I go to "System Preferences"->".Mac"->"Sync", the computer just sits there and I won't be able to go into the "Sync" option. I can't access the "Advanced" option in this window neither, however the "iDisk" and "Account" options are accessible.
I don't know if this related with my iSync problem reported also in this forum.
    Thanks in advance.

Replying to myself as the one long discussion about recent .Mac sync problems has been locked!!
Just to say that NOW .Mac on the web says:
".Mac sync services are currently intermittently unavailable to some users. Changes made to synced information will be reflected when the problem is resolved. All other .Mac services are unaffected.
    Last Updated: 6/1/06"
So the MANY people who have been posting problems in the last 24+ h MAY find it resolves and is not their end. But, customer care suggestion to apple:
    - IF you think .Mac syncing has a problem POST the info IMMEDIATELY
    - Possibly even email .Mac members as many use sync all the time without logging on the .Mac web services
The time and stress (cand cost) spent by many trying to fix their own syncing is frustrating. I have spent several hrs over the last 24h unregistering, registering, syncing manually, resetting from different Macs, doing it item by item...finding a glimmer of hope when on one occasion Mail synced and on another so did contacts, only for .Mac login failures to continue...This has clearly been replicated by a large number of other frustrated customers from the other postings on this over the last day.

  • When set to "Automatic", when does .Mac sync?

I have a network of Macs and am syncing iCal. All are running OS 10.4.9. Syncing works properly when I do it manually from the machines. But I need to sync automatically. But, often those Macs that are set to sync using .Mac using the "automatic" option can go for days without actually syncing. Does anyone know what the triggers are for automatic syncing? I would assume that, anytime new data is entered a sync would soon occur. Also I would assume there would be an automatic sync to get new data 'once-in-awhile'. But I don't know what the 'rules' are and when I can actually expect a sync to occur for Macs set to automatic. Anyone know? And why does the sync occasionally not Kick in? Thanks in advance!

Julian's right: the .Mac Sync forum is the place to ask, as iSync no longer has anything to do with synchronization to and through .Mac.
The short answer—and, because of the complexity of the synchronization framework, this is a difficult question to simply and accurately answer—is that Automatically is construed to mean '…whenever changes occur, and in any event, no less than once each hour.' This gets complicated when multiple clients are involved, and when other clients—like .Mac Sync—get 'invited to the party' when you initiate a synchronization event with your mobile handset through iSync.
This document explains more than you probably ever wanted to know, and most of what is publicly available in a single source, about the synchronization framework under Mac OS X 10.4 and later:

  • .Mac Sync Notice

I have to say with a great deal of frustration that in over a year my iSync hasn't worked totally on any of my computers. It's been one issue after another, calenders, contacts, bookmarks etc., etc. I've owned Macs since the original 128 and have never had an issue like this that's been unresolved for this long. I actually just gave up on iSync but I tried it again today and this time I get this
Window>.Mac Sync Error>The sync was either cancelled or timed out.
    and this Window>
.Mac Sync Error>An inconsistency detected on .Mac for your Contacts data prevented your sync from completing! You should consider resetting .Mac from a computer with good data.
Is there a cure for this or should I just shelve iSync and move along?

These issues seem to just get more numerous. I'm about ready to say goodbye to .mac.

  • .Mac Sync Error

I keep two computers synced via .Mac. Until just recently there's been no problem. My PowerBook runs its normal sync routine (and syncs properly with my Palm). When I try then try to sync my iMac it doesn't work, and this error message comes up:
[ISyncConcreteSession pushChange:]: you can't modify a record that doesn't exist: <ISyncChange 0x15c8a50>{ modify record id 'C200015D-D6D5-4DD3-A476-9C088352A955'
    set com.apple.ical.type = local
    set title = Unfiled }
NOTE: the problem seems to only affect the calendar.
I booted up from the system disk and corrected the permissions. I also ran the repair function, which reported that there was nothing needing repair.
Beyond that I haven't a clue. Thanks in advance for any help.
    iMac G4 + PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

This is actually a .Mac Sync issue, for which a forum exists here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=957
It is triggered though, by an issue involving iSync and your Palm device. iSync creates a default Unfiled calendar, into which all Palm-created events are transferred each time you synchronize. This particular iSync feature has behaved inconsistently since the evolution of iSync 1.5 to iSync 2, and subsequent releases have not corrected the strange behavior it sometimes exhibits. Your issue is an extension of those behavioral problems.
Assuming that the error message appears on your iMac, which is synchronized with .Mac Sync but to which you do not synchronize your Palm device, then you need to reset your synchronization data by opening the System Preferences application on your Powerbook and execute these steps:
    • press the .Mac icon
    • press the Advanced tab
    • wait for your registered computer list to be updated, then press the Reset Sync Data… button
    • from the Replace: drop-down menu, choose Calendars
    • click on the right-facing arrow, so that the orange animated arrow moves from left to right
    • be sure that the phrase above it says, "On .Mac with sync info from this computer."
    • press the Replace button
Once that process has been completed, go to the iMac and execute the same process, except in the opposite direction: you want to press the left-facing arrow so that the orange animated icon runs from right to left, and the phrase above it says, "On this computer with sync info from .Mac."
That should force the creation of the now non-existent Unfiled calendar on the iMac, and allow synchronization to occur properly.

  • How do you reset .Mac sync files?

i have a couple home computers and my work computer all set up to use Sync. I just got a new computer at work so I decided to clean off the old one before turning it over to IT. in the process (obviously without thinking) i deleted bookmarks, address book entries etc. evidently, it immediately synced up with .Mac and now my other computers thing they need to "update" by deleting everything. is there an easy way to "force" the data from one of my home computers back up to .Mac?

You can update calendars and contacts [as well as the other .Mac Sync data types] from any computer [or other device with access to the data, such as a Palm handheld] in your synchronization pool, but you cannot update iCal calendars from the web—where they appear as read-only pages—or from .Mac, where they are not accessible.
You can update bookmarks and contacts from the .Mac website, but not other data types, including calendars.
You can do this if your are synchronizing using either .Mac Sync or MySync, but not iSync, which does not synchronize these data types between machines under Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

  • .mac sync quit working

I have 3 computers all on leopard that have been syncing fine for quite some time. Now, one of them will not sync and when I go to the .mac preferences it shows no computers in the list and will sit for hours saying it is registering the computer. If I create a new user and switch to that user and go to the preferences, everything works just fine and the other two computers still work fine. I have tried removing every preference I can think of to no avail. Also tried some ideas on this board but still does not work. The fact that a new user account will work fine indicates there must be something corrupted somewhere that I should be able to fix. Any ideas?
