.mac & system updates crashes

.mac & system updates crash when I try to run them. I think it has something to do with isync, but not sure. I repaired the permissions, zapped the P-ram. What else can I do?

Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.
An Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc...

  • Mac system updates wipe all my saved passwords and other data

Every time my macbook performs a system update (which all you mac users know is weekly or bi-weekly) all of my passwords are wiped, as well as any address, phone number, and other data for filling in fields.
Is this supposed to happen? Is there a way to avoid it?
I only just started using Firefox a month ago when the Flock programmers turned stooges, so if I can't avoid this it's not too late for me to switch to a different browser.

You should get your data back when you leave Private Browsing mode, i.e. remove the checkmark and restart Firefox.
Firefox stores the open tabs in the sessionstore.js file, so make sure that Session Restore is working properly.
You can reset <b>browser.sessionstore.*</b> prefs that are user set (bold) to the default value via the right-click context menu on the <b>about:config</b> page to make sure that Session Restore is enabled and working properly.

  • So...apparently my Mac system totally crashed..Help

So there was a power outage this morning, and my MAC OS totally crashed and my computer is basically dead now. At restart it does a flashing file thing which is indicating it can't find the system (I read the directions/manual).
I tried restarting it and pressing the option key down..etc. and holding down the power button. It made a loud beep sound and tried to restart but it just freezes with an arrow/pointer on the screen and does nothing else.
I am getting my Mac fixed on Wed. to replace the optical drive as is, so I guess they'll have to fix the system as well.
I can not find my Mac discs and it would not work anyway because the optical drive is dead.
Any suggestions of what I can do? I hope I don't lose any data over this.
    thanks.

    1. You may be able to try to boot in target disk mode with another Mac and get the files you need. If the hard drive is damaged it won't happen.
    2. Wait till Wed. and let's see if whomever can boot your Mac up and check the condition of the hard drive.
    3. Get a replacement set of OS disks. Don't lose these. You'll need them to repair your hard drive if necessary.

That would be fine except System Update is NOT running so whatever glitch I had before has morphed into this latest glitch and my question is, can someone please advise me HOW TO RE-INSTALL SYSTEM UPDATE?
    Thanks,
    Bob

check out for any reigistry entires where system update is still present...it requires .net framework 2.0 to run i guess if its not opening do one thing install it and use the automated recovery solutions where you can find a direct link for running system updates
fcourse you must be having system update installed on your computer first!

  • MAC Mini 10.4.8 update crashed my system

Yesterday a message popped up on my screen, said I should update to 10.4.8. I did and after rebooting the system locked up in trying to find the mouse/keyboard. I then called Mac support and was told that I would have to buy support contract before they could help.
I don't figure how they can **** up my system and then want me to pay for it. I was almost an apple convert. But now I think Linux is the only way to go. MAC ***** and I will inform anyone I know not to buy one.
The MAC mini does not even have a cd eject button, if the OS does not start you can't get the cd out. Can I load Linux on the system.. Will have to check on that.
    Later,
    William

    William,
As someone who has updated a rather large number of Macs to 10.4.8, I can tell you without any doubt at all that there is nothing wrong with the update. What tends to happen in these situations is that updating a system brings to light issues that pre-existed and which should have been fixed before updating took place. There are instances, for example, where as a result of utilities used or add-ons installed, the software update process may mis-identify the particular model of Mac you are using or the components it contains, and download the wrong, or incomplete, update. The easy fix is to download the full 10.4.8 'Combo' update from the apple/support/downlaods page and install that. This resolves most updating issues because the combo update contains all the components and recourses for all systems.
By the way, what you read here is primarily going to be complaints about faulty systems or software, so while it's informative to look at what other people are posting, it isn't indicative of anything much other than that some users are having some problems. It's a bit like a hospital waiting room, where the people are typically going to be sick other wise they wouldn't be there - but you can't, of course, infer from their presence that the entire city is sick!
MacOS 10.4.8 doesn't slow systems down at all. Bad cache files, poorly maintained systems, conflicting fonts, out of date prebinding, erroneous permissions, damaged properly lists, etc etc, are all capable of causing system performance issues and all need to be examined and resolved. As a Linux user, no doubt you are familiar with these concepts.
As to Apple support - your perception may vary, but they still score consistently high on the consumer satisfaction surveys of such people as JD Power and PC Magazine. There is always room for improvement of course and Apple is far from perfect, but one thing that we do see happening a lot is that as new users join the throng of Mac owners, they tend to bring their expectations of need to run maintenance and utility software with them from other platforms. What is often needed in Windows, for example, to keep a system running well is rarely needed in MacOS - and can actually create issues rather than resolve them.
    Oh, and:
I have done nothing to my system.
Setup 7/24/2006, used it for web, creating doc's and email.
Got no help from Apple because it's been 90 days.
10/28/2006 or 10/29/2006 looks like they timed
the update to cause systems to crash so they
could charge for support in fixing it.
Is just plain childish. Firstly, that supposes everyone bought their systems at the same time as you did, which I'd imagine you can see is a bit unlikely. Secondly, it flies in the face of the majority of users who report no issues. Thirdly, Apple wouldn't survive long if they had that sort of business practice. Fourthly, it abdicates all responsibility you have for your own system.

  • My mac-mini keeps crashing when I and watch a movie in itunes. Just auto-updated software, could that be the problem?

My mac mini keeps crashing. I recently updated the software, following apple prompts. Every time I open a movie in itunes, it goes for 5 mins then stops. The mac fan gets really loud and the whole computer crashes. I have to restart, then the same problem occurs! HELP!!!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Select "system.log" from the file list. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged during the time something abnormal was happening. That time might be before or after the boot.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. If the problem is a system crash or freeze, post the messages from before the boot time, when the system was about to crash or was failing to shut down. In either case, please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning or the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
If the log doesn't go back far enough in time, scroll down in the Console file list to /private/var/log/system.log.0.bz2. Search that archived log, and if necessary the older ones below it, for the same information.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
    Do the same with kernel.log.
    Step 3
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • System Prefs crashes on using the Update "Check Now"

    Hi,
My System Preferences crashes the moment I ask the Software Update to "Check Now."
Could this be a capacity issue. I have only 1.6 GB left on my hard disk. I'm also having issues with
printing crashes from all Mac applications, but then not InDesign. This might be related, but how can I go about discovering what the problem might be? Does anyone have a few tips please. I've run Mac's First Aid from the installer disk and there were no problems.
    Chris.

I have only 1.6 GB left on my hard disk
Incredible that your Mac runs at all. You need at least 10GB, or 10% of your hard disk if that is greater, to run smoothly.
Leaving this any longer can result in data loss and a seriously messed up system, so clear out some debris now!

  • The 10.5.3 update crashes .mac

    Hi All,
I'm curious to know if anyone has experienced this problem and if they have found a solution. It's occurring on my Macbook Pro that I've had for barely six months and just updated to 10.5.3; Since installing the update, clicking on the .mac preference pane crashes the preferences app. Some random glitches have also appeared in other applications, e.g. navigating to the Apple UK store causes Safari to crash (nice one, guess I won't be buying any more stuff from Apple!). This only happens when I am connected to the internet via the airport.
Not being able to change my .mac preferences is bad enough but the really significant problem is the effect on two other processes, filesyncagent and dotmacsyncclient. They each start up automatically and proceed to run constantly at around 90% CPU each. Based on the their names and some digging around I know there are to do with the synchronisation of my iDisk and other .mac stuff and therefore related to the same issue. The result is that my battery runs down within an hour unless I kill the processes.
This is a really serious problem for me (and I assume many others). I would appreciate any help anyone out there has to offer.
    Many thanks.

Are you by any chance using a proxy server that works through a .pac file? If so, go to System Preferences>Network>Advanced...>Proxies and disable it, just to see if that helps. I think OS 10.5.3 introduced a javascript incompatibility with proxy .pac servers.

  • After recent system updates iPod Crashes G5

I could not us iPod Updater on that mac since it crashed it every time I would plug into dock. I plugged into my G3 laptop and was able to do reset to factory default, so now when I plug into G5, even though system profiler sees it, it does not go to the do no disconnect mode and nothing sees it. No desktop icon and it does not show up in itunes.

UPDATE /. Last night after getting it to be "seen" by the update program plugging into USB, it still won't connect to itunes or the desktop, and now will not shut off when taken out of the dock/.

I recently did a system update and installed Yosemite on my Mac. Now I am unable to open CS5 at all. The error message I get is this: "To open Adobe Photoshop CS5.1, you need to install legacy Java SE 6 runtime." I have tried downloading this and it still gives me the same mess

In the details it is mentioned that it is an outdated version of Java.
Is this a security risk that i need to live with to get CS5 to run with Yosemite?
Also i need to reject messages from Java in the future about updates, or not?
    thx for any input

    Hello,
Is the ThinkPad still on Windows XP RTM level?  If so, try installing Service Pack 3 for Microsoft Windows XP and then re-running the ThinkVantage System Update Utility.  There might be some dependencies in those faulting modules which require functionality in the XP SP3 level Windows kernel.

    What are you missing?
I inherited this app and signing the third party jars is how it was setup, I was wondering the same thing too, why was it necessary to sign the third party jars?
The applet runs in either JRE 1.6.0_13 or JRE 1.6.0_27 depending on the other Java apps the user uses. JRE 1.6.0_13 does not have the mixed code security (so it is like is disable), but JRE 1.6.0_27 does have the mixed code security and the applet will not launch with mixed code security enable, so we have to disable it. With all the hacking going on in the last two years, is important to improve security; so this is a must.
Yes, I always clear up the cache.
Any idea on how to resolve this problem?

Your Mac is 3 versions of OS X out of date, current release is 10.9.1, minimum required for Lion is 10.7.4, you have 10.6.8.
Download 10.9.1 (Mavericks) from the App Store
