Mac takes almost 10 minutes to start up since update two weeks ago

Hello all! I've had my mac for almost three years now and it has been problem free until the beginning of this year.
First in February the hard drive failed for no reason which of course I had to pay to replace. Since then things have
been running smoothly until a couple of weeks ago when the computers update software prompt came up. One update
was for security, the other update was for java. I figured both were important so of course I updated. From the next day forth
my mac has been taking at least 10 minutes to boot up and another 4-5 minutes to open up a browser. These beneficial updates
seem to be doing more harm than good. Can anybody help? Thanks!

There are no known issues with any of the updates for Mac OS X.
There is a very high chance that your hard drive might be to blame. Apple provide the highest quality of hard drives and many others are not as good and may cause performance issues.
I would suggest that you delete any un-nesescary files and empty your trash, internet history (which can take up gigabytes of space on older Macs) and un-needed pictures. I did this last year (after backing up all the files just in case) and it sped up my start up speed.
I would al;so reccommend using an application called CleanMyMac which will give you back tens of gigabytes of space (40GB for me!).
The more space you use the longer it takes for the computer to locate and load files which can slow processes down, so deleting files will help your problem a lot.
Hope this helps!!!

  • Leopard takes almost 4 minutes to start

Every since I upgraded to Leopard, after starting up, the rainbow wheel spins for about 4 minutes and then the desktop folders pop up. Every single time I reboot the machine. Can someone tell me what the problem could possibly be.
    Thanks

Reset Parameter memory (PRAM). PRAM holds copies of various system settings for rapid access, and if it gets out of whack all sorts of odd things can happen.
To reset PRAM, Shut Down the computer. Locate the 4 keys Apple-Option-P-R. Press and hold those 4 keys, and while doing so, press and release the power button. Keep those 4 keys held down until you hear the SECOND startup chime and then release them. Your computer will continue to boot up normally.
If the problem still exists, look for messages that are logged during the boot up and log in process (Applications / Utilities / Console -- select "All Messages" in the column on the left). Now there are lots of messages that are thrown even during a NORMAL boot and log in, and some of them will look pretty scary if you aren't used to them, but what you are looking for are messages related to things terminating with errors or retrying multiple times.
Another possible workaround is to create a new account. If you don't have the problem logging into that new account then you can copy your personal files over and manually adjust the preferences the way you like and, eventually, delete the old account that is giving you problems. If you DO have problems with the new account then you know it is a system level thing as opposed to something peculiar to your account.
The system will not be using anything stashed in the Previous System folder during boot up and log in.

are you using sample base instruments in those projects a lot using exs or kontakt? when paths to samples get messed up for some reason it can result in along waiting times each time a project is loaded.
lately my kontakt samples get loaded without any sign of activity. if it is a large orchestral score i see a dead screen for quite a while before suddenly everything pops up and is ready to work with. i recall seeing progress bars or similar things in the past though...
repair permissions and defragging (idefrag) may help as well.
btw. i can drink as much coffee as i want late at night, even five minutes later i can sleep well. seems i am immune. but right now i am also having plenty of hardware issues to deal with so that's a good thing i guess...!

Freedome 1.0.1565.0Freedome Server Sachsen, DEMac OS X 10.10.3Macbook 13" early 2011 Hi all, after rebooting or after sleep wake it takes almost 1 minute that Freedome activates a secured connection via my wifi. Any chance that you guys speed up the connecting phase? Thanks.

I also remembered a trick that worked for me on my home network (Windows 7, 10.6.3). I renamed the Windows 7 WokGroup name to a custom name. Then on my 10.6.3 machine I went into System Preferences->Network, Advanced button, WINS tab and put in the new WORKGROUP name and in the box bellow I added the Windows 7 IP. After about 5 minutes the Windows 7 appeared in my Finder's sidebar and I could connect using my Windows login name & password. However it would disappear upon ejecting the mounted share but I could still Command+K to it.
On the windows 7 I am not using the Windows 7 "HomeGroup" but an only doing simple file sharing.
Plus read this Apple thread and try some of the hints there.

When I try to open a file with TextEdit, I get the spinning beachball and the file takes almost a minute to open. When I just start TextEdit everything is fine. Also when I log on with another account TextEdit works like a charm, even when opening an existing file.
What I have done so far:
    checked permissions in Disk Utility
    validated all fonts
    deleted all canon printer drivers
    deleted all preferences
Nothing has helped. Mail shows the same behavior as TextEdit. What else can I do? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • JDeveloper 11.1.1.7 takes over 45 minutes to start

    Hi,
I have windows 7 64 bit with 64 bit JDK 1.7. My jDeveloper 11.1.1.7 takes over 45 minutes to start, even the previous versions took similar long time. I have McAfee running on my system and have 8 GB RAM and more than 100 GB HDD on my C drive. I tried playing with the tuning parameters as mentioned in few blogs, but nothing seems to help.
    Please help.

Indeed, McAfee caches what it has previously scanned. I've had different versions of McAfee where this has been, and hasen't been a problem.
It's pretty easy to tell on Windows if McAfee is the culprit. Open the Task Manager and watch is McAfee active (consuming CPU) during the whole process of opening JDev.
If so you're going to have to work with your IT department to get exemptions for JDev put in place if it is.

  • FCP takes 15-20 minutes to start, once it's loaded plug-ins

Once plug-ins are loaded and RT bits are done, FCP 7 takes 15-20 minutes to start. I've closed projects, I've deleted preferences, repaired disk permissions but still no joy.
Activity Utility suggests that FCP is looking for a previous files assets.
    Had anyone else experienced this?
    Many thanks

By default, FCP will try to load the last project that was active.
While 15-20 minutes is a long time to try loading even a missing project and it's media, you might try turning this option off. Click in the menu bar where you see *Final Cut Pro* in bold typeface.
    Go to User Preferences.
De-select the option "Open last project on application launch" in the General tab.
    Post back with your results.

Have you recently replaced your drive or RAM?  If so, try resetting your PRAM.  This is a common problem after replacement.  After I replaced my drive, when I first turned my machine on I thought I screwed up the drive replacment since the Apple logo didn't come up... thankfully it eventually came up.  After resetting the PRAM, it booted as quickly as it had previously.  I've had this happen on two machines:

Since installing Snow Leopard and then Lion on my Intel-based iMac two weeks ago, my iTunes program seems to open at will whenever the computer is on.   It often begins playing music, as well.  What is causing this and how do I make it stop?

There are ways to minimize, mitigate, and help avoid a lot of problems.
    Bootable backups.
Zeroing a drive twice before using, and format it with SL DVD Apple Disk Utility for sure.
Even a clean install should import old apps without having to reauthorize.
If you must do an upgrade, do it from the SL DVD, after repairing the drive and be sure to use the SL version of Alsoft Disk Warrior (4.2).
Wait six months before jumping on a new OS.
10% is still too many. Yes, it is more sensitive to RAM and hard drive errors, doesn't like some controllers; most ext hdd cases; and enough software to make for test-only status. And it only IDs some known incompatible applications, drivers, extensions, etc and does not remove even those always in best manner.
Plus, there are problems with the new Rosetta and the cache files it now uses. So some apps and plug-ins will cause more trouble. Not all are ready. Good reason to hold off for the months it takes.
Other devices act different as far as on/off behavior.
(Migrating from G5s to Mac Pro can cause all kinds of problems, weird behavior, sluggish system, and why anyone that went down that road was strongly recommended to NOT use Migration Assistant for any of their applications, and to ONLY do clean/fresh installs of any apps. If you skipped that day, didn't read the Guide to M.A., or didn't want to do fresh installs then, your system could have been on borrowed time. If you did do clean install of applications, great.
Installing SL can result in a corrupt directory - I think and it "seems" to be happening, but no real proof, just gut feeling and instinct (underlying file system problem? weak sectors that pre-existed waiting to happen?).
Remember all the "there just aren't a lot of 64-bit drivers" for Vista and XP? it's come home to roost.
... my guess is not enough incense and offerings. To hop into TimeMachine and SuperDuper backup images and pull the 1TB for another day (week, month, year).

Backup in case your disk is failing.
Start up in Safe Mode;  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14204?viewlocale=en_US
If it boots reliably in Safe Mode then it is probably a software issue.
    Reset PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
Boot in Recovery Mode.  (Hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys as your computer restarts.)  Run Disk Utility.  Click on the upper left system disk icon.  Does S.M.A.R.T. report “Verified”?  If not the disk is failing and will need to be replaced.  Click on the icon underneath and indented to the right, usually called “Macintosh HD”.  Repair Disk.  It should finish normally with a green OK message.  If it does not try to repair it again.
If it will not finish with the green OK message then use Disk Utility to erase the drive and then reinstall OS X.  (Be sure you have a backup before erasing the disk.  Post back if you need instructions on how to do that.)
If it repaired all errors and is still not booting normally, reinstall OS X.
If it is still sick after all these steps then the disk probably needs to be replaced.  You can do that inexpensively and fairly easily yourself or take it to an Apple store for them to do it for you at a higher cost.  If it is still under warranty or AppleCare have Apple do it for you for free.  Post back if you need instructions on replacing the disk.  You may want to have Apple check the health of the system and disk before replacing it yourself.

    Hello Susan.
It's possible that you are having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not caused by one (or more than one) of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] (don't forget to select ''Disable all add-ons'' when you start safe mode). If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes this article] for information about troubleshooting extensions and themes and [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+plugins this one] for plugins.
If you need support for one of your add-ons, you'll have to contact its author.
If the problem is not disappears when all add-ons are disabled, please tell me, so we can work from there.

Apple told developers they were removing that service over two years ago. The developers that depended upon it should have done something about it.
Why did they remove it? My guess is because it was pretty crappy, was difficult to maintain, and wasn't a good solution for multiple devices that could get the info without tethering to a "base" Mac.
