Mac takes windows computer name

my macbook is the only mac in a windows network at my office. somehow my macbook has taken the name of a windows computer on the network. in finder-network-server the name that show up is the name of a windows computer but if i click on it, it shows the contents of my macbook harddrive. I have tried many times to change my computer name in system preferenceses and it makes now\ difference. In the Sharing preference panel it say other users can acces my computer at afp://d530-ss.mydomain.com or browse for menegroth. d530-ss is the name of the other windows computer, menegroth is the name i gave to the mac. i've change the computer name and changed the localhost name by pressing edit. The computer name stays the same, being the windows name, even when i take my macbook home and connect it to my all mac home network. is this and issue with the dns server at my work nerwork. I work for a small company and i'm basically the it department, not my main job, so any help would be great. the file server is a windows 2000 server

Export list of windows computer names with a specific relationship

I'm trying to export only the name (netbios name) of a list of windows computers to a text file if it meets the following criteria.
Relationship Type = "RelatedConfigItem" > Name = "Example A"
In other words, if the windows computer is related to another configuration item (Environment CI) with the name "Example A" it exports the computer name to a text file. I beleive this can be done via powershell but I'm a bit new at powershell.
Any thought on how this would be accomplished?

This is great! One issue... When forming a relationship between a Windows Computer CI and an Environment CI it forms a one way relationship (even
though it shows in the related items tab on either CI).

All that to say, we form our relationship from the Windows Computer (source) to the Environment (target). As such, when running the powershell
script you provided it produces no results.
Is there a way to reformat the script to identify Windows Computers that meet the same criteria...

Saving and Opening files from Flash Drive Mac to Windows Computer

Hi!
I recently purchased a generic Flash drive (2gb). I am having problems saving things on it. Sometimes when i drag a file to the flash drive icon it doesn't load properly or transfers well. I try opening it and it says: "FILE ERROR
Couldn't open the file. It may be corrupt or a file format that Preview doesn't recognize." Some documents do open well. I also tried opening files on a windows computer and it says it has to be formated. I format it and of course everything deletes.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

OK. I did.
But here is the problem, it still doesn't save certain file on the flash drive. Most of the files are either jpg.,cwk.,pdf., or mov.
The mov. won't even play. It works fine when i save files from a windows computer, but not when i save from my mac.
I really have no idea why its doing this. I am aware that certain file can't be opened from a mac to a window, but i just don't know why, when i place a file into the flash drive icon and try to re-open it, it says the error message again (On my mac).

It might be in sytem properties. Otherwise, you can get it by creating an InetAddress on yourself (I believe)

My windows laptop has crashed and cannot be made.
I bought a iMac and PE 13
Now I need to convert my PE5 catalog AND my PE13 catalog to the mac version and then import in PE 13
can anybody help?

Actually, the only way this could work would be if you had a full backup and access to a windows computer, since the mac version can't read a windows catalog older than PSE 9. So without one, if you could get your photos off the old machine, you'd still have to start over with the cataloging, I'm afraid.

Using Office Mac on Windows computer

Dear All
I created Word files with Office Mac on my Macbook, and when I want to use them on a Windows 2000 computer I am unable to read them. Is there a way to use them on Word 2000 on this Windows 2000 computer because its my work computer? I have tried saving them as RTF files on the Macbook but I am still unable to read them. Can someone please assist me?

Can I use my 4th gen iPod on Mac AND Windows computer?

My main household computer is a Mac. It also contains our main iTunes Library, and everything else. However, when I went to hook up my iPod to my HP mini (net book), my iTunes and my laptop both said that I had to format my iPod before I could use it on that computer. Why is this? I did not have to do so with my iTouch. Is there a way around this? I really would like to transfer my purchased songs onto the net book, but I cannot access the iPod at all with out formatting it.

Install the MacDrive trial, or if you just want to transfer the songs, use a network connection or a drive other than the iPod to do it.

Computer name change automatic

my macs change the Computer name automatic. in the System Setings / Share / Computername show me the mac the Correct one. But in the terminal with the command "hostname" shows me something diferent. but when I change the computername in the terminal with sudo hostname "correct name", after restart it change the computername again.
This Problem happen on a iMac 27", Mac mini, Mac Book air und Mac Book Pro.
I think its somthing wrong with the osx os. With Windows or Unix os i Never seen this Problem befor.

the biggest problem is, when the mac join to the open directory LDAP. without rename in the terminal he think his name is a difrent one. and the mac login with his wrong name to the server. if i have a problem with the logins. i have no chance to find the computer who make the problem. so its necessary that the name are always the same. not one time this name and after next reboot a diffrent one.

Mac to Windows file reading!

Hi this is a question for people who own a mac and windows computer. I just wanted to know if I write something on Microsoft office for MAC and then save it on my USB, will I be able to read and edit the file on my Windows PC? if not how can I do that? Thanks so much!!

More often the problems are with which vendor USB drive case than anything.
And if you want to stay NTFS to retain metadata or something, NTFS driver for Mac OS such as Paragon will mount and copy just fine and allow large files and volumes.

Computer name changes after security update

We installed the latest security update for OS X 10.5.8 and after installation the computer name was automatically changed. It was "Name (2)". After the update it magically became "Name (3)". It becomes very confusing because we share this computer's printer with a Macbook and it can't find the shared printer after this happens. Is this normal? It has happened after two security updates.

This is how it SHOULD be. When you try to rename a Mac in a LAN to a Computer Name which is already given to another Mac in the LAN, Mac OS X will suggest to add a number to the name you tried. When you rename the Mac to this Computer Name before you connect to the LAN Mac OS X will add the number automatically.
But the problem this thread is about (imho) is that Macs with UNIQUE Computer Names in the LAN, unexpectedly add a number, when there is for sure no other computer with that exact name in the LAN.
I can witness this behavior round about two to three times in a month in our network of over one hundred Macs.
By the way: Not only the Computer Name will change but the Local Hostname too.
Computer Name: "Example Name" -> "Example Name (2)"
Local Hostname: "Example-Name.local" -> "Example-Name-2.local"
This looks more like a bug in the system than an operating error.
Any suggestions anyone?

Computer Name changed...why? How?

Had a weird one, thought I'd post it here. I just noticed that my Mac mini's computer name is "administrators-mac-mini". It's weird because I'd previously set it to something completely different.
Anybody know why a Mac would suddenly start calling itself something else?

Wonder what that's all about. As far as I know, I wasn't setting up or otherwise doing anything with Appletalk or bonjour at that time. Other log files show no activity or connections from nefarious IP addresses. Probably something totally innocuous...but still...weird.

Can i take a a hard drive from a windows computer, enclosure it and use it on my mac as a dual boot?

I would like to take a hard drive from my old Windows computer which already has Windows 7 installed an use it on my mac as a dual boot. How would i go around doing this so i could keep all the files i already within this hard drive? I have the hard in an enclosure so i just need to know how i could use on my iMac, If anyone could take the time to get back to this i would appreciate it, Thanks!
