Mac thinks my USB flash thumb drive is a blank CD

I just got a new flash drive (Sandisk Cruizer 1gig). When it's inserted, Finder launches an error message saying "You inserted a blank CD. Choose and action for the pop-up menu or click ignore".
I've used a dozen different flash drives on this machine, never had this message.
I reformatted the drive using disk utility as both OS and MS-DOS, and the message continues.
I get the same message on my iBook.
Any suggestions to get rid of this?

Hi
From what you have said, I would be suspecting the flash drive to be defective. See if you can exchange it at the shop.

  • Boot Installation media from USB flash/Pen Drive?

    Hi there,
The hardrive on my X60 died. Died so badly that even Resue and Recovery wouldn't start yet alone Windows (even in safe mode).
I have a new hard drive and installation media en route from Lenovo (laptop was under warranty)
The problem is that the installation media is on CD/DVD and my laptop does not have an optical drive.
    So my questions are:
    1. Can the installation media be installed from a USB Pen/Flash drive? (the BIOS does support USB booting)
    2. Does anyone have experience of this or instructions?
On a side note I find it slightly irritating that even under warranty Lenovo won't supply me software/hardware that will return my laptop to its original state without the user, me, potentially having to buy an external optical drive. The warranty support chap said "you'll just need to buy an external USB optical drive" - *sighs*
    Cheers
    Lawrence

    Tnx 4 ur reply RX-8.
I bought the lappie used. It had BIOS ver. 103 when I bought it, so I upgraded to ver. 111 and it kept on booting from pen drives just fine.
A few days after I bought it, the internal HDD failed with S.M.A.R.T. ID 5, something about reallocated sectors count. I got an exact replacement for the dead HDD. When I installed it, I unplugged the lappie's battery, then plugged the battery back in before I buttoned it all up. I think THAT was the start of my USB flash pen drive boot problem.
The new HDD is fine. It passes the HGST Drive Fitness Test with long SMART test, which takes between 2 and 3 hours.
I tried the EC update. Inside the zip file was a TXT file with a link to an MSI page that has a PDF file on how to do the EC update. I had that PDF open on another machine when I did the EC update so I could follow the instructions exactly.
After an F9 on the UEFI screen to restore defaults and an F10 to save the UEFI config, I rebooted and everything seemed OK. I then used a pin to force a reset. For the second time, I unplugged the lappie and waited a few minutes for the EC memory to clear.
I still have the same problem. I can't boot from a USB flash pen drive.
I'm enclosing shots of my USB config with XHCI enabled and disabled. I tried to boot from a pen drive with both XHCI settings. No joy. Will I ever be able to boot from a USB flash pen drive again?
I should also mention that I have a portable HDD with a USB 3 interface that boots just fine on other machines but won't boot on the GS60 Ghost. The LED on the portable HDD comes on and the lappie screen just sits there with a blinking underscore cursor.

  • How to transfer  photos from a MAC to a USB external storage drive?

How to transfer  photos from a MAC to a USB external storage drive?

Just the Photos? Or the Library?
    If it's the Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Disk Utility - Won't Repair Flash/Thumb Drive

So my Mac froze for some reason, while my Kingston thumb/flash drive was in. I tried to eject it, but I could only force eject (which it said may cause issues). After that, whenever I put the thumb drive in, it said something like the drive won't work and I had to copy the files to my desktop. When I go into disk utility and click repair disk, it says this:  "Disk Utility stopped repairing “UNTITLED 1”: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."
I can't erase the thumbdrive, because it says I need a source, which I don't know what that means.
Can anybody help? The files are useless now as I have transferred them to a CD, so I'm fine with erasing the whole thing. And yes, I know I can get a new on at any store for cheap, but I'd like to know if this can be repaired. Thanks.

You haven't mentioned how the thumb drive was formatted to begin with; is it GUID partition map and Mac OS Extended (Journalled), or is it FAT 32 with MBR partition map?
If it's the latter, DU can't repair it, but should be able to format it. However, the forced ejection may have damaged the file system to prevent that.
If it's FAT32, re-format it on a PC and try again on the Mac.
If it's Mac formatted, you could try erasing and reformatting on another Mac (or as Hackintosh says, from the DVD), but if that doesn't work, try the PC route; reformat to FAT32 on a PC (if the PC will recognise it - thay don't always), then go back to the Mac, repartition and format.
If that fails, it's recycling fodder.

  • Trouble connecting 1 of 3 macs to my airport extreme thumb drive!

I'm not good at using the terminal so I leave it alone. The other 2 macs in the house can hook up to my thumb drive hooked up to my airport extreme. This Imac won't and I get an error saying that" the text entered does not appear to be a recognized URL formant". I am using the correct address afp://10.0.1.1 . I get a message that my mac does not recognize the url and that they normally start with the prefex afp (which mine does). 2 other macs in the house pick it up perfectly.I ran repair permissions and it said that the following errors could not be fixed
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/Filesystems/AppleShare/afpLoad" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskManagement.framework/Versions/A/Resources /DiskManagementTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "usr/sbin/pppd" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "usr/sbin/vpnd" has been modified and will not be repaired.
I think I'm on to something but I don't know how to repair these files, especially the first one. Any Ideas?

    Hi Shadow99999
Did you ever resolve your issues with disconnection between your Mac Pro and Airport Extreme? I am having a similar issue.
I have had the extreme for about 4 months and I loose access to the internet about once a month. When I try to troubleshoot the Airport Extreme it is usually inaccessible from my Mac Pro which is my wired access point. The Airport Utility times out with a network error number that unfortunately I did not write down. The light is still green but nothing seems to be working. The first time I tried plugging and unplugging ethernet wires and accessing wirelessly through a Macbook but now I just unplug the Airport Extreme and replug (a Microsoft solution with no problem resolution.) Today I had some unusual internet traffic on my DSL modem and I wanted to look at the Airport Extreme but again I was unable to get to the Airport Extreme with the Airport Utility on my MacPro. (Everything up to the latest rev. per software update.)
The lack of access between the Airport Extreme and a wired computer is really frustrating and may drive me back to my trusty five year old Buffalo Airstation. I could at least log in when I suspected there was a problem. Loss of internet access with the Buffalo was down to maybe once every 6 months to year and lock ups to wired access even rarer.
Any other thread that you found to help you resolve your problem?

  • Best format for a USB flash memory drive?

I got this flash memory drive - one of those little stick things. It is 1GB. When I plugged it into my Mac it didn't mount, so I reformatted it at Mac Extended Journaled.
I put some photos on it and took it to one of those photo printing machines, but it couldn't mount the drive.
I reformatted it again as Mac Extended (without the journaled), but that didn't help.
What is the recommended format for these drives so they are the most widely compatible with other machines, particular Windows.
    Thanks!

i want my usb drive to be formatted to fat32 system, but disk utility always format it as fat16. i'm having problems copying multiple files onto it under fat16.
i've tried selecting "ms-dos file system" under volume format, but no avail.

  • USB Flash Boot Drive

I created a USB flash drive a few months ago to assist in imaging Surface Pro 3 Tablets and that flash drive is working great. Today I am trying to create a second flash drive and it will not see any Task Sequences and just errors out. I have created both
of them identically, same setting, same boot image, same user account, same brand/type flash drive (tried two different drives), yet the newer one will not see the advertised task sequences and just comes up as failed just before I am able to choose the Task
Sequence. If I boot the tablet with the older created USB drive it works perfectly then power off and reboot with the new one and it will not see the advertisements...?  We are an HTTP environment and I am choosing Create Task Sequence
Media | Bootable Media | Dynamic media | USB Flash Drive | no Password | Cert Date are default (Today through one year from now) | Boot image is the same one that I always use | DP same | MP Same | no prestart commands.
    Any thoughts?

Ok thank for your replies, I saw them this morning but have not sat at my desk until now.... one of those days.  So I am not sure why, don't have the time to investigate, but the 'Dynamic Media' option is no longer working however I am and to create
a USB Stick as 'Site-based Media' and that is working for me.  Dynamic used to work and for some reason it broke.  I appreciate the replies and when I get time I will look at those log but wanted to reply so you don't think i forgot ;)

  • Mac not recognizing USB external hard drive

My Mac OS X 10.5.8 isn't recognizing my Samsung USB external hard drive. The hard drive has already been formatted for a Mac (rather than PC). My computer has recognized the external hard drive before with no problems. I've used it on a campus computer to copy video files from a documentary I was filming, and I've also used it on another campus computer to copy video files from a multimedia piece. I still need these files, so having to erase my hard drive would be DEVASTATING. Now, my computer won't recognize my external hard drive, even when I have it plugged in before turning on my computer.
When I go to Disk Utility, my mac recognizes it, but when I try to repair and verify it says that it failed.
It's also not a problem with the external hard drive because I've plugged it into another computer and it is recognized on the other computer.
    What should I do?

When I go to Disk Utility, my mac recognizes it, but when I try to repair and verify it says that it failed.
Sounds like it's very badly damaged, and it may be too much to expect the data to still be intact. However, you can try repairing it with a more powerful utility, like [DiskWarrior|http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/index.html] or [TechTool Pro|http://www.micromat.com>. If neither of those can fix it, then your only options will be using a data recovery tool, such as [Data Rescue|http://www.prosofteng.com> or [File Salvage|http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1], or paying an expensive data recovery service to disassemble the drive and recover what they can.
Of course, this would all have been avoided if you had backups of your data. In the future, you must have a minimum of three copies of any data you don't want to lose.

  • My USB Stick(Thumb Drive) not Supported and Anothe...

I have 8Gig Patriot Thumb drive. I used OTG USB cable to connect it to my N8 but phone says USB Device is not supported. ALso When I try to connect my Iomega External Hard drive I get the same error.  Can this be possible? Cause patriot and iomega is very well known company in hard drive and thumb drive. I would be very surprise if N8 doesn't support their products.
So can anyone confirmed for me that  those companies simply not supported in N8 or I am getting at error which I am not suppose to.
Also there is one more thing, I usually have around 8.9gig left in internal memory. Whenever I try to move 6 gig Mkv files to internal drive I am keep getting error that there isn't enough memory left. Then I tried with my 16gig microsd card. It had 14.9 gig memory left and I tried to copy 6.9 gig Mkv file to microsd card. I got the same error. So can any help please?
    Thanks

Not a computer engineer but isn't this like using a PC with less than 10% free space, it all becomes unworkable. For internal memory doesn't it have to allocate 6GB first leaving it less than 3GB to actually carry out the task?

  • USB Flash Memory Drive.

USB one end and Apple approved 30-pin dock connector the other.
Has anyone used one of the above and if so how good are they?  Can you load films on the drive and watch on the New iPad (3)?

theoretically, you can hook up a USB flash drive via the camera kit and import movies. BUt there are a lot of hoops.
First, I've literally had a 50/50 success rate. most drives pull more power than the 30 pin port can handle so be prepared for trial and error finding one that works.
Second, all video files must follow a very strict naming convention. There must be a top level folder labeled DCIM and all video files must be inside that. In addition, those files must have a 8 character name. (MOV34567.mp4 for example)
Presuming you find a flash drive that works and load those video files onto the flash drive in the appropriate manner, then when you hook it up you will not see any names. You may not see thumbnails either. All I ever see is black, but that may be because the first frame is black.
Third, you cannot view off the stick, nor can you preview. You must import the video into the photos app, try to open it in the photos app which will then open the video app. So you must have enough free space on your iPad to allow you to import the video. You then, in essence, blindly import, watch and delete.
If you use an SD card instead of the USB you do remove the issues with the drive pulling too much power, but you still have to follow the naming and importing convention.
So it does work, but you're basically making a system do something it wasn't designed to do so you have to have the patience to find the work arounds.  If you're fairly tech savvy you can pull it off (I have a small collection of SD cards with videos on them and it does work), but if someone isn't tech savvy then they may want to just stick with apps or buying from iTunes etc. A person has to have the time and skill to make the work arounds work. (And be willing to adapt when/if Apple again tweaks things...for example, back on 2011 the 30 pin port used to put out more power but then a software update reduced that and reduced things that used to work with the iPad, so you never know how long work arounds will work, may be forever, may have a limited life span)

  • Standard Mac users cannot eject Flash installer drive image

We recently distributed Flash to 130 macs and it defaulted for auto update. Whenever it auto updates, it mounts a flash player drive image to the desktop. Unfortunately all the users are standard users and they cannot eject the mounted drive image without an administrator logon. I have wasted hours logging into each computer to manually eject these drives. How can I reverse this behavior?
We are using apple remote desktop

    Hello,
Since your users do not have Admin rights to install software, you'll want to disable auto-updates on each machine.  The update settings are stored in the /Library/Application Support/mms.cfg file.  You'll want to make sure the AutoUpdateDisable and SilentAutoUpdateEnable settings are configured as follows:
    AutoUpdateDisable=1
    SilentAutoUpdateEnable=0
This will disable ALL updates for these machines, as such, you'll want to distribute updates via some other mechanism to ensure your users have the latest secure versions when they're released.
Enterprise deployment information is documented in the Adobe Flash Player Administration Guide for Flash Player | Adobe Developer Connection.

  • USB Hard / Thumb Drives and lost / hidden / duplicate new folders

It seems I can force this problem to happen consistently on multiple MacBooks with different USB storage devices. Her is what happens:
Connect a USB external hard drive or data stick
    Open Finder on that device
Create a new folder with keyboard short cut command (CMDShiftN)
quickly type the name of the new folder
    THEN the following happens:
two! new folders will appear with the new name
Sometimes an adjacent folder gets renamed to the new name, yet the contents in both folders are the same (which is empty, due to the newly created folder)
if I switch views (from Icon to panes or list), both of the new folders disappear
If I switch back to icon view, both re appear
If I delete one (does not matter which) then both are deleted (sent to trash, thank goodness) including the adjacent folder which had other data in it!
IF I type the new name of the newly made folder real slow, then all seems to work well
I purchased my mac in June 06. This just happened today. I run 10.4.10 with latest firmware. Plugged in a USB 1GB Centon Data Stick.
Two days ago, my buddy, who just bought his MacBook last month, described the same problem. He had an external W.D. USB drive (powered from the Mac). He spent a day creating folders and organizing data. He said every once in a while, it would happen to him, especially on new folders with short names). I thought it was user error, since he was new to the architecture. Ironically, he was sitting next to me when it happened to me today.

I have only seen this reported as happening with things on a server, or on an external drive that is formatted for Windows (FAT32). How is your USB drive formatted? If it is not Mac OS Extended, see this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4036998
It appears to be a Finder bug. You can either live with it, or else copy the files somewhere else then reformat the drive and put them back.
