Mac-to-Mac Internet Printing

I'm trying to do something that should be very, very simple: set up my Powerbook to print to my home printer (a USB HP DeskJet 840C hooked to an iMac. Both computers are running OS X 10.3.9 Panther) while I'm on the road.
This should be exceptionally easy. The iMac has a stable DNS name, so I pull up Printer Setup Utility, choose IP Printing, choose Internet Printing Protocol, type the DNS name into Printer Address, and type the queue name garnered from Show Info on the wired printer. When I try to print, CUPS returns "Destination printer does not exist!" The URI is <foo.com:631/ipp/PRINTER_NAME>. This should work. It doesn't. So, apparently, printers are kept at /printers rather than /ipp. (Why Panther doesn't know this is beyond me. But actually, CUPS doesn't seem to know it either, as the suggested URIs in the web interface use /ipp.) So I change /ipp to /printers, and lo and behold! The Powerbook apparently sees the remote printer. It spools, and....nothing happens. Ever. The print job vanishes into thin air. Well, not quite; the Completed Jobs log on the iMac does indeed list the print job as Completed. But completed to where I have no idea as my printer never so much as coughed.
Now, before you go thinking there's something wrong with my printer, when I log into the iMac remotely using <http://hostname:631> and print a test page, everything works swimmingly.
So..help? Please? If the only answer there is is something overwhelmingly technical; that's fine. I can handle a command line. I just need to get this working!
Thanks.

Well, what do you know; I fixed it. After I wrote this, a horrible feeling came over me, as I remembered something I had seen when logged into CUPS on the iMac: The Device URI of the printer. It was "file:///dev/null". "What if," I thought, "THAT was where the print jobs were being spooled to? That would certainly explain why they seemed to vanish into nothingness...they DID." So I created a new printer on the iMac, using GIMP drivers this time, hooked up to THAT one from the PowerBook...and wonder of wonders, it worked.
So...thanks for the help.

  • How to set up my MAC to print on XP wireless Router

Is there a site out here where I can get detailed instructions (in proper sequence) to get my wife's brand new laptop to print on shared network We have an XP laptop and desktop. Desktop is hooked up to a hp2175 printer. I had no problems using the wireless router to access the internet, but now I'm really at a lost of how to get the mac to print like my XP laptop.
Any help and detailed guidance is appreciated.

    1. Set it up with the iCloud options in System Preferences. I am not sure you will get a mac.com address unless you alrady have one, probably a .icloud.com
    2. I have used it for 6 years and I am happy with it.
    3. Don't know.

If you have Lion and wireless you can use Airdrop to copy files back and forth. (You don't need an internet connection, just two reasonably recent Lion machines with WiFi cards.)

  • How can I get Mac to print wirelessly?

I have a g5 iMac and a g4 IMac that connect to the internet via a wireless Belkin router. I have two HP printers (a laserjet and an officejet) connected with an ethernet cable to the router.
The g4 machine quickly identified both printers as "Internet printers" so I added them and was able to print wirelessly to both printers.
The g5 machine is able to print wirelessly to the officejet, but does not "see" the laserjet when I attempt to add it. I have tried everything, including setting up the printer manually by entering its IP address, and I can add the printer this way but I can't print.
What the g5 sees is both printers under "Bonjour Shared" kind, but if I select these and add them, it is unable to print (I either get a message that says "connecting to printer", which can last for hours, or I get a message indicating "Job accepted" but still nothing prints).
Before I switched Internet providers, both Macs could print wirelessly to both printers (I recently switched from a DSL provider to a cable provider, and then back to my old DSL provider).

I am confused. Neither iMac of which you speak will run Mac OS X 6.4 Snow Leopard, but that is the OS you profile.
What versions of Mac OS X are these old Macs actually running? Do you think that folks who have these Macs would be a better crowd to ask for assistance than folks with architecturally different Macs? We here have Intel Macs. Most of us have Snow Leopard. You are asking for help with two old PPC Macs, neither if which can actually run Snow Leopard.
    Just an idea.

  • Mac/Windows Printer Sharing

I have an HP officejet d135 attached to my windows XP home computer.
Both my Mac Mini and Windows is going through a router. Both machines can see each other on the network and I can share files.
The problem is that I cant seem to get Mac to print properly. It sees the printer when I try to do it through samba and when I hit print the printer fires up but all I get is junk out of it.
I have tried the help pages and cant seem to work it out.
I am a noob swithcher so my knowledge base on Mac is limited.
Can anyone offer any suggestions as to how to cure this.
    TIA

    Hi,
I am facing a similar problem... my father uses WinXP at home, with a HP Deskjet 3920 attached to it. I convinced my mother to buy a G4 iBook, and now she's all happy about it. I just set up a wireless internet connection at their home, and I am trying to use dad's printer from mom's iBook. The printer is being shared just fine, and I guess my problem is driver related as well.
Printer type is set as PS as default, and I believe this printer isn't PS-capable: print job gets into XP's queue, but printer refuses to print it. However, if I try to set its type to the right printer model, my printer simply doesn't appear on the options of HP printers. I then went to HP's drivers site and apparently they do have a driver for this model: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=44544 2&lang=en&os=219
I downloaded and installed both the HP Inkjet Driver and the web installers for Deskjet printers; installations seemed to go by just fine, but still the Deskjet 3920 doesn't appear on the list of available HP printers. Any ideas? I am probably missing something, but I can't figure out what it is...
On a related issue: since they did me no good, how do I uninstall these drivers? (I am a seasoned Linux user, but I am still finding my way around on Macs; so, please bear with my newbie questions =))
    TIA
    Andre

    Hello gumbsali,
Most or our current model printers are compatible with the Mac OS X Mountain Lion operating system; so we can provide you with the best recommendation, please reply with the following information:
      1.  Will you need to have faxing ability?
      2.  What is the largest size paper you will need to print?

      4.  Will you need the ability to scan?
      5.  Is there a specific price range you are looking to stay within?
      6.  Will you need the option of using the printer wirelessly?
      7.  How many pages a month do you estimate you will be printing?
      8.  What is the heaviest weight (in lbs) of paper (or cardstock) that you plan on using in the printer?
      9.  Will you need the ability to have the printer interface with an iPad, iPhone or Android phone?
    10.  Will you need the ability to print photos and images directly from a memory card?

  • Can the mac air print to HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus Wireless e-All-in-One?

Can the mac air print to HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 plus Wireless e-all-in-one?

AirPrint is an iOS 5 protocol.  It is not used on the Mac or Lion.  What you *can* do is add the wireless printer to you network and print from the mac using that.

  • Printing to a Mac shared printer from windows 8

How can I print to a Mac shared printer (OS: 10.8.2) from my Windows 8 PC which is using the same Apple network?
    Matthias

I have tried using Bonjour on for Windows on Win8 however while it finds the printer and can add it no problem whenever a job is sent to the printer a blank page is printed. The Win8 machine can print to the printer fine if directly connected and the same driver is used when printing via Bonjour so one can only assume it's a "communications" issue between the Win8 machine and my Mac Pro which is sharing the printer.

I'm having problems sharing a MAC internet connection with windows
    I've done, successfully:
    Internet <--> XP <--> MAC
but now I want to do:
    Internet <--> MAC <--> XP
Is there a simple guide somewhere?

On the PC in a browser try http://17.254.0.91
Doesn't find the MAC site - hangs
How is the Mac connecting to the internet (ethernet
for example), how are you trying to share it (airport
    for example).
Mac connects USB Speedtouch USB ADSL modem
Sharing via ethernet connection 192.168.2.1 255.255.255.0 - firewalled
Firewall on MAC and XP switched on - even with XP Fw switched off it doesn't work. XP = 192.168.2.2 via Gateway of 198.168.2.1 255.255.255.0

  • Elements 10 for MAC cannot print 8x10 on Canon mp970?

Elements 10 for MAC cannot print 8x10 photos on a Canon MP970 printer . I get a box that says can only print at 220 resolution. What should I do?

That's not quite what it's saying. It's tell you that at the physical size you chose (presumably 8 x10) your photo has fewer than 220 pixels per inch. So you can print 8 x 10 but the quality may not be first rate, since the original image just doesn't have enough pixels in it to print at that size with more pixel density.

  • My Mac stoped printing. I am on ox 10.9 and I have a HP Officejet 6700 premium

My Mac stoped printing. I am on ox 10.9 and I have a HP Officejet 6700 premium. I've reinstalled the drivers and tried several time . . . It just keeps telling me that the printer is busy.
I also have a PC hocked up to the network and it prints fine.
There is nothing wrong with my mac either because I have a dymo printer hocked up and it prints fine . . .
    What gives?

    Hi HappyHarpo,
Thanks for your post and welcome to the HP Forum.
At first step I suggest to restart your Mac and printer. If printer is in a network, also reboot the router first. Then try printing again.
If it still fails, I suggest to reset the printing system. Open Printers & Scanners and right-click the left side with the listed printer then choose Reset Printing System.
Then add the printer again, make sure next to "Use" the HP Printer/driver is selected correctly, and test printing.
    Best regards,
    Mandy

  • Mac not printing to Windows Epson Colorburst RIP after update

I know there are several other threads going about this, but Apple needs to get the message that this is their issue.
We have an Epson 4880 running off of the Epson Colorburst RIP on a Windows XP machine.
After the recent security update, our 10.5.2 Macs will no longer print to the RIP. It will not accept the authentication. All other Macs still print fine.
This authentication process is a joke on 10.5 and it or smb has obviously been broken by the latest update.
Has anyone figured out anything to get around this issue?
Others with the same problem make sure you let Apple know that they need to fix this and it is not the printer manufacturers problem.

  • My Macs cannot print two sides if using borther HL5370DW series

My Mac Desktop and Mac Laptop cannot print two sides of one paper when I use brother HL 5370DW.  It started from last week.  My PC cannot print two-sided paper by brother HL5370 DW, and my Mac can print two-sided paper if I use the HP printer on Mac.  I highly suspect the problem is from the updates of Mac.  Do you have the same or similar problem these days?
I have tried to re-install the brother printer driver, and it did not work.
    Thank you!

Have a read of this post. These Brother owners found the same issue after a recent driver update and managed to resolve the problem.
