Mac to Mac Library transfer?

Alright, when I switched from PC to Mac, I was able to transfer the iTunes Library.itl file to my old G3 iBook (10.3.9), and was able to retain all of my play counts. The actual music files are on an external drive. I just got a new MacBook. I attempted to transfer the .itl file again, but it gives an error message sayign that the .itl file does not appear to be a valid exported file. I transferred the library.xml file from the ibook, and all but 240 of my songs appeared along with my playlists, but all of my play counts and ratings were gone.
I guess the condensed version of the above is what is the easiest way to transfer my library and retain the play counts given that all of my music files are on an external drive?

Do you have enough room on the boot drive to consolidate everything onto that from the 2nd drive?
Oh wait, is the second drive also an internal drive or an external drive?
Anyway, if you can consolidate to the boot drive. Then you can copy the entire iTunes folder to the external then plug into the new mac, copy it again onto the new Mac then open it directly from iTunes...
How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one

  • USING MAC MINI, IPHOTO PICTURES TRANSFER TO EXTERNAL HD

im using mac mini, how to transfer iphoto pictures to external hard drive?

    Close iPhoto.
Use finder to copy your iPhoto Library to your external drive.
Hold down the option key while you start up iPhoto.
IPhoto will ask you to select a photo library.  Point it to your library on the external drive.
Once you verify everything is working properly you can delete the iPhoto library from you internal drive if desired.

  • Scanner is my only casualty after Mac to Mac transfer

    Hello,
Having just upgraded my iMac, and carried out the Mac to Mac transfer (such a breeze), my only casualty is my scanner. Epson brand.
On launch from the dock, following error message is encountered:
"The application "Epson Scan" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "<EPSON Scan><EPSON Scan><TWAIN Source Manager.Shlb>"
I've downloaded and installed the drivers over again, but gut feel this is adding to the problem.
Anyone prepared to offer an idiot guide quick fix?
    Thanks in advance
    Best regards
    Tim

You need to completely remove all the Epson scanning software; please see this page
    http://kb.epson-europe.com/al/12/2/article.aspx?aid=1973&bt=4
Once done you should be able to download and install the latest software and get it to work. I had exactly the same issue asa you describe when I upgraded to Snow Leopard; after following this procedure it now works fine.

  • Transfer from mac to mac

I have bought a new MacBook and was transferring everything from my old Mac. I had decided to on my new Mac to have more ram and less Hard drive as I am storing on external and in the cloud. When I used Migration assitant it told me there was not enough disk space. I now have an isssue where Itunes is not showing itself on my new Mac as it does on my old. It tells my my new mac is not authorised. I do I authorise it and how can I transfer files?
Thank you hope thats not to confusing
    Regards

iTunes Store: Authorize or deauthorize your Mac or PC - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1420 - and another helpful post: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17828050
iTunes application window (not Finder or a browser) > menus at top >  Store menu > drag down to Authorize This Computer. (In earlier versions of iTunes access this option from the Advanced menu).
Image of where this is in iTunes 11: https://discussions.apple.com/message/20585561
Typically you use Migration Assistant to move items from an old computer to a new one.
OS X: How to migrate data from another Mac using Mavericks - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5872
If the new computer has too little space you may beed to do selective moving.  I have never use MA so I don't know if there is a selective mode.  Alternatively, hrere's how to move an iTunes library.  However, since an iTunes library is often what takes up a lot of space you may have to be even more selective.
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.
For the record there's this reference for iTunes 11 but it really doesn't strike me as having the specifics you need. iTunes 11 for Mac: Move your library to another computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12168
Windows users see tip at: https://discussions.apple.com/message/18879381
If you put it in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)

  • Possible mac to pc mp3 transfer?

Hi, I own an iMac. I have a very large CD/mp3 collection (about 35 gigs worth last count in iTunes). I am wanting to get a cheap PC laptop I can bring to work (we use PCs there). Is there any way to transfer my mp3s from my Mac to my new PC laptop? I've tried buying an external hardrive but it didn't work on my brother's PC laptop (an HP). I also tried using my Ipod as a disk drive by the PC woudn't recognize that either. I even tried burning a data disc with some mp3s and TV shows I downloaded from Itunes but on the PC they were choppy and didn't play right. Any suggestions?

One suggestion is to reformat your iPod as Windows format. You will have to plug it into a Windows machine running iTunes there and restore it on that computer. This will erase the entire iPod and reformat as windows format.
Then put it back on your Mac. Macs can read and write to Windows formatted iPods (but Windows can not read Mac formatted iPods). Resync your library to the now Windows formatted iPod. Now you are back to where you were when you started except the iPod is Windows formatted.
Now all you have to do is on the Mac, check the box to switch the iPod to Manually Manage mode, hit APPLY, say yes to the pop up and it will be switched to manual manage. Eject it and take it to work with you. All you need now is a computer running iTunes. If needed, install iTunes on a computer. Now plug the iPod into that computer. In iTunes you can now access the iPod directly and play anything directly off the iPod (via the iTunes interface). There you go.
When you get home, you can switch the iPod back to Auto update mode to sync back play counts, ratings, etc. and to apply any updates you made to your library. Just switch it back to manual mode before you go to work.
I do this all the time. My windows formatted iPod is synced to my eMac library but I often play it at work where I have installed iTunes on my computer and just have an empty library. I can play directly off my iPod and music files don't clog up my work computer.
    Good luck!

My iTunes library will no longer sync to my iPhone or iPad, nor will it play from my Mac. My Library is on my external HD. iTunes is correctly looking to the HD as its library. Please help...

Guys, I found another user and what he said to do worked!!! I have copied the information below:
This was 1 of the things that happend to me too, the other one was that at the bottom of the itunes page were it says all the memory info, it marked that I had over 3gb of other memory wich I didn't.
Anyways what I did was to unmark the calendar, contacts etc. ( so that they wont sync with the computer ), pressed apply,  then I marked all of them again, apply again and for last I pressed Sync wich is at the bottom right coner by the apply botton.
I'm not sure that had anything to do with it but it worked, my music appeard both of my itunes playlists and the ones I bought in itunes.  Also the other memory dissapeard and it's all good.
I'm not sure this will help you but thats my 5 cents, if the problem continues its better to call customer service and ask for a technician.
Hope your problem gets solved. Have a nice day.

  • Can I use my Mac OS iTunes Library with Windows XP under Boot Camp?

Hello. I have a Mac Pro with two drives, a 1TB Mac OS 10.5 drive and a 500GB Windows XP drive. I have a large iTunes library on my Mac OS drive, and I'd like to be able to access it when I'm using XP. I downloaded MacDrive hoping that I'd be able to use the same iTunes library, but I'm stuck as to what to do now. Anyone know if this is possible, and how I can get it to work?

I have my entire iTunes library shared between Mac OS X 10.5.2 and XP (aka. Media Center 2005).
I use an HFS+ volume accessed via MacDrive. In my case I started off with the Windows iTunes as the master (and use it to rip all my CDs). I then set the Mac side running iTunes to use the same iTunes folder as specified in Windows (this is done in Advanced Preferences). I also replaced the Mac "iTunes Music Library.xml" and "iTunes Library" file (both stored in /Users/username/Music/iTunes) with aliases pointing to "C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\Music\iTunes\iTunes Music Library.xml" and "C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl" respectively.
Note: I suspect the Mac side will need write access to these two files, and as I used FAT32 for the Windows volume the Mac does have write access. However there are now at least two ways for the Mac to get write access to NTFS volumes (MacFuse being one). It may also be possible to tell iTunes to store these files themselves in a common location (not tried that).
While it is not relevant to your query, I have also managed to share my entire iTunes library with Windows Media Player (and therefore also to Media Center 2005). All my music is in Apple Lossless format and I have a directshow filter for WMP to let it play Apple Lossless (or unprotected AAC). I also have a plugin installed to let WMP read the meta tags in MPEG4 (i.e. AAC and Apple Lossless) files.
When I switch from Windows to Mac and run iTunes it does a brief rebuild, when I switch from Mac to Windows it again does a brief rebuild and the result is that the list of music in iTunes on both operating systems is always the same and successfully accesses the same music files on the shared volume. I rebooted back in to Mac OS X at the weekend and was happily accessing the music in Front Row.

  • I reformatted from lion back to snow leopard how do i get my music back i have it on my iphone and when i sync up i still do not have my music on my mac how do i transfer it back to my mac

i reformatted my mac pro from lion back to snow leopard how do i get my music back. i have it on my iphone and when i sync up i still do not have my music on my mac how do i transfer it back to my mac.

Wow, you didn't make a backup of your files first?
You shoudl have come here first for help before doing that.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16276201#16276201
All I can say is make sure you have the same account name on the computer like before, even if you have to create a new user under System Preferences>accounts, then log into your itunes account with that and try to reverse sync from the iPhone like you would normally.
Apple doesn't expect one to go backwards, so they are not all that friendly, you may have to ask around on MacRumors for third party software that can reverse sync from iOS devices.
    Good luck

You don't need to delete anything from your phone or you old computer.
Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from old computer or backup to /Music/ on new computer.
If you cannot use the old computer or don't have a backup...
-> Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device
Then immediately make a backup of your new computer.
Get an external drive and plug it in and use -> Time Machine

  • New Mac, old Virtual PC, transfer XP with Parallels?

Hi folks, I'm planning on getting an new Intel Mac and using the transfer option to upgrade from my G5 to get my identity on the new system. (What's that called anyway?) Here's the situation. I have Virtual PC and Windows XP on the current system. I don't want the virtual PC disk to transfer, or if it does, I want to delete it. I was told that if you install Parallels, it has an import option to allow you to transfer the old XP over. I assume you can do that with an ethernet connection to the old system?
Just need help in figuring out the steps...
    thanks
    Jeff

I assume you can do that with an ethernet connection to the old system?
As long as the virtual image is seen by the Parallels converter it probably doesn't matter how you do it.

Probably want to then post on the Parallels forums:

  • Is there a place in my CS6 that will show the key so I can have Mac do a data transfer?

My college provided all design graduates with a Macbook with CS6 Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Bridge, Extension manager, and Flash installed and registered with the key to Adobe. My laptop that they gave has gone bad and is being replaced this weekend by myself since my school won't fix it(per their contract they are required to so I plan to go after them for this but int he meantime) The school never provided us with the license key for this CS6, they did the install themselves, is there a place in my programs on my laptop that I can go to in order to get this key so I can have Mac do a data transfer?

    Thanks, thats  a good resource. However, it doesn't help in my situation, I didn't [urchase this or install it directly thru Adobe, as stated my college, College america(famous for their promotion that if you go to school with them and graduate you get a free laptop with all of CS6 included) this means they installed it as a mass install on all Design students laptops. They originally gave us CS5 then sent us a link to a site for upgrading to CS6, the email said this from the college;
Great News Regarding the Upgrade to CS6:
As it has been announced in your Design courses the free upgrade to CS6 is now available for all active Graphic Arts and Web Design students.
To get the upgrade please follow these 3 simple steps:
1-     Copy and paste this link to your web browser:  getmyisos.myvalcom.net
2-     Select the download for your specific computer (Mac or HP)
It will take a long time to download, make sure you reset your “sleep” timer on your computer so it does not doze off during the download process.  When it is complete…
When downloading the upgrade it (I guess, just speculating here) had the license bult in because it was never displayed it just downloaded and
i have used it ever since. I of course tried contacting the school for this but when you graduate from them, and are no longer a potential student they can suck up to sell you on their courses, they stop responding and being nice.
Does anyone have any other ideas? Is there a spot in the programs where if I open preferences in my Mac book or if I open he programs I can click something that displays the license in my laptop?
    Thanks
