  • Networking x2 G5's, x1 Mac Mini & x1 G4 - HELP!!!

    Hi Everyone,
I've come across a little problem whilst trying to network up my macs. Ok this is what I basically want to do...I want to use the Mac Mini as a 'server' and the rest of my macs as seperate design machines. This is how I want to do it...
    G5 PowerMac (OS X 10.4) >
    G5 PowerMac (OS X 10.4) > Mac Mini (OS X 10.4) | SERVER |
    G4 PowerMac (OS9) >
I've been trying to connect them but all I can access is 'drop boxes' which isn't what I require - I need to be able to see the desktop etc. Does anyone know how I can do this?
    Thanks,
    Mark

    aagh!
I know where you're coming from. Can be a bit frustrating when things do not go as one would expect.
    Let me suggest an idea.
Let's turn off each computer's Personal File Sharing service.
Then shut down all the machines.
Then pick two machines to boot up. One will be the client the other will be the server. Turn on Personal File Sharing in those two machines. And let's get two machines to network successfully.
Remember, when you open a Finder window and click on the Network icon you are acting as a client looking for a server. I say that just to impress what we are doing with the computer when we are doing this process. I'm an audio guy and in audio it's all about signal flow but it's not so far different with this process. It's a workflow thing. Establish certain positives and then move on and expand.
If you are successful with the two computers then I would boot up the third computer, turn on its Personal File Sharing and try to network with the same server with which the original client computer is networking.
Building your network one computer at a time.
As for, the not mounting the Desktop issue; what I see happening on my machines is this; when I connect to my other machine I get the password dialog box, succeeding that I am offered the volumes available to mount. My computer displays the Macintosh HD for the serving computer and the user volume, in my case, michaelpannone.
I'll select my user volume, michaelpannone. That establishes itself in my client computer Finder Pane with a purple orb as its icon. I click on it and in the next column I am presented with a list of all the folders contained in that volume.
All of the folders are available to me. Now I just went into the Documents folder on the server computer, right clicked on the folder, clicked Get Info, and changed the owners permissions to No Access. When I try to open the folder on either computer I am presented with the dialog, -The folder "Documents" could not be opened because you do not have sufficient access privileges.-
Be sure all your permissions are Read and Write in those folders you want to access. Be sure you are the Owner in all the folders you want to access. I just looked in the Owner sub menu and I was surprised to see the many objects that could be set there. Double check this stuff.
And again do this interrogation one machine at a time and build your network one machine at a time. I hope you make some progress on this because these Macs seem to network quite easily. There has to be some config that just is not exactly as it should be. Good luck my friend.

There is something incompatible would be my guess. Did you disconnect all your peripherals in safe mode just to check?
You might now create a new temporary user account. Log into the new account. Do the panics still occur?
I would also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics. Sometimes they can be difficult to track down. Looking at each new panic log would help determine if it's cause is associated with the same extensions.

  • Using a Mac on windows network with a proxy server

Hi I’m very new to Macs to apologies if this is a really silly question. I’m
trying to setup a Mac on our network and I’m having an issue getting it to work
properly with our proxy server. I have connected the Mac to the network and
selected automatic proxy configuration in the network settings using the URL of
our Pac file. I am asked for a proxy username and password when I initially try and
access a website but once I have entered my credentials they are saved in
keychain and anyone coming after me can browse using my account. I work in a
hospital so there are many different people accessing different devices. We
monitor and trace all users internet browsing so my question is can I configure
the Mac to ask for proxy credentials for different users? On our windows devices
a login box will appear if the browser has been closed and reopened. Can I do
    this with the Mac?????
Any help you can offer will be very much appreciated.
    Thanks

The short answer is that the IT department is a strict Microsoft shop and also incompetent. Almost everything in that message is patently false. Unfortunately, when accessing Microsoft Server services like this, you will need the support of the IT staff to tell you various settings to use. I think it is pretty clear that they have no intention of doing that.
There is nothing "special" about bootcamp. It is just a boot loader. A Mac running Windows via bootcamp is a Windows PC, not a Mac. As such, it will work perfectly fine in the network. You could also try running Parallels. I believe Parallels can be configured to use a bootcamp partition so you could run Windows via either bootcamp or Parallels.
One of the few things that is correct is that Apple does have to provide driver support for bootcamp and there is the possibility of random incompatibilities - but no more so than any other PC manufacturer. Parallels/VMWare may work around that with a different set of incompatibilities. Don't be too worried about this part. These "incompatibilities" are minor and almost always with funky hardware devices. What you want to do should work perfectly with either Parallels/VMWare or Bootcamp.

  • Kernel panic on 2010 Mac Book Pro - please help

    Hey Guys
Bit unsure about what to do ……
In december my computer randomly went to a grey screen and told me it needed restarting, never ever had this happen before …..
I restarted and got a report as to why it was happening .
Never thought anything else about it until it happened a day or 2 later, since then this happens every couple of days and sometimes more regularly, at first it was only happening while I was using safari….. so assumed a bug and kept emailing reports to apple …. However more recently it has happened whilst trying to play a DVD, and whilst trying to access a folder….
My computer is less than a yr old but I don't have apple tech support anymore so to phone them will cost , I don't even know how much they charge. ???
I use my laptop a lot to edit video for clients and do NOT what this happening in the middle of an edit … =( Also if I have to send my computer away this is going to disrupt me a lot.
Ive read a couple of other posts about kernel panics ... and have done a RAM test and a apple hardware test, all which come back ok, I also did a disk verify, which came back at first with errors, but they were fixed and now all seems ok ....
Ive also done all software updates and yet still it happens ...
Tbh Ive found this laptop to be very slow on certain things since I have had it, esp when launching finder …. or the dashboard, it take forever to fill in the information and finder takes ages to fill in the mb in each folder etc or to load the app icons .... and often crashes particulary in the app folder, had assumed it a osx bug ... but now not so sure ... Also often get the rainbow beach ball coming up on simple tasks such as clicking save in a application etc for a few seconds ....
can anyone suggest anything ? ? or what i should do, i dont want this happening in the middle of working on a video project etc .
Can anyone read or understand the panic reports ? ?

Here is some information that will answer your Kernel Panic questions for every level of interest.
    (1) Start here for help understanding and resolving kernel panics: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
Don't be concerned that OS X 10.6 is not specifically mentioned. This info also applies to SL Macs.

    In-depth KP info: http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/technotes/tn2002/tn2063.html
    (2) Panics are often (but not always) hardware related, so disconnect unnecessary peripherals, check any RAM or hardware you have added, and try the suggestions in the links above one-by-one until you find the one that fixes your problem. If your trouble persist, or if your time is critical, you might want to ask your Apple Service Technician to work the problem for you.

  • Macs on the network say they "print" but nothing is actually printed

I have a Canon MF4350 connected via USB. It works as a local printer. Other Macs on the network can see it as a shared printer, and when you print it looks like printing work. But nothing is printed.
Canon cannot help, Apple cannot help.
Downloading the latest drivers from Canon just make the printer not work at all.
Tried everything I can think of and done a few things people recommend here - nothing works.

A previous postee who had the same issue and need to connect to the shared printer found that if the Mac that was connecting to the share did not have the UFRII driver installed locally, he was able to connect and print. The driver will be located in HD > Library > Printers > Canon > UFR2. Delete this UFR2 folder and contents and empty the Trash. Then also trash the UFRII Backgrounder plist file, located in HD > Library > Launch Agents and is called jp.co.canon.UFR2.BG.plist, and then restart the Mac. Now if you try connecting to the share, are you able to print?

  • Why does my mac keep crashing? HELP

    Hello Community,
I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro Intel i7 (OSX 10.10.2). When I first purchased the computer there was a problem with the logic board (when switching from intel graphics to NVIDIA...so when something graphic intensive was being used). Apple of course replaced the logic board and didn't have any issues. Well I believe the problem is back. When I run iMovie it crashes and I just tried to use App Zapper and that actually caused it to crash. I have posted the message I got when my mac rebooted. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated (going to Genius bar tomorrow).
    Thank you

You have the MacBookPro6,2—the Edsel of Macs. It may have the logic-board defect that was covered by a recall program that has now ended.
Residents of the EU may be entitled to warranty service for up to six years after purchase.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers do not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue that Apple calls "VST" (for "Video Switching Test.") Ask for it. A "Failed" result means that the fault is present.
You may be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a "depot repair," which involves shipping the unit to a central repair facility and takes about two weeks. For that flat fee, anything found wrong with it should be fixed, not just the logic board.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility. If you decide to pay for a new logic board, test thoroughly during the 90-day warranty period on the repair. Some owners have reported that they went through as many as three replacement boards before getting one that worked.
If you don't want to pay for the repair, you may (or may not) be able to work around the problem by disabling automatic graphics switching. To use the discrete graphics processor, you'll need a third-party utility to switch to it manually.
Often the problems start after an OS upgrade. If the upgrade was recent, and you have backups, then you can revert to a previous OS X version.

  • Can't see the other Mac on the network

I have a iMac G5 and a MacBook Pro connected via wirelss at home. Sometimes I can't see the other Mac in the Network folder, however I can connect to the other Mac (even I can't see them in the network folder) by afp the IP address via Safari... I have enabled the "personal file sharing" option in both of the machine.
    Help please.
    Samuel

    Sam,
I've had the same problems numerous times myself: the other Macs don't show in the network folder. Why? I'm not too sure myself, I've been given several possible explanations by the geniouses in San Francisco. However, the best trick to connect is via the Finder 'Go to' menu. The very last item should say something like "Connect to server..." -which is the same as the 'Command-K' combination of keys. That'll bring up a list of the last few servers on the network, and al you have to do is choose the one you want, and voilà!

  • Accessing Firewire Drives on a Mac from a Networked PC

    Hello everyone!
I recently set up a network consisting of my mac and a pc. It works fine, but I am trying to access files on my mac external hard drives from the PC.
On a PC this would be easy enough to do, namely just right click and press share this folder. When I called apple support, they said there is no built in OSX way of doing something like this. He suggested that someone on the boards might know a trick or a 3rd party utility to make this work.
So I was wondering... Is there any way to access external hard drives on a mac from a networked pc in any way? Help is much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

  • Can't access new MBP from other Macs on my network

I just got a new last-gen MBP running Leopard. All Apple updates are installed. I need to access it from two Macs on my network that are running Tiger (also with all current updates installed). Tiger-to-Tiger connections are running perfectly. And the new Mac accesses the Internet, networked printers and so on just fine.
Problem: While the MBP shows up in the other machines' Network Browser, they can't connect to it. And, while the MBP sees the other machines, all it can connect to is the account Public Folders (the entire volumes are set to share).
The new MBP was populated with data from my old PB G4 using Migration Assistant.
I've never had a problem like this. I've tried disabling the MBP Firewall, rebooting the network, rebooting all of my Macs, but still no luck.
I've searched the Discussions and didn't find any help in previous postings. Hopefully someone can help me now...
    Thank you!

I can connect to any of the Tiger machines from the Leopard machine.
And the Leopard machine shows in each Tiger machine's network browser.
I've rebooted all of the machines at least once and rebooted my router and switch as well.
I've tried connecting to the Leopard machine by specifying its afp address.
None of this works. I guess I'll need to take advantage of my free 90 days of tech support and call Apple. In 20 years of owning Macs, I've never encountered anything like this. I still hope I don't need to reinstall the OS, but I'm getting very worried.
Thanks for all the suggestions; I'll keep checking back and will also post the solution if one is found.
I do not think it's an OS issue. At least one requiring a reinstall.
I just started my other MBP with Tiger. Takes a bit since it's booting via a FW400 pipe.
I will see if I can access this MBP from that one in a few minutes. Never did that - all my systems have been peers. (Booted faster than I expected.)
First I note that this Leopard box does not show up on the Tiger box.
Also "go" and browse does not show this box.
It worked but I had to enter this IP into the "connect to" on Tiger.
    Required login and password.
Connected via afp and a window popped up with the volumes on this box to connect to.
Clicked this user account and there I was.
After that, this box showed up in the Finder sidebar.
So Tiger will connect to a Leopard box, but it seems that one needs to enter the IP of the Leopard box. If that does not work, then something is wrong.
Curiously, that Tiger box has not registered on this Leopard under Places.
Ah, I did not have filesharing on in the Tiger box. Turned it on and I can see it from here.
So I have bilateral network connections: Leopard here <-> Tiger there
Works for me, but that does not help you except to know that it should work.
BTW The Tiger version is 10.4.11.

  • Can't connect Mac to Windows network drive

I am the only Mac in a PC college. I frequently have to connect to shared folders on the PC network. For six months I could "connect to server... cifs://name" with no problems. Last month, this suddenly stopped working (error = server may not exist). My office IT people told me to switch to smb://name and it worked again for at least a day. Now I can't get it to connect at all. The finder can see the PC server in the shared pane, but it won't connect to it. "Connect to server" won't connect either, no matter how I try. I get the "server may not exist" error, the "volume won't mount" error, or the "not all data is readable" error. The local IT people say they haven't changed anything and all the Windows people are fine. As the lone Mac user, I don't think much help is forthcoming from IT here. I don't know much about this sort of thing, so any suggestions would be most appreciated.
I do not know if the problem coincides with the update to 10.5.6 or not.

    Karen –
Unfortunately I think that 10.5.6 broke several aspects of MS Windows support. If you were to GOOGLE ‘can’t connect to windows shares with os x 10.5.6’ you will find plenty. I personally have not upgraded to 10.5.6 because of it. Though not the best method you may want to consider using the IP address of the system you are connecting to.
    smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/<share name>
Obviously I know that this is easier than said especially if you are the only Mac on the network, I am sure the College IT group is just going to fall on their swords to help you with this or even providing you this information. With that said you may be able to get the IP by trying to ‘PING’ the server’s name. To do this open a Terminal session on your Mac and type the following at the prompt:
    ping <server name>
You should get a something like this:
    PING <server name> (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx): 56 data bytes
Now let me caution you, I am sure that the college has turned of PING reply on their network you will most likely get the line above and that is it. Also depending how aggressively they monitor their network for such activities you may show up on some report. Given that I would suggest that if possible you find someone in the IT group that is somewhat sympathetic to your problem and let them know what you are attempting to do.
Not the best answer but I know that using the IP instead of the server name seems to work.
    Best of luck.

  • How do I share a folder on mac mini with other macs in the network?

    Howdy all!
The scenario I have in mind is that I have one folder in our Mac Mini (used as Home Theater) with all the family's music files on it. The rest of the family would be able to access the folder and copy the music they prefer onto their own computers (iMacs and Macbooks). The other computers would have read only access, they would not be able to alter the contents of the original file (to prevent accidental deletion). Only the user of the Mini Home Theater could alter the contents of said file.
I have tried pulling up the "Get Info" window and clicking the "Shared Folder" and "Locked" boxes, but all this seems to do is make the user of the Mac Mini unable to alter the contents of the folder. All the other macs on the network can access and alter the folder contents no problem.
    What am I missing?
Thank you for any advice you can give!

This isn't quite what I was looking for. I don't want to share the folder with users on the same computer--I want to share the folder with users on other computers.
Unless there is some way to identify users on other computers. How can I do that?
