Mac-to-PC, PC-to-Mac, Modem-to-Modem

Hi,
I have a Performa 6400/180 that i use frequently, along with a PC for more advanced tasks. I would like to be able to download files on my PC (because its much faster) then transfer them to my Mac, and vice-versa. I was wondering if there was a way to connect the two directly via modems. Both computers have built in modems. Any ideas?
-Gil

If you plan to continue using the 6400 for a while, I'd suggest installing a USB 1.1 PCI card in one of the (2) PCI slots. You have to install a USB 1.1 card and not a USB 2.0 card. While USB 2.0 cards are typically backward-compatible to the slower data transfers of USB 1.1 on pre-OS 10.2.8 Macs, the Performa/Power Mac 6360, 5400, 6400, 5500, and 6500 models can't use USB 2.0 cards because they're multi-bus cards. Each port on a USB 2.0 card is on a separate bus, but these multiple-bus USB 2.0 cards confuse the PCI controller in the Macs that I've listed. Either OS 8.6 or 9.1 has support for USB devices, although the USB support files included with OS 9.1 (available in the OS 9.1 Update) can be used with OS 8.6 for greater compatibility. If you don't already have one, you could check eBay for a used USB 1.1 card. Once it's installed and the USB support drivers are loaded, you can use flash memory drives to quickly transfer files between the 6400 and your PC, because the 6400 can read/write to PC-formatted flash drives.

  • Modem 300 compatibility with Mac Plus

I have an Apple Modem 300 that I use with my Apple //c.  It connects to the Internet (in some ways) just fine.  I have a Mac Plus 4MB and I was wondering if the Modem 300 specifically could be compatible with the modem.  If so, also please tell me how I can.  I already have Netscape installed on my Mac Plus.

For the cable connection, the following article could perhaps be of interest.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA33629
However, the modem speed is extremely low. It would of course be much better to use a faster modem (something like 14400 bps). Almost any PC-style (DB-25F port) modem can be used with a Macintosh Plus through a Mac modem cable (DB-25M to MiniDIN-8M).
I did not know that it was possible to use a Netscape web browser on a Macintosh Plus (with an external hard drive) computer. There are a few alternatives that work, such as MacWeb (under System 7). An old version of Eudora can (if SMTP authentication is not required) be used for email. You would also need MacTCP and an appropriate PPP program. For details, see the web pages below.

  • Files from Mac Classic/Perfoma 5215

    Hey all-
I have two old macintosh computers that I would like to copy the files from (To another computer) before wiping the hard drives. We have a Macintosh Classic running OS 6 and a Performa 5215 running 8.6. I have been reading a couple past posts regarding transferring files from old macs and have come up with a couple possible solitions. If you think they are feasible please let me know.
    1. Use a direct connection between the classic and performa using a 8-pin apple connect cable (incorrect name for the cable, it was used to connect the computers to a printer). I have read about this being used, however, I am not sure how to accomplish this. I do have this cable
    2. Use the modem on the 5215 and instructions here (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=22229) to perform a direct modem to modem transfer of all the files I need to another modern computer.
The problem I think I will face is I don't have a modern Mac to work with. I switched to PC's in early 2000 because that is what work gave me. Unfortunately my macs languished. Would this modem to modem connection work with a modern PC running Windows XP Pro? Or would I have to look for additional options?
Auxiliary parts that I have for the macs:
Basically all I ever had was an external modem for the Performa and a couple printers. I don't have any ethernet stuff or apple talk stuff. I'm sorry if I have left out something thing you would need to help diagnose my problem. If you need further specs or inventory of parts I have, please let me know. Thanks for any help!

Yes, you can connect the Macintosh Classic's printer port to the printer port of the Performa 5215 by means of a Mac printer cable. AppleTalk has to be on on both Macs. You would enable File Sharing on the Performa and then connect to that computer from the Classic (via the Chooser). The fact that you are running System 6 on the Classic may or may not lead to compatibility issues. If there is a problem, (with enough RAM) you could boot the Classic to System 7.5 using a Network Access floppy (download here) and connect from there instead.
The KB article # 22229 was written for a Mac-to-Mac transfer. The principle would be the same for a direct/local modem-to-modem Mac-to-PC transfer. An appropriate terminal emulation application with file transfer capabilities (e.g. HyperTerminal) will have to be used on the PC. Please note that two randomly chosen modems may have difficulties negotiating when connected locally. A simple home-built line simulator can help.
Alternatively, with two phone lines, you could connect via the public telephone network (no line simulator in that case).
Another alternative (if the PC has a serial port) would be to plug a Mac modem cable (MiniDIN-8M to DB-25M) into the modem port of the Performa. Connect the other end to a (DB-25F to DB-9F) PC null-modem cable, which goes to the PC.
Finally, there is always the possibility of using 1.44 MB floppies for any transfers (copy to PC-formatted disks on the Performa 5215).

  • Wake another mac over airport

is it possible to wake a sleeping mac over airport to enable file sharing etc, possibly with 'remote desktop' which ive just started using, [without much success so far to be honest]. i've heard it isnt possible, only with a wired ethernet connection. It would be so useful and convenient if it was possible to both wake and sleep my other mac via my laptop over airport.
in the systems prefs, under energy saver theres an option to 'wake when the modem detects a ring'.what does this mean, and could this be used as a workaround to wake the other mac remotely? how do i call the macs modem anyway?

Sorry but that is not possible.

  • Need a dial up modem for G3 Beige Tower

I have an ethernet card for my G3 Beige Tower but I need a dial up modem so I can hook it up for my mom. Anyone know where I can get one? Milwaukee

The internal 56K Apple/GV modem card that was a Build-to-Order option for the beige G3s offers the convenience of no additional desktop clutter, no extra power supply to bother with, and nothing to turn ON/OFF. It plugs into the brown slot on the audio or A/V personality card. You can see one listed on this page, but the $99.77 price tag is absurd, in spite of its scarcity now. When I stopped buying them a few years ago, used ones could be purchased for about $35. The internal 56K modem card functioned identically as its external Global Village 56K counterpart. If you have the time to keep checking eBay, you may find an internal Apple/GV 56K card eventually show up for auction. Just be sure that it matches the photo shown on the page I linked. Some sellers (mistakenly or not) identify the software-based "Apple GeoPort" modem card as the 56K modem card - which it definitely isn't. For a reliable 56K external modem, the US Robotics 56K v.90/x2 (model 5689-03) was always my choice for the internet and downloads. The Global Village TelePort 56K v.90 external modems with attached modem cable are also a good choice for the beige G3s. These modems are discontinued, but you can find them showing up at eBay or thrift stores. The current US Robotics v.92 external modem (black color and marketed for PCs) can be used with your beige, but (as Jan wrote) you'll need to find a Mac modem cable (DB-25 to mini-DIN8) for it. Additionally, a custom INIT string must be used to disable a couple of unsupported v.92 features, in order for it to function properly. After much trial and error, I arrived at one that did the trick.

  • Cannot get internet to work over a mobile modem!

Hello. I'd like to use my Samsung A401 Telstra Mobile for wireless internet access when I'm away with my iBook. I so far have tested my phone working with the Samsung drivers on Windows XP, with built in UTMS/GPRS support on Ubuntu x86 and recently Ubuntu PPC on a friends IBook G4.
But I can't get the connection to work with OSX 10.4.11 on my iBook!
I also had a chance to test Mac OSX 10.5 PPC on my friends iBook G4. 10.5 knows about GPRS modems but it was no better than my 10.4. It still didn't work. Acted exactly the same.
What happens is that OSX gets the IP addresses but no internet! It's totally bizarre to be connected online but still have no internet! :-?
When I plug the mobile in through a USB data cable it detects it as a USB modem so no driver problems there. I did some net research and found some 3G Mac modem scripts on Ross Barkman's site and also came across a Samsung t509 Tmo script somewhere else. I am using the Generic 3G script.
As an example here are the IP addresses I get. From console PPP log:
    Thu May 20 17:45:04 2010 : ipcp: up
    Thu May 20 17:45:04 2010 : local IP address 10.222.32.153
    Thu May 20 17:45:04 2010 : remote IP address 10.222.32.0
    Thu May 20 17:45:04 2010 : primary DNS address 139.130.4.4
    Thu May 20 17:45:04 2010 : secondary DNS address 203.50.2.71
    From ifconfig:
    ppp0: flags=8051<UP,POINTOPOINT,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
    inet 10.222.32.153 --> 10.222.32.0 netmask 0xff000000
If I didn't know any better I'd say the mobile had given me an IP address from it's DHCP server and forgot to "NAT" it to the outside world. As you can see they are strange and in the old 10.x.x.x local range.
However they are correct as that's just the sort of IP addresses Windows and Ubuntu reported. But what are they doing that OSX is not? This has really been driving me nuts! I know mobile modems can work in OSX!
If I try to ping any of the IP addresses they are all dead. Even the local IP allocated one. I also notice in the Connect window that OSX is sending data out but not receiving any in. OTOH on OSX 10.5 I did see some data come back at the start. But still the outside world could not be reached.
Has anyone got any clues? I really want to use OSX for mobile internet. I'd rather not be forced to install Linux on my iBook just to get internet working! :-o

    BDAqua wrote:
I'm at a bit of a disadvantage, never even having touched a Cell Phone yet!
Really! Not even an iPhone? :-o
In Network prefs, along with the strange IP, does it have a reasonable IP for the Server also?
It doesn't IMHO. The local IP is okay but this is a strange pair:
    10.172.190.107
    10.172.190.0
The netmask making it even stranger:
    255.0.0.0
    It's whacked!
Did you use Internet Connect to setup the Dialing & Login?
Actually no, well not exactly. I used the Network pane to set up the connection. Then told that to dial which brought up Connect for me that does the dialling.
The dialling in is strange, as it's based on the fake number *99# which makes the connection to the mobile broadband, and then uses PPP over the serial link (USB in my case) for the TCP/IP link up. My user and pass remain blank but I need to specify my APN (Access Point Name) in the number string. This seems to be a pseudo-standard among mobile/GPRS/UTMS modem scripts.
Having a blank user and pass makes it hard to set it up using the Assistant.
Does having Console open when trying to get a URL show any clues?
I can't see anything that stands out. It all seems to go well. But I did notice lately that the Mac recorded sending IP data. Didn't see that logged before. But I was playing with the PPP settings and seeing if manual worked. BTW why can't I specify netmask and router in manual PPP setting? I did have to pull my phone out to disconnect since it ignores the hang up command and my Mac complains about a removed USB device.
On that note, have a log:

  • Need better external dialup modem

I have a software called Meditech by Cambridge Computer Corporation that allows me to connect to my hospital computer system via a dialup modem. The Mac version of this software does not appear to work with the newer Mac modems, either the one built into my G5 iMac or the Apple external USB modem I bought for my new Macbook. When the software dials in, I get the tradition modem sound but then it hangs on the whirlybird type sound and nothing happens. Does anyone have a suggestion as to a different external modem that might work? I also have installed Parallels and tried to connect on the Windows side with the Windows version of this software but have been unable to make that happen either.

I have tried connecting at home via an Apple External Modem with my new Macbook, with the same whirlybird sound. So neither the built-in internal modem on my G5 iMac and the external Apple USB modem with my new Macbook are able to connect this software. I have a G3 iBook at home which is able to connect this software without any difficulty. That is why I figured the newer Apple modems may be different and problematic. I tried installing the Windows version of this Meditech software on the Windows side of my Parallels desktop, but cannot get the Apple external modem to show up. I bought an inexpensive Trendnet external USB modem and that didn't work either. I seem to recall that I spoke with Cambridge about this and they thought it might be a problem with the newer Apple modem. They are not highly motivated to fix the Mac side of this issue.

  • Can't connect to internet via dial up modem

I recently purchased a Mac Book Pro computer and while I can readily connect to the internet via my workplace Ethernet based LAN, I am having problems connecting to my ISP via the USB dial-up modem that I purchased with the system. The problem it seems is that my ISP (Bluelight internet @ www.mybluelight .com) doesn’t support the OS-X operating system and when I try to connect from the Windows XP side, the system doesn’t recognize the modem because there is no Windows driver for it. So it appears that I have 3 options available: 1) obtain a Windows compatible driver for the MAC modem (easiest): 2) buy a new modem that is both windows and OS-X compatible; or 3) change my ISP to one that supports OS-X. As I see things, the easiest way around this problem would be to get a windows compatible driver for the modem so that I can access the web from the XP side. Is there a Windows XP compatible driver available for the MAC USB port modem? If not does anybody have any other suggestions? Thank You

Try using a different USB port. Several people are having problems with the single port on the right.
I would not expect a compatability issue with your ISP. After all you only need a telephone number and usrid/password and the prtocols are standard.

  • Quicksilver modem: not working? not detected?

My new-to-me Quicksilver 2002 dual 1-Ghz CPU arrived yesterday and all's well. Running Leopard 5.3.
I live in the country, with only dialup available. The modem shows on "About this Mac" but there's no connecting, no modem squealing: nothing.
How do I determine if the modem is good? I'm using phone line that works on another computer. I've checked all the settings in preferences: all are set to known-good settings.
    TIA
    J

I'd opt for the Best Data USB modem. As for user reviews of the Apple USB modem, you'll find a lot of negative feedback (check the bottom of this page). I tried out the Best Data "Smart One" USB modem and was pleased with its operation, in that it compared favorably to the performance of my other external 56K Mac modems. For less than ½ the cost of the Best Data modem, I ended up using this USB-to-Serial adapter and connected one of my US Robotics 56K (onboard controller & DSP) modems to it. Of the several brands I owned/used, I always considered the US Robotics modems to be the best for dial-up service, especially large downloads. The external US Robotics 56K modem has a detachable cable, so instead of using its included Mac cable (DB-25 to mini DIN-8), I connected a PC modem cable (DB-25 to DB-9) to it, enabling connection to the USB adapter. After some trial and error with resetting a couple of the modem's DIP switches and modifying the modem script, it worked quite well and provided the same stable performance via USB, as it originally did when connected to my legacy Macs' modem ports. An external Mac modem having a permanently-attached cable with the round (mini DIN-8) plug for Mac serial ports won't work with these adapters. For ease of configuration, the Best Data USB modem will be plug-and-play. Compare prices for it, prior to purchasing one.

  • Modem drops when I log into mail (unless I wait 2 or 3 minutes)

    4-15-07
Problem seems to have started after Security Update
    2007-002 or 003.
If I turn on eMac, dialup the ISP via 56K modem, bring
up Mail 1.3.11 (v622/624) and delay from entering ISP
POP mail server account password (for about 2 or 3 minutes) there is no problem.
Only if I immediately enter the password without waiting
do I lockup the Mac (modem SIGHUP in connection log and
no keyboard or mouse activity). Power reboot needed.
Anyone have a thought? Have pretty much exhausted myself
    on this one.
    Thanks.

  • Unable to connect internal modem/authentication fails

I have iMAC OS X 10.3.9. I can't connect my internal modem. It worked perfectly with my new ISP until Saturday, 10-27-07. Now I get authentication failure notice. My password is typed in and has not changed. It will not accept my password. I have Vip Power/Dialup Ine. They have checked my account and find no fault. When troubleshooting internet PPP with iMAC specialist I was told to dial my ISP #, then hang up when it answered. This process never worked.

    Welcome To  Discussions threecherries!
No guarantees, but this configuration works for me on my iMac G3. You may need to make some adjustments for your particular Mac, Modem, and ISP.
Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with your service, so I am not able to advise you on how to reset your access numbers.
Hopefully you know how to do that.
Read the entire document. Pay attention to *Notes.
And if you have any questions, please ask them before preceeding.
Delete only the files listed, no more.
Sign off from your ISP, and quit the browser.
    See *Note 1
    Navigate to:
HD > USERS > YOUR HOME > LIBRARY > PREFERENCES
    If present, move to Trash:
    com.apple.internetpref.plist (a file)
    com.apple.internetconnect.plist (a file)
    com.apple.internetconfig.plist (a file)
Don't empty the Trash just yet.
*Note 1Before you change the settings below, you might want to make notes, or take screen shots of your present configurations. Actually, this should be done before you trash or move any of the files I've listed above.
Then, open System Preferences > Network
In each of these panels, after you have made your selections or changes, be sure to click on the "Apply Now" button in the lower right corner, if it's available.
    Location: Select "Automatic"
Show: Select "Internal Modem", or however you connect.
On the PPP screen, click "PPP Options". CHECK ONLY THESE options:
    "Send PPP echo packets"
    "Use TCP header compression"
    Click OK
On the TCP/IP screen, Configure using IPv4: Select "Using PPP"
On the Modem screen, Select your modem from the list. I'm using an iMac (Summer 2001), and I have "Apple Internal 56K Modem (v.90)" selected. Select your modem.
Check "Enable error correction and compression in modem"
"Wait for dial tone before dialing"
    "Dialing": Tone
    "Sound": On
"Show modem status in menubar" (This isn't really necessary, but it's handy.)
    Also select your Country.
    Then, still in "Network" preferences,
    Location: "Automatic"
    Show: "Network Port Configurations"
Make sure "Internal Modem", or however you connect, is checked and at the top of the list.
Click "Apply Now" at the bottom of the screen.
    Quit System Preferences.
If everything is hunky dory, you can empty the Trash.

  • Apple Internal Modem not accesible maybe not present?

Previously functioning internal modem used for faxing not visible as a choice in the print center. Under the Apple Menu, About This Mac, Modems shows "no information found"? Fax-STF shows "communicating" ? What is my problem. Is the internal modem gone or somehow not activated.
    Frustrated in NV,
    Bill

OK, I looked on the Apple website at the specs for the MacBook Pro, and they do not come with an internal modem, nor is it an option. So I have no idea how you faxed before, but you must be mistaken. Perhaps you did an eFax? To fax, you must use a modem connected to a phone line. Your post is very confusing, to say the least. There is no internal modem for either of these models. I have the external USB modem, which is also what is recommended for the MacBook Pro.

  • Faxing from internal modem

I've been using the internal modem on my G4 for years, works great. I've had it connected to a 2nd line which I split with an "A" - "B" switch between my G4 and Sharp fax machine. I now want to eliminate the 2nd line and fax through my main line, but when it's connected, nothing works. Do I need another devise to recognize a fax signal and voice signal? Would appreciate your help - GoodOleBD

I think the usual way to do this is to sign up for "distinctive ring" with your phone company for a second phone number on the same line. Some modems can recognize the distinctive ring of a call going to the fax number and answer the incoming fax call. A voice call coming in on your regular phone number won't have the distinctive ring and the modem won't answer it. I'm not sure if your phone will still ring when a fax call comes in. Your phone may be able to tell the difference and stay silent. Your phone company may be able to answer that question. The challenge will be finding a modem that works with Mac OS-X and recognizes distinctive ring and answers incoming fax calls. I don't know if your built in modem is capable of recognizing distinctive ring. I really doubt it. There are very few modems available for the Mac. They're all external USB modems. Most of them don't answer incoming fax calls. I did extensive testing of every Mac modem I could find a few years ago. I eventually had to buy Apple's external USB modem and upgrade to Tiger so it would work. It was the only Mac modem I could find that would answer an incoming fax call. I had to download "Pagesender" software because Tiger wasn't capable of answering an incoming fax call. I didn't have to purchase Pagesender just to receive incoming calls though. Tiger is capable of sending outgoing faxes. Panther works perfectly for sending and receiving faxes. I didn't need Pagesender or any third party fax application with Panther. For faxing with Jaguar and older I used FAXstf X. I recently got rid of all my land lines. I had separate lines for voice and fax. I switched to a cell phone for voice and a free eFax account for receiving faxes. I don't send out faxes anymore. Getting rid of the phone lines saved me a lot of money.

  • How do I add an airport extreme to a cable modem with only one ethernet port, while keeping that port connected to my Mac?

I have a mac pro connected by ethernet to a cable modem via ethernet.    There is only one ethernet port on the modem.
I want to keep the Mac connected via ethernet for speed.    Is there a way that I can add an airport extreme to this set up - for my ipad and roku, and for guests to use - or do I need to buy a router to put between the modem and the mac?
If I need a router, what kind?
    Thanks.

The modem connects to the WAN "O" port on an AirPort Extreme router.
The Mac Pro connects to one of the three LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme router.
Or if you do not need the ability to connect a hard drive to the USB port on the router, you can save a bit by using an AirPort Express.
The modem connects to the WAN "O" port, the Mac Pro connects to the LAN <-> port
Either the AirPort Extreme router or AirPort Express router will allow up to 50 wireless device to connect.
There are many other wireless modems offered by other manufacturers as well.

  • WRT54GS with Mac OS 10.6.8 and RCN cable modem not working

    Hello,
I have a Linksys WRT54GS, version 6 with Mac OS X (version 10.6.8) hooked up to a Scientific Atlantic cable modem, with RCN as the ISP.
Recently, RCN had some network issues, and so I had to power down and reset my modem. The modem is working fine now -- no problems at all when the Mac is connected direclty to the modem.
The router's network is OK in that I can connect the Mac wirelessly to the network, but I can't connect to the internet through the router (through neither the wireless or wired connection).
I have downloaded the latest firmware update for the router, following the Linksys site instructions, but this has not helped me solve the problem.
Does anyone have any advice as to what I should do? I did call Linksys tech support on the advice of RCN, and they said that the router does appear to be working (power, WLAN, and Internet lights are on), but they would be charging me nearly the cost of a new router to fix the problem.
    Any advice would be appreciated!

Since you upgraded the Router WRT54GS with the latest firmware so once reset the Router and power cycle the whole network… Then connect the Modem with Linksys Router on the Internet Port and then connect any one computer to any one of the Ethernet port on the Router [Numbered – 1, 2, 3 and 4]… Let me know the RCN connection is a DSL connection or cable connection…
So if you have a DSL connection you can refer to this link:
    http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=93&login=1&vw=1&app=search&articleid=4020&userrole=Linksy...
So if you have a Cable Internet Connection you can refer to this link:
    http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=93&vw=1&articleid=3686
As far as the wireless is concern:
    # Open up the browser and on the address bar type 192.168.1.1 that will open up the Router setup page…
    # Then Click on wireless Tab create the Wireless Network Name SSID and select the channel to 6, 9, and 11… Click Save Settings...
    # Then Click on Wireless Security sub tab and select the security mode and provide the password as per the requirement… Click Save Settings...
After doing the settings try to connect the preferred network on the wireless devices and check the connectivity….
