Mac to pc using airport exreme

Can anyone direct me to a general set of instructions for setting up a wireless connection between my imac intel (with airport extreme) and a Vista pc? I would like to share files.
I have successfully used one computer to detect the network created by the other - but I don't know what is next. Will a hard disk icon appear on my desktop when all is finally working - or what?
Thanks.

Thanks for the instructions - they are right on target for what I needed.
I was able to view files residing on the pc with the mac, but I was not able to do the same in the other direction.
The mac is not showing up in the Windows network folder.
I see something called "dial34-72" but cannot access it.
I was wondering if an observation on the mac side might be relevant:
Under file sharing, after I add the pc as a user, and then hit "options", I only see the mac account listed. Is this the problem?

  • I am currently running Mac OSx10.6.8 and need to upgrade to 10.7.5 or later to use Airport Exreme router. I am unsure about Mavericks and want to know if i can upgrade to the next highest OSX. 10.8.5? Any advice?

Can I upgrade my OS from 10.6.8 to 10.8.5 instead of going for the Maverick upgrade ? I need 10.7.5 or later to install an Airport Extreme router and I am hesitant to download Mavericks OS because of particularly bad reviews. Advice, opinions??

Yes, but it'll cost you $19.99.

  • Sharing ONE iTunes Library on TWO Macs (Mac and MacBook) Using Airport Extr

I did put this thread in the Airport Extreme forum, but I have moved it here on advice.
I realise that this has probably been answered a million times on this forum, so I apologize in advance. I recently bought an Airport Extreme and connected to my wireless home network, my internet speeds have increased (don't ask me why because I don't know) and I am really happy with the results, I have just one issue which I am hoping to resolve.
I have a iMac in my study, and a MacBook which I use all around the house. I have an external hard drive connected to the AEBS which has all of my files on, including my iTunes music. The problem is, I download music on both computers, and if I download a track or a movie onto the itunes library of one, it doesn't appear on the other computer, even though both iTunes apps are pointing to the same folder on the external hard drive.
The question I have is, how do I make both itunes libraries share the same library, so if I add a song on my mac it will automatically appear on my macbook when i use it next.
Both macs are fully up to date, and running Leopard
    Many Thanks
    JC

This is really an iTunes question. How do you configure a remote library which updates properly for all clients?
I suggest that you ask in the iTunes discussion area.

  • Found a fix for printing from Mac and PC using Airport Express!

I hope this helps somebody else because it's taken me hours and hours of frustration to trip over this solution. I have a MacBook, Airport Express and a Windows XP PC. Internet worked fine but I could not print form the PC via airport. I tied all the various links from iFelix (thanks to him for what sure seems like a lot of work to help others) but they didn't work. Here's what did...
To setup a printer using the Bonjour Printer Wizard:
    1. Download the Bonjour for Windows installation package from the
    Apple site http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/bonjour/.
    2. Install Bonjour for Windows by launching the BonjourSetup.exe file from the folder where place it was downloaded.
    3. Start the Bonjour Printer Wizard either by clicking its icon on the desktop or by selecting Start -> Programs -> Bonjour -> Bonjour Printer Wizard.
    4. Follow the installation steps until the Install Bonjour Printer screen appears.
    5. In the Install Bonjour Printer screen, select Generic in the Manufacturer list and then Generic / Postscript in the Model list. This step is the same for any printer model you have.
    6. Follow the rest of installation steps.
The key is the Generic and Generic/Postscript settings. I also set up the Parallels program on my Mac. These instructions come from their documentation. It's the only thing I've found that works. Hope it helps some of you!

  • Want to setup FTP server on Mac 10.6 using Airport Express

I am wondering if it is possible to use my mac as a FTP server with Airport Extreme. When I connect my mac directly to cable modem I could get an unique address for the mac. However, when I connect via Airport Extreme the address was changed to 10.0.1.3. This address can be used only in the same LAN but not from the outside.

You should be able to configure your AirPort Extreme to map the FTP ports to your Mac. In AirPort Utility put the AirPort Extreme into "manual setup" mode, then select the "Advanced" panel and the "Port Mapping" tab.
To make this work well you should first assign a "reserved" IP address to your Mac using the Internet panel, DHCP tab, "DHCP Reservations" section.

  • Remote host ftp error dw8 and Mac OS X using airport

I'm learning PHP at a local tech school and can put files and
can connect to my SQL database at the school using DW CS3 and Win
XP. I have a wired connection at school. However, when I try to
work on my site at home on my Mac using OS X 10.4.11 and DW8 I
receive the error: "An FTP error occurred cannot make connection to
host. The remote host cannot be found.
I'm am using passive ftp in dw8 and in my network preferences
on my Mac. I've double checked my settings for the site definition
and cannot find anything wrong. I'm using the same site definition
at school and at home. Since I can connect at school I think it may
be a problem with my firewall and airport. FTP on port 21 is
    allowed under firewall preferences.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I am thoroughly
    confused!

If you home is not on the same network as your school I'm
    surprised you can
connect via Transmit because 10.4.11 is not a valid IP

  • Networking Using Airport

    Hey,
Could someone point me to some info on getting my Mac's networked?
I have 4 machines, two hardwired and two wireless. I've gone over the settings on all but just can't make it work. One machine will only show it's drop box the others nothing at all.
    Any help greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Carl

Drop box being it's public shared folder. All the Macs are online without any problems either with wifi or wired Ethernet. I just can't to find any rhyme or reason why they can't see each other.
Now I understand: You're having trouble with file sharing over your network. What type of settings do you see in the "Sharing" panel of System Preferences on each Mac?
I use Airport Extreme and a Linksys router.
Are all your Macs on the same "subnet", in other words, do their IP addresses match except for the digits after the last period?

why cant i print from my ipad using airport express but i can print from my mac using the express

Because your printer has to be Airprint compatible and connected to WiFi. There are applications, such as Printopia, that will allow you to print through your computer.

  • Using Airport Express to Communicate a Mac & a PC

    Hi,
I have a MacBook, a Vista PC Laptop and an Airport Express (AE) 802.11n.
I already had a wireless router and connected my AE to "join an existing wireless network". Since my wireless modem is on the other end of the room, and my AE is on the other end next to my A/V receiver for the optimum -less is best- cable crowd. Therefore AE _is not_ connected to the wireless router by an ethernet cable.
Both from the Mac and PC I can use AE to stream music thru AirTunes, so no problem with that and AE works fine.
    *Here is my question:*
    1. How can I connect my Mac and PC using my AE?
    2. Is the only way to have the AE set up in "create a wireless network" option or not?
    3. If I have to exercise option2 should I connect my AE to my wireless router by Ethernet? or wirelessly is also OK?
    4. Do I need special configuration on Vista. Since I connect my XP PC to the wireless network, my Mac can detect it (but cannot connect), but it does not detect the Vista at all??
I would appreciate your help. Thanks in advance..

    1. How can I connect my Mac and PC using my AE?
Since your MacBook and Vista PC Laptop are connected to the "wireless router" they are already networked... through that wireless router.
Using the AirPort Express (AX) as the wireless router wouldn't change anything.

  • Using Airport Extreme- Printers & Hard Drives - Mac and WIndows XP Network

I might be asking a really dumb question now, I have a Mac Pro, a PC my sons use and a laptop my wife uses. The PC and laptop both run XP Pro.
I have my Airport Extreme set up and working well with my BT Home Hub acting as my modem only - that went much easier than I thought.
All I want to do is to set up a network - my Mac (wired) to my Airport Extreme with a Canon Printer and external hard drive. I also want to be able to share files on the PC and Laptop (wireless) with other users as well as the printers. Ideally, i'm looking for a video website that will easily show how to set this up. I appreciate I may need to view several clips to get this sorted. I have tried YouTube without much success.
As I said, this may be a dumb question.
    Thanks in advance, Matt

    1. So, what I want to do now is share an external hard drive also connected to my AEBS using a USB hub.
AirPort: How to mount an AirPort Extreme USB hard disk volume in Mac OS X and Windows
    2. Share files on my other PC machines as well as their printers. So, if I need some text printing done quickly, I would print it from my sons' pc printer downstairs but request it from my mac upstairs.
I'm sure that Windows has the ability to share a printer, but I have no details on how to enable it.
    3. Access / share files between Mac Pro, laptop and PC
On your Macs, go to the Sharing preference pane and enable File Sharing. Now they can be seen by other devices.
"How to Share Files between your Mac and PC"
"File sharing between Mac and PC"
    4. Access Mac Pro online via Back to my Mac (I do have a mobile me account for this).
In the MobileMe preference pane on the Mac Pro, enable the Back To My Mac feature. Then on your remote Mac the Mac Pro should appear in the Finder's sidebar as a shared item.

Maybe you are looking to re-purpose this equipment versus getting rid of it if so, the best thing to do is search the internet for tutorials.  And I say this because it's what I would do, there are a lot of tutorials online.    Hope you can find good use for them.  Worse case scenario if you can't find something right now, package them very nicely and when you come across something unbox and enjoy.  I've re-purposed a mac color classic and LOVE IT!!

  • Can I connect my I MAC 8.1 to a wireless modem like verizon mifi 4g using airport ?

I am thinking of buying a verizon 4G jetpack Mifi 4510L. I know it will work for my laptop. However my desktop I MAC 8.1, I'm not sure of, is there a way to connect using airport or will I need another devise?

If you have a recent iMac, then it will most definitely have built-in WiFi (Apple calls this "AirPort" - which is the WiFi component in the machine). If you have Mac OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard (or Mac OS X Lion) on your iMac, and you have an iMac from at least 2007 onwards, I'd presume it has WiFi built-in, and so you will be able to connect to a Wi-Fi network fine. However, if you are referring to an old iMac (i.e. the iMac with various plastic colours) then it will not have Wi-Fi built-in as, to the best of my knowledge, it did not have built-in WiFi when it was sold in the late 90s to the early 2000s.

  • Using Airport Express to create a connection between two Macs

We have two G5s in the office, one of them has built-in Airport and the PowerMac doesn't. We have Airport Express but we aren't sure whether it can be used as hardware to allow the non-built-in-Airport G5 to HAVE wireless access to the other Mac's files and so forth...
In other words functioning as a server connection or a network between the two.
The Airport Express didn't come with a USB cable, thus my suspicions.. Is this meant to be used solely with Macs with built-in Airport?
    Many thanks,
    Anne

The USB port on the AirPort Express (AX) is ONLY for a single compatible USB printer.
The AX can be used to allow a non-wireless computer connect to a wireless network (via it's Ethernet port) ONLY if the AX is configured to use WDS to connect to the wireless network. If the wireless network is created by another AX or an AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS), using WDS is possible.
Be aware that each WDS link cuts your available bandwidth in half.

Using Airport Express for External speakers and Apple TV.  When I'm on MAC computer adn using internet sound from Internet does not go through external speakers.  Instead it comes out of Mac computer speaker.  Why?

As far as I know, the Airport Express only transmits sounds via Itunes. So every other sound (internet, but also incoming mail) will be coming out of your mac instead of your external speakers.

  • Using Airport Express as internet connection for one Mac and one PC

Will probably be judged a complete dork for this question. I have successfully set up my Imac G5 to run an internet connection through an Airport express. My partner runs a PC (Windows XP) and I want to connect this too. Have installed a USB wireless card on the PC, and installed Airport Utility, but it just won't find the Airport Express - it will however find the Imac with something like 96% signal strength. So I set up a network on the Mac and have successfully linked into it with the PC, but it soon comes up with a connectivity problem that will not allow internet browsing. So two questions - can I connect two computers to the Airport Express at once for internet browsing, or do I have to do it through linking the PC to a wireless network? If the latter is the route - any ideas on what the connectivity issue will be? Help!

No, not if the AirPort Express "joins" the wireless network.
No, I do not want to join a network.
It is possible to have the AirPort Express "create" a separate wireless network that would not have access to the Internet, but if you did this, you would need to log off of your normal network....(losing your Internet connection) and then log onto the AirPort Express network when you wanted to listen to AirPlay.
Then, when you wanted to have Internet access, you would have to log off of the AirPort Express network and log back onto your normal wireless network.
Ok, I understand that it is not possible to use airport express only for sound streaming while having an Internet connection at the same time. Airport express does need to join a network if I want sound streaming next an Internet connection. I wanted airport express not to get into way of my Internet connection because in this case the sound streaming messes up sometimes. When I configure airport express only as a sound output, the problems I encounter fade away but then I cannot access to the Internet. Anyhow thanks a lot for the answer.
