MAC to Windows Server2008 share renaming files leaving 0 byte original

Hi all
We are experiencing a weird issue on our Design studio MACS that are connected to a Windows Server 2008 R2 file server.
When renaming files, it is leaving behind the original file at 0 bytes, these are generally image files PSDs, Jpgs etc
It is also intermittently taking a long time when typing the characters and trying to save the change back to the server.
Has anybody experienced something like this or knows where to start in finding solution?
We have 1 Mac Pro and 4x 27" IMacs
Thanks in advance

  • Mac on Windows SMB Share- IDLK files disappearing allowing several users to access the same file

    Hi,
We have a volume licensing agreement with Adobe and have around 16 Adobe CS6 licenses all used on Macs. The network is based around Windows servers and shares which the Macs connect to via an SMB connection to the server. The issue we're having is that when an InDesign file is opened, sometimes it will not create an IDLK file (or sometimes it will create one but it will disappear seconds later) and it allows several people to view the same file at the same time. Obviously two or more people working on the same file can, will and has caused issues with overwriting documents without knowledge of doing so.
Has anyone else encountered this or have any ideas as to what might help us resolve this issue?
    Thanks

When you open a file from a previous version (you'll see converted in
the file name) there is no CS6 file in existence, yet. Once the file is
saved as a CS6 file, the lock file is created. The whole procedure is
designed so that you must make a fully conscious decision to overwrite
the old version file with a new one.
This is no different than creating a new document that hasn't been saved
    yet.

  • Switched from Mac to Windows, PC cannot see files.

I have a copy of CS2. I bought it for my Mac OSX 10.3.9. My mac died. On a very small budget now, so I bought an inexpensive PC. The install disk shows no files on the PC. Called Adobe support and was told I have to purchase a new full version again? Anyone have an alternative to purchasing the full version...AGAIN? CS2 worked perfectlly well for my needs.

    Oh, wait . . .
Oddly, that may be the trick here.
CS2 was written for PPC Macs. CS2 can be flaky on newer Intel Macs and won't even run in the latest OS X 10.7 Lion. So if someone is in the market for a Mac that would run CS2, they'd have to buy used.  One can buy a G5 Mac on eBay for ~$200-$500. That's cheap.
If we're not interested in old Macs, an upgrade/crossgrade to CS5 is in order now before Adobe releases CS6 and you are out of the upgrade window for both Mac and Windows.

  • Switching to MAC from Windows: How to open files in Office 2007  VMFusion?

    Dear all,
    Intro:
I switched to MAC and now cannot find the solution to a simple problem.
First: I need an Office 2007 PowerPoint FULLY compatible solution.
What did not work: IWork, NeoOffice, Office 2008 (this is not fully compatible with Office 2007 Files)
I also had problems with: Parallels (not stable, too many hangups), codeweaver crossover (office files do not even open sometimes, good idea but not suitable for serious office jobs)
Now I have VMWare Fusion with WinXP and Office 2007 as this seems to be the only truly stable and best solution to run Office 2007 on Mac
    Question:
How to open files in Office 2007 on MAC VMWare Fusion easily?
It would be nice to spotlight the file and click and it opens in powerpoint or excel or word 2007 in Virtual Machine.
The only known solution to me is to use the Windows explorer to navigate to the file and then open it from Fusion WinXP. This is very cumbersome and honestly makes me think of getting back to a windows machine as I work with office frequently.
    Thank you for your help.

Thank you for the quick reply.
Yes, I have Office 2007 installed. The problem is that to open files in Fusion virtual machine I have to use the windows explorer and navigate to the file to open it. Now that I have the mac I want to use the good feature of spotlight. So when I search and find the file I want to open I cannot click on it on the mac (or in finder) but I have to switch back to the virtual machine, locate the file again and open it from windows.
You might think - ok, why not skip the first step of using spotlight, and look up the file in windows explorer before anything else?
Correct, but I know from parallels that there is a file association possible to directly access the file in office 2007.
This does not seem possible in Fusion - So the question is whether there is a possibility on the mac to associate the file and to click on it in finder/spotlight and the office 2007 application in fusion opens the file. So far I could not find anything.
    Thanks

  • VPN between Mac and Windows? share printer and USB drive

Hey everyone, I'm out at college and have a Windows SP2 desktop set up in my room with the printer and our external hard drive. I travel around campus with my macbook pro (10.5), and it'd be really nice to access the printer and my external hard drive.
Problem is that since its a huge vast network, I think its near impossible to do a direct "IP" connect to it. So the next option is to use a VPN, which I have experience with Windows and Hamachi, but I have no idea how to incorporate a VPN between a mac and a windows computer.
    Thanks!

Hi Eric and welcome to Discussions and the Apple world.
Mac OSX can read and write from Windows partitions (like the BootCamp Windows partition you are about to create) when using FAT32 as file system for Windows.
However with FAT32 you are limited to a partition size of 32GB.
Mac OSX can also read from Windows partitions that uses the NTFS file system, but it can not write to them unless you use a third-party helper like either Paragons NTFS for Mac http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/ or NTFS-3G http://www.ntfs-3g.org/
Windows can not even see or use a Mac OSX partition without additional help by MacDrive http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/

  • Cant find right media player on Mac for Windows Media Mpeg-4 files

o Must transfer WMP mpeg 4 files via bluetooth to mac
o Have tried DivX converter = "unknown error (-2041)
DivX player = nothing, just blinking pause button
Flip 4mac (WMV) = won't read (won't even make itself available as option for file)
VLC = picture but no sound (yay)
Windows Media Player = won't read (won't even make itself available as option for file)
Quick time = "invalid sample description found in movie"
MPlayer 0SX2 = picture but no sound (yay, and yes volume is turned up on all devices)
It's only a few files stuck on broken Sprint PPC 6700 which I am exchanging for new one but want to preserve a few short home movies. Can't hook up w/ windows pc because that's the part that's broken (cable jack) and must use blue tooth, my windows pc has no blue tooth. Files transfer and play but at best it's just video and no audio.
Am off to store for blank cd to see if I can burn files to disc on mac and a memory card (for phone) for temp back up. But don't know if that will solve problem, just band-aids.
    thx

    Hi Tanner,
My guess is that 10.4 does not recognize the .sitx format that previously worked on my 10.3
Mac OS X 10.4 no longers comes with StuffIt Expander. You'll need to install that to be able to use .sitx files.

  • 10.6.4 won't drop windows SMB shares after  I leave network

I have a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook with 2Gb SDRAM running 10.6.4 and I'm having difficulty getting rid of old SMB windows shares from the finder sidebar once I leave the network. The darn things stick around no matter what. When I rejoin the network they work just like they should.
    Any help would be appreciated,

Sorry to bump a thread guys, but I haven't been able to solve anything. Google hasn't been any help this time around. I truly am stuck!

  • I have InDesign on PC. If I get a file originated on a mac can I open/edit this file?

I am thinking of installing InDesign on a PC instead of a Mac.
If I get a file that has been originated on a mac will I still be
able to open and edit the file

be aware of mac "forked files" these are resource files native to mac and cannot be read/opened with a PC.
You'll usually see two of the same file:
    ".__yourfilename.indd" and "yourfilename.indd"
the files beginning with ".__" are useless to you on a pc and can safely be deleted. The one without ".__" is the one you will want to keep and use.
Also if you have been saving to a mac formatted hard drive (HFS+ journaled) you may have some difficulty seeing/reading this drive on your PC. You'll need to save these to a drive formatted to be read by a PC. If you cannot transition the data off an HFS+ journaled drive you can read mac drives with a program such as "macdrive"

How can I batch rename files while preserving the original file name in metadata? (Don't want the old file name as part of the new file name)

With a simple terminal script. More details needed, though.

  • Share files between Mac and Windows sessions.

    Hello,
I've a business(sales) software(Ciel) which is working on Mac. This software is generating a file which can be exported to another (Ciel) software(accounting) but which only works on Windows. I've made 2 sessions for both operating systems, split hard disk in 2 partitions and installed the both software separately.
How can I let the windows partition being accessible to writing mode from mac session in order to export the file from mac to windows?
    Thank's in advance.

You may want to investigate Parallels for Mac. It will allow you to share everything in your Mac with Windows.

  • Difficult to Rename Files (Finder windows keep Refreshing)

Has anyone else noticed how difficult it is to rename files in a folder? It is almost as if Leopard's Finder keeps refreshing (or building thumbnails) or something. Here is my scenario:
    - Browse to a folder (in my case a folder with large files)
    - Hit enter on a file and start renaming the file
    - After 1-2 seconds, finder jumps out of edit mode by itself (as if the page somehow refreshed)
    - Hit enter again and keep on editing
    - 1-2 seconds later, jumps out of edit mode again.
    - Leave the window for 20-30 seconds
    - Then hit enter, then it is easy to rename the file.
    - Thereupon, immediately try to edit the next file, and bam, it exits edit mode after 1-2 seconds (almost as if the previous file rename triggered a 'refresh this entire view' event)
It is incredibly annoying to attempt to rename a bunch of files with Leopard.

Ah - I cant seem to get into the habit of "get info" to rename my files. It seems counter productive.
Is there any other workaround / fix to make the finder stop jumping me out of renaming a file?
It is incredibly annoying. I will get a few characters typed in, and it will jump out of editing... and then to add insult to injury, the folders is updated and the file jumps to its new alphabetical location in the list - So I have to go find the partially named file to finish the job.
People ask me if I like Windows or Mac. I say both have benefits and weaknesses. Renaming files is one of my Mac's weaknesses - it seems. It shouldn't be - it is a basic part of an operating system.
    Help!

  • Mac OS X Mountain Lion randomly disconnects from a Windows SMB share

First le t me say that I am still trying to diagnose if this is a hardware or software issue.  But I figured I would start here.  I work in a mixed environment with Mac's and PC's and all working together with no issues.  I deployed this Mac about 6 months ago to production.  The person using this Mac recently has been complaining of the Mac disconnecting from a Windows SMB share at random times.  The server is running Windows Server 2008R2 and has been running for 3 years.  I have other Macs on the same network connecting to it with varying operating systems ranging from 10.6 to 10.8.  None of the other Mac's are experiencing this same issue.  So I know it is isolated to this Mac.  I was wondering if there might be something in the software like a setting that needs changed that might be causing this.  Any suggestions are welcome.

I have renamed my pc and everything is ok with the file sharing SMB. Both my iMac and my pc can share files very easily.

  • How do I stop Mac creating files on Windows server creating hidden files?

I have my macbook connecting to a windows 2003 server share. Whenever I write a file, either by creating or editing and saving, it creates a hidden file too. I edit filename.doc then I'll also have ._filename.doc in that directory. It's distracting the windows users and causing me to become a little unpopular. How can I prevent those hidden files from being created?

This happens in part with some Mac files that contain both a resource and a data fork. Windows doesn't know how to handle these files and breaks them apart. Also, Mac OS creates certain hidden files used by the Finder that also get transferred but are no longer hidden on Windows because Windows does not recognize the "." preceding a filename as the Unix shorthand for "invisible."
There are a number of free utilities you will find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate that can prevent this and the hidden files from appearing on the Windows drive.
Zipping files before transfer will also prevent the problem from occurring.
