Mac Update/External Hard Drive

Today I finally let my software updater do it's thing and it installed these 4 updates:
Quicktime (7.6.2)
Java for Mac OS X 10.4 Release 9 (1.0)
Itunes (8.2.0)
Security Update 2009-002 PowerPC (1.0)
I then rebooted and tried to plug in my Seagate External Hard Drive and I get a prompt that says:
DISK INSERTION
The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer.
What gives? It was working 10 minutes before... any ideas?
BiddyB

Hi BiddyB, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.
If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.
Then see if Disk Utility can see/repair the external Hard Drive.

  • Moving iTunes library from PC to Mac using external hard drive

    Hi there,
I recently bought myself a MacBook Air. This is my first Apple computer as I'd always used Windows before. On my old computer (running Vista), I built up a huge iTunes library. I really want to move this over to my Mac but there are two things which are making this a bit more complicated than it needs to be:
    1. I want to keep all of my playlists, play counts, date added etc.
    2. I don't want the songs to be stored on the computer, I want them kept on an external hard drive. So the library will show all the songs but I need to actually have the external hard drive plugged in to play them. Also saves me a **** of a lot of precious Mac space.
I have read a few things about how to do this so I'm a little along the way. I consolidated all my music files on my old computer and copied them over to the Hard Drive. But from here I just can't get it right. Assuming I've done nothing from this point, what would be the next steps you would take to make points 1 and 2 happen? I will try again based on your instructions but if it doesn't work then I come back and specify at what points it isn't working.
I would be ever so grateful for some guidance on this.
    Cheers

Did you close iTunes on your old computer before you tried to copy it?
If that is not the case right click on the itunes Library.itl in finder.
    Usually found in username/Music/iTunes
Select Get info and in the box that appears on the left scroll down to the bottom and check the permissions.
When that is resolved it should just copy over

  • Moving from PC to MAC - Existing external hard drive

I purchased a new iMac yesterday.  This is a change from always using PCs.  I have three external hard drives - one connected via USB and two connected to my internal network.  All three are NTFS partitioned drives.  From what I've read, it looks like I can read the contents of the drives, but not write to them from the new Mac.  Is this correct?  It sounds like I will need to move the contents off of the drives and then reformat them from the new iMac.  Is that correct?  Any better suggestions on how to work with these drives and the new Mac?
    Thanks
    Bill

yeah you are correct if they are in fat32 both osx and windows can read and write
if they are in ntfs osx can only read
if they are in apple file system only osx can read and write

  • From PC to Mac via external hard drive

i really need some advice please...
i have recently moved out of my parents house to live with my partner
i bought a compatible external hard drive for PC and Mac so i could transfer all my music/iphone data etc
the hard drive works fine with the mac so there is no issue there
however, my partner also has an external hard drive. itunes only works when its plugged in and all of his music library comes up etc
i tried to get itunes to do that for my hard drive so that i wont lose any of my iphone data etc...
i am yet to succeed and now whenever i put my partners hard drive it and click itunes, itunes is now blank
is it possible to have to seperate libraries and for itunes to recognise them? i.e when i plug my hard drive in and click itunes all my files and music appear
then if i take mine out and put my partners in, for his music to appear etc
i would really appreicate any suggestions?
    thanks

When you connect a different hard disk, launch iTunes while holding the option key down and you'll get a prompt to select a library or create a new one.  Select the library on your HD.  Alternate iTunes library: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1589
This could become cumbersome, so check some of these alternatives:

  • HT1751 unable to copy iTunes folder from mac to external hard drive, says hard drive can't be modified

when attempting to copy itunes folder to external hard drive, response is unable to copy file, hard drive can't be modified. What does that mean and how to I use external HD to transfer itunes library to new PC?

The drive is probably formated as NTFS, and your Mac doesn't have an NTFS write driver installed. Why not transfer the folder over your network?

  • How to share files between pc and mac via external hard drive

how can i share my files(mp3,mp4,documents) from my harddisk with mac. i am a new mac user and i have a harddisk of NTFS format(as i was a pc user).I learned that mac supports FAT32 format and therefore i can't write data on my external hard drive.
but, reading a section of OSX yosemite(under compatibility) it is said that now we can easily share files between pc and mac.
So please suggest me easier way that how can i share files between macs and pc as my friends uses pc and in future i really want to share my data with them without any hustle and i dont wanna loose my data in future

You can format the HDD to a common one like ExFAT or Fat32 but a reformat will delete all data off of the HDD.
Your other option is to use a third party software such as Paragon or Tuxera that will allow you to write to a NFTS formatted HDD.
    Ciao.

  • How do I transfer imovie projects and events to new mac from external hard drive

bought a  macbook pro retina.  backed up 3yr old macbook pro to external hard drive.  how do I transfer imovie projects and events to new mac?  thanks!

    Hi dalbatross,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
Did you set up your new computer by creating a Time Machine backup and restoring from it?
If so, the Events and Projects that were on your internal Macintosh HD would copied to your new computer.
Here is another way to copy the events & projects to the new computer from the external drive:
iMovie Help: Work with multiple libraries
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov3fa25bae7
Copy or move projects, events, or clips between libraries or hard disks
Connect a hard disk that contains the target library to your computer, or copy the target library to your computer.
Choose File > Open Library, and choose an option from the submenu. You can choose from recently opened libraries at the top of the submenu, locate an existing library on your computer, or create a new library.
The selected library is opened in the Libraries list, with the first event selected and its contents displayed in the browser.
In the Libraries list, select the event that contains the item you want to move or copy.
In the browser, select the item you want to move or copy.Note:  To select multiple items, hold down the Command key as you click the items you want to select, or drag a selection rectangle around the items.
    Do one of the following:
To move items between events or libraries: Drag the clip or project to another event or library.
To copy items between events or libraries: Option-drag the clip or project to another event or library by first starting to drag and then holding down the Option key as you drag.
    Cheers,

  • Transfer data from mac to external hard drive

I am new to macs and am a bit lost.
I have a made up external hard drive (internal hard drive in a case) - TOSHIBA MK8025GAS Media. It is connected to the mac via USB.
I have been using it to transfer data from my pc to mac. The mac sees it and i can copy things from the hard drive to mac without problems. What i cannot do is to transfer from the mac onto the hard drive.
I pulled up the mac info of the hard drive and its both writable and ejectable (Has two partitions). In the partitions the info states that the owners aren't enabled, cannot turn owners off and cannot be formatted. Also the S.M.A.R.T. status is not supported. Not usre what all this means!
Can anyone tell me how to set it up to be able to transfer files to the hard drive from the mac and if it is possible to still transfer from windows to the hard drive?
    Thank you in advance.

    Thank you for the info.
A friend also told me that i could erase the hard drive using the disk utility in ms dos format. I have tried this and then could also partition it afterwards.
At the moment this seems to be working in both Mac and PC.
One thing i have noticed is when i try to transfer disk images (over 4Gb), near the end i get an 'unexpected error occured' (error code 1309).
    From the internet:
error -1309 fileBoundsErr: file's EOF offset mark or size is too big
    Whatever this means?

Thanks for that, it was really helpful.
Glad to hear that worked for you. While formatting an external drive with a Mac format is best if it will be used only with a Mac, if the files on the drive have to be accessible to a PC also, it's possible to format it in an exFAT format, which both the Mac and a PC can read from and write to. However, if you do that, do the actual formatting while the external is connected to the PC.

  • New Mac user-External Hard Drive question...

Just purchased my 1st Mac/the new Mac mini. Arrived today & am very impressed.
Set-up, right out of the box, was incredibly SIMPLE and I cant believe what a little dynamo this thing is! I've thought about 'switching' to a Mac from PC for quite a while, but was always a little nervous, so I've patiently watched & waited from the sidelines- until now - and it was well worth the wait.
My 'question' is, can anyone recommend a good external hard drive I can use interchangeably between my PC & my new Mini? Still using the PC until I get completely acclimated with Mac platform/etc - I'd like something with at least
    1TB storage. Thanks!

Time Machine requires an external hard drive
You can back up by other means to CDs or DVDs
If you are a .MAC customer you get a decent backup program that backs up to your iDisk and/or to CD-DVD
You would NOT want to back up to your internal drive since that would accomplish nothing - a dead or messed up HD is no good for either the beginning part of the other part where the backup is

  • Needed some help transferring files from Mac to external hard drive

Hey guys, I just needed some urgent help.
My friend wanted some files to be transferred to his external hard drive from my Mac. As he is a Windows user, I guess his hard drive is formatted for Windows as well. As I plug in the hard disk in my Mac, I can't transfer the files. It says something like "the disk cannot be modified".
So, please help me on how can I transfer this files from my Mac and if I do format it to work with the Mac, will it work for Windows later?
    Please help!
    Cheers
    Sam

The Windows drive is probably formatted NTFS which is not natively writable
by the Mac. It should be formatted as FAT32 to be usable on both.

  • Transferring playlist from one mac to external hard drive- to another mac

Hi, a buddy made a playlist of music for me (about 3 days worth) of his music. We tried to download the list to his extenal hard drive so that I could then upload it to my itunes. However, whenever we tried to send the playlist to his external, the titles show up momentarily then are no where to be found in the external hard drive. Help
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

  • Backup pro mac to external hard drive

I want to backup my pro mac to an external hard drive using time machine. Does time machine keep user accounts (mine & wife ) separate or does it copy everything as one lot of data ?

Time Machine will copy everything on your Mac, from as many accounts as you have.
It keeps everything separate, so that almost anything can be restored at the file level.
There is a "Black List" to which you can add Directories or files you do NOT want backed up.

  • Mini Mac as external hard drive?

    Hi
Can I attach my Mac Mini via a firewire to my laptop and use it as an external hard drive?
I like to make movies yet I only bought, by mistake, a Mac book which doesn't offer the same capabilites as the Mac Pro. For example, I've been advised that Final Cut will be problamtic on my laptop due to insufficient video card etc. So I thought I'd use my unemployed Mac Mini.
    Thanks in anticipation
    Barry

I've been advised that Final Cut will be problamtic on my laptop due to insufficient video card etc. So I thought I'd use my unemployed Mac Mini.
Sorry, perhaps I'm misunderstanding, but how would connecting your mini via Target Disk Mode to your laptop help with the issue of an insufficiently-powerful video card in the laptop? Or are you just planning to copy the movies from the laptop to the mini?
Note that the Mac mini really has no more powerful a graphics processor than do the MacBooks. In fact, the Intel Mac minis have the same processor, the Intel GMA 950, as the first-generations of the MacBooks (later MacBooks have more powerful graphics processors). The PowerPC minis have an ATI Radeon 9200 which is probably a better graphics chip than the 950, but you lose performance due to the PowerPC processor. So I don't think you'll gain much if anything by using the Mac mini for your video editing.
    Regards.
