Mac Upgrade Tiger to Leopard on a new Mac

I just received my new iMac today. Leopard was pre-installed on it and did not make use of the data transfer option from my old iBook using firewire at the beginning when I started up the iMac. Instead, e.g. in iCal, I exported all calendars from the iBook to the iMac using the import/export feature (using a USB-stick). In Mail I imported all mailboxes and here is my first question: How do I transfer "Rules" and "Signatures" to the iMac?
Can I just replace the new "Mail" library folder with the old one?

Thanks, I will try to transfer the library and the files with the Migration Assistant and see what it will do to the already configured stuff. I hope it will erase and replace it with the transfer, otherwise I will just do a brand new installation of Leopard and run the Migration Assistent right after. So it will be a clean install.

Mac OS X 10.5 was release October 26, 2007. Its 10.5.8 update is the newest operating system available for PowerPC Macs that meet its requirements. It is available occasionally by calling Apple online store's phone number, even though the website does not show it. Many want to upgrade to Leopard because of i-Devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod) bought saying iTunes 10 or later is recommended. To check if that really is required, look at the i-Device requirements section of this tip
If your Mac is Intel, and running 10.4.11 or earlier, and meets the hardware requirements of 10.6, a less expensive upgrade solution is to upgrade to 10.6 directly. No need to upgrade to 10.5 unless your software won't run in 10.6.
Software listed for Intel Mac and PowerPC Macs can run on 10.5 for the platform indicated in the link. For Leopard you need
867 Mhz on a single processor or faster (1 Ghz and higher are faster).
256 MB of RAM (preferably 512MB of more based on arbitrary experience).
9 GB of hard disk space (arbitrary experience adds another 15%) free.
Macs newer than August 28, 2009 can't run Leopard, and require a minimum of Snow Leopard.

Classic is not compatible with 10.5. 10.4.11 on a PowerPC Mac or earlier is needed for Classic.

Should you require only iTunes 9, and are running a minimum of 10.4, backup your data at least twice, check in Apple menu -> About This Mac if you have a G3, G4, G5 (which is PowerPC), or Intel Core (which is Intel) make sure you are running 10.4.11 PowerPC or 10.4.11 Intel (depending on the aforementioned processors), and download iTunes 9.2.1. The only reason you should upgrade to 10.5 is if some other software is required.
Boot Camp is only available on Intel Macs with 10.5 and higher.

All of which I recommend you backup your data at least twice before upgrading, and have sufficient disk space to install, and all your third party applications and drivers are known to be Leopard compatible, and after backing up your data you dismount and disconnect all but Apple keyboard and mouse and if there is an external display, that too. And just before you install repair permissions.
If any of the above terms confuse you, ask on the Discussions board what they mean, and one of the people who knows will gladly assist you.
You must use the installer disc that looks like *, and does not say Upgrade, Dropin, or OEM, if you choose to upgrade to Leopard.

Music hardware is working me a little better now, I think it has strengthened the stability and gives no error messages.
I afraid that I have become later unstable again .

Go to the Apple menu and select "About This Mac". You will get a window similar to this one -
You current OS X version number will be shown as I've marked.
OS X 10.4.x is Tiger, 10.5.x is Leopard, 10.6.x is Snow Leopard, 10.7.x is Lion, and 10.8.x is Mountain Lion.
Whether or not you can go to the latest OS X version depends upon your hardware -
You will need to purchase the retail set for the OS X version you want; there is no pint in getting and installing any intermediate versions. Once the retail version has been installed, you can update it to the latest release for that version via download updater.

Right-click on one of the files and choose 'get info'. in the info box. Change the 'open with' setting to your correct application. Check the 'always open with' option before OK-ing the change, then click the 'change all' button before closing the info window.

Just upgraded Tiger to Leopard. Clarisworks not supported. I can successfully convert CW4.0 doc's to AW6.0 doc's using MacLink Plus Deluxe but the problem is I than cannot print them or convert to PDF, either.

I have hit a point where I don't think my expertise is going to solve the problem. You could ask your prof to run it with -Xprof or

timing statements to get a rough idea of which parts

I'll venture that your problem here is that you're using two very different versions of Mac OS X. The USB adapter has been useful to me when making big downloads or while using other networks, but it might not be your case.
Here's what I would advise, though it may be less than stellar: Copy the files you need into folders and move them through a USB flash drive or using that external hard drive of yours. (Could the format be the reason your MBA can't see it?). Some stuff like calendars and contacts can be exported too. At least in Lion, I haven't used Tiger in a while.

Be sure to install the latest version of Safari (version 5.1.7) which is available via Software Update (in the Apple menu) if you have not already installed it. This update will automatically disable older versions of Flash when new versions are available, and will instruct you on how to install the latest version on your system. This should help keep your system safe from any vulnerabilities in Flash.
Note that this is only useful if you use Safari, though other browsers have their own update mechanisms you should research and enable or configure to your liking.

In the past, people who bought Macs between the date of the announce of the new OS release date, and the actual release date, have been eligible for a free or low-cost upgrade. So if that continues, it looks like you bought your new Mac a little to early to qualify. Moreover, Apple is under no obligation to continue the old free upgrade policy at all.
