Mac users running Windows: Innoculate against spyware & virus

I hope this thread I'm going to start is appropriate to this discussion board. I have been a Mac user since 1989 and an Apple user before then. Never a Windows user.
With the new intel macs, I am now using Windows occassionally to run a program (Atlas.ti) that is only made for Windows. I'm using Parallels to rung Windows XP Pro (SP2)I have found, to my horror, that getting infected by spyware and adware is really easy on Windows machines. I rarely use the Windows side to browse but once in a while I do when I'm using Atlas.ti and mostly to sites that are reputable. Just by doing that, I've been infected with spyware that no free anti-spyware program can remove after the fact. Something called "Trojan.cm.small" or something like that. I don't have the exact name.
Because of those problems, I've had to re-create my virtual disk 3 times, each time getting smarter about how to use Windows machines. The following is my latest tip and I wanted to share it. If any of you have better tips, please post to the thread.
TIP BEGINS:
I’ve had to recreate my virtual disk at least three times, the last time being yesterday, thanks to spyware that none of the free spyware programmes could remove. They could detect it just fine but they couldn’t remove it. And get this, I rarely use Windows and hardly use it to browse on the internet but just the few minutes of browsing on the internet has caused me great problems.
What I did differently than the previous two re-installations is the following:
1. After (re)installing Windows, I immediately do Windows update and MADE SURE I did NOT browse to ANY other site. I allowed Windows to completely update itself include several restarts and multiple runs of updates.
2. After that’s done, I installed the following anti-spyware and anti-virus software. All were free except the virus software which was available free to users at my university:
a. Spybot Search & Destroy
b. Spyware Blaster
c. SpywareGuard
d. Windows Defender Beta
e. McAfee VirusScan
3. I installed these programmes one at a time and updated them and performed the appropriate setting changes before proceeding to install the remaining software.
I did a lot of research to determine which anti-spyware programmes to use and determined these were the best according to my research. You can do you own research and I think one of the best ways is to go to a reputable university’s website, type in “Spyware” and see how THEY tell their faculty and students to innoculate their computers against spyware. The sites I used were:
a. University of California, Santa Cruz
b. University of Calfiornia, Berkeley
c. Carnegie Mellon University
d. University of Illinois, Urbana-Champagne
I hope this tip helps Mac users. It’s only since moving to an Intel Mac did I start using Windows and I can’t believe how quickly my computer (the VM side) became infected. As I say, I had to re-install 3 times and each time I became wiser. I hope this is the last time I have to do a complete re-installation.
One last thing, after installing all those anti-spyware and anti-virus programmes, you might find that when installing your own software (in my case, Atlas.ti) might be a problem. It was for me so I ended up turning off all the anti-spyware programmes, installing Atlas.ti, then turning back on the anti-spyware programmes.
I can’t believe why the majority of computer users put up with such a crappy OS system! At least the Mac is my primary OS.

Also I really can't agree with you, when I run those
anti-spyware programs (about once a month) it usually
doesn't find ANY infections. Do you use Internet
Explorer by any chance? The infection rate with that
browser is significantly higher than with others
(Firefox, Opera, etc).
Yes, one of the problems was running Internet Explorer.
For any Mac user who is just using Windows for the first time, it is intuitive to use the built-in Internet Explorer browser, right? I mean, it should NOT be the problem of the user to determine that using Internet Explorer is a problem. But unfortunately, IE is a problem. Nevertheless, that's a backwards approach which seems a very Windows-centric way of doing things. Can't blame the user for not knowing and using Internet Explorer.
What I've resorted to now is running Internet Explorer only for Windows updates and other Microsoft websites that require it. Everything else I use Opera or Firefox.
By the way, an interesting new service from Microsoft is:

    Hi There
Can the Mac Pro run Window XP (booth camp) and be used as a MAc OS server in the same time?
I am a small business and I was thinking of using the new mac pro for a new workstation on my studio and to also use it as a server for 5 work others stations. Is that possible? Or I am asking a bit to much work load to do for the Mac Pro?
Can the Mac Pro can run under Window XP and Autocad and still be accessed by other workstation whilst working on the cad software? Is booth camp will slow the machine like Virtual PC?
IS the MAc Pro can manage file hosting website with PHP and mySQL capabilites?

  • Can not get mac to run Windows Virtual PC

I tried to download VM 7 but I cannot get it to load. It says that I have downloaded it earlier today. I tried but was unsuccessful at downloading it. Is there any way of finding it with Finder so I can uninstall it?

    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
    1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
    2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    3. VM Fusionand Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows.  The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
    5. VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.  It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • Mac Pro Running Windows XP in Bootcamp with AIM 6.5 Can't Connect to iChat

I'm running Windows XP on my Mac Pro under Bootcamp. The Windows firewall is turned off (I'm running McAfee, and using it's firewall).
I am trying to talk to a friend who is using iChat on a Mac - I am using AIM 6.5 on my Mac running Windows. The connection fails as soon as iChat attempts to answer.
    Mac OS 10.4.10
    Bootcamp 1.4 (beta)
    Windows XP
    McAfee 7.2
    iChat 3.1.8
    Airport Express
I have set up McAfee to allow TCP and UDP connections over ports 2869 (TCP) and 1900 (UDP).
I have also disabled McAfee, and tried to use the Windows firewall settings discussed frequently in this forum (with appropriate exceptions). This also fails.
I have also tried to doing this under my Mac OS X bootup running PARALLELS. This worked once, but I have not been able to repeat it (McAfee was running when it worked).
iChat works great on my Mac under OS X. This is only a problem in Windows XP under Bootcamp.
I cannot connect to appleu3test01 either (under Bootcamp with XP). I can connect to appleu3test01 no problem running iChat on my Mac.
Might this be a Bootcamp related problem? Can anyone else test this for me (i.e. can someone try to use AIM 6.5 from Windows XP under Bootcamp)???
    Thanks!

    Hi Ralph,
{quote}If the Firewall was On I would ask if you had set it up as an Exception
    http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page12.html#_Service{quote}
Yes, this is what I meant by,
    {quote}I have also disabled McAfee, and tried to use the Windows firewall settings discussed frequently in this forum (with appropriate exceptions). This also fails.{quote}
I've noticed that you've posted solutions frequently in this forum. I read your posts, and visited your website. Its great information ... thanks for posting it! However, it didn't help me to resolve this particular problem.
    You asked,
    {quote}The question now becomes have you allowed it through McAfee ?{quote}
I tried resolving the problem with McAfee "ON" and "OFF". When it was "OFF" I Set the Windows firewall up per your instructions. Unfortunately, it didn't help. And yes, this includes setting up the "exceptions."
I don't think the problem is with McAfee.
    You stated,
    {quote}Having said that and seeing you have tried combos around this issue I would have to point out the AIM site says AIM 6.5 will only Video with other AIM applications. It has been reported here though that it does work with iChat{quote}
Yes, I have read that AIM 6.5 will communicate with iChat on several forums. Lots of people appear to have this working. I wish to use iChat on my Mac to communicate with friends running Windows XP (or Vista) using AIM 6.5. I like iChat.
    Finally, you asked,
    {quote}Next I would have to ask if the modem or router is allowing the AIM application ?{quote}
This is a very good question. I have not been able to test this. I couldn't find an AIM "test" address to use (like Apple's appleu3test01). Any suggestions?
Thanks for your help Ralph. This configuration is a little bit unusual, but it should work. I think the problem might be with the AIM configuration as you've suggested. I will continue to troubleshoot and report any findings here.

I have just got a new (secondhand for a mate) iPod Classic and it has arrived already loaded with music and TBH I would like to keep it (over 5000 tracks) but the problems is when I plug it into my iTunes account it wants to clear all the music, it is set in a Mac format and I'm running my account through Windows.
question is "Can I convert all the music from a Mac format into Windows and not lose all the music?

  • Word for Mac and Boot Camp, can I run Word for Mac while running Windows?

    Hi There :
I just installed windows xp on my mac book pro. I have Word for Mac already installed. Is there any way by which I can use this Word software while I am running Windows.
    Thanks a lot

You'd need to install a virtualization product, such as VMware Fusion or Parallels Desktop for Mac. This way, you'd be running Windows alongside Mac OS X. I use VMware Fusion and recommend it. For resource-intensive applications, I boot natively into Windows, but I generally use the virtual machine for convenience sake.

  • Is it possible to do an image file restore in a Mac Mini running Windows 7 in Parallels?

I recently purchased my first Mac, a Mac Mini.  It will have Windows 7 installed with Parallels.  I will probably sell my current Dell laptop Ebay prior to receiving my Mac, and have done a complete data and image file backup to an external drive.  My question is, when I am in Windows 7 on my Mac, will I be able to utilize Windows Restore to load my .iso image from my external drive?   I'd like to have it looking just like what I had on my old Windows machine.  I will have the 1TB fusion drive on my Mac, so space isn't an issue.  My goal is to eventually migrate most of my files and data over to the Mac OS, after which I will only keep a few programs such as Office 2013 in Windows.   Will I have to resize my Windows partition to accomodate this, or will Parallels or Mac OS do this automatically for me?  I'm totally new to the Mac world, so I apologize if these questions have already been answered elsewhere.

Not all virtualization engines are the same.  I would consult with Parallels if that is going to be the one of choice.

  • Partitioning mac mini, running windows xp in one and itunes mac version

i want to be able to operate my work pc (windows XP professional) via vpn I am required by my company to have vpn access to my desk top at work as part of our emergency preparedness policy. I would not use it often. I thought this is a less expensive alternative to buying a pc. the other use i want is to load itunes onto the other partition. operate it via wifi from my iMac across the room so i can place it near my 1080HD sony bravia52xbr3, to connect the itunes visualizer to the tv via hdmi-dvi or does anybody have real knowledge about the feasability of my plan?
imac G5 1.8mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   wireless keyboard and mouse

You don't mention if your mini is an intel or ppc based mini. If you have an intel machine, you can use BootCamp to easily repartition your mini's drive and create a FAT32 or NTFS partition to install WinXP. You need a full install disk with at least SP2 (refer to the boot camp requirements here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/ ). If you have a PPC based mini, well....you could find a copy of VirtualPC and install it but the performance is dismal.
As far as the iTunes issue goes, I'm no guru for iTunes, but I don't think you can set up the mini to act like an airport express. You can share music library's but to actually control the mini, you would probably need something like Apple Remote Desktop or Timbuktu. I have my old PPC mini connected to my HDTV and audio system and control it via Timbuktu from my main desktop in my ome office. The main computer has sharing enabled and I simply control the mini to start playing the shared library over the wireless network.

  • Mac user in Windows instuttion needs help

I am being denied IMAP for my .mac mail by the syst. adm. and firewall provider. I think they are blowing me off but my tech understanding on this matter is lacking in order to defend my case. Please read the email exchange below and provide a counter argument so I can get my mail up and running. The essence of their argument is that to open IMAP would be a major security breech. I feel there is always a solution in these matters but its the resistance to have to do some extra work that is standing in the way:

    Hi Mazen
    Dear Mazen,
Is he saying he will not accomodate me becasue I am on a apple desktop and
    not
a school PC going through that mail server? If so, is there a way to
    route my
computer through the Mail Server he is willing to open IMAP for?
    Hi Todd,
No that's not the case. I'll try to explain it. The computer you are using
has an internal fake ip, which we reroute thru our ISA server. The ISA
server then using a real ip will route the request to the ISP thru the
    Firewall and Router.
Same for e-mail the E-mail server using a real ip communicates with the
outside thru the firewall then the router. SMTP and POP3 ports are open on
the tunnel between our mail server and our provider. that tunnel is secure
because we only accept mail coming thru our ISP's ip using pop3 and smtp
ports. all other traffic is denied.
In your case, what has to be done is the following, open access to IMAP from
any external web ip to the internal school network. And that is very
dangerous, because it allows anyone on the net to use that open port to hack
    into the school.
    Mazen
We can open the IMAP port on the Mail Server only. We cannot open the
IMAP port on a Public internal IP from any Private IP. This will cause
    a major security breach.

This is a security issue and the private network policy is one you will most likely have to live with. That being said I don't see this as a "major security breach" since IMAP is a well defined protocol. Since in your post I see they use a "PIX Firewall" which is made by Cisco I can tell you if they want they can safely allow IMAP. These babies can do just about anything when it comes to firewalling. To the point I use one and I have setup SPI or Stateful Packet Inspection. Without getting to geeky on you, you could forward this link and excerpts from the file to the PIX admin. Basically the firewall blocks inbound requests and tracks outbound requests and ONLY lets connections started from the private network to come through the firewall. I'll bet they do this with HTTP so they can do it for IMAP.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/customer/products/sw/secursw/ps1018/productsimplementation_designguide09186a00800fd670.html
    Stateful Packet Inspection
"SPI monitors connections from a secured network to an unsecured network, and anticipates the traffic returning to the secure host from the unsecure network. The mechanism for anticipating and allowing the return traffic changed slightly as Cisco IOS Firewall changed from CBAC to SPI.
Configure the inspection policy for the protocols listed in the network use policy. Every protocol that will be allowed through the firewall must be specifically named. If you wish to allow additional services, add the services to the inspection policy. If you set up Cisco IOS Stateful Inspection and find that one of your network applications that must traverse the firewall stops working, you should consult the product's documentation or knowledgebase and determine if the software vendor offers documentation specific to setting up a Cisco IOS Firewall.
    Define the inspection set:
    ip inspect name myfw http
    ip inspect name myfw https
    ip inspect name myfw pop3
    ip inspect name myfw esmtp
    ip inspect name myfw imap
    ip inspect name myfw ssh
    ip inspect name myfw dns
    ip inspect name myfw ftp
    ip inspect name myfw icmp"
If all else fails and they refuse your request to create SPI for the IMAP protocol you can do 2 things to get your .mac mail.
    1. Have them setup a local e-mail account on there mail server. They may have already done this for all students. Then follow the link below and set .mac to forward all your mail to your student e-mail account. You can leave these e-mails in the .mac account so when your not at school you can get to them. Then use Mail.app to get your mail from the schools server.
    http://help.apple.com/mac2/1/help/mail/pgs/mac25.html
    2. Use the .mac webmail from the Apple website. Just login and you can get your mail on any PC or Macs web browser.
