Mac versus PC - which is best value for photoshop?

Hi my background is as a Graphic Designer (accustomed to using macs). However I recently decided to go freelance as an illustrator/graphic artist. I paint in photoshop using texture brushes and also scan in my drawings. The work i do crunches alot of memory and i'm looking to get a new mac pro or a pc to allow me to work as my imac is having a heartattack every time i use a brush. Initially i was looking to get a mac as this is what i am used to but looking at the prices of the memory it seems to cost more than the mac itself  , and for my heavy photoshop work i'm gonna need alot of memory.
Are PCs a better option financially or is it best to stick with a mac? I've heard alot of stuff about how PCs are much more prone to viruses, but some people have also told me that the memory is alot cheaper to buy. Does photoshop run ok on PCs?
Anyway I dont have alot of money as i'm just starting out so i don't really want to spend loads on a mac pro if I can get a PC that does the same job for alot less. Does anyone have any clear advice/experience on the subject?

I have had both systems at home for over 15 years, and started out working on pre mac/pc graphics systems so I do not believe to be biased. A big factor in your decision should be is do you already own mac or pc software, and which platform you want to stay on? Photoshop and the creative suite runs fine on the pc and has now for a long time.
The benefits I find of each are:
PC
Cheaper hardware and upgrades (EG: 2nd Internal DVD drive)
Can buy hardware at you local electronic appliance store in case of emergency
A few more software plug-ins and choices
Mac
Less downtime due to virus/mallware
Less hardware problems
Less software problems
Will not need to convert fonts using crossfont for mac clients
Can play DVDs without having to buy third party player.
While the PC has more 3rd party maufacturors which drive prices down, that sometimes is a negative for the PC because hardware does not sync up as seamlessly. You may save money on the PC when initially buying your system, but in the long run you may use up more time trying to clean up viruses and incompatibilities. So they fall pretty equal and the decision really depends on the user and what suits your needs best and whom you will be working with.
Whether you are on pc or mac I encourage checking out the other side, as this adds to your way of thinking and to your arsenal of creative graphics solutions.

  • Best value for optimizer_mode

In my production environment we have to move from Rule based optimizer to cost based optimizer . We work with oracle 10g but until now our application before run queries execute an alter session set optimizer_mode=rule.
What is the best value for this parameter?
    # FIRST_ROWS(n)
    # FIRST_ROWS
    # ALL_ROWS
    # CHOOSE
We don't know what kind of query users will do. Those queries can retrive all rows or a part of the table.

Do you think tha I shoud use stored outlines?
    I have found this :
20.2.1 Moving from RBO to the Query Optimizer
If an application was developed using the rule-based optimizer, then a considerable amount of effort might have gone into manually tuning the SQL statements to optimize performance. You can use plan stability to leverage the effort that has already gone into performance tuning by preserving the behavior of the application when upgrading from rule-based to query optimization.
By creating outlines for an application before switching to query optimization, the plans generated by the rule-based optimizer can be used, while statements generated by newly written applications developed after the switch use query plans. To create and use outlines for an application, use the following process.
    Note:
Carefully read this procedure and consider its implications before executing it!
    1.
Ensure that schemas in which outlines are to be created have the CREATE ANY OUTLINE privilege. For example, from SYS:
GRANT CREATE ANY OUTLINE TO user-name
    2.
Execute syntax similar to the following to designate; for example, the RBOCAT outline category.
    ALTER SESSION SET CREATE_STORED_OUTLINES = rbocat;
    3.
Run the application long enough to capture stored outlines for all important SQL statements.
    4.
    Suspend outline generation:
    ALTER SESSION SET CREATE_STORED_OUTLINES = FALSE;
    5.
Gather statistics with the DBMS_STATS package.
    6.
Alter the parameter OPTIMIZER_MODE to CHOOSE.
    7.
Enter the following syntax to make Oracle use the outlines in category RBOCAT:
    ALTER SESSION SET USE_STORED_OUTLINES = rbocat;
    8.
    Run the application.
Subject to the limitations of plan stability, access paths for this application's SQL statements should be unchanged.
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b28274/outlines.htm#i12916
    is it good for performance?
I have never use stored outlines.

There may be a few links in Apple Support, regarding articles about how to use iBooks Author
and iBooks Store, etc; these would be separated into two general categories by device used.
Since there is an iOS and an OS X version of each, you may have to look to see what Apple
Support says about the one you are interested in; and how far their database goes toward an
answer to your question. Otherwise, a general search engine approach may be necessary.
Not sure if anything along the lines of what you seek would be available in an App.
References to iBooks Author and iBooks Store, etc appear within these two categories in Support:

of iBooks you are interested in, have similar questions or answers by others who'd visited previously.

  • What is the best laptop for Photoshop Elements 10 ?

I have HP Pavilion g6 Notebook,i5-245M 2.5GHZ, 4 GB mwmory, 64-bit Operating system window 7, Radeon Graphics, Eidtior not working , I get error message ( Unable to continue because of hardware or system error,Sorry, but this error in unercoverable).
So I want to give this one to my son, and I want to bay new One for me,
but i do not want to have same Error with my new Laptop,
So any one know what is the best Laptop for PhotoShop Elements 10 ?
    Thanks for Helping me .

I would suggest a machine with a multi-core processor and plenty of storage as photo files take up quite a lot of room over time. Many laptops have a screen resolution of 1366 x 768 and whilst elements will run OK some menu functionality will be missing if the display is not at least 800 pixels in height. A resolution of 1600 x 900 would be much better.

Adobe Creative Cloud - has anybody had any luck running Adobe CC on a new mac mini? Does it run slow for Photoshop?

Adobe CC applications are very large and the base Mac mini isn't a good choice because it has only 4GB of RAM and has a slow standard hard drive. To get the most out of ACC you should upgrade the mini to at least 8GB. I'd also choose an SSD or Fusion drive for better performance.

  • Best Monitor for Photoshop??

    Hi,
I was wondering if anyone can suggest what the best monitors for photoshop digital painting/editing etc are at the moment??
I still use a crt as I've heard years ago that their colour depth were alot better than lcd's or tft's that were around then. I'd assume that's no longer the case. Can someone please suggest what the best monitors currently are?
I'm also considering using a 42 inch Pioneer PDP 4280XD full HD 1080P flatscreen Television as a monitor. Would anyone know how that would work in compared to a good quality monitor?
Thanks for any help in advance!

A 42" TV is not a good solution, innacurate colors, huge pixels.
Get a LCD, with a IPS or a MVA or PVA panel, with LED backlighting if you can afford it.
The 22" are usually TN  change color according to the angle of vision, and dither some colors. They are cheaper, but not a good choice (you said "best"
Lots of users go for  24" Dells, for the price and quality.
I use two 24" when I can, with one portrait, the other landscape. Useful when one uses bridge to keyword pictures, or simply to review photos the way they were shot.
Top of the crop are Eizo, NEC.
There are places with comparative tests...

It is certainly not a virus. There are none.
    Try the basic troubleshooting steps.

Sometimes all that is required is to restart the iPhone.
The final step is to restore it. Always back up your iPhone first.

I don't wanna to use Crystal report or JASPER report.
can i do with ( displaytags ) if yes...
    provides me help on that.
    thanks...
it should be easy to learn and good GUI o/p or formatting .

Sure. You can work with the Display tag library. But framework like Eclipse BIRT (the open source Eclipse-based reporting system) gives you an easy life. Maybe you want to watch the movies for an demonstration, e.x. http://download.eclipse.org/birt/downloads/examples/reports/2.1/tutorial/tutorial.html.

  • Best Mouse for Photoshop

    Hello,
New to this forum.  I appologize if Im not in the correct area, please point me.  Wondering if anyone knew which mouse is best for Photoshop. ie: using magnetic lasso, fine touch up/restoration work etc ?
I have a tablet but my hand shake to much to use it anymore.  So I need a replacement for it.  I used to use a trackball on my pc some time ago but now I use a Macbook pro laptop.
I appreciate any suggestions on mice and I thank you now in advance for your expertise.
    Sunny

    Hi.
I second Mylenium's emotion. I've been using Logitech programmable mice for 10 years. Currently I'm using the MX Revolution (wireless). Still working after 5 years of heavy use. My previous Logitech mouse was still working fine after 6 years, but didn't like Vista when I got a new computer.
I have big hands, and the MX is a good fit. Righties only, sadly. It's big, heavy, and stable. It has a built in rechargeable battery, which I was leery of at first. But the battery last a long, long time, and it has never been an issue. It recharges in a cradle, and fast, which is good.
It's programmable, the most important feature to me. It has more programmable toggles and buttons than I use, but the ones I do use are golden. In addition to the normal mouse functions in their normal places, I have Shft, Ctrl, & Enter under my index finger. My thumb accesses Alt, Ctrl+Alt, & Ctrl+Alt+Shft under my thumb. The result being my right hand never leaves the mouse, and my left hand works the keyboard. It's fast and efficient, even when I don't know where I'm going. If that sounds too geeky, just program couple of buttons. The new MX is still $100 and is supposed to work with Mac OS® X 10.4 or later.
I know some folks like to keep it simple. Even if you don't program it, it's still a big, heavy, comfortable mouse with great performance.
A critical element in my mousing nirvana is the gel filled wrist pad. It reduces fatigue and the chance of carpel tunnel and such. And just as important, it stabilizes my wrist so my hand movements are more sure. The speed of the mouse is a factor too. My mouse is set to "Fast", with moderate "Acceleration". This way I can reach the whole screen without moving my wrist or lifting the mouse. Saves time and fatigue. And of course a good chair set at the right height and the desk at the right height help.
    FWIW.
    Peace,
    Lee

  • Best processor for Photoshop

I'm buying a new system running Windows 7, 64-bit. Does CS3 take advantage of the triple memory channel on the i7-9xx series? The turbo on the i7-8xx is apparently much better, but it's only dual channel memory.
I am generally processing dng files that have gone through DXO Optics Pro (very big)

Guru3D isn't the best source for SSD reviews, they just used synthetic benchmarks. They dedicated only half a page to real world performance which they didn't bother to test thoroughly.
I've seen very few reviews showing performance gain from running SSD's as scratch disks and they all looked shady to me (wouldn't put it past them to run their tests only one time). Sure, SSD's have gotten faster than traditional drives (as long as you stay away from JMicron controllers) but how visible is that performance difference in Photoshop?
Then there's also the workload, how hard is Photoshop hitting the HDD's while you're doing your job? i doubt that you'll see much improvement if most of the work is carried out in ram. Without any reliable benchmarks i can only guess but my guess is that it's not worth buying an SSD unless you already have 12gb of ram and still see the HDD activity LED blinking like crazy.

  • Which MacBook Pro Processor for Photoshop and IMovie Projects?

I am a fine art photographer. I use my compuer mostly for Photoshop work. I am now starting to do some video, but nothing too intensive. I am currently using IMovie. I doubt I will ever use finalcut but you never know. So I am planning to get a 15" MBP with Hi-Res screen. the question is which processor? Dpong alot of Photoshop work and a little IMovie, do you think I should get the I7 or should I jsut get the base model? Either way I will max out the ram. thanks
    <Edited by Host>

The CPU isn't as important as you might think. The difference between the slowest and fastest CPU is barely 10% -- and Photoshop should offload a lot of work to the GPU (which is the same, save for the amount of VRAM) for all of them.
Performance-wise, you'd probably do better concerning yourself with the amount of RAM you have installed, and maybe the hard disk speed (best go for the 500G 7200RPM model, or even the 512G sold-state if you can afford it). More RAM and a faster disk will provide greater performance boost than the faster CPU.
