Mac wakes up for Ethernet network administrator access, goes to sleep again

I'm running Mac OS X 10.4.6 on an iMac G5, and the OS is set up such that it presents a login prompt after the Mac is witched on from standby mode. If one does not start to type in a password, the machine goes back into standby mode after a dozen seconds or so, which is helpful e.g. in case I have hit the keyboard by accident.
However, there are situations when I don't want this to happen. For instance, I own a SqueezeBox v5 device, which will wake also the Mac when I turn it on via its remote control (I assume via "Wake for Ethernet network administrator access"). However, since I do type on the Mac keyboard in this case, but use the Squeezebox remote control instead, the Mac decides to turn itself off again. I'm also facing this with utilities that try to wake up my Mac at a certain time to perform their functions (e.g. with Audio Hijack Pro).
So my question is, is there any way to tell Mac OS X not to fall back into standby mode when woken up by another mechanism than normal keyboard typing, via some configuration file or similar. Turning off the keyword prompt entirely is not a tolerable option for me in this case.
Thanks for any help on this,
Christian

The 'wake for ethernet network administrator access' does not mean 'wake on any old ethernet traffic you like'.
In other words you can't just try to hit any service you choose - if the machine is asleep then it doesn't even have an IP address that's going to listen to your hit.
How it works is via a special broadcast protocol sent from another machine on the LAN. The packet is sent to the machine's hardware MAC address (and therefore doesn't need any services to be running on the machine). When the hardware detects the packet it wakes up the machine.
There are a few utilities that will send the relevant packets to wake a machine. Apple Remote Desktop has it, but so do free utilities like WakeOnLAN.

    My new Mac Air continues to disconnect from WiFi after going to sleep.  When waking it up I have to manually re-connect.  How do I keep it connected?

    I had this problem too and solved it by doing a clean install. After that it was gone.
    This is a drastic method since it takes quite some time to reinstall lion and all your software.
    Thoughts I had why it started working after a clean install are the following:
    It looked like the airport wasn't able to reconnect fast enough before the connection timed out. So what could have prevented my mac from being able to connect fast enough?
    Apps that consume processor cycles. I love what I would call 'System Enhancers', little apps that enhance my workflow (Moom, Alfred, Dropbox, Default Folder etc). I'm not saying that these are the problem, they might be programmed processor friendly, but check if you have apps that consume processor cylcles. It might prevent airport from being able to reconnect quickly enough before it times out.
    Mobile Config profiles. Another thought I had was that I had a mobile config 802.1X profile installed for the company were I worked. It used TTLS to connect to the corporate network. This profile might have gotten in the way.
    And a sidenote...
    Routers with hardware acceleration might also be a problem. My router is a Wireless Gigabit Router 300N WL-351 and has hardware acceleration. As soon as I activate that my wifi connection keeps dropping. It is as if a Macbook Air can't handle that amount of optimisation.
    That's it, hope it helps those who are still having the problem.
    Best, Jan

  • No Connect / Answers for gv (Network Administrator)

    To refresh your memory, my 2 PC's are wirelessly perfect now, but my laptop is not networking beyond "seeing" the Router via the "Dell Wireless WLAN Card Utility", and even that continuously shows "Authenticating", and disconnects & reconnects every minute or so.
    Answers to your specific questions below (your paragraph pasted @ bottom in entirety).
    Do the security settings on my router & laptop match?
     WRT54G Router Configuration, Wireless Tab, Basic Wireless Settings Subtab:
    * Wireless Network Mode: G-Only
    * Wireless Network Name (SSID): linksys_SES_46146
    * Wireless Channel: 9
    * Wireless SSID Broadcast: Enable
    * Status: SES Security Parameters Configured
      WRT54G Router Configuration, Wireless Tab, Basic Wireless Security Subtab:
    * Security Mode: WPA Personal
    * WPA Algorithms: TKIP
    * WPA Shared  Key: **************** (my actual key is the same on all)
    * Group Key Renewal: 3600 seconds
     DELL B130 Laptop utilizing the 1470 Dual Band WLAN Mini-PCI Card:
    * Wireless Network setup & managed by: "DELL Wireless WLAN Card Utility".
    * Connection Status: Authenticating (Always - never "Connects or locks on" & breaks regularly).
    * Encription Type: TKIP; Key Absent (I think that means hidden).
    * Network Connection Type: Infrastructure.
    * Speed: 54.0 Mbps
    * Channel: 9
    * AP Mac Address: 00:18:38:FD:21:AF
    * Gateway IP Address: Not available
    * Client Mac Address: 00:14:A5:CC:77:28
    * Client IP Address: 0.0.0.0
    Note: The software reports a strong signal from the WRT54G & even sees a few other weak encrypted signals, but nothing shows in Windows Explorer or My Network Places. It's own diagnostics report the laptop's wireless card is working fine. I have been wanting to take this laptop to a hot spot cafe to test the unprotected wireless connectivity & if that works possibly implicating my security settings on the router.
    Any advice or tips would be much appreciated as I would love to add this laptop to the already successfully networked pair of desktops (the remote desktop PC utilizes the Linksys "Wireless-G" Card & software.
    Thx,
    Wayne K.

    Regarding the wireless connection problem: You should check whether the wireless security settings on the router and on the laptop match. There are different ways for encryption etc. and if the settings don't match you cannot connect properly.
    For this: go to http://192.168.1.1/ and enter the router password (not the wireless network key) which you have chosen during setup. The default password is "admin". You don't have to enter a username. It brings you to the router configuration pages. Go to the wireless tab. There are subtabs for basic wireless setup and wireless security. Please post current settings.
    For the settings on the laptop there are several options how it uses its wireless card: many laptops come with special software for the wireless card which is used to set it up and connect to wireless networks. You have to find out how your software works and where you'll find the settings if this is the case.
    Some laptops simply use the windows built-in functions called Windows Zero Configuration. To check that, you right-click onto the wireless network icon in the tray and select Properties (or Status and then press the Properties button in the status window). Change to the wireless networks tab. The top checkbox should be active, i.e. Windows is configuring your wireless connections. In the bottom half you'll see the list of preferred networks. Select the network with your network name (the SSID from the router configuration above) and press Properties. Post which settings you have currently for your network on the tabs in the window showing up.

    BTW, please stay in the thread next time. It makes things easier to follow.
    O.K. I see a possible issues here:
    - The Dell status does not show which network name you are connecting to. That should be "linksys_SES_46146".
    - I think "Key Absent" rather means there is no key entered.
    - The AP MAC address is strange. The 00:18:38 is not Linksys but a company called PanAccess in china. That does not mean it is not correct but you should verify it: the MAC address of your router should be printed on the label underneath the printer. This should match.

  • Can not connect to one other mac in in-house Ethernet network 10.9.2

    I have a small inhouse ethernet network with 3 Macs
    All mac´s are running under 10.9.2
    On my main mac I see both other macs as approved. When I select the first mac, put in my user ID and password I can connect.
    The other mac will not connect; "connection failed" and I see on the console:
    27.02.14 15:13:38,186 NetAuthSysAgent[243]: RPC to srvsrvc gave error 0x16c9a042
    27.02.14 15:13:38,187 sharingd[212]: SDSharePointBrowser::handleEnumerateCallBack returned -6600
    Up to today both connection were working fine; but today I updated to 10.9.2 - but I am not sure if that coused the problem.
    Has one any suggestion?
    Thanks
    Hans

    In the meantime I have reinstalled OSX 10.9.2; repaired permisions - no effect.
    The settings  on both other macs are the same.
    No suggestions????

  • Mac Pro with Wake on Demand enabled wakes up but never goes to sleep again

    Hey,
    i was using Wake on Lan since OS 10.5 Leopard for waking my Mac up with a Magic Packet. Since 10.6 this brilliant feature was removed and replaced by "wake on demand" wich lets your computer wake up every 2 hours for a few seconds (very ultra annoying if your mac is in the same room as your bed). This is at least how it SHOULD work.. of course it doesn't...
    Everytime i enable Wake on Demand my Mac Pro will wake up but will NOT go to sleep a few seconds later (as it is intended).
    Here is my log:

  • I lose my printer on the network after mini goes to sleep

    After upgrading to Mavericks I started have two issues. One was that my Apple mail wasn't picking up the mail properly from my Gmail account. That issue has since been remedied by an Apple tech. The tech had me delete my account in Mail and delete some files from a system folder and re-create the account in Mail and the issue went away. The second issue is that my printer is lost on the network every time my mini goes to sleep. The printer is a HP P2015dn. I have have it for several years and it works perfectly when I can see it on the network. I have tried connecting directly to the mini via ethernet and the same thing happens. Every time I want to use it I have to delete it from the printer list, restart the printer, it takes several minutes to appear on the printer list again, and printing works works fine until the mini goes to sleep – after waking I get the error  "printer not connected" when i try to print.
    I called Apple and they said to download/install the latest driver for the printer but HP says the latest driver is included in the latest version of Mavericks - which I have. My next stop is the Genius Bar but willing to give this forum a shot first.

    Hi Mark,
    I'd give this a try...
    Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.5, 10.6, 10.7 & 10.8…
    System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x/10.8.x instructions...
    System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
    The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
    If using Wifi/Airport...
    Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

  • MAC loses IP address on Reboot and when goes into sleep

    We have a couple macs running on a corporate network with a Cisco infrastructure. Windows servers on the back end providing DHCP. Macs are connected to Cisco 3500 or 3700 series switches.
    When the macs go to sleep or stand by mode or even sometimes a reboot they do not grad an IP address or they loose their IP address and just have a 169.x.x.x ip.
    We have to reboot a couple times or wait awhile for an IP to come up.
    We have consulted Cisco and some local Mac dealers and no one seems to know what to do??????

    Hi, and Welcome to the Disscusions robbamann!
    If it's an encrypted network, One thing that can work, try this, please ignore the exact symptoms and connection and Hardware types, it's worked for many others than the stated...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304482
    A workaround might be to use these in Terminal, or write a Script for them...
    sudo ipconfig set en0 BOOTP;sudo ipconfig set en0 DHCP
    sudo ifconfig en1 down;sudo ifconfig en1 up
    Change the en# as appropriate.

  • Wake Desktop Comes Up Then goes to Sleep Again

    50% of the time when I open my MacBook Pro( late 2008 2.4) the desktop appears "briefly" and then screen goes black signifying sleep mode. I have to then tap on space bar to get it to wake up again. This only happens on startup, never, goes to sleep when machine is active.
    This situation did not occur with Leopard OS, only since Snow Leopard has been installed.
    I reset PRAM and VNRAM as per:
    Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
    Shut down the computer.
    Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
    Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
    Reseting PRAM and VNRAM made no difference. I have Apple Care if no one here has a solution I'll give Apple a call.

  • How can I keep my iMac on the wireless network when it goes to sleep?

    I have a new iMac (from Santa) and when it goes to sleep, so does its wifi connection.  I use it for work and need to keep my instant messaging app open and running at all times, even when it's asleep. I also like to have all of my email waiting in the inbox when I come back to the desk.
    Is there any setting (or workaround) I can do to keep it connected even when it goes to sleep? I have a MacBook Pro that keeps its connection when it goes to sleep so can't figure out what's happening. Thanks in advance!

    going to sleep means disabling the network connection to save power
    so what you're asking is not really possible
    unless you can change what going to sleep mean on your computer
    in the power saving settings you may be able to set going to sleep to just turn off your monitor
    because thats pretty much the only thing that can go to sleep if you still wish to use it over wifi

  • Network hard drive going to sleep?

    A small question here! Is a network drives plug into the Airport is going to sleep if it's not used? Is there a setup somewhere where I can set the sleeping time for that network drive?
    Thanks you!
    Nicolas

    It sounds like the drive isn't working. I suggest you return it.

  • HP Officejet 4620 All-in-One Loses Connection to Wireless Network When It Goes Into Sleep Mode

    My HP 4620 All-In-One wireless printer works fine until it goes into sleep mode.  Once it goes into sleep mode, it doesn't wake up if a print job is sent to it.  If I wake it up manually by pressing the blinking on/off button, it still doesn't print.  If I completely turn it off and then on again, the print job that was queued on my computer will start printing, but that's a huge pain and waste of time nearly every time I want to print.  I've installed all available updates.  I also assigned a static IP address in an effort to correct this but nothing helps.  I see that others have complained about this problem, but I do not see that anyone has had success resolving this.  My operating system is Windows Vista.  I use a Link-Sys Wireless G Router.  Thanks.
    This question was solved.

    so I have called HP tech support 12 times over the last 6 weeks and still my HP Officejet 4620 loses connection overnight. Of course becasue it was a birthday present I spent more time than I normally would have on this issue. While the tech are very polite they have not fixed my problem and now it is too late to return printer to store. This is a lot of money wasted and I think they need to admit this is a bug in this printer and resolve the problem!!!!!

  • Satellite P100-113 not setup for ethernet networking

    The laptop was purchased in the UK but is being used in the USA, model PSPA3E. It is running Windows XP Home Edition sp2. We just had high-speed Internet brought to our house and I am trying to get the laptop connected to the Internet via an ethernet connection. There is an ethernet port on the back of the laptop, but when I plug in the ethernet cable it has a green light (on the right) and an amber light (on the left). When I go into "Device Manager" there are 2 network adapters that are displayed (a 1394 Net Adapter and an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection). I do not want to use the wireless (which does work), I want to use the ethernet. Under "Other Devices" there is a yellow question mark and a yellow exclamation point next to "Ethernet Controller."
    1. Is there a ethernet connection on this laptop? I do not see it under "Network Adapters" so perhaps it is on the motherboard?
    2. I went to the Toshiba UK support web site and downloaded the most recent 2 LAN drivers. Do I just need to install the most recent one (lan-20081201075406.zip)?
    All assistance would be appreciated.
    Thank you.
    Ted

    The LAN card in device manager that I click on to install the driver is the "1394 Net Adapter" ?
    Sorry for these basic questions, but I am used to seeing a specific manufacturer under network adapters (like Intel). Is this 1394 Net Adapter the one built into the motherboard?
