  • Once and for all: is video/audio chat from Mac to PC using MSN possible?

I've read all the posts, and all the jabber guides, and Mercury stuff, and it all seems like a huge hassle. I have a friend overseas who uses MSN (like EVERYONE overseas). he has a pc (again, like everyone overseas since Macs are 2x as expensive over there) with a webcam. I have AIM, MSN, and Yahoo accounts. I run Adium, and I can text with him but no vid or audio options are there. so, simply put, why is this so darn difficult? I suppose if we both had skype, that would be one solution. here are my questions:
    - why is there no audio or video in adium? (if there's a post on their site that I should have read, forgive me)
    - why doesn't MSN messenger for the Mac support audio and video?
    - does jabber really allow AV chat using the MSN protocol? (once the 15 or so setup steps are completed)?
    - is there, or will there be, a simple solution to this?
I have many, many friends both in the US and overseas, and all my friends overseas have PCs and MSN and webcams, and I have a very advanced MacBook, and I can't communicate with them the way I should be able to.
thanks! and I apologize if any of this has been covered in other posts, but I wanted to get it all down in one place.

    Hi
i would say use Skype http://www.skype.com/intl/en-gb/download/skype/macosx/
aMSN and Mercury only do video no audio, these are the only 2 progams that do video on the MSN network.

  • Mac i-chat and MSN

    Hello everyone,
I know I'm lazy and this has probably already been answered somewhere in this forum, but I can't be bothered spending ages searching for it. Why is i-Chat not compatible directly with MSN. Let's face it, no really uses ichat in the big wide world. MSN is the standard. Is there a reason why MSN hasn't been updated for Macs to include the audio and video functions that the Windows versions have had for ages? What's the easiest and free way of chatting video/audio with all my friends that use MSN? Any help would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Nick.

I think the real interesting question here is when the heck Microsoft is going to release a new version of MSN for mac?
I mean, how ridiculously old isn't the current version (v. 5.whatever)??
And AMSN is definitely a candidate for the award of "the lousiest GUI ever made". All the windows are scattered everywhere, it's slow, the contents within the windows doesn't seem to follow any particular order... sigh
However, since someone apparently managed to make an application that can actually communicate with PC users of MSN with both text and video, one would think that it shouldn't be too hard for Microsoft to release an official version that does the same thing. But no. They just lack the will of doing so as they just have to see everything from their making-the-computer-industry-into-our-own-little-monopoly point of view.
I tried the Skype beta-version that supports webcam between Mac and PC and it worked pretty nice! However you could tell that it was still a beta as the video window was quite small on the mac, and on the PC some sort of special "video window" had to open up. Hopefully it won't look like that in the final release!
Back to MSN again though... Has anyone heard anything about Microsoft planning to release at least the lowest version of MSN that supports webcam?

  • .Mac account delete and msn in iChat?

    Hello
A while back I created a .Mac account through iChat now I don't use it at all. Is there a way to delete this? Also I was wondering is there any other way besides psi jabber to use msn in iChat? Thanks.

    Hi,
In iChat > Preferences > Accounts highlight the unwanted account then use the - button at the bottom.
    This deletes it from iChat.
The blurb on MobileMe Terms of Use does say that you can notify Apple about having a name deleted at their end. (All @Mac.com things seem to point to MobileMe on this matter)
    However there is no link.
I even asked the Hosts here at Discussions and they said they would look in to it but other than that I got no new information.
So on this front you can delete it from iChat but there seems to be no way to get Apple to delete it.
On the MSN through iChat. There is no way other than using a Third Party App to be able to Register with the required Transport.
Psi is one such Third Party App.
In fact doing a Google search It is the only listed on the first page.
Adium and ProteusX will allow you to set up Jabber, AIM and MSN Buddies in the same list (Multi-Service apps) but only for text Chatting.

  • IMac Mac mail 6.2 - MSN IMAP mail

How do I set up Mac Mail 6.2 on my new iMac with Mountain Lion to use MSN as an IMAP mail account.  I have an iPad 3 and the set up was automatic.

Did you ever solve this long term?
On my MacBook Air, When I click on 'reply' or 'reply  all', the button seems to respond / change colour - but no new message comes up. Nada.
Anyone know how to fix this?
    Thoughts gratefully received!

  • Lost mac what happens with msn messenger history

What happens if you lose your notebook and someone boots your computer and msn? Can they see my message history. For that matter can anyone seee my messages on a shared computer?

    Hi Winston!
If you've set your Mac to automatically log in to your computer account and then set Messenger to automatically log in at login, yes, whoever has access to your Mac will see everything.
Your message history is stored locally on your computer. If you've chosen to automatically save all message conversations without asking then everything is there to see. But since your history is stored locally on your computer (not on the Live servers) no one else will be able to see your messages.
This group in Microsoft's forums is dedicated to Messenger for Mac, which is a Microsoft product and not an Apple product. <http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.mac.messenger> You'll probably get more informative responses there rather than this one, which is dedicated to Mac and Windows compatibility issues.
    Hope this helps! bill

MSN Messenger comes free unless Microsoft changes that in the future. As for other software, what software exactly are you talking about? The reason I ask is that most commercial software, like Microsoft Office, needs to be paid for whether on a PC or Mac so I can't see what the difference is.

  • Is it possible to use iSight with Messenger for Mac?

I have been racking my brain on how to get iSight to work with my friends on Window messenger. The video option is not available. I've had my macbook for 2 months now and, after working/giving up and going back again cannot seem to get it to jive. Any ideas would be appreciated!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, flowerlove
The answer here will depend on the specifics of what you want to do.
Both Microsoft Messenger for Mac and the older MSN Messenger for Mac are text only apps. You can not use iSight with either. Please let us know if you mean some different "Messenger" software.
This Windows Messenger does not appear to offer video, even for PCs. If this is the application your friends are using, no video work with it.
For a built-in iSight video connection with PC contacts who only connect via Windows Live Messenger or other clients of the MSN Messenger server, you can select from these alternatives:
    (1) Because your MacBook can use Boot Camp or Parallels to run Windows XP software on your MacBook, you can choose which method you want to use, add the required software (if you have not already done so), and then install and use the same Windows instant messenger application that your contacts are using to do video.
    (2) and (3) In addition to Niel's good "aMSN" suggestion, you can also try Mercury Messenger for Mac. Either can work with OS X for video and text chat. They offer the same features, but neither offers audio connections.  Use whichever one of these two you find more reliable or easiest to use if you do not want to add Windows XP to your iNtel Mac,.

  • Adium won't pick up MSN

So for about 2 weeks I've been unable to get on MSN:mac or use my msn account on Adium. It is continuously saying that I'm not connected to the internet or the service is unavailable.
I have gone into System Preferences>Network and allowed incoming connections for Adium as well as MSN.
    Still no luck.
    I also uninstalled Peer Guardian.
I've tried everything I can think of.
I'm still new to my mac, so perhaps there is still something that is blocking msn connections. I'm not totally sure.
    Help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks so much.

Have you tried connecting while using a different internet connection, such as wifi at a school?

  • Thinking about making the switch

Hello, my name is Bryce. I purchased an HP Pavilion tx 1000 Tablet PC about 8 months ago, and while I love the model, I've been very unhappy with Vista, and with the HP tech support policy. Recently, I've learned of a widespread problem with the motherboard used in my laptop's model - this issue is well documented online but not recognized by HP, and I'm beginning to see the symptoms in my laptop (the failure progresses from a wifi card failure to a motherboard failure, apparently caused by the use of bad materials in the NVIDIA motherboard/HP overclocking of the AMD processor to sell it off as a more powerful machine). At the moment I am hoping that my now-updated BIOS and the new wifi card HP is sending me will tide me over, but I fear that the issue is worse and I'll be stuck dealing with this for awhile.
So, I have been thinking about switching over to Mac. I used to have a G3 iBook (back when they were new), and I was quite unhappy with it. I'm hoping that I can get some feedback regarding the following questions. My budget is around 2,500 dollars.
1.) Generally, when I'm on a computer it's to use Microsoft Office, IRC, AIM/MSN/YIM, HTML/CSS editors, Gimp and web surfing. I occasionally play computer games, but nothing too high end. What Mac laptop would best be suited for me? Does Mac sell Microsoft Office 07 pre-installed? How expensive would that be? What IRC clients are available for Mac? What AIM/MSN/YIM clients? HTML and CSS editors? Does Gimp run on Mac?
2.) What's the latest Mac OS? Is it a real resource hog?
3.) How much does a full accidental damage warranty for a Mac cost? Can Mac tech support be contacted online?
4.) I'm sick of NVIDIA components. I've just had too many problems with them in my life. Are NVIDIA chips used in Macs?
5.) Is WiFi standard on Mac laptops these days? When I bought my G3 iBook, I had to buy the Airport Exterme card separately. Additionally, I regularly reside in locations with weak WiFi signals. Which Airport card would be best for long range/weak signal detection? Is bluetooth and ethernet standard on Macs?
6.) I am often on the move, and dragging my laptop with me. How sturdy are Mac laptops? Which laptops will scratch easily, and which are more stolid? How much would a good, sturdy laptop case go for?
7.) Are webcams/microphones standard on Macs? One of my favorite things about my current laptop is the plethora of USB/headphone ports. How many can I get on a Mac?
8.) How is the Mac networking software?
9.) What type of anti-theft systems can I get for a Mac? Lo-jack?
10.) I use my laptop 8-10 hours a day. I need whatever computer I have to run relatively quiet and relatively cool. How are Mac cooling systems?
11.) I'm on the move a lot. I need a computer that can go to sleep and wake up quickly. How fast can a Mac wake up from sleep mode?
12.) Are most of the Mac laptop ports on the sides of the laptop, or the back?
    Thanks for your time.
    EDIT:
13.) I've used my iPod Mini (It's ancient, I know) on Windows. Can it be converted to Mac? It's a sentimental item so I'd rather not retire it (Engraved for my graduation).

I don't think the Mac will help you much with hardware failures. While Apple's failure rate is half that of PCs, the overall failure rate is still pretty low. If the failure is with some 3rd party product, such as a video card, the problem will affect any machine that uses said card - HPs and Macs.
Mac hardware quality is statistically twice as good as PCs, and there is documentation for this. All the other aspects of the hardware - style, ease-of-use, etc is much better than that of PCs -but that is a purely subjective opinion

That iBook was one of the few machines that had serious quality problems. Still, mine ran with no problems for 4 years. It was a nightmare to take apart though. You can buy quite a bit with $ 2500.
1.) Generally, when I'm on a computer it's to use Microsoft Office, IRC, AIM/MSN/YIM, HTML/CSS editors, Gimp and web surfing. I occasionally play computer games, but nothing too high end. What Mac laptop would best be suited for me?
The most expensive one you can afford. Macbooks can play games and do video, but it really heats up the CPU and the fans get quite loud. Macbook Pros are more powerful but seem to have more quality and software problems. (I can't verify this as I don't have one - I'm just repeating what I read here - a place known to be inaccurate).
Does Mac sell Microsoft Office 07 pre-installed? How expensive would that be?
I don't think you can get it pre-installed. Apple reserves that for Apple products. However, it is now quite cheap (barely $100) and very easy to install. Office 2008 is a .0 product and has some flakiness, but at least doesn't use the "ribbon". I like it.
What IRC clients are available for Mac?
    No clue.
    What AIM/MSN/YIM clients?
iChat is the best as it also does video. Adium will work with just about any protocol out there, but no video.
    HTML and CSS editors?
Only a couple of hundred. Personally, I don't like my editors to do too much and get in my way. I actually do my web sites in Xcode and Safari. You'll have to find out which one you like the best.
    Does Gimp run on Mac?
Yes, but why would you want to? I am an admitted anti-Adobe bigot, but I have to admit that Photoshop Elements put Gimp, Pixelmator, and all the other tools to shame. I use Corel Painter for some things that Elements can't do. I use Preview and PDF Clerk Pro for a few things that are outside Element's realm of image expertise.
2.) What's the latest Mac OS? Is it a real resource hog?
10.5.5. Yes, in objective terms, no, in relative terms. 2 GB RAM is the minimum. 4 would be better. RAM it cheap so don't skimp on it.
3.) How much does a full accidental damage warranty for a Mac cost?
I don't know about accidental damage. I know that is explicitly excluded from AppleCare.
Can Mac tech support be contacted online?
Don't know - never needed it in 20 years of owning Macs. I guess that might be a factor in deciding whether to switch.
4.) I'm sick of NVIDIA components. I've just had too many problems with them in my life. Are NVIDIA chips used in Macs?
NVIDIA is the graphics card for Macbook Pros. You might want to consider a Macbook or Macbook air. You will either 1) save lots of money or 2) be really stylish and cool. Either way you don't want to play too many games.
3rd party video has never been well supported on Macs. You might be able to get a different card for a Macbook Pro. Good luck.
5.) Is WiFi standard on Mac laptops these days?
    Yes.
Which Airport card would be best for long range/weak signal detection?
It doesn't matter as you have no choice about that. Welcome to Apple. If you had to, you could get an external wifi adapter with maybe a range booster. If you have a Macbook Pro, you can use some wifi cards, but not all.
Is bluetooth and ethernet standard on Macs?
Yes, but only turn bluetooth on when you need it as it will make the Mac a little flaky.
6.) I am often on the move, and dragging my laptop with me. How sturdy are Mac laptops? Which laptops will scratch easily, and which are more stolid?
They seem more sturdy that the plastic PCs. The Macbooks are still plastic so they can get scratched and broken. But there are far fewer little plastic pieces, flaps, and doors to break than on a standard PC. The Air and Pro are both metal.
How much would a good, sturdy laptop case go for?
    Same as in town.
7.) Are webcams/microphones standard on Macs?
    Yes - built-in.
One of my favorite things about my current laptop is the plethora of USB/headphone ports. How many can I get on a Mac?
How many headphone ports do you need? My Macbook only has two USB ports, but they are both powered.
8.) How is the Mac networking software?
As Apple makes both computers, cards, and hubs, they focus on Apple equipment working correctly with Apple equipment. For everything else they just code to the published standards and hope the 3rd parties do the same. Many 3rd parties don't do the same and only test with their own cards running XP. Consequently, Mac wireless isn't going to be as reliable as PCs. Whose fault that is should be discussed elsewhere.
9.) What type of anti-theft systems can I get for a Mac? Lo-jack?
Same as in town. You would be wasting your money. Nobody ever gets their stuff back.
10.) I use my laptop 8-10 hours a day. I need whatever computer I have to run relatively quiet and relatively cool. How are Mac cooling systems?
Very good at dissipating excessive CPU heat onto your lap. A Macbook Pro might be better for that. Macbooks run hot and loud when you push them.
11.) I'm on the move a lot. I need a computer that can go to sleep and wake up quickly. How fast can a Mac wake up from sleep mode?
    2-3 seconds?
12.) Are most of the Mac laptop ports on the sides of the laptop, or the back?
On my Macbook, all the ports are on the left. The CD is on the right.
13.) I've used my iPod Mini (It's ancient, I know) on Windows. Can it be converted to Mac? It's a sentimental item so I'd rather not retire it (Engraved for my graduation).
I don't see why not. It might be additional work to move your purchased music over to the Mac. The iPod will be easy.

  • Change of email?

    OK here is my problem
I use a .mac membership for my login to the itunes store, but i dont use that .mac account for email at all....how can i change my email address to my gmail account so that all itunes notifications go there instead of to the .mac one??

thanks for the response Mike, unfortunately it doesn't solve my problem....you see i dont use the .mac at all anymore, but i still have the .mac ID for my MSN messanger and my itunes ID (even though i no longer use .mac)
So...can i somehow change in itunes to send notifications to my gmail rather than .mac??

  • New mail sound, but no new mail appearing in inbox or junk

I've seen this question a few times with anwers, but so far, the answers have not been able to solve my problem.
    Here's what I've done:
    1. unchecked the box to signal when any action in the mailbox takes place.
    2. I moved the messagerules.plist and messagerules.plist.bkup to my desktop and reset the junk filtering, but the new message sound continues to play when no new messages are present.
I am porting the mail to mac mail from an MSN account, could that have something to do with it?
I have never set any rules, but only accepted the standard filtering. I have no custom rules.
    Any other ideas?

    Hi tcass. You’re welcome.
Thanks for the clarifications. Yes, you’re using a plug-in to access this account, and it’s the plug-in that does all the grunt work. Mail is a standard POP & IMAP client that knows nothing about other types of accounts.
At this point, I’m not positive I’ll be able to figure out what’s going on here, but let’s look at the contents of your Mail folder in case there is something amiss there.
Report the names of the files and folders present at the first level of the ~/Library/Mail/ folder in the Finder.
In order to post the exact file names and avoid typing mistakes, proceed as follows. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. With that folder open, if you’re looking at it in View > as List mode, first collapse any expanded folders so that the Finder only shows the files and folders at the first level of ~/Library/Mail/. Now, do Edit > Select All (⌘A), then Edit > Copy (⌘C), and paste it in your reply to this post.
Before actually posting that information, edit it so that the file/folder names do not reveal any details you should keep private, e.g. replace any real username with “username” to hide your real email address. Try to be consistent in how you disguise those details, though, as we may need to refer to them in subsequent posts.
Report also the names of the files and folders present at the first level of the ~/Library/Mail/HTTPMail-username@mailserver/ (or something like that) account folder.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.
