Mac weird behaviour after wrong switch off.

A few days ago I inadvertently switched off my Mac OS 10.6.8 by using the back on/off button instead of file/ shut down. Since then, random changes keeps happening: as soon as I switched it back on the desktop image had reverted to the original, then a few application seems to have disappeared, and today PhotoBooth no longer has the Video function but only Camera.
As anyone any idea what is going on?
Cristina

FWIW, you cannot repair the disk you are booted from, so in order to run the repair disk function you will need to be booted from another source (either an external bootable clone or the recovery partition).
Afterthought: if you are on 10.6.8, there is no recovery partition, so you'd need to boot from an external source.
You can easily repair permissions while booted from the startup disk/hard drive.

  • HT1766 My Iphone 4s dont open up after i switched off it. when i open it it is stuck in the apple logo mode. I cannot switch it on again. is their any way to backup my photos since i cannot switch on my phone?

My iphone 4s dont open up after I switch off it. When I click the switch on button it blinks the apple logo in the black background. Is there anyway that i can backup my photos since I cannot open my phone?

    Hello Ganewee,
Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.  It is certainly impossible to use your iPhone if it won't power on.  I found some steps that can help with an issue like this:
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIs and corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 15 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
You can find the full article here:
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802
If you get to step 6 where you have to restore your iPhone and your iPhone is recognized in iTunes, I would try backing it up before going through the restore.  You can find steps to backup your iPhone here:
    iOS: How to back up
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
    I hope this helps!
    Best,
    Sheila M.

Just turn notes syncing back on again.

  • After upgrading to OSX 10.9.4 on my Mac the WiFi card is switched off and I can't turn it back on. Have tried System Prefers

No WiFi after software upgrade to OSX 10.9.4. Card is switched off and I can't turn it back on.

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.4 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.4 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo).

  • Click wheel still clicks after iPod  switches off!

    Hi
is it normal that the Clickwheel still makes clicking noises (if touching) after i switched the iPod (5g) off.
I also own a Ipod nano, where this does not happen!

Does it do this after it has been off for 10 minutes?
Also, the iPod doesn't completely turn off for 36 hours.

  • Mac Pro FireWire does not switch off even when Mac Pro is switched off

    Hi,
got my new Mac Pro with 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon last week!
Found out today, that the firewire connection both on the frontside as well on the backside
keeps beeing powered even if the Mac Pro is switched off!
Is this a new features as my old Mac Pro (2x2.0 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon) did not have this feature?
If yes, why is this so? For what is it good for?
Thanks for your comments? If you have the same new Mac Pro maybe you can check out and let me know if this feature is also on your Mac Pro seen.
    Thommy

    Hi,
called to the apple hotline and got informed that the so called "residual current" is normal at the MAC Pro. Sometimes the USB Ports sometimes the FireWire Ports keep been powered continously even the machine is switched off.
Apple told me further that I can use a connection plug board with a central switch to solve my issue.
I will close now the subject! Thanks veryone for all your help here!

  • [SOLVED] Weird behaviour after formatting USB installation media

Hi, I have noticed this weird behaviour with USB drives I used to install Arch linux with.  I format them using fdisk and mkntfs but after replugging them in, the udevil daemon mounts them again as ARCH_2013...[something] and even the directory tree exists!  This happens also when I use mkntfs without the -f flag (initializing with zeros).  I also checked the other files in /dev/sd* in order to make sure that my drive does not appear twice, but there is only sda (my HD) and sdd (or sometimes sdb, sdc,...) which must be the USB drive, also according to dmesg.
    Any ideas?
EDIT: I wrote something about not seeing any files when manually mounting but that was my bad, I only tried mounting /dev/sdb1 but mounting /dev/sdb brought me the same files as devmon showed.

I am assuming you used dd to write the image to the disk. You can use it to remove the contents of the disk as well.
You should make use of the arch wiki, it is quite helpful.
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/US … tion_Media
You can use this to zero out the entire device:
    # dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdx bs=8M // x is the letter assigned to the usb drive. Be careful, The dd command is destructive.
It may take a while to zero out the entire disk, depending on the size. After that use fdisk/cfdisk or gdisk/cgdisk to create the partition table and partition.
To create the filesystem type, this one, ext4:
    # mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdx // or create a vfat
    then create the label:
    # e2label /dev/sdx1 USB_STICK_LABEL
Use my suggestion as a last resort. Read the wiki, most of what I have said is in there anyway.

  • MPB + 24" LED, weird behaviour after disconnect

When using my MPB in combination with my 24"LED (single screen setup), everything works perfectly. When I disconnect, the resolution drops to the maximum resolution of my MPB. This drop in resolution results in weird behaviour of application windows, expose (corner activation) and spaces.
Expose does not work anymore, seems like it still thinks there is a larger resolution, so putting my mouse pointer in the corner will not activate expose or any other corner function.
Spaces does not slide anymore, again it seems like it expects a larger desktop to slide which is not there anymore. The display flashes and skips to the next desktop.
Windows can not be resized because the sizing corner (lower right) is outside of the current screen area. So to be able to resize my applications, I have to resize them to small before I disconnect the 24"LED screen.
    Solutions tried:
    1) System preferences > Displays > Detect displays... Does not work
    2) System preferences > Displays > Lower resolution > Normal (max) resolution : Works like a charm
    3) Logout > Login : Also works
Does anyone else know how to make this work the way it should? So far it seems the programming (Leopard) is faulty.

I agree that, at times, the SGE switches can be somewhat difficult when getting them in and out of stack mode. I would recommend getting them back to the config that they had before you tried to remove them from a stack, then configure them via the serial cable back to factory defaults. The pinout for the cable can be found here.
There is also a little, round, red hole at the bottom left of the switches face plate that allows you to factory reset the device. You should use a paper clip and hold it for a full 30 seconds.
These switches are designed to either be stacked or not, meaning they are not supposed to be put in and taken out of stacked mode at random. By default, the switches try to stack together, and do not work well when the stack gets broken up or changed. I sincerely suggest you pick either stacked or standalone and leave them as such.
As a side note, there is a newer firmware available for this switch. It is version 3.0.0.18. It can be found here.
    Please report any new problems.

  • A black see through screen slides down from the top of the Mac and tells me to switch off using power button. Nothing works other than just that. I run sophos up to date and use Safari. Everything is up to date. My Mac is a 21" and is three years old.

As per title. Twice in a few hours. Happened each time when my BT router defaulted to plain public wi-fi and while I waited for airport to locate my router hub I just ticked my hub and boom this dark almost black see through screen slid down and instructed me to switch off using power button. It is a 3 year old desktop 21" and has been faultless until this. I get the default report an unexpected shutdown form and when I fire up it is fine as indeed it is now.
Any help or ideas how to deal with?

  • IMovie files (v6) corrupted after computer switched off at power button

I had two iMovie files open when my computer froze. I had previously successfully dropped both of these files into the auto-play box in iDVD's Map View (so that I could avoid using "themes" in iDVD — a tip I read at this site). When the computer froze (with the screen appearing completely fragmented with multiple colours during a play back in DVD Player of a DVD I'd burned of this same project), I had to switch the computer off at the power button, and since this happened iDVD will not allow these same two iMovie files to be dropped into the auto-play box in iDVD map view. I then tried dropping older movies into the auto-play box, and I've also created a new smaller 'test' movie to drop into the auto-play box and  all worked OK. So it appears that the iMovie files that were 'open' at the time the computer had to be switched off are now corrupted. I can play them and edit them, but can't get them into iDVD the way I could before.
Does anyone know if these files can be repaired (easily)?
    Would appreciate any help, thanks.
    Cheers,
    Lehla

  • IPhone 5, started IOS 7 update, now I have iTunes logo, remains there after I switch off and on

I tried to download the latest iOS last night, after a couple of mins as the bar was scrolling, the iTunes logo appeared on the screen.  ( this screen appears on the apple restore instructions on the website) .  I have never used iTunes.  I switch the phone off and on again a few times, but the iTunes logo still there and I can't go any further or get onto another screen.  I don't know if the latest iOS update is complete.  I am stuck.  Thanks!

  • MSI P4M900M2-L new hardware found after every switch off

I've just installed the MSI P4M900M2-L motherboard with a E4400 processor.
Everything installs fine (not ! in device manager) and everthing seems to work ok.
If I reboot the machine everything also works ok.
My problem starts if I switch the machine off. When I do this, every time windows boots (vista) the "new hardware found" icon pops up at the bottom and it installs the following:
       - USB to PCI adaptor
       - PCI to PCI adaptor
       - High definition audio
       - and also my tv tuner card
Once it's done a bit of searching all the devices become available, but how can I stop this happening. It's really annoying for Vista Media Center as I've to reconfigure the tuner every time after a reboot (about a 15 minute process).
Any help would be great, as it's driving me mad!
