Mac will not eject a disk.  What do I do?

I inserted a CD-R to see what was on it- pictures, music, etc.   First , the mac takes forever to load the disk onto the screen in the upper right hand corner.  Once it pops up, it will not load, I get the beachball of death and it has not ejected it.  I have tried re-booting and hold the mouse button, I have opened the terminal and typed 'drutril eject', I have drug the icon to the trash can to get it to pop the disk out all to no avail.  To my knowledge, I am out of options.  What do I do now?  Please help.
I am new to mac and have only had the machine for about two weeks.....just my luck.
Thanks ahead of time to anyone who responds.

I had the exact same problem and was doing the exact same thing as you, looking for what was on a particular disk and got the spinning ball, etc.  The drive just seemed slow and quite often, like yours, would not kick the disc out and often it sounded as if the disc was warped because I would get a rubbing sound, etc. But when I inserted the same disc in my wife's iMac (one year older than mine) it ran fine and was very fast.  I looked up both drives in system profiler... hers was a Matshita, mine was a Pioneer. I was having so many problems with mine I brought it in under my AppleCare and they replaced the drive with a new Pioneer drive. Got it home and the same thing was happening. Brought it back the very same day and they used my disc in their laptop and it worked fine. They tried it in an identical iMac as mine and it showed the same symptoms as mine. Turns out that machine had a Pioneer drive. Anyway, when I got it back the second time (today), I noticed they replaced my original Pioneer SuperDrive with a Matshita (because I kept saying the Pioneers just didn't seem very good). So now it works great. No problems. No grinding sounds. No spinning balls. If you have AppleCare, ask if you can have your Pioneer (I'm assuming that's what yours is) replaced with a Matshita. It's very anecdotal but the folks at the Genius Bar apparently agreed with me that a Matshita would take care of my issue... which it did.

  • My mac will not let me open (what were) folders, and displays only a question mark?

About two to three months ago, I had a folder labeled "Complete" (random name). I had dozens of videos from my Flip and some documents created from TextEdit inside. I had it in my desktop first, but then decided it would be easier to place in my application bar. So I did that, and then it worked fine.
Then, I accidentally deleted iMovie (yes, very stupid of me, I don't know how I managed to do that). It did not have anything to do with my Complete folder. It was still working fine.
I reinstalled iMovie '08, and it took about 4-5 hours to successfully download all of the movies from iMovie (I'm a movie type of person). And when it did, I clicked out and found my Complete folder had a gray question mark instead of the blue folder it usually had. Confused, I clicked on it repeatedly and it did nothing. I held down the mouse and it said, "Open at login" with a check. I unchecked it, and it didn't open.
Since then, I have had trouble searching for it via Finder. All of the videos inside were lost, as were the few documents. I tried to install TimeMachine, but alas, it is not compatible with my very old Mac OS X v10.4.11 Tiger. I think that I may go to an Apple store to see if they can help me, although I highly doubt they can, since it's been 2-3 months. The TimeMachine only went back 12 hours, anyway. I would have had to have done it then.
I'm quite unsure what to do now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! The videos and documents were super dooper important to me and I feel horrible and stupid that I somehow got rid of it.
        Thank-you,
    -Kikisan

    Hello,
The question mark means it can't find it where it was when you put it in the Dock.
    I'd get EasyFind...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/11076
Use it to search your whole drive for Files & Folders, case insensitive & show invisibles...
    Complete
That will show any with that word in the name at all.

  • Discs Will Not Eject from Internal or External Burner

Am attempting to transfer my entire iTunes libraries to iTunes on a new PC. I go to backup on disk, choose "Backup entire iTunes Library and playlists", select the burner, and leave preferred speed at max possible. It says it will take six discs, I say OK, tray pops open, I insert disk and off it goes. At then end of the burn of disk one, it says insert a blank disc.
At this point, disc one will not eject no matter what. It does not eject automatically, it does not respond to manual commands from iTunes to eject, it does not respond to hitting the eject button. This is to say that the disc is captured and the tray will not open.
I have tried to burn the backup from the internal burner as well as from a USB external with the same results. No matter what, the disc will not eject. I have tried several combinations of sequences of commands, wasted 10 discs now (they are all disc burn #1 as I have gotten no further).
I want to transfer all of my extensive iTunes stuff to my new PC. Can anyone help me?

That is my exact question. I want to know how I can indicate a different drive to eject

  • My Mac Mini will not read TDK disks from my iMac G3.

My Mac Mini will not read TDK disks from my iMac G3.
I used an iMac G3 (2001) -- the ones that looked like a big pod -- running on OS X and saved files to TDK  CD-R, 700 MB disks, which worked fine. Now that I have a Mac Mini (model number  A1347) I cannot get this computer to read those disks, made on the iMac G3.  Once inserted each disk will open and I can retrieve files for a short period, then the problems start. The computer makes some noises, the beach-ball/pinwheel goes around and I cannot get the files to open or the disk to eject. After a while the disk does eject -- to my relief. I keep using Control+E until ejection happens.
My Mac Mini (2010-2011) is hooked up to a View Sonic HDMI LED monitor, an iOmega external hard-drive for backing up, an Epson Stylus C88 Plus printer and to the internet by a fibre 10MB feed. The Mac Mini runs on OS X version 10.6.8 Snow Leopard: Processor Speed:2.66 GHz
I took the Mac Mini to an Apple retailer and he hooked the computer up to one of his monitors and it read the TDK disks just fine. I am now using Sony CD-RW, 700 MB disks, but I would prefer to use my TDKs because I have such a large pile of blank ones to use and there are those TDK disks with information that I want to look at from time to time. Can anyone tell me what to do?
    DJG

Try disconnecting everything attached to the Mini except the monitor.
If that doesn't work, try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later. If successful, copy the files to the original account Public/Dropbox.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Yes I have tried ejecting uning terminal and disk utility will not open becouse of the DVD drive.

You have added too much junk:
    com.senstic.driver.PocketAudioDevice          1.1
    com.logmein.driver.LogMeInSoundDriver          1.0.0
    com.digidesign.iokit.DigiIO          7.4.1d0

If you want Apple to address your problems, the first requirement is to reproduce the problem with no third-party kernel extensions present.
Most users find that when the eliminate the third-party kernel extensions, they eliminate the kernel panics.

  • DVD disk will not eject

How can I eject a disk when it will not eject thru regular means?

    Welcome to discussions, frank.
OK, here we go, in preferred order of things to try:
    1. With the machine powered down, power up holding the trackpad button.
    2. With the machine powered down, boot into open firmware by holding the cmd-opt-O-F key combination until you get the white OF terminal screen, then enter the following commands:
eject cd <enter> // (wait a couple of seconds to see if it works)
    reset-all <enter>
    3. With the machine powered off, use a credit card as a pry tool and insert a corner into the opening slightly, at a point about one inch from the right edge of the opening and press down gently with the card to see if you can get the release lever to spring the disc.  Be very ginger about doing this.  The lever often looks like what you see in this picture of an out-of-machine optical.
If those don't work, then you are stuck with removing the drive from the machine and working from there.
    Good luck!

  • Powerbook will NOT eject disks

I know there are many threads on this subject: but it seems this Powerbook has a very strange problem as it will NOT eject disks.
IT IS NOT A SOFTWARE MALFUNCTION
I have opened up the unit and gently pushed a thin knife inside the front section of the superdrive itself, and it seems there is some kind of catch that has come down and stuck at the front. About 20mm wide, making it impossible for the DVD in the drive to be ejected.
Is there some weakness in a component part that causes this?
    Any help greatly appreciated.

However, I have heard that if you turn your Mac off and leave it off overnight, the stuck arm may retract on its own. I think the arm is there to prevent you from inserting another disc if there is already one in the drive, but apparently it can get stuck.
Here's hoping something here will help.
    Good luck!
