  • HT1750 What about TWO different numbers in MacOs (about this mac window) and on the bottom of the foot of the iMac ???

What about TWO different serial numbers in macOs (about this mac window) and on the foot of the mac. This mac was not purchased as a refurbished nor has been sent for servicing on any time since purchasing...
The one in MacOs is answering : "This is not a valid Apple Product serial number" when i try to check the iMac 1TB Seagate Hard Drive Replacement Program...

You will need to check with Apple - might be a good idea to take it to a Genius Bar so they can see it for themselves (and the diagnosis is free).

  • Problems triple booting (Mac, Windows, and Tails on usb)

Im having troubles booting TAILS (built on linux) from USB on my Mac.
I have a windows partition setup on the same drive as my Mac os (mavericks).  I also have rEFInd setup.  When I reboot and enter rEFInd my Mac, windows, and Legacy USB options appear.  I select the usb option and windows boots instead.  I need to figure out how to boot from the flash drive and stop the Windows boot loader from taking over.  Mac os boots normal however.

  • Slideshows which work for Mac, Windows AND ipads/iphones???

    Hi.
My first post here & just getting into mac after many decades of windows!!
After much searching around I have finally found a place (Yola) where I can design a website which is compatible with all browsers/mac/windows..hurray.
However, due to the type of work that I do I need to display 50 photos (before/after). I want to do this with a slideshow. I have made up around 8 from different sites but each time there's a compatibility problem with ipads or iphones (but no problem with mac/windows/nokia smartphone).
Is there a slideshow (FREE) which will work across all platforms? Is iphoto the only way - and will that work with windows and is there a free version.
Finally, the website design software uses 'widgets' to place code into the site for photos/slideshows etc etc.
Any help would really be appreciated!

PS Hope to be getting an ipad soon.

come on guys, someone here must play some games on their intel mac?

  • Mac, Windows, and Fedora on Boot Camp?

I currently have Windows XP and of course Mac installed on my MacBook, but I was wanting to get a little experience with Linux again and I was going to install Fedora or openSUSE, but I installed a ISO DVD/CD and it says I have to practically reformat it as a Journaled drive or whatever. Is there anyway to avoid this because doing so would reformat my drive and I don't feel like making backups for all my information every time I want to add an OS. Is there any way around this?
I had to do this before to reinstall Windows.
Also, could anyone tell me what kind of ISO image I should download for a MacBook? On my old HP laptop I thought the ISO-[i386]-DVD was the right one. Or does Mac's need a x86? Or does it really not matter? I just noticed that whatever I downloaded was usually a i386 on the HP. I don't really know the difference.
I plan on getting Parallels again and just doing it like that. Or VMware if that's better? Again, something I could use an opinion on. I had Parallels before and eventually it started causing issues. But that could have been my fault, I was still fairly new to the Mac system.
    -Thanks

    Hi The Gift,
    have a look here for a tri-boot Mac http://blog.christophersmart.com/2009/12/02/how-to-triple-boot-mac-pro-with-os-x -fedora-windows/
And yes, you have to revert back to a single OSX harddisk in order to tri-boot.
Although for initial testing/experiencing I would propose to use VirtualBox http://www.virtualbox.org/ and put Fedora in a VM.
The i386 package should work just fine on your MacBook. Or you can use the 64-bit Fedora variant which is then called x86_64

  • DVD looks terrible on Mac/Windows and great on TV

    Hi
My iDVD project looks sharp when played through a domestic player with a TV, but awful on the computer (Windows and Mac).
    It looks soft and mushy.
Any ideas? It is going to be played back mostly on computers.
    Thanks

    Leanda,
Today's DVD are low resolution devices compared to our computer monitors because they were designed to be viewed on the 'old fashioned' CRT TV sets. An NTSC TV set has less than 640x480 pixels - when you 'blow up' such an image to fill a large computer monitor, the image WILL be 'soft and mushy'.
If you intend to view a movie just on computers and will keep it on a hard drive, you can maintain quality because hard drives can give the highest playback bit-rates. However, if you want to put the movie on a CD or DVD, the playback bit-rate of disc players won't let you maintain the highest quality without skipping. Neither of these options will give you the menu structure of iDVD.
You need to decide what it is that you want.

  • Mac Mini and Dial Up

I'm looking at a mac mini for my parents. They live out in the country and are on dial up. I remember apple having a USB modem that you could plug in, but I can't find it in the online store anymore. Is it still available? If they were to get a new mac mini, is connecting and configuring it for dial up possible?

If you search for the USB Apple Modem on a popular Internet auction site, some people are selling Brand New In "Box" and Used (sometimes only a few times) USB Modems.
I would stick with Apple products rather then 3rd party but thats me.
I have checked and there are a few but they are from the USA so you may have to check with Canada Customs to see what the limits are with said product.
If you are ok with 3rd party brands then go for the new ones from retail stores, if your like me then the popular auction site is the answer.

  • Mac Windows and installing fonts.

    Hi,
    I am a novice.
I am attempting to install Greek fonts(I teach Greek) on Mac Word 2008.
When I click Install Font, it doesn't show up in Mac Word.
    Please help.
    I need step-by-step instructions.
Do I need to re-install my Word?
    Help!

I have some old Word files that have greek text in them.
When I open them in Mac Word 2008, the greek appears as webdings.
Why doesn't Mac Word 2008 recognize the font if my Mac has Greek on it?
Probably because the Greek in your files is in some legacy encoding instead of the Unicode used by all modern computers. It may require some non-standard font to read them, and such fonts are sometimes just not recognized by modern apps and OS's.
If you send me a copy of one of the files I will see if I can find a way to convert it to something legible (tom at bluesky dot org).

  • Want to use a Lacie External Hard Disk with Windows and Mac? Can I?...

Hi, I've just purchased a Lacie Extreme D2 external hard disk, I'm looking to use it to move film clips from my Mac G5 to my Sony Vaio laptop. I'll connect the Mac using Firewire 1 and the PC using USB 1.
I understand there is an issue with setting the compaitibility of the hard disk to either Mac or Windows format but I'm wondering if I can set it to both, so it's possible to transfer these files? The hard disk is Windows and Mac compatible but does it have to be partitioned a certain way?
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Alex

Format the drive as FAT or use the Mac format (HFS Extended) and install MacDrive on the PC.

  • I have recently bought a Mac PC and wish to have my music for my windows laptop show up on the mac (all that shows are my purchased songs) do i have to manually add my cds somehow?

All my music that i have loaded onto my windows HP Laptop (Envy) has not shown up on my Mac PC, only the purchased songs bought through the iTunes store.
Do i have to manually load the cd's onto my Mac via a portable media unit? Or will that not work? I do not want to have to purchase all my favourite music again

Only purchases appear because they are coming Apple's own copy keeps on the Internet when it sees you have connected a computer without the purchases.  Anything else has to be transferred by you.
Moving an entire library: Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its sub-folders and files) intact to the other drive.  Hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) and open iTunes.  At the prompt to create or choose a library choose the copied iTunes folder.
When this is to a new computer put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)

  • I have partitioned my time capsule, but I can't get it to work as a Time Machine back up and permanent media server for both mac and PC. What format do I need to partition the drive to so that it works for both mac and windows and so that it will be visab

I have partitioned my time capsule, as I want part of it to act as a media server for both mac and windows. However I don't know what format that I need to partition it to. I also can't make it a permanently accesible drive. I want to restore the drive to the original format (which I don't know) and start again and re-partition the drive in a format that can be used for media by both mac and PC and for time machine back-ups and make the media part of it permanetly accesible so I can add and acccess my files.
    Thanks

You are mixing up a couple of things here.
The TC drive cannot be partitioned without removing it.. did you do that?
If you partition it you must use a Mac disk utility and use the HFS+ ie standard Mac format. And GUID partition table not windows type.
You can select erase disk in the airport utility.. that will take the disk back to original format. No partitions. TC is deliberately not partitioned as it is not a media server.. it is a backup device for TM. Over time .. the disk will be filled with TM backups so you have a long history of file changes to your computer.
There is no media server in the TC.. it is merely disk storage.. you can serve files from it to a media device.. but the TC itself is dumb as dumb.
Now the actual format of the drive is irrelevant to the PC.. The TC offers SMB file services to the network. You can copy files to and from the TC as if it was a local disk without caring one iota about the format. The TC handles that .. it is not a local disk .. it is a network drive.
Although you cannot partition the TC. you can still copy files to it.. this does have implications for TM.. but as long as there is plenty of free space should not be a major issue.
You can create a disk image via the disk utility in a Mac.. and as stated you can create partitions if you do it on a Mac with the disk directly connected which means breaking warranty if any exists on the TC.

  • Having trouble setting up an Ad Hoc network with both iOS, Mac OS, and Windows.

So I'm skiing with some friends but we forgot to bring a router with us.  The lodge internet is passable but we only have one ethernet connection.  My friend connected his (windows) laptop to the ethernet and set up an Ad-Hoc network.  The problem is that only Mac OS and iOS devices are able to connect to the network and use the internet.  The windows machines and Droid devices can't connect or in some cases they can connect they can't use the internet.
My question is what special wizardry allows Mac OS and iOS to work fine on the ad hoc network but not the other platforms?  Is there something I can do to get the other machines to connect to the network?  Would things work better if I hosted the Ad Hoc network? Thanks for all the help.

  • Silent print a PDF from a web page using Flex. We are targeting Windows and Mac with Arcobat reader installed

We are planning to Silent print a PDF from a web page using Flex. We are targeting Windows and Mac with Arcobat reader installed. I have tried using the AIR appliaction and it worked, But our requirement is NO INSTALL to the user machine for the silent printing. It is just from web page and silent printing to the default printer to the desktop/Laptop. Can anyone share your thoughts and experience with us. It will be very helpful..
For AIR : I tried the thread Re: AIR and PDF showing/silent printing

    Hey CodeMonkey & Ross,
Did you either of you ever find a solution? I'm stuck too, it seems I can get remote printing on all these PDFs to work but it just prints a blank page since I've been using Javascript in the browser, not Adobe's (they are Engineering drawings that I do not have permission to edit so I can't just insert code into them but I need to make work instructions). I've been scouring the internet for hours now, it seems that this thread is the only relevant/useful one at this point. No one else was trying to achieve this for similar reasons to mine.
    Thanks guys,
