Mac & Windows compatibility

Can I use Premiere Pro(and even Ae & Ps) project files made in Windows in Adobe on a Mac?  And visa versa?
Thank you for this important help.  Me and a friend a collabrating on projects and he owns a Mac while I own Windows based.  We are hopinfg we can use each others project files.

Your project file will be compatible on both pc and mac (unless it was
created using a hardware-specific sequence/media setting i.e. Matrox, etc
that is not installed on the second system).
The real trick is making sure all of your media files are cross-platform compatible.

  • Mac/Windows Compatibility for Word-Help!

I just recently got Office for my Mac. I created a Word document and emailed it to a business partner. He has Windows and when he opened it, everything (including jpg.'s) were out of place and everything was skewed. He thinks he's running 2003. Any ideas on how I can create my documents so that he is able to open them?

There is no assurance of 100% correctness between different versions of msWord. If you are using Word 2004, in the File--SaveAs dialog, Click on the Compatibility Report and run it (in the report window, you can select "Word 2003 for Windows" since your colleague is using that. That will give you some hints on what to change.
You can try saving (file -- saveAs) in the RTF format - and try the Word 4-6 RTF and other formats as well). Good luck!

  • External hard drives and mac/windows compatibility - Need Help pls

I have an external Harddiskdrive with 200 GB formatted in HFS+ with my Mac.
    And here's my Problem:
A friend of me would have some of the MP3's on this HDD, but he is a PC user with Windows XP. So he could not see the drive in his Workspace.
Is there a way without buy MacDrive or something like that?
Or is there a App like MacDrive as Freeware or OpenSource???
What is with the "DOS" - format (FAT32)? Can I use this without an afraid of losing my Data on this Drive???

"am getting this error message on my Mac:
    SMART status not supported"
This is not an error. SMART status reports of hard drives are not passed through the chipsets of external enclosures.
"What is this FAT program and how do I make it work? "
FAT is not a program. IT's the format in which the drive is fomatted.

  • Mac/Windows Compatability Issue!

I got a prob with my 5G ipod, as in my previous question i said that when my ipod is formatted to mac it wont work on my windows laptop and normally with an ipod when you format to windows (FAT32) it should work on your mac aswell, however after following peoples instructions to do this my ipod formatted at FAT32 still will not work on my mac, i get the message "Disk Insertion" "the disk yu inserted was not readable by this computer" then the options, initialize, ignore, eject, pressing initialize brings up disk utility.
I have tried all options, resetting, restoring ect. tried different usb ports on the mac.
I dont know what else to do becuase i want to be able to use it on both computers, can anyone please help me????

You might be able to look at the iPod that is formatted FAT32 on a Mac as a HARD DISK, but you cannot set it up to work with BOTH Mac and Windows' iTunes at the same time. You have to pick one or the other.

  • Question Reguarding the new windows compatable Macs

I have been reading a lot about the new windows compatibility on all new Macs. I also researched the software it requires. Is the new software needed to run all of my PC programs, or just anable me to use Windows OS? Does this new technology allow me to use ALL of my Windows software including third party programs like games and other apps?

Parallels is less suitable for playing games due to constraints on 3D graphics.

  • Switching from Windows to Mac - Drive Compatibility

I'm finally getting back to Mac after a 15 year break using Windows.
My question relates to all my existing files. I have an external drive that I store all of my data on. It includes my ITUNES files, my photos etc. The drive actually hangs off of my Airport Extreme N Router.
When I get my MAC, will I be able to access those files? Will this be read/write? Even if it is just once so that I can copy them off of my external drive and onto my new Mac harddrive? Sorry, being in the Windows world I'm hung up on always thinking that things are incompatible. Is the drive formatted in a way that I can access?
I plan to use Boot Camp and/or Parellels as well - a couple of nagging work applications with no Mac version. When running Windows, will I still be able to access files from that drive as well? For instance, if I continue to run Windows Office while in the Windows environment, can I read/write files to that drive still without disturbing files that the Mac OS and applications will be accessing? Or will the drive be eitehr pure "windows or mac" ?
I'd still like the external drive to be accessable from the other Windows machine in the house as well until I switch that one out....can that happen?
What about my Apple TV which I haven't installed yet. Will it be able to access my photo files, etc. on this drive?
This is my last hold up to switching. I just dont want to dive in and find myself without any of my old data.
I know the answer is probably easier to explain than I'm asking. I just can't get my head wrapped around this for some reason. Thanks in advance.
    Summary:
One Windows Machine that uses External Drive for all data storage - replacing with Mac
One Windows Machine that uses External Drive for backups
External Drive hanging off of AEN router.
Apple TV - to be installed

    Hello Atlantax,
I can't answer all of your questions, but some.
    my photos etc.
Yes. As you know, all files are associated in Windows by their extension. With OS X, the Mac is also now like this. Though it does double up with the older Type/Creator codes of OS 9 and earlier. So all you your .jpg, .tif, .eps, .ai and other formats will all be easily recognized by your Mac counterpart applications like Photoshop, Illustrator, Quark, etc.
Not that it will be perfect. On the Mac, while all .eps files for example, like Windows, have the same extension no matter which app created them, the Mac also assigns Type/Creator codes to each file so it knows which app it belongs to. So unlike Windows, which can have .eps assigned to only one application (meaning an Illustrator .eps will try to open in Photoshop if that's the app the .eps extension is assigned to), this doesn't happen on the Mac. An .eps created in Photoshop will open in Photoshop, Illustrator in Illustrator, etc., when you double click on them.
But you will have an issue with the files you copy over since they will have no Type/Creator codes. As will .jpg, .tif and all other image formats. If there's more than one app that can open them, you'll have the same issue with those older files as you do in Windows. They will simply try to open in the whatever the default app is in the LaunchServices database.
You could get around this somewhat by assigning a Photoshop .eps to Photoshop. But then OS X will behave just like Windows and try to open all .eps files in Photoshop, ignoring the Type/Creator codes.
    Will this be read/write?
If it's FAT16 or FAT32, it will be read/write. If it's NTFS, it will be read only.
When running Windows, will I still be able to access files from that drive as well?
Yes. It would be best to have the external formatted as FAT32 so both the Mac and Windows can access it natively. What the Mac will do in that case is copy two files to the external drive for each item you copy over. Say the name of the file is KittyCat.tif. It will put these two files on the external drive:
    KittyCat.tif
    ._KittyCat.tif
Since the second file starts with a period, it will be invisible in OS X. But it's important because it holds the resource fork information of a Mac drive that can't normally exist on a FAT32 drive. So when you copy it back, OS X will automatically rejoin the data fork information (visible file) with the resource fork information (Type/Creator codes, time stamps, etc.). You'll see those ._xxx files from within Windows, so don't just start deleting them. Either that, or use OS X's Disk Utility to partition the drive into two parts. One as Mac OS Extended (HFS+), and the other as FAT32. Then save your files on each partition as per the OS they belong to.
I'd still like the external drive to be accessible from the other Windows machine in the house as well until I switch that one out....can that happen?
Yes, if it's FAT32, or split into separate Mac/Windows partitions as described above. Unless you've got MacOpener on your Windows machine, it simply won't access the Mac formatted partition. NTFS will also work, but you'll only be able to read from the Mac.
Also, as Gnarlodious mentions, the Mac will let you use some characters in file names that Windows doesn't allow. I'm sure you're already aware of these, but here's a list anyway.
These are all characters reserved by the system in DOS.
    ? [ ] / \ = + : ; " , * |
In the Windows Joliet file system, these characters are not allowed.
    ? / \ : " * |
    Hope this helps.

  • Slideshows which work for Mac, Windows AND ipads/iphones???

    Hi.
My first post here & just getting into mac after many decades of windows!!
After much searching around I have finally found a place (Yola) where I can design a website which is compatible with all browsers/mac/windows..hurray.
However, due to the type of work that I do I need to display 50 photos (before/after). I want to do this with a slideshow. I have made up around 8 from different sites but each time there's a compatibility problem with ipads or iphones (but no problem with mac/windows/nokia smartphone).
Is there a slideshow (FREE) which will work across all platforms? Is iphoto the only way - and will that work with windows and is there a free version.
Finally, the website design software uses 'widgets' to place code into the site for photos/slideshows etc etc.
Any help would really be appreciated!

PS Hope to be getting an ipad soon.

come on guys, someone here must play some games on their intel mac?
please help me make my mind up

  • Moderator: A FAQ for Windows Compatibility forum?

Would it be possible to do a FAQ section in the Windows Compatibility forum <http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=687>? Many of the same topics are being asked repeatedly and I feel a FAQ could address most of the similar topics.
I suggest the following as topics for the FAQs:
    1. Microsoft Office questions. These are not relevant to Mac and Windows compatibility and are more appropriately posted in Microsoft's discussion forums.
    2. Boot Camp questions should be directed to the Boot Camp forum and Parallels questions should be directed to <http://fourms.parallels.com>.
    3. The need for antivirus software for Windows when it is running on a Mac.
    4. A list of links detailing how to print from a Mac to a Windows-connected printer and vice versa.

Thanks for your replies Ardian and Hardy! I'm glad to see at least the idea is supported by a few others. Maybe it will catch on.
What I find interesting is that the Windows Compatibility forum has become the dumping ground for all the "Windows" questions that don't seem to fit in the forums listed before it. You'll notice on the Forum Home page that it's at the end of the Windows Compatible Technology list. I'm sure folks are ruling out the more specific technologies such as iPod, iTunes, QuickTime, etc., and posting there when they don't know where else to post.
    Windows Compatible Technology
AirPort & AirPort Express for Windows
    Bonjour for Windows
    Boot Camp Public Beta
    iPod
    iTunes for Windows
    QuickTime for Windows
    Windows Compatibility
Even a general FAQ link below or to the right of the the section title would be a helpful guide for folks.
I'm frustrated that more than 50% of my questions seem to be telling first time posters why their questions aren't approrpriate for the forum and which forums they should be using.

  • Compatible w/Macs; Windows; iPhone; WindowsMobile

I have a young developer working on some web development projects for me and I'm running into compatibility issues. We test on Macs & Window systems and everything looks fine, then we go to iPhone Safari and find that our sites don't behave properly. One site does have Flash in it.
One issue is, we don't have an iPhone and would like to know when we develop that our work is seemless throughout.
Any suggestions as to how to make/test and assure all platforms work properly?
(not worried too much about Windows Mobile)

    Hi Ce,
FYI, there are some specific iPhone Forums here, you might get more help there.

AFAIK, the iPhone does not support Flash content at the moment.

  • Advice on External HDD for Mac & Windows

    Hello
I am looking for advice regarding using a external HHD for Mac & Windows.
I searched the forum, but failed to find a updated thread on this subject matter.
I will be using the drive on both platforms regularly.
Should i use HFS+ with a small FAT32 partition to keep MacDrive on?
What is a good way to approach this?
Im not sure what would be optimal for both platforms.
Thanks in advance for your input.

    Why just one?
Shopping list I can think of:
Vista: NTFS for backups and storage. Can be read by, but not written, Mac OS.
MacDrive 7: can access HFS+ from within Windows (but not x64 versions)
WinClone 1.5: to make backups of Windows from within Mac OS (requires disk image or partition to hold volume image)
SuperDuper: essential for OS X backups and bootable clone.
A drive that is used for emergency only and maybe backup partition, separate from your OS X and windows clone drive.
You can create large partitions with Disk Utility to be FAT32. Read and write in both, but not the best file system and limited to files less than 4GB.
FW800 would be fast and efficient interface. Also, eSATA if possible.

  • External drive for both Mac & Windows

I'd like to be able to do the smart thing and have a backup of the drives on my iMac. I've got Windows installed thru Boot Camp, which I access using VMware Fusion.
When I visited an Apple Store, one of the guys there told me that I could get an external hard drive, format it for each drive, and Time Machine would back it up. Having no idea how to do this, I thought I'd check here.
First of all, I'm not sure whether to get a 500GB or 1TB external HD--I have a 500GB HD on my iMac, but I'm only using roughly 100GB of it, and I have no plans to use much more than 150GB. Do I need a huge drive?
Once I have the HD, how do I format it for Mac & Windows XP separately? I know I have to partition it, but after that....what?
Next, is it possible to use Time Machine for both drives? Or will I only be able to use it for the Mac drive and manually backup XP?
After reading some other posts, I'm wondering if it's wise to update to 10.5.5. Any advice on this?
    Any help/suggestions would be great--thanks!

TM will not backup a Windows partition. If you create a disk image drive with VM Fusion TM will back it up, but only the entire image file.
If you partition an external drive using GUID, then you can format one of the partitions FAT32 to use with Windows, but TM will not backup that partition nor backup anything on your main drive to that partition.
A TM backup drive or partition should be at least twice the capacity of the capacity of the drive you are backing up. If your iMac drive is 500 GBs then your backup drive's capacity should be roughly twice that size (less the space you have allocated as the Boot Camp partition.)
There's no reason not to update to 10.5.5, but if you prefer not to that's your choice. It isn't necessary although if you are going to use TM it would be wise to update because several TM bugs have been fixed by the 10.5.5 update.
