Mac/Windows -- Which One?

My iPod was orginally formatted on a Windows PC. After I switched to an iMac, I placed all of my music onto the Mac, and I currently buy songs from iTunes on my Mac. I recently bought a Windows-based laptop. Last night, updated iPod software came across my iMac, but it couldn’t update my iPod because it was formatted in Windows. The software asked me if I wanted to instead reset to the factory settings, but I declined because I wanted to avoid an impending disaster. Do I have to update my iPod on the Windows machine? Should I use iTunes on the Windows laptop? Can you change your iPod to a Mac-based one? There are too many **** rules!
iMac G5, Rev. B   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   2.0 ghz; 2 gb RAM; 400 gb hard drive

Probably the easiest way to use an iPod on both Mac and Windows computers is to format the iPod (using iPod Updater) using the PC. This will force your iPod to use the Windows file system (FAT32) which both the Mac and PC can read from and write to without the help of additional software. Of course then all your software updates for the iPod will have to be done on Windows.

If you need to use a Mac (HFS+) formatted iPod on a Windows PC, you'll need to install some 3rd party software such as XPlay 2.0 (which you can get from MediaFour Software). This will enable your Windows PC to read a Mac-formatted iPod.

  • I want to install a second disc drive in my mac pro - which ones?

I have always had all-in-ones. I now have a mac pro, and I love it. I have many disc drives of varying sorts lying around my place, most from older windows towers, but one cd-rw drive from a round base imac. Since I could never do these types of expansion on my old macs, I have no clue what will hook up in my empty drive bay.
This drive from the apple is a... sony cd-r/rw drive unit crx170E/. can I put it in my mac pro's second slot?
If so or if not, can someone briefly explain the types of cd-r connections that would/would not work so i understand the concepts?

Oh alright. Here is the same drive someone put up for sale, just in case I was speaking wrong.

  • Another PC guy thinking of moving to MAC.  Which one should I buy?

Here's what I do on my pc:
I've worked with PCs 100% of the time at home. Do the usual surf the net/email, also do a lot of video editing/home movies with videos and photos, record narrations, make short video blogs, convert VHS tapes to DVD, copy DVDs to computer and to the ipod, ipod, transmit music throughout the house, etc. All of this will be a big part of my future use.
I have become frustrated with the pc's snags/glitches/re-boots, etc., especially when when working with video editing/making movies. I am considering the purchase of a mac given all the positives I hear about them in this area.
My concern is that so much is changing in computers that I will purchase a system and then regret the decision for what I want to do. I'd also like to look at using my computer to record tv shows like a TIVO if that's possible. Also, is an upgrade available to be able to plug in my VCR and tape players so I can convert these items to computer-useable format quicker. Presently, I use a third party hardware that is a waste of time putting all of this together.
    Thanks for the help.

TD's tip on Elgato is on the mark as several of Elgato's TV Tuners have Composite/S-Video input ports too. (Elgato EyeTV Hybrid). There are also standalone devices.
Whilst the Elgato does a very similar job to the TiVo it is not TiVo itself which is also available for the Mac (groan; for a price).
The Mac Mini uses a laptop size/speed hard disk and so serious video editing is out. The Mac Pro is a workstation priced for and aimed at tru professionals. The laptop/desktop decision is really whether you need portability or not; if you do consider a large LCD screen and large external hard drive for your main desk. I can understand that the form-factor of the iMac may take some getting over for "switchers" (as will the slight learning curve of getting used to OS X: Switch 101) but the iMac is a well developed and evolved design.
Your insurance: in the unlikely event you don't love OS X just buy a copy of Windows and install it on the Mac.

  • In need of a new Mac Pro, which one?

In the market for a new Mac Pro, mainly for CS5 apps, an ocassional Final Cut project and some Modo rendering (simple work). My Mac is an early 2008 2.8 GHz 8 core with 10 gigs of RAM, rock solid performance and trouble free and I'm looking to buy a new one within the next week. The 4 core 2.8 appeals to me for the lower price, but inclined for the 8 core, is the $1,000 difference between 4 and 8 core woth it? The 4 core has a faster processor, so I would assume that the difference in speed is basically a non-issue for the work I do, am I right? On the other hand, I rather get the 4 core with at least 12 gigs of ram, since most apps don't take advantage of 8 cores.
Need opinions and suggestions and if someone has a link for performance comparisons test between the two, would be appreciated, can't find any.

Not everyone, but more than a few, swear by SSD making their Mac run smooth and faster all around.
You are rather low on RAM for any real strong CS5 use.
Your Mac can boot into 64-bit kernel, too. Read up on that on MPG and along with 24GB pays 15% dividends.
And you can take advantage of 5870 or 5770 as well as Quadro 4000 ($789 PNY Quadro for Mac on Amazon, versus $1195 on Apple Store). 5770 + 4000 is $1050 investment.
You 'should' be using say 3 x 2-3TB enterprise version drives. And 120-240GB SSD $600.
Intel 3.2GHz Harpertown (Penryn) 5400s are probably not cost effective and seems the highest MHz you can go.
I go with coffee can, create an account to go towards the next system. Put X-amount aside each month and only buy on cash or your business pays for itself in six months.
The real hard part comes when a new model comes out, knowing the first 3 months are often rough and best to hold off, wait, read the reviews and reports. And know that buying that while today you could 'down grade' to Snow Leopard, the next time you can't and it takes time to optimize all the drivers and software that a workstation is more likely to need.
If you have $3.5K burning a hole, then the ref'd 2.8 and optimize "the heck" out of it, with W3680 and everything else, and then sell yours later too for $1500 probably.

Your 8-core 2,8 is not yet ready to retire!

  • 64 bit Oracle on Windows: which one to use?

On Oracle download site (http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/oracle10g/index.html), there are two entries for 64 bit Oracle software for Microsoft Windows.
    1. Oracle Database 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.1.0) for Microsoft Windows (x64)
    2. Oracle Database 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.1.0) for Microsoft Windows (64-bit Itanium)
What is the difference in these two products? Is it processor dependant (Xeon/Itanium)?
Please...can someone help me understand this?

There have been lots of Oracle bugs specific to Itanium platforms. I've also come across quite a few problems in OS/firmware level (some tools might not be available, fixes appear slowly if at all etc.). Things might get better if/when compilers for Itanium mature.
On top of all that I don't think the price/performance ratio of the platform is that good. You will probably get an Opteron setup for about 1/3 of the price of its Itanium equivalent. (in terms of amount of RAM and so on)
And judging from Oracles Unbreakable act it looks like they might be dropping support for Itanium altogether sooner or later. I might be wrong on this one though.

  • Mac Pro - which one?

I am getting a new Mac Pro and I need to run CS5 suite on it... for the money is getting the 8-Core vs the Quad-Core worth it? And how fast is the Quad-Core? I mostly want speed in Photoshop and the iMacs are too slow for me. Also, I want around 3 programs open so I can go from one to the other.

Think of counting processors in these Macs the way a small child counts:
    One, two, lots, infinitely many.
You want lots, and most anything beyond that is not very different from lots.

  • I just bought a new macair laptop and it doens't have idvd and I want to make a DVD slideshow with music.  I have an external CD drive. Is there an applicaation that apple has to do this?  IF I buy a used mac, which ones have idvd?

I have a new macair laptop and it does not have idvd. It has a flashdirve instead, so no internal CD drive though I bought an external one. I'm wanted to make a DVD slide show with music and I was told I can't do that in order to play it on a dvd player. Does Mac have an appication to buy that can do the same thing? I thought I saw one for $39.95 but not sure if it will do this. The apple store did not know for sure. Also, if I bought a used mac laptop, which ones will have the idvd installed on it?
    Thanks,
    Phyllis

It is now apparent that iWeb, and iDVD, will no longer be supported by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
Other users have complained to Apple via Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/idvd.html and/or http://www.apple.com/contact/ and have received a boxed copy of iLIfe 11.  Give it a try. In the meantime the following maybe of interest:
iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
All of these issues can be replaced with 3rd party options.
I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken.  If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows.  Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.
However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone.  How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
Apple has announced that iLife is now an unsupported product and those iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on. However, the boxed iLife 11 at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD. Those two apps were listed in small, gray text on the iLife 11 box that I bought. Personally, if I already didn't have a copy I would purchase one to have it for reinstallation purposes if ever needed.

  • IPad or Mac? which is better worth the money?

iPad or Mac? which one is better worth the money, if mac, which is the cheapest but still gives you all the good apps and qualities? I would use it alot, and i already have an iouch so would the ipad be worth it? im a teenager so i would use these things alot, and i need some features to help with school and just having fun!!

iPad is not a substitute for a Mac. It's more like a companion to a Mac.
In desktops, Mac mini should be sufficient and is the only comparable Mac in terms of price, but you need to add a monitor, keyboard.
In laptops, consider the MacBook Air for its portability, and the MacBook Pro for more options in terms of processing and screen size.
Visit an Apple Store (the physical kind). The staff is very helpful and will assist ou in making a decision.

  • Switching to Mac - which one for me?

I can't find a suitable place for this question, but my son is starting a job at a tv studio and wants a mac to get into video creation and editing. Which one should he get for this purpose? He has a pc, so he has keyboard, video and mouse. Thanks.
    pc right now   Windows XP

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
He should go for the Mac Pro. As a professional he'll appreciate the expandability in the coming months and years. iMacs are fantastic general purpose machines and ideal for home video editing but if you're doing it day-in, day-out the Mac Pro is the way to go. They don't cost a great deal more either:
    iMac
    24" LCD
    1x2.1.6GHz Merom
    1Gb RAM (3GB)
    250Gb HDD (750Gb)
    8x DVD±RW DL
    BT and Airport
    $1,999.00
    Mac Pro
23" LCD (with then option to connect up to a 30" too)
    2x2.0GHz Xeon Woodcrest
    1Gb RAM (16Gb)
    250Gb HDD (3Tb)
16x DVD±RW DL (x2 or Bluray in future)
    BT and Airport
    $3,278.00
It's fair to say that's over a thousand dollars more but when you look at the specs and the room the Mac Pro allows for the future it's a much better bet.

  • Windows Domain Thuursby and Centrify..which one..both?

I am looking at have my Mac environment integrate with my Windows environment. I have 30x as many windows clients as Mac's I have the typical Windows office environment...AD, File Servers,Group Policies..etc,
I rather not have to go through expense of putting a OS X 10.6 server just to control 6 macs. I would like them to authenticate to AD and provide managment of the Mac environment.
I have done some research on Centrify and Thursby products and they both seem to be a recommeded solution.
I seems that Thursby does a better job of connecting to shares/DFS and Centrify does a better job of GP/AD integration.
So is it a one or the other senerio or is one perfed over the other?

    Hi
Either one or the other. It's your choice as both achieve similar things. AFAIK Thursby's latest product is the only one that supports DFS attached volumes. If you go for Centrify you may need another product such as ExtremzIP for DFS Support? You can connect to any Windows based share without the need for anything beyond what's available in the Go Menu. A 'Mac Server' is not that expensive? Apple's mac mini server with SLS Unlimited may actually be more cost-effective? There are other technologies such as NetBoot and SUS you might consider using that might make the cost viable? If all you want is a means to manage the macs then any hardware that meets SLS minimum requirements will do. This would include laptops although they would not be officially supported for SLS use.
    However:
Thursby's product does involve the use/support of an application you may not be familiar with? AdmitMac is installed on the Mac Clients. I'm not absolutely certain regarding the pricing/licensing but I think it's a per seat license? Centrify (or Likewise) is installed on the Windows Server. It 'sits' on top of the AD Schema and 'maps' apple-specific Object Classes, attributes and values that correspond with windows-specific ones. GPOs that are applicable to windows workstations can then be applied to mac ones. Everything is done from AD. No need to use/support another management application.
There are other ways of doing this depending on your skill set and requirements? You could alter the AD Schema itself? Create/add the appropriate Object Classes, attributes and values yourself. All you would need thereafter is WorkGroup Manager installed on a client mac workstation to assign appropriate MCX (or mac-style GPOs). Another way would be to download WorkGroup Manager (free to download) and install it on the mac workstations directly. Create a 'generic' local account separate from a locked down local administrator account and use WorkGroup Manager locally to manage that account or computer. WorkGroup Manager allows for finer 'granular' control beyond the built-in Parental Controls. If users are going to be 'using/sitting at' the same workstations rather than true roaming profiles a similar result can also be achieved.
These last methods involve no expense at all. Just some time and effort on your part which you would have to invest anyway.

  • Which one to run windows?

I want to install windows only to play windows only games. I've heard of 3 different applications that can run windows, VM-ware, Parallels, and Bootcamp. I've heard that Parallels was having some bugs, but want to hear some opinions. Thanks.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
for running Windows solely for playing games you best and only option is BootCamp, since it enables the native use of the hardware in your Mac.
At the moment Fusion as well as Parallels have only support for DirectX 8 with experimental support for DirectX 9.
Check the system requirements of the games you want to play.
If they need DirectX 9 to run, then use BootCamp.
If they are 'older' games which only needs DirectX 8 or lower, then either Parallels or Fusion should suffice.
Which one of them is better (less buggier) is open for discussion, so you might be better trying them for yourself with the Time-delimited Demos they offer.
    regards
    Stefan

  • I want to buy a mac and i am confused between macbook air 13 inch and i mac. which one should i buy

actually i am new to mac so i am confused between macbook air 13 inch and i mac. which one should i buy? i will be installing windows 2 on it..

An MBA is a portable while an iMac is a desktop and is not portable. You could install Windows on either provided each had sufficient memory installed and a large enough hard drive. The iMac is better equipped for this from the outset, but the MBA can be adequately configured if you are willing to spend the money to do so.

  • Looking to buy my wife a Mac, not sure which one

llooking to buy my wife a Mac and not sure which one, she has a windows 7 , any suggestions?

Impossible to answer without any details. How does she use the computer?   What would she like to do on a new one?
Windows 7 is not a computer, its an operating system. It can be an excellent computer rivaling a Mac or be bargain basement offering outdone by even the most modest Mac.
Laptop or Desktop?  Large screen or small? Features? Price range?
So without any real context there's no way to say what you should or should not buy. Or what that Windows 7 computer can do currently,  so as to suggest a similar offering from Apple.
