Mac wireless network never turns off

I have an odd thing going on with my MacBook Pro. I turn it off, like completely off, and put it in my briefcase and go to work. Yet when I get there, people with WiFi-enabled computers can see a WiFi network with my name on it! The computer's off. What is going on?

I believe you when you say it's off, looks off, should be off, but on the other hand, even if say the Wireless card somehow had power by itself, (maybe jarred loose a bit or something), I don't think it could advertise itself without the CPU, RAM, & HD all having power, all be up & running, (maybe a low power state?), and even the OS loaded! Somehow... no real idea how, but I think it's only partially shutting down.
When you turn it on at work, does it start up normally with the gray apple and so on? How long does it take to start up?
If you pull the Battery, how long does it take to startup after that?

I recently got a new iPod Nano 5G for Christmas and when I set the backlight to 2 seconds it never turns off! So the battery ends up draining completely. Another problem is the battery drains really fast. If anyone can help me I would gladly appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

If Find my iPad was never set up then scroll down & follow the directions under Recovery Mode:

If it was and the activation lock is triggered, then you will need to know the original Apple ID & password that her grandkids used to set it up or have them sign into iCloud & remove the device from Find My iPad before you can Restore it.

Since upgrading to Yosemite my macbook pro keeps going to sleep if I am not using it. I want it to stay on as I leave it doing things overnight (cd's  / recording etc. It was fine before the upgrade and I have all the system preference set to "never turn off" - Help !!!

Good advice from Linc Davis that should sort out your query i think...
However you dont want to set your MBP to never go to sleep...
    Adjust reasonable sleep settings...
And the download an APP called caffiene...
When you click it you can have your MBP never go to sleep with a single click of your menu bar... and with another click it can go to sleep normally to maintain the laptop...
Simply click the cup... To toggle never sleep/sleep

  • My Mac book is randomly turning off.

Hi my Mac book is randomly turning off usually at a little bit under half battery. The computer is about two to three years old and I use it a lot. Why is it doing this and what should I do? I am taking it in to the apple store tomorrow. Around how much will it cost to get in.

An examination at the Apple store will not cost you anything. Be sure to make a reservation so you don't have to wait too long at the Genius Bar. If there is a repair required there may be a cost for that.
Have you tried resetting the System Management Controller? That would be the first step I would try for most power related issues.
    Best of luck.

  • Solve X200s the wireless radio randomly turned off/disconnected

I had exactly an issue on my x200s. The wireless radio randomly turned off, and Window 7 was frozen, no response. It took me a lot of time to figure it out. Eventually, it worked out.
Please go to "Lenovo access connections", and find the "tools" tab. In the "global setting", uncheck "Allow the wireless lan radio to be turned off when inactive".
This is going to solve your problem. I worked for me.
    Hope this help.

FWIW, I think the ThinkVantage software just sucks. On my X200 the wifi would drop constantly, every 3 to 5 minutes.  Driver upgrade, software upgrade, settings etc didnt change anything. I wiped the entire hard drive and installed linux, and I haven't seen a drop since.  Maybe try just using the windows wifi to manage your connections.  It could also be related to the power management dropping the wifi, which would also be the ThinkVantage.

  • Option to NEVER turn off

I think an update should be added so we can choose for the box to never go to standby.

I just find having to wait for the box to boot up pointless and not needed. I have it all set to stay turned on for the longest amount of time and to fast boot but you still have to wait for it to turn on and I personally would have it set to never turn off if the function was there. I see no reason why the function isn't there as it makes no odd's to BT and it would be down to the customer if they don't mind paying the electricity bill.

  • I have multiple macs, on 1 wireless network, never both online at same time

So here's the problem. I have an imac and a macbook air. I've been using my airport express for my wireless network. I've setup the airport express to have its own network name, and its password protected.
I've never had a problem with the express, its always been distributing wireless just fine. And I never have any problems connecting to the internet... EXCEPT if i have multiple macs on my network. (Before wasn't so much a problem, unless a friend came over. But now I have two macs).
On a daily basis, 9 times out of 10, if 1 mac is online, the other 1 get's booted. It acts as if they only have 1 IP address or something to work with from the express. Sometimes renewing my dhcp lease will fix the connection on a computer, but only to boot the other one off. And back and forth this goes sometimes. On other occasions, both lose their connections and cant get an ip address at all; forcing me to refresh the express to factory settings and resetting it all up.
I'm just trying to figure out what i might be missing, or why this keeps happening to me. All software is up to date, and it only happens to multiple macs (My room mate has a pc, but when i had only 1 mac we never had this problem).
    Any help or pointers?

    Some questions about your settings:
In AirPort Utility, if you do a "manual setup" on your AirPort Express, In the "Internet" panel what settings do you see for
    - Internet Connection/Connection Sharing
    - DHCP/DHCP Beginning Address (three fields)
    - DHCP/DHCP Ending Address
What is "upstream" from your AirPort Express?

  • NEVER TURNING OFF

Can anyone tell me why my new iMAC manual says I should never turn it off [just put it to sleep] unless I am not going to use it for more than 3 days. I have an ethernet connection and am worried that this permanent connection to the internet makes my MAC vulnerable. Also, of course, it uses electricity while asleep - though I do not know how much.
    Any insight appreciated

Turning your computer on and off "wears" off the components in your computer.Putting the computer to "sleep" is a better alternative and consumes less electricity than if it where on all the time. Also putting the computer to "sleep" helps the computer do some housekeeping that keeps it running smoothly.
If you worry about viruses, get an anti virus. I am a recent Mac converter, with a broadband connection and on 24/7 (except of course for the periods when I am not using, that`s when I put it to sleep).
Coming from a Windows PC world, it feels weird not having an antivirus on my Mac, but thus far, I`ve had no problems

  • Never turning off macbook

Is it bad for my macbook if I never turn it off? I do put it to sleep whenever I know I wont be using it for awhile, and I always have the charger in it.

No. My Mac Pro hasn't been shut down in three years, my wife's iMac remains on 24/7 except when she puts it to sleep, and when I'm in Canada our MBPs are never shut down. However, if you plan to leave the computer unused for an extended period of time it would be a good idea to shut it down. If it's left unused for 4 months or more then you should discharge the battery to about 40% and remove it from the computer for long-term storage.
