Mac won't boot after prohibited symbol

I'd like to thank in advance anyone that will bother reading this. My guess is there is something wrong with the logic board...
I believe my macbook is the early 2011 13" model. kitted with the i7.
Here is a sequence of maybe relevant, maybe not, events that happened before the issue:
1- I run bootcamp quite often
2- I had been running my macbook on clamshell mode for about 2 weeks, connected to an external screen and keyboard&mouse
3- I installed a large amount of plugins for pro tools (10-15Gb worth) the day of the incident.
4- The last time i shut down the computer, i changed the boot disk to mac OSX, under the bootcamp menu in Windows' control panel.
5- When I booted up the next day the boot was going fine until the prohibited symbol appeared, replacing the apple logo.
5.1- After some time, the screen went light-blue (the snow leopard color thing) and the computer suspended itself. (it usually does that when i run it in clamshell mode, right after it finished booting, presumably because the lid is closed)
5.2- The computer was unresponsive to mouse and keyboard input, so i unplugged it and opened the lid.
5.3- It went to desktop, but rather than a mouse, i had a static colored wheel (which i could move). The dock didn't come up, and everything was frozen.
6- I long-pressed the power button to shut it down.
7- When turning it back on, all i can hear is that growly sound from the optical drive/hard drive (not really sure tbh), and the screen doesn't turn on. I can also hear the fans running, and the CPU area heats up.
On a sidenote, i don't hear the traditional apple chime ever since i had HDD data corruption problems and had to run system recovery into a more recent OS. After which i reinstalled a snow leopard (10.6.8) via a system backup i had, which dated from 2011 (and that was this year).
So, is there a magical key combination that will resuscitate my mac? Does this look like a 500€ fix on the logic board?

Also, i don't hear any hard drive read/write activity, so i'm not quite sure if it's spinning.

I have a Mac Mini running very latest version of OSX. I was making a recording with QuickTime; when I needed to plug in a USB recording device into the back of the Mac Mini, as I pulled the Mac off my shelf to do this, the power cable came out and the Mac lost power.
I plugged it back in and powered up the Mac. I get the grey screen with Apple logo and the spinning grey wheel; then it goes to a blue screen (as usual) and I get the "starting OSX..." progress bar. When the progress bar finishes, I'm left with a blue screen only, no dock, no apple icon at top left, nothing across the top, no nothing.
So far, I've booted from the original disc and repaired the permissions as well as the disc, then re-booted, but same old blue screen.
I have another iMac G5 machine, so is there any way I can at least retrieve the important HD files from the Mac Mini to my G5, before throwing the broken Mac Mini away?
Can anyone advise please?

Not to differ with my colleagues here, but there's an important question that wasn't asked.
1. I suggest you run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
2. You may also want to run the Apple Hardware Test that came with your Mini to be sure nothing shorted when the power cable was removed from the computer. I've seen it happen, hence I usually recommend removing the power cable at the wall before disconnecting the power cable from the computer. See my "Apple Hardware Test" FAQ.
3. Repair Disk gives your Mini a clean bill of health, the blue screen may be the result of some Startup or Login item that was corrupted due to the sudden power outage. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem and may help you avoid and Archive and Install.
4. If you elect to go the Archive and Install route, see my "General advice on performing an Archive and Install" FAQ for some important tips on this process.
5. As FYI, this is the kind of problem that makes one glad they've implemented a comprehensive backup and recovery solution. Mac won't boot after updating to OSX 10.6.4

I am on my 3rd Mac that won't boot after updating to OSX 10.6.4. One MacBook Pro and two iMacs. I fixed one but the last two are getting the better of me. HD is not fried. Have tried every keyboard shortcut on startup, Disk Warrior via. Target Disk, repairing permissions in single user mode. The machines will not boot off of a CD or DVD and it will not boot up in safe mode. Something in the startup files is preventing startup. I am suspecting Sophos antivirus. I tried to uninstall it and trash it but I think it's still blocking something. Any help would be appreciated.

Got it! Not sure if removing Sophos had anything to do with it but here's what I did.
1) boot dead machine in Target Disk Mode (iMac)
2) boot good machine off Snow Leopard disk (MacBook)
3) install OS to dead machine- I found this next part very curious. When the install was complete the MacBook restarted as the iMac.
4) ran software updates
5) shut down MacBook then shut down iMac
6) rebooted iMac- all was good
I actually did this twice because a co-worker had the exact same problem on her MacBook Pro. Got both fixed today.

Mac won't boot after the latest update. It is loading the update and suddenly shuts down

My MacBook Pro won't boot after a minor update. The update was all fine and my Mac acted like it used to but when I tried to boot my Mac it just loads the the update then goes back to the Apple logo and then shuts down.
I hope that someone has got a solution because I do not want to restore my Mac for the 4th time.....

Mac won't boot after leopard install

hi - installed leopard on my imac but now my mac won't boot:
i have already tried the following:
1) safe mode - but won't boot
2) single user mode - ran fsck - said no issues
3) did target mode with firewire cbale to my macbook and ran disk utility - no repairs needed - and i can see all my files on original computer
4) reinstalled leopard from holding down options key - leopard installed again
but for all of abv - when i reboot i still get white apple logo screen and the spinning wheel...
any other way to get into safe mode - as that is only thing i have not been able to start....

tigerswim, welcome to Apple Discussions.
Did you already have Tiger installed or did you have Panther 10.3 installed? Tiger is not a free upgrade; you have to buy it & then update (for free) using the download updates from Apple. Also, you have to use a universal/retail install DVD (or CDs) to install Tiger. You cannot use the install DVD from another model Mac.

I'm not sure that anything but a clone or Time Machine backup will work with Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant. Boot from the Recovery partition and use the Restore tab in Disk Utility. Drag your startup drive from the left pane (the indented icon that has your internal drive name) to the Source window. Drag the destination drive (the indented icon) to the Destination window. If you are copying to a drive with one partition this process will erase the destination drive. If you are copying to a partition on a drive with multiple partitions it will erase the partition you choose as the destination.
After the copying process is complete you can try booting from the cloned drive. Restart and press the option key after the startup chime. Keep the option key pressed until you see the Apple logo and spinning gear. Select the clone and click on Return to select it. If it boots run the Kaspersky uninstaller. Then download a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner (donationware) or SuperDuper! (free and paid versions). Use CCC or SuperDuper to copy the fixed clone back to your hard drive.
If the clone won't boot, and it probably won't, you will need to boot from the Recovery partition and choose to reinstall Lion. I haven't had to reinstall Lion or install it to an erased drive so if someone who has done so doesn't reply to this thread post a new question asking how to do it. It is my understanding that one is able to reinstall Lion over the existing installation or choose to erase the drive using Setup assistant to bring over your data from a clone. If you have to erase and install you will want to boot from the the Lion installation and clean off all the Kapersky stuff by searching for it (include invisible files in your search). Then you can use Migration assistant to bring your data back from your clone.
There is also a possibility that you can remove the Kapersky stuff by booting in single user mode. One you have your data copied to a bootable clone you could post a question about how to go about finding and removing the files in single user mode.

Mac won't boot after I pressed the power button for it to sleep

Ok so, I decided to take a break and instead of turning off my PC, I put it on sleep by pressing the power button...and screen obviously goes black.
After an hour and a half I decided to return to my PC...and on pressing the power button it won't boot (nothing: no sound or sign of life).
Thought it may be due to the battery, however seems like it's fully charged as when I connect my adapter to it, the led light is green....
What am I going to do???? And I don't download or watch films or anything of the sort!!!!!!

I recently installed Mountain Lion to my macbook late 2009 model. Now it won't boot, goes into this cycle of trying to start and then off.

Try holding the Shift key when booting, to see if the system will start up in "Safe Mode" (by only loading essential services and extensions).

I attempted to install windows xp on my imac (leoppard). After being looped through the same cycle without any signs of progression, and being unable to exit the installation using the F3 command, I hard rebooted my computer. Once I restarted it, the mac chimed, but remained greyscreened. I attempted to unplug my computer, and met with no success. I tried holding down the x key- which I read on another thread, that didn't work either. I have no way of manually removing the xp disc from the disc drive, as its built into the moniter of my mac... what can I do?

not starting in safe mode. =0/ beginning to look like my poor mac may need an appointment with the apple store.
i did however get the disc out- i used the keyboard that originally came with the mac and held down its eject key upon restart. Now the only issue is that it will not fully boot.

Mac won't boot after 10.4.6 install

I've just finally purchased Tiger. I did the install and now when it restarts it gets stuck at the apple and the twirling circle. I checked both the disk and permissions using the install disk utility. Everything was fine. So I reinstalled Tiger and ended up with a red circle with a line through it. So I reinstalled again and got as far as the apple and circle again. Can anyone tell me what is going on? I've used Macs since the Plus. Help! Thanks

PS - I'm trying to go from 10.3.9 to 10.4.6

BTW my os9 disk boots and runs wonderfully. That said I have 25% free space and the memory is Kingston. I have a G4 400mhz with 384 meg ram that runs fine under osx 10.4.9. Perhaps the osx drive is about to die or I just need to erase it and start over. When booted verbose it gets to Launchd and stops with errno 2. The installer disk is a non specific family pak. Should work fine with this machine. I'm checking the hard drive today even though TTPro says it is ok. I'll post back.

Mac Won't Boot after Boot Camp Windows Update - Macbook Pro Mid 2010

Hello All, and thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.
I have a Mid 2010 Macbook Pro. Last year I upgraded the RAM, then this year I decided to upgrade the hard drive to an SSD-hybrid. Everything went perfectly smoothly with both upgrades, and I was a happy camper.
I had also installed Boot Camp with Windows 7 and everything worked perfectly. Then last night, I boot in to Windows 7 and it gives me a 'service pack update'. After installing it, I had to reboot my computer. Rebooted it and it accidently started booting OSX. No problem, I thought. I held down the power button, and booted back in to Windows. The service pack installation continued and it had me restart my computer an obscene amount of times during the installation. This is when I initially thought "this is weird".
Finally the service pack installs, and I'm able to use Windows 7 again. Then I shut down the machine and tried to boot back into OSX. No dice.
Here's how the OSX booting process goes:
First, the Apple logo appears, then what appears to be a progressive loading bar at the bottom. After a few seconds, the loading bar disappears. Then it's just at the Apple booting screen with the spinning wheel/gear and sits there indefinitiely. I let it sit there for over an hour last night and nothing happened.
Any suggestions? I tried resetting the NVRAM and the SMC.

It looks like a hard disk problem. Press Command and R keys on boot, open Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD in the sidebar and repair your drive

Mac won't boot after superdrive replacement

Hello,
I have a macbook pro 1,1 15", 2ghz regular duo, 2 GB ram. I recently bought a macbook pro 1,2 on the cheap (with the core 2 duo and wireless-n) because it had a fried logic board.
I upgraded my battery, hard drive, and wireless card from the fried one, no problem (I'm typing this post on my new gear! but I when I connect the new superdrive, I can't get it to boot.
Nothing even spins up - I hear the hard drive almost spin but then immediately click off.
I'm assuming some POST fails or the PRAM is unhappy and it just kills the startup process..
The new one is a Hitachi GSA S10N and the old one is a Matshita UJ-857.
Is there anyway to flash the PRAM or somehow convince my mac to boot with the new drive? It's dual-layer and my old one isn't, so I'd be stoked to get it.

Mac Won't Boot after install

I have had Tiger for a few years now, So i finally decided to upgrade and bought Leopard 10.5 from an online website, I installed it on my mac and when i try to boot it up on my internal harddrive (where i installed it) all it does is just boot up.. go to a blue screen for 2-3 seconds and then it alternates between a black and brown screen with a beachball as the cursor.. So i've tried to reinstall and all that stuff and i even partitioned and installed it on my External 1T harddrive that i just bought and i am now booted up on that.. When i installed it on my 1T all that happened during bootup was a short delay at the blue screen 2-3 seconds.. and then the brown screen came up followed by a black screen which lead me to the welcome video/intro type thing. I've tried running the machine on my internal harddrive for several minutes but that did not provide any results either. I've tried to repair permissions, repair disk, erase and install all that stuff. The HD "appears to be okay" so i don't know what to do anymore...

It sounds from your postings that either this original Leopard DVD is not one or you have serious hardware problems if is.

Mac won't boot after installing some apps in XP.

I originally installed Boot Camp and XP Pro (with numerous apps) and everything ran great for about a year. Somewhere along the line, Windows XP became very slow and cumbersome. I decided to delete the partition and reinstall XP. That part went great. The problems started when I began to installed the same numerous apps that were on there before. Something happens to the Mac and it will not boot. All I get is the gray apple screen, but no turning pinwheel. If I go back into XP and do a restore back to the point before I installed whatever software caused the problem, It will sometimes allow the Mac to boot....never know for sure. Is it possible that one of the Mac updates has caused the Mac system to be vulnerable to what is installed on the XP side? I have my fingers crossed for some good results from Snow Leopard. Anyone had the boot problem like this though?

Mac won't boot after disk repair -Yosemite

yosemite slowed my MacBook Pro down to a crawl... Even just opening iTunes took forever.
Ran disk utility, then disk repair in recovery mode... and now my my Mac just turns off about 40% into start up. Can only start up in Recovery mode now.
Ironic how apples own disk software is what caused this catastrophe.
I back up annually to Ext hard drive so all is not lost, but I'd like a chance to recover my most recent files and downloads from the last 6 months, if possible?
