Mac won't eject disc

I have a disc full of photo's stuck in the disc drive on my imac.  When I try to eject it, I get a spinning rainbow circle and have to do a hard shut down.  It sounds like it is trying to eject it, but then gets hung up.  Any advice?

Force eject a stuck cd/dvd
First try the normal methods to remove the disc. Drag its icon to the Trash can in the Dock or select 'Eject' from the File menu.
If you are running a virtual machine, e.g. VMFusion, ensure that the CD is disconnected from the virtual machine. This will sometimes allow the CD to now show up in Mac OS X.
Shut down the computer and start up whilst holding down the mouse button. This may take some time, but keep your finger on the mouse button right up until the disc comes out or the log-in screen has appeared.
If you have Toast Titanium installed on your computer, choose EJECT DISC from the menubar.
Sometimes you can successfully use the eject disc button in iTunes even if the disc is not visible to the Finder
Open Disc utility and choose the disc you wish to eject in the left-hand pane, then click on the Eject button.
Some Macintoshes have a paperclip hole that you can insert a straightened paperclip into, manually triggering the eject mechanism.
Open Terminal and type "drutil tray eject" to eject the disc/tray, and "drutil tray close" to close the tray.
If your computer has an eject button on the keyboard, restart the computer holding down the Option key. When the startup disk selection screen appears, let go of the option key and press the keyboard's eject button.

  • Hi. Having trouble getting the superdrive on my daughters circa 2009 mac mini to eject discs.  Even the 'hold down mouse button on restart' trick isn't working now and there's a disc stuck in the drive. Anyone out there with a fix? Here's hoping :-)

It doesn't seem to matter whether it's a DVD or a CD it just won't eject :-(

Is there a very small pin hole, just inside the drive opening on the right? If true, you can very gently press the tip of a paperclip into this hole (with the machine on) to eject the disk.
With the mini off. Turn it upside down and thunk the bottom with your hand a couple of times. This may dislodge that stuck drive sufficiently to allow normal eject.
It may be possible to (again gently) pry up on an edge of that stuck disc with an old, unused credit card.
If you made it this far, better make an appointment with an Apple store to have the drive removed, disassembled, and reinstalled. If you go this route, might as well upgrade the memory too if it needs it.

  • Mac will not eject disc, mac will not eject disc

My mac will not eject a Drive Genius 2 Disc and if you reboot computer it just pops disc menu back up and wont let you do antything.

Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
      1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
left mouse button until the disc ejects.
      2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
      3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
      4. Press COMMAND-E.
      5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in
your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
            /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

  • HP Envy 15 Optical Drive Won't Eject Disc

I tried to burn a DVD and loaded a DVD-R into the optical drive. Burned the disc, now the disc won't eject. I try restarting the computer and going through Computer to eject, and nothing. It sounds like it tries to eject, fails, takes back in the disc and runs it.  This is definitely a problem, considering I'm a filmmaker and need to produce this DVD soon.
Please tell me I don't have to wait for an HP tech to take my computer for a week and a half to fix my brand freaking new notebook that I dished out over a thousand dollars for. This kind of thing is infuriating. And it seems others share this problem. So I wonder why it wasn't fixed.
Thank you in advance for all the help.

  • Combo Drive Won't Eject Discs

My 1G MacBook that just came home from being repaired by Apple won't eject my installation disc. I'm downloading updates for my MacBook at the same time but I don't know if that's why it won't eject. Is there a problem with my combo drive?

Never mind. I was using a program that required the disc and I thought the installation was done.

  • Mintel Won't Eject Disc.

Being a mac newbie I thought I was doing something wrong but this is not the case. Here's the skinny. I insert the game, if I hit the eject button or drag to trash, it will eject. Now if I insert the game and launch the game after quiting the game I can not get the CD to eject by using the eject button. now if I re-launch finder I can eject the disc via the eject button. Any ideas? Could it be rosetta since it's not a universal game?

oh yeah, why didn't I think of that-
Just reboot, while holding down the mouse button- eberyvody know dat. Why would you waste time looking for an eject button, silly, when you can reboot .... .... ew, reboooot.... and hold down the mouse??
    efficient!
    how bout this:
I'm in the library studying with one of the University's one-of-a-kind golden diamond do-not-leave-the-Uni-Library-with- or we charge you $25/hour CD's in my $2500 Apple Powerbook [Uni suggestd, Uni vended, sold on a Uni loan] ...
when the 8-hour rated Apple battery drops dead - at exactly 1 hour.
"Not to sweat", thinks I. "I am done here and I shall soon leave. Now I'll just pop the CD out: reboot, and hold down the mouse, reboot- ew, wait a sec, the batteries dead!"
and of course the sucker won t reboot, the mouse button does not hold down and the CD? it wont eject, it wont fall out, you can t shake it out or pull it out, AND THERES NOT EVEN A PAINTED ON EJECT BUTTON or a place to poke a paperclip into. And the newest '06 model is the same! h e l l ! I had come to a desicion: a 3-hour round-trip bicylce trip tp retrieve the power block [yes the one that shorts out regularly]
or a huge library fine. And Apple already had my money.
Apple has one thing one their mind lately:
selling new iTunes products. IF you want a computer,
be advised Apple has better things to do.
I have another story I like to tell:
AppleCare claimed for 3 months they "lost" my warranty when they "transferred the files"; then they lost my PowerBook when it was sent in for warranted repairs [re: the famous Apple 'Broken Hinges' and easily fixed]; then told me they did not have to repair it, because it was unwarranted still anyway... they kept this up for another 3 months, me without my machine and no loaner - No chance!- the whole time.
Now they ask us to pay extra for 'genius bar' access.
Lately I've given up on the warranty and I simply tolerate the abortion AppleCare has left me with.
So: Does anyone think Apple is "listening"? I know they are not at the most human levels. They apparently can't even distribute their 1st class mail in a timely fashion.
Apple's a worsening corporate scene. Dont buy Apple... unless you want some real snazzy white wire.

  • My Mac won't read discs. Spits them out within seconds.

Why would it just stop working? We hardly ever use it. It won't even take the Mac discs. Help!!

Ok, I have already done all of these steps and nothing has helped!  Here's my related problem, any suggestions?
My iMac won't even burn a single disc!  Everytime I insert a blank disc it spits it out telling me it's not blank and won't burn onto it.  I know the CDs are blank.  I tried 10 from a brand new stack!  I finally sent the playlist to my husband's PC (he has iTunes loaded) and he burned the CD fine using the same blank discs that my iMac kept spitting out.
Today I tried to play a music CD.  It spit it out in seconds of me putting it in.  I can play it on my DVD player, my husband's computer, my entertainment center, my car CD player but not my iMac  No explanation, just wouldn't accept the CD.
I DON'T KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON BUT IT'S VERY IRRITATING!!!
On top of all of this, when I upgraded my Apple Operating System the ChromCast program I was successfully using before stopped working giving me a Green Screen of Death.
    APPLE!!  ***!!!
Could really use some guildance here...starting to really give up on Apple...way too many problems with too many different items and no solution when my husband's PC is doing just fine!

  • Mac Desktop randomly ejecting discs

My mac desktop has recently started rejecting discs i wish to use.
It accepts some but has had a problem running dvds and the 'sims 3' games all of which used to work on the computer.
The disc will go in and i can hear it spinning and trying to run but then it will make a shuddering sound and eject the disc.
How can i fix this problem asap?
    Thankyou

Before you do that, you could try purchasing a commercially and retail available dry brush CD/DVD lens cleaning disc.
Sometimes these can ressurect an otherwise failing optical drive.

  • Won't eject disc- drive no longer recognized by system- 1-week old iMac!

Tried to burn something in Toast- I put in a blank DVD, and all **** breaks loose...
As long as the machine is powered up, I hear this slow "chugging" of the Superdrive, about a 4-second cycle, and in System Profiler, this is what I see:
"No burning device was found. If you are using an external device please make sure that it is connected and powered properly."
Tried to eject the disk by holding down the mouse at startup- no dice. OK, how do I eject a disc when the drive "doesn't exist", according to the system?
I don't want to reboot more than needed because I'm getting white screens and other joys when I try to do that...
Please help! It's a long drive to the nearest Apple Store...

Well, a call to Apple seems to have fixed the problem;this was the sequence:
    1) shut down
    2) unplug everything but keyboard and mouse (I only had a wireless keyboard handy)
    3) restart, holding down P-R-Option- Cmd (Apple key)- AKA zapping or resetting the PRAM
    4) keep holding down the keys, wait for 4 startup "chimes"- I only got 2 before it completed booting despite my holding down the keys
    5) all seemed OK at this point; the drive would inject/read/eject a commercially made disc, as well as a blank disc
    6) shut down the machine again, unplugged the mouse and the power cable (had I used a wired keyboard, this too), and waited what seemed to be about 3 minutes; this was resetting the System Management Controller
    7) plug the power cable an mouse back in, restart normally
Now I have to see just what device(s) might have contributed to the problem... I had a USB drive, a Firewire drive, and an older powered hub with which I attach my printer, EyeTV 250, a mouse, and occasionally, my iPods (shuffle & video) or thumb drives.

  • Mac won't eject external hard drive

    Hi!
I've a MBP 15-inch Early 2013 256 GB HD and 8 GB Ram, with Yosemite 10.10.2. A year ago I'd problems with the logic board and Apple changed it, two times. Now I've problems when using my external hard drive ADATA Classic CH11. When I connect it everything works fine, Time Machine does the backup, I can transfer files, no problem. When I try to eject the disk it grays out from Finder but stays like that and never ejects. When I try to open disk utility it freezes and I need to Force quit it. If I try to shut down the Mac after that it never does, it closes all programs but stays on without shutting down.
I've searched about it but all the people say that there's something wrong with my Logic board, this is the third one I've so I'm not sure I'll be able to convince Apple to make another exception to change it.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you!

  • Disc won't show, won't eject

I put a DVD in my iMac. It doesn't show up on the desktop and I can't get it out of the computer. I followed Apple's "My disc won't eject" advice (going into "Open Firmware") and that didn't work. Someone suggested holding down the mouse while restarting but that didn't work. I tried "burn disc" in iTunes thinking it would eject the DVD in preparation for receiving a blank CD but I got the message "Disc burner or software not found". In the System Profiler I get "No burning device was found". What do I do next??? Is there a paperclip spot?

Did you try to shut the computer clear OFF.
Wait a couple of minutes and then power back up,
It should eject and if not the farthest upper right corner key on your keyboard is the eject key, try it. Don

  • Computer Frozen, Won't Load, Start Up Disc won't eject

My daughter put her computer to sleep while the pinwheel was spinning. When we opened the computer, the screen was blue and nothing would load. We shut it down and turned it back on and nothing would load, the circle under the apple just kept spinning.
I went to the manual and it said to try Disk Utility.
I inserted the start up disc and followed the instructions in the First Aid pane.
It said, "First Aid Failed. Disk Utility stopped repairing MacIntosh HD because the following error was encocuntered. --The underlying task reported failure on exit." Yeah, that makes sense to me. Huh?
I tried to Verify the Disk and it said "Volume needs repair"
Again I chose Repair Disk, but nothing, it just hung.
So I tried to exit. THen I tried to eject the disc. But the disc won't eject.
I managed to get to the Installer screen and I went into Disk Utility to see if I could eject from there, but it won't let me. Now I'm running the scan again.
    My multiple problems:
    1. computer won't load
    2. can't eject start up disc

  • Disc won't eject, screen acting up

I don't know if this is a bi-product of my disc not ejecting, but when i restart my screen is just a gray color for a long period of time. I only recently got back to the main desktop. I have a blank disc in the drive, that won't eject. I have tried about every way possible to get the stupid thing out, but it won't eject. If anyone can explain the gray screen or why I can't get my disc out, please help. THanks.

    Hi tuckershort,
I think your mac sees the cd and tries to boot from it, since it can't find a system on that cd it gets stuck on the grey screen.
I know you mentioned "I have tried about every way possible to get the stupid thing out" but can you be more specific as to what methods you tried ?
Unplugging usb keyboard and mouse, then holding down the trackpad mousebutton while booting should eject it.
If that doesn't work i read a while ago that carefully inserting a creditcard into the slot and pressing down on the disk gently, then holding the mouse button while booting, should work.
