Mac won't play dvd that plays fine on my dvd player. 2004 commercial copy of Tour of Duty.

I looked at the dvd files and clicked the auto run exe. I got a message that my mac can't run Microsoft files.

A commercial DVD does not contain such a file. Where did you get this DVD?

Hi I just updated from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.
I write DVD's using Final Cut Pro, creating a DVD that plays HD and Standard Definition on one disk.
My problem is when I used load the disk on my G5 it would ask if you want High Definition or Standard Definition, now it just defaults to Standard Definition.(I'm using Apple's DVD Player)
    Can I fix this problem?

Addendum: I read on a post here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=420169) about removing some kext files in order to trick OSX into thinking that there were no FireWire ports.
I followed the instructions and removed from /System/Library/Extensions/ the following files:
    IOFireWireSerialBusProtocolTransport.kext
    IOFireWireAVC.kext
    IOFireWireFamily.kext
    IOFireWireIP.kext
    IOFireWireSBP2.kext
I restarted and BAM...Snow Leopard booted crazy fast and the mouse and keyboard worked instantly.
The System Profiler says "No FireWire ports were found."
So this tells me that the FW port is probably the culprit and is messing up the installation.
So how do I hack the Mountain Lion installer and tell it to ignore the FW port, which is obviously quite dead? Or is there something I can do to the Base system that is similar?

FC/e is based upon the Quicktime-engine; so, on 'Export using QT', you'll get all codecs & settings.
    but which one..
due to sheer popularity, YouTube became a 'standard' - I'm happy with the convenience, YT and the 'embed'-code offers - excellent quality, automatic adjusted to the watchers connection&hardware.
    my export settings are 720p, h264, 6MBit/sec - gives a - imho! - superb quality.
(example of a 'screen-test' from my latest project CLICK )
for creating so-called 'flash video'/.flv, you need 3rd party apps.
Sorenson Squeeze is more of an pro-tool, .. you need some background knowledge to get noticeable 'better' quality.
.. and the question is: are you willing to pay $.$$$ for that 0.x% more quality .. ? does your source offers such a 101% quality, which needs such affords?
if bandwidth is an issue, because you're hosting on your own servers, consider the free codec xh264, you can install as a free QT-plug-in.. with low or super-low bitrates, it offers a superior quality compared to h264 ...

IDVD won't read my iMovie.  I downloaded BURN, did as instructed and the DVD player still won't read the disk.

How do I export an iMovie '13 to a dvd that will read on a DVD video player?

Use iDVD to do it. Select and click "Share" at the top of the window in the menu bar of iMovie, and you can find "iDVD". But  have you got iDVD installed on your Mac? If not, please check https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4821 to reinstall it. If you have no iDVD installed and don't want to reinstall it either, you can use other DVD creator software to help you burn iMovie to DVD.

  • Successfully Created HD DVD that Plays in the Toshiba HD DVD Player BUT...

    So,
(I'm a student at Baylor University). I have successfully created several HD DVDs (on DVD 5's -- will try Dual Layers later this week) with DVD Studio Pro, and they play back on the new Toshiba HD DVD player. Got about 25 minutes of 1440x1080 23.98 MPEG 2 material (a short film of mine) in about 3.9 GB, and it played well and looked nice. It's no HDCam or anything, but it's very, very clean and watchable for what it is. (I based the encoding off of DVHS exports I was doing -- lo and behold, the M2V tracks are completely interchangeable.) A few notes, however:
A.) It only plays back the MPEG 2 based stuff. Tried the H.264 pre-sets, and it played like 5 frames a second, stuttered, stopped, and died. I'm going to do variable bit-rate comparisons to see if I can fit one of our feature lengths on a dual layer (at like 12.5 Mbps -- blech.)
B.) Can't get the player to recognize any of the buttons, either from templates or from created-from-scratch tests. (I have to manually tell it to play Track 1 to play the video track.)
So -- is anyone aware of specific scripts or instructions you have to put on the buttons for the HD DVD spec? I don't care about the H.264 as much, since I'm doing a lot of simultaneous DVHS exports and would like to migrate that over to all HD DVD. I'm probably just overlooking something simple and stupid (I certainly hope so.) I know, cutting edge and all that jazz, but it's really quite a bummer to be able to burn a nice shiny HD DVD version of my HD projects, but be unable to use my nice shiny menu buttons.
    Thanks,
    Josh
      Mac OS X (10.4.6)

No, you do not want H.264 file at all. And if you do use a H.264 it will re-encoded as a MPEG-2 file, which means it will be double compressed, which always results in a loss in quality. Also be aware that you are working in SD resolution, which means 740x480 for NTSC video, not 1280x720.

  • How do I make a HD DVD that plays on PC?

    Is this possible?
I have an .mov that is h.264 1280x720.
Is it possible to make a DVD of this in DVDSP that plays on PC's?
I was able to make one with HD DVD Standard, but that only plays on mac.
I'm sure there is something that I am missing or unaware of.

  • A video clip that works fine in windows media player but not in Premiere

I have an AVI video clip file that I recorded from an old VHS tape many years back. The file plays just fine in Windows Media Player but when I import it into the latest version of Premiere Pro CS6 the video portion shows nothing but a green screen. The audio track plays fine. I've tried using Adobe Media Encoder to change it into a variety of different formats. Some don't even produce a file and some do but don't work any differently than the original within Premiere. Any suggestions?
    thanx a bunch,

  • How do I, and what do I need to burn a DVD that works in a regular DVD.....

player, I burned a movie I got of of itunes twice to blank DVDs but neither one will play in our DVD player. What am I doing wrong?

If you have a Super Drive in your MacBook, you can use the Disk Utility to make a disk image from an unprotected DVD (for example, one that has been burned before is not copy-protected). As the "format" for the disk image, you can choose "CD/DVD Master". Once you've created a disk image, you can use the Disk Utility again to burn that image to a blank DVD.

  • DVD Studio burns a DVD that plays perfect on Mac but crops the edges on a DVD player

Has anyone ever come across this problem I have, where I burn a Quicktime movie from FCP (using Apple ProRes 422) and put it through Compressor - and when it plays on the laptop it looks perfect, but when I play it on my home DVD players, it crops the edges off? Like it's zoomed? I've checked the aspect ratio on the file and in DVD Studio and on my television setting, they're all correct at 16:9.
I'm going mad, had all sorts of help with this but can't find a solution! If anyone could help, I'd be extremely grateful.

What you are experiencing is "overscan" and is a function of TV displays.
Computers also have overscan but since you can dynamically resize to fit the display area, you don't tend to see it.
The concept of the "safe area" was put forward as a way to make sure that the important elements of your program do not get cut off on the sides. As David noted, TV makes/models have varying amounts of overscan (there is no standard) so to be conservative, the settings are around 10% of the total image.

  • IOS7 Doesnt Play Songs That Played Under IOS6

Fans - Here is the problem I had and the solution (based on my 2 hr conversation with Apple support staff)
Q - some of my songs either purchased thru Itunes or uploaded thru CDs did not play on my iphone 5 after ios7 upgrade (these songs do play on my windows based laptop which houses the library and other older ipod generation that still sync with the libary and play) - the problem is conflicts in ios7 and the way the songs earlier were digitized and stored by various record companies
A - I came across a very helpful apple support person who narrowed it down to basically the conflicts between IOS7 (newer technology and older (probably DRM conflicts); we tried many things and it essentially boiled down to the fact that because some songs were purchased in earlier years (eventhough thru itunes or uploaded thru legally purchased CDs) the digitized version of these songs conflicts with ios7 (there is no way of know which ones they are)...but the solution is simple though laborious.
Make sure you have the latest version of itunes download
    1. Delete the songs from your main library
    2. Go to itunes purchase window
    3. Click on not in the library tab (you will see the songs you have just deleted here)
    4. re-download the song and then sync your iphone and you should be able to play the song
If you have uploaded the songs from your old CDs then please do step 1 and reimport them again from your CDs
The reason this has to be done is because when you download/reimport the song "currently" it someone recognizes all the new rich features that are part of the ios7 upgrade, new itunes software (dont ask me why but it almost sounds like it needs to get cleansed based on the current version of itunes and ios7).
The challenge still is to know what songs are not playing vs what were playing in ios6. There is no easy way (you can delete all the songs from the library and then do a massive redownload - this will work for all songs that you purchased thru itunes acct). There is one feature that helps identify which songs may not play...for the song that is not playing on your iphone, if you touch the upper right corner while the song is playing (or so called atleast showing up on your phone screen) there is a symbol that looks like an edit screen...it will take you to the next screen that tags all songs that were purchased under the same album names...this will give you a list of those songs that "most likely" are the songs that will not play...in my case some did play but "most" didnt play.
    Hope this is helpful

It's also possible they just haven't gotten played. If you play your entire library on shuffle, essentially what happens is that iTunes creates a playlist of the entire library that is shuffled and then starts at the beginning and keeps playing through unless you switch to something else, such as playing an album. I believe quitting iTunes will also cause it to reset. Next time you select shuffle, it starts off from scratch. Depending on the size of your library and luck of the draw, somethings might never get played.

  • Converting project from mac to dvd that will run on tv dvd player

I took a movie on my iphone and put it together in imovie. I did a "share" "Idvd" to convert to a DVD format, but I can't get it to play on any TV DVD player. I also tried exporting as a "medium" movie and ran it through quick time. Once I burn them to a DVD R disc, none of them have run on a DVD player. Any help would be great.

When you share to iDVD or share to the Media Browser, you need to open iDVD and create an iDVD Project, which you should burn when finished, using iDVD.
It sounds like you are creating data DVDs, but come back if I misunderstood.

  • Mac won't boot realize that there is a bootable hard drive

I recently tried using my MacBook Pro to insall ubuntu onto an external drive. After restarting, and trying to boot from my mac hard drive, which wasn't touched, it doesn't realize that it is there. All it does is come up with the blinking folder with a question mark icon. When I try holding down the option key to choose the startup disk, it doesn't have anything to choose from unless I have the setup disk in it. I booted the install disk, and told it to boot from the hard drive, but still didn't; came up with the same blinking folder. I ran disk repair, there were no problems. It sees the disk from the boot disc, but that's it. I even tried restoring from the time machine backup, same problem.
    Any ideas?

Somehow your OS was hosed. This may have been caused by your attempt to install Ubuntu or it may have already been that way. You can hopefully recover as follows:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.
