Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine. Might also apply to new machines the first 90 days. BTW, the AppleCare Protection Plan's the best insurance policy available for desktop machines. Get it if you don't have it before contacting Apple.

I have a Power Mac 5 WITHOUT an intel processer/ I have updated my computer to snow lepord which is as far as I can go. I am unable to use the cloud. I used to have a Mobileme account and used it when I traveled to foreign countries yo read email. I do not know how to acess my email when traveling now. My email address is through mac.com. Please advise as there must be a way. We are traveling to South America soon for about a month and I need to know how to access my email from afar.

I think you updated to Leopard/10.5.x, Snow Leopard/10.6 is Intel only.
Actually you're in luck, you can still use iCloud for eMail on PPC using 10.4.11 or 10.5.8, but it must be IMAP, not POP...

how do I get OS X 10.6 on my OS X 10.5.8 Power Mac G5 with only a dual 2 GHz PowerPc G5 processor. I do not see how or where to buy 10.6. Am wondering if it won't download to a powerpc 10.5.8...any ideas how I can do it?

10.5.8 is as high as any G4/G5 can go.

It isn't the retail version, because that's 10.6.3.
Assuming it's the correct disc (i.e. the one that shipped with your Mac), you need to boot from it again.
OK the language page.
From the installer screen, ignore the continue button, go to the menu bar and choose Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
In DU, select your internal drive in the sidebar (the top item with the makers name and serial no.).
Run Repair Disk. If that comes up as disk OK, click the partition tab. Select the partiton from the drop-down above the graphic; 1 partiton is all you need.
Go to the options button and ensure that the partition scheme is GUID and the file system to Mac OS Extended (Journalled). Name the partiton (usually Macintosh HD), click Apply.
When the Macintosh HD volume appears below the drive name, quit DU and see if you can then install.
If the screen after the language screen doesn't show the menu bar, it may be necessary to use another Mac to do the job with the MB in Firewire Target Disc Mode. If it won't boot in TDM, or the MB doesn't have FireWire then it's getting very difficult. -

Flash Player version 10.1.102.64 is the last version available to PPC Mac users. However, this Flash version won't work for many videos on Facebook, YouTube and other sites. Adobe's latest version, 10.2.x or later, is only for Intel Macs. Adobe will not provide a newer Flash version for PPC Macs.
The message requesting that you download Adobe Flash Player takes you to Flash Player requiring an Intel processor. Doesn't work on a PowerPC processor. I found a hack, installed it & it works with Firefox, TenFourFox & Safari.
Download this http://www.steelbin.com/FPforFBPPC.zip to your desktop, unzip it, and replace the current Flash Player plug-in which is in your main/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, (not the user Library). Save the old one just in case this one doesn't work.

Power Mac G5 won't start up and is beeping
Dear friends,
This morning, my Power Mac G5 started to beep. When I try to restart it, it beeps some more and also makes a clicking sound like a metronome.
The computer won't start up anymore. At startup, it displays a grey screen with a little folder in the center that flashes a question mark and a finder icon.
What is wrong with my excellent computer, and how do I fix it?

Could be a variety of things, but most likely your hard drive is not happy. The flashing question mark means that the system is trying to find a working disk with a valid system on it. Should be the hard drive. Isn't.
Launch from the install DVD of the latest OSX system you have. Under the Apple Menu should be the Disk Utility. Launch it and try repairing your hard drive and see if that does the trick.
If not we dig deeper into this excellent problem.

I have an older Power Mac G5 running 10.4 11. Key chain seems to have locked itself ? When I go to open Keychain it is locked and won't open on restart or when I use my administrator password. I thought the keychain password was the administrator's password and that it would open on restart. If this isn't correct, how can I open Keychain ?

Help!! My Power Mac G5 won't start up!!
I was working on my computer when all of a sudden everything froze. I tried all the key commands and no response. So, I held the start button until it shut down. Then when I tried to start it back up again after a few minutes, by pushing the start button, only the fan starts. No start up chime. Nothing on my screen. Then the fan starts getting louder and louder like it going to explode! I quickly held the start button again until it shut down. I read through the manual and tried everything it said and still the same thing. I read through alot of the questions and answers on this forum...found alot of similar questions, but no answers that I can use. I tried replacing the surge protector, but still nothing. My business & life is on this computer and stupid me, I didn't back up much! Help!!

Power Mac G4 (APG Graphics) won't turn on

My Power Mac G4 (APG Graphics) won't turn on at all. This is not the first time, it also happened a little over a year ago and after about 9 months I plugged it in and it worked fine for almost six months. Each time there had been what could be considered "trauma," the first time we had moved about 400 miles and although it rode in the car with me, there was a lot stuffed in with us so it wasn't as gentle a ride as I'd hoped. This time we had an ice storm and I was actually using it when some power surges took place. It was plugged into a surge protector and everything else that was plugged in works fine.
When I press the power button, nothing happens. No chime, no light, nothing. I've pressed the PMU button and replaced the battery. I've switched to a different power cable. I've removed each of the RAM sticks and tried starting it while each was removed and after reinstallation. I've disconnected all peripherals. I'm stumped!
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!I followed the procedure I found through other discussions, but when I went to the link that was suggested in the previous post I found that I did one thing wrong. When resetting the PMU didn't work the first time, I continued to press it after each subsequent attempt. So after changing the battery, I pressed the PMU. After checking the RAM, I pressed the PMU, etc. According to the directions in the link, pressing the PMU more than once could wreck it completely. Does anyone know how to tell if I've done that or if I can do something else now? Thanks.

My Mac won't fully start up.. I push the power button, the apple sign pops up and the loading circle and then a bar loading and as soon as the bar is done loading the computer cuts off again. It's like it attempts to start up like it's updating something and then after the bar is full, it shuts off. Please help

Power Mac G4 Gigabit won't turn on
My power mac g4 gigabit won't turn on. When you press the power button on the front it lights up for a seccond and then it turns off and the computer doesn't turn on. If you hold the power button down the light stays on but when you release it it turns off again. only the light on the zip drive comes on sometimes. I have tried to reset the PMU but that didn't do anything I took out the battery and replaced it but it didn't help.

rcrickarbyfirst of all, i'm an AMIGA guy. i did my share of apple ][ programming in the late 70's, but this is the first mac i've touched (literally) since 1985 when i played with the original mac. in 2000, i finally went from the amiga (i still have lots of 'em) to the Dark Side and got a PC (QUAKE II, DUDE!) running Windows NT, then Windows 2000, now XP. i finally retired that machine this year - i gave it to a neighbor for his kids.
now back to the topic...
i'm working on a friend's G4 gigabit machine which had a bad power supply (no 28V output). as a replacement supply is obscenely expensive and they apparently die early and often, i've got an ATX supply in there (let go my ears - i are an engineer and i know what i'm doing).
i'm currently feeding +5V standby from the ATX supply (+5 always hot, even when supply is "off") to the +28V trickle pin of the motherboard power connector. i'm not worried about firewire or ADC monitors at this point.
besides the power supply hack, i'm using a PC mouse & keyboard (USB) through a belkin flip KVM.
the machine works fine now, except:
1) if i let it put itself to sleep (power saver setting), it wakes up brain damaged. the screen is corrupt, the mouse pointer is present and moves, but it's for all intents and purposes dead and must be reset. if i put it to sleep with a quick push of the power switch (throbbing power light mode) and then wake it back up (after waiting seconds or hours), it's fine.
2) if i disconnect the AC (even briefly), it won't power back up until i reset the PMU. i bought a new battery at radio shack today (didn't realize they wanted ****$19.00**9.00** for the thing until i saw the numbers on the register!), and i'm giving it an overnight charge with everything powered up before seeing if that fixes things. interestingly, i came home with the new battery, and of course the machine wouldn't start as i had left it unplugged. popped the old battery out, put the new one in, and it started! of course, i excitedly shut it down and unplugged the AC for 5 minutes, but it wouldn't start until i did the PMU reset
i realize that either of these problems could be related to using only +5V standby for trickle power, but keep in mind that previous G4 machines (yikes/sawtooth) also used "standard" +5V trickle power, so i'm not breaking any new ground.
what else might be going on to prevent it from starting up when freshly plugged in?
i'm looking at two solutions for the 28V thing - one is an off-the-shelf DC to DC upconverter which turns 5V to 24V (and can even provide 2A if i diode-OR +5V standby with +12V), and the other is something i'll whip up myself using an LM3478 and a big FET which can provide 1A @ 28V from 5V. either of these should be enough to run powered firewire things, but again no ADC monitor.

i saw a message in one of the system startup logs about the video card firmware being "too old". is there a way to update the firmware? here's what system profiler says about it:

one last thing - when the machine is asleep (throbbing power light), i assume the DRAM is on and being refreshed. how much current does that require at 28V?
i'm pleasantly surprised by how quickly it boots and shuts down. the "identify your keyboard" thing was weird, but effective. the UI is a little better than 1985, but still seems a little cryptic - and that's from a guy who still uses VI to edit software.
my only other apple experience since 1985 is an iPod Shuffle, which is cool once you get hold of a certain perl script to rebuild its database. until you do that, you're saddled with iTunes. i've only used (or tried to) the Windows version. i don't think i've ever used any software on any platform that was so LARGE, so SLOW, so INTRUSIVE to the rest of the system, and so COMPLETELY OPAQUE before (well, maybe ClearCase). dear apple - don't do THAT again. -
How do I find a previously passcode to link a wireless keyboard (Model A101urs6) to a Mac Power Book G4 running 10.5.8. The keyboard was linked at one point in the past, but then not used. When I am trying to hook it up now, it requires the passcode. Where can I find this, or is there a general number I can use?

Adobe Bridge CS6 (Mac) won't open .arw files from my Sony RX100. I was told to update Camera Raw to at least 7.2. I tried to download this but got a DNG Converter instead. Where is Camera Raw? (it does not show up in a search of my hard drive. There is a folder of camera profiles but no extension or plug-in with this name). How do I find out what version I have already? How do I get the correct version? . . . OR . . . is it the case that Bridge will never open Sony raw files directly and I will have to do a separate conversion process every time I want to use a raw file??. Can someone explain this?
