Mac won't read my external hard drive!

I bought a lacie 500gb external harddrive at the same time as my mac bookpro, the salesmen said it was a good drive and it would work seamlessly with my computer. I open the box and the instructions are easy: connect the power adapter to the drive, then connect the drive to the computer (I chose to use the firewire400 over the usb) then wait a few seconds and it will read the drive. After waiting the "few seconds" a message popped up saying there was an error and that the disk was not properly formatted. What to do?
The one thought I had is that the computer should be connected to the internet, which I wasn't any time I tried to connect the drive. Please Help!

Don't worry, it's not too bad.
A drive has a partition scheme and a formatting scheme. You can have a single or several partitions and there are several mehods of formatting a drive.
You can format the drive through the disc ultilty (applications/utilities). Once formatted it should show up (You can name the drive and select the format - usually mac OS Extended journaled) or FAT 32 if you want to use the drive on a windows PC also.
Some people partition a drive into 2 or more sections - with one section the same size as your internal HD for backup purposes and the rest for data. If you want to divide it up into separate discs (partitioning) you can do that from the disc utility too - just move the slider. If you are hoping to create a bootable backup on one of the partitions then make sure you use GUID as the partitioning scheme from options. Once you've moved the slider select each partition and make sure it is named and formatted.
Best of luck
(PS - If you think you might want to use it for bootable backup later- make sure you partition using GUID now from options - even if you only want a single partition - ie the whole drive. This is because if you re-partition later all data on the drive will be destroyed.

Why my new imac won't read my external hard drive??

    Liz,
Sorry for not responding sooner, I support your position completely - as for the external drive I assumed that the individual was a previous mac user and knew about that (my mistake) at home I have a couple of external drives
one drive is acknowledged regardless of format (mac/win) its a partitioned drive.... the other one - far as the mac is concerned does exist when i connect it.  I believe its a win only drive (will have to check the specs on it) but it works on the win-notebooks.
so my point of reference was coming that perspective, with no additional posts I have to assume you had the correct answer.  have a great day.

  • USB ports won't read portable external hard drive

I'm having a problem with both of my USB ports on my PowerBook G4. I am able to connect my camera, thumb drive and other small USB devices without problem, but when I try to connect my Western Digital 250gb portable external hard drive, it just makes a clicking noise and never appears on my desktop.
I'm pretty sure there isn't an issue with the external drive because I can use it when I plug it into my Belkin Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Hub (which is also plugged into the wall). When I first got the external hard drive, it worked perfectly when plugged directly to my computer.
I will be spending the next few months traveling in an area with limited electricity, so it would be very beneficial to be able to use my external drive without having to carry the Belkin hub.
    Thanks!

Im having the same problem. When I first got my Western Digital Passport (same as yours but 320 GB) I plugged it in to my 09 Mac Mini and it asked if I wanted it to be my Time Machine drive. I clicked yes. After that I let it backup my files once and then ejected it.i took it to my Powerbook G4 15" 1.5Ghz and plugged it in. Nothing happened. All it did was spin and slow down, spin and slow down and it made 2 clicks in between. After waiting like 5 minutes i took it to my only Windows computer, a Sony Vaio laptop from the same era as my Powerbook, and plugged it in. It said "Found new hardware" and went through that process. When it was done I went into "My Computer" to see if it had shown up. Nope! Yet again the **** hard drive failed to show up. So then I plugged it back in to my Mac Mini and reformatted it and made sure it was reformatting to the DOS compatible file format(FAT). After it was done I went and plugged it back into my Powerbook and again no luck. So I tried the Vaio and IT WORKED! ***!

  • Mac won't restore from external hard drive due to lack of memory

I downloaded a clock from the app store and upon starting it my mac crashed. Everytime I turned I got a screen that said to turn it off. I eventually restored it from the internet. However I had previously backed up my harddrive using time machine and wanted to resore it from the external hard drive I used. Whenever I boot up into restore mode and go through the prompts to get to the option to restore from backup it says that my mac does not have enough memory to restore from back up and it wont let me. Can anyone please help me?

It sounds like you had a drive malfunction. The least you should do is run the Apple Hardware Test before you try to restore.

  • MY MAC WON'T RECOGNIZE MY EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE

Hello. I'm the main user in my mac mini so I was trying to avoid my girlfriend from using the external drive, so looking around signed with my girlfriend user, I controled click the external HD icon in the finder and click on information, then I saw an option that I thought could give me the chance to avoid her from looking around at the external drive with her user, after several times trying to do so with my name and my password (I'm supossed to be de administrator) it kept telling me that I was not a sistem administrator. the external drive kept working but I ejected it to see if what I did would work (the other user not beeing able to see into my external HD) but my surprise is that no longer my mac recognizes the external HD. Do you have any clues on what is going on? It can be somethig with the permissions because looking at it with disk utilities it says that no owner activated neither S.M.A.R.T. Can anyone help me?
    thank you

Hello, I have two questions on time capsule  I can only have it on my external hd files and free up my internal memory to my mac  I can use an external hard drive, in my case a lacie rugged as shared memory for my two computers

I have a mackbook pro and an iMac if I buy a time capsule 2tb airport, I can use it with time machine and what would be the best way to use it.
There is no particular setup required for TM.. both computers will create their own backup sparsebundle which is like a virtual disk.. Pondini explains the whole thing if you read the reference I gave you.
and how to use time capsule airport whit other external hd to use my old lacie airport with the new time capsule
Up to you.. you can plug the external drive into the TC and enjoy really slow file transfers or you can plug it into your computer and use it as external drive.. which is faster than the TC.. and TM can include it in the backup.
Again everything is explained in the reference.. you are not reading it.

  • I have my iTunes music folder stored on an external hard drive.  I recently purchased a new Mac.  After attaching the external hard drive, all the songs imported without any problem except my Playlists.  Any clue about where they are or how to revive them

I have my iTunes music folder stored on an external hard drive.  I recently purchases a new Mac.  After attaching the external hard drive, all songs imported without a problem except my playlists.  Any clue about where they are or how to revive them for use on my new Mac?
    Thanks!

To retain your playlists, artwork, play counts, etc, you need to move the entire iTunes folder, not just the music files..
    Correct.
After that just select the new folder location in iTunes> Advanced settings.
    Incorrect.
    Hold Option and launch iTunes.
Select Choose library and select the iTunes folder.
This will read the iTunes library.itl file in this folder and the library as it was previously will be opened.

  • I am new to a MAC.  I have an external hard drive that I used with my Windows XP computer.  Can I reformat it

I am new to MAC.  I have an external hard drive that I used with my former computer running Windows XP.  Can I reformat it to use with my new MAC?  If so, how do I do it?

Yes you can. See the following:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • Installing Mac OS X onto an External Hard Drive

Will installing Mac OS X onto an external hard drive erase or mess with in any way files that are already on the external hard drive?
Can I safely install Mac OS X to an external hard drive that already has stuff on it to make it a bootable volume and still be able to access those initial files on the hard drive?

Not unless an Erase & Install is performed.

  • Why did lion stopped reading my external hard drives?

I have a MBP which used to work fine with snow leopard, had also Paragon's NTFS software to allow reading my external hard drives (Western Digital's My Passport and Passport Essential with about 2.5 TB worth of data, music, photos, etc.) I decided to upgrade to Lion and after that... poof! my hard drives will show grayed on the disk utility with the "not mounted" message and my MBP will not read the data, even though it can access them, run the WD utility, unlock the drive but... nothing.
Any ideas on how to fix? I event spent the morning yesterda wit the Geniuses at the Apple store and they were clueless too. I did show them on a couple of snow leopard machines my data but they could not understand how to explain he issue. I loaded the WD's drivers for Mac (OS  X Lion support as advertised on their website) but nothing happens.
Fortunately I can still read my data on any other computer (my kids MB's, my office Windows, etc) but it is truly dissapointing that Lion has brought down all the good stuff Mac / Apple had been known about.
    Any takers to this one?

Has the connection changed e.g. a different usb port?
You may need to allocate a permanent drive letter to the external hard drive.

  • Why can't iTunes play music from read-only external hard drive?

I have a write-protected external hard-drive which I keep all of my iTunes media on. iTunes recognizes all of the files, including the metadata on the id3 tags, and can find the files in Windows Explorer. However, it cannot play the files while the drive remains write-protected. Is there a work around for this as I would prefer to keep the hard-drive protected? Why does iTunes require write-access to play songs? Other media players have no problem playing from my read-only external hard-drive. Thanks for any help

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
When you say you can't play through both devices at the same time, what happens when you try, are you able to select multiple speakers, do they deselect themselves, do you not get the option or does it just not work when you select multiple speakers.
