Mac won't "Restart"

I'm having problems with using the "Restart" command from the Apple Menu-
I did reset the NVRAM as directed and it didn't help "Restart." (hold Command-option-O-F>typed reset-nvram>set-defaults>reset-all) When I use the Restart command from the apple menu, all the desktop icons disapear and just the desktop picture remains. The computer doesn't restart or shut down. Only when I push the power button in will it shut down.It chimes only when I start it up by pushing the power button. Any ideas?

Force restarting the computer like that can damage the directory. Backup your data, and then follow these instructions to see if you can repair the directory:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
If those don't fix the non-shutting down issue, repair permissions with Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility.
And if that doesn't fix it, try creating another administrative login to see if the problem is with some corrupted system item in the main user. Go to Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Accounts to create that login.
Let us know what happens.

Mac won't restart after updating to OS X Mountain Lion. Please help?

Like what happens?  Is it just spinning?
If you've waited sufficiently long (say 10 minutes) you could just hit the power button which will do the trick.  A little more gentle would be to open a terminal window (if you can) and type 'sudo reboot' (without the quotes) and enter your password when it asks.  That will do it too.

  • Mac won't restart during software update

I'm trying to install the 10.7.1 update. My Mac won't restart when I okay the restart -- it just goes to the log-in page. Suggestions? It's bad enough I lost info on on of my Lacie drives due to Lion. So now I can't update.
Thanks very much for any help you can provide.

Yikes -- "hosed"?  One of my LaCie drives won't mount. I went to the Apple store last night and the "experts" said that a firmware update will be released at some point, but not everyone is having problems. I wonder if I should reinstall Lion to see if that would help reset everything.....
But then, that's for another thread (which I started but no one could supply an answer).
    Thanks for your replies, baltwo.

  • My mac won't restart

My mac won't restart because I have an app running, but when I turn it off it tells me the same thing. What do i do?
This has been going on for about 2 months, and before than it worked fine.
I have run out of ideas.
I also know that my problem has not happen anyone esle, so please help.

Force Quit the App. Look in Activity monitor for the App that won't shut down. More then likely it is Mac Mail which is IMHO one of the worst programs ever written for any computer system. If it is Mac Mail that is the problem I suggest you find a different Mail program.

  • Mac won't restart or open preferences on Safari

    Hello Apple Users,
I have a problem with my Macbook Pro. My girlfriend installed a little while ago  a Browser Hijacker called "websearches". Suddenly, I used an antivirus which it found it and deleted it. My mac was safe apparently, the only thing that remained was the home page, whenever I start safari I have the webssearches homepage. So I tried to go on preferences, clicking on safari, to change the home page, but it won't open. Every time I click on "preferences" nothing happened. So I tried to re-install safari, but to do that I have to restart the mac. And it won't restart, whenever I click on restart the upper bar and everything on my desk disappear, but stays like that forever without restarting and so without completing the re-install process of safari.
According to my anti virus, there's nothing to worry about on my mac, but how can I solve this problem?

    1. Force Quit .
Press command + option + esc keys together at the same time. Wait.
When Force Quit window appears, select  Safari if not already.
Press Force Quit button at the bottom of the window.   Wait.
        Safari will quit.
    2. Relaunch Safari holding the shift key down.
    3. Turn off wifi and turn it back on.
Turn off Wifi. Click Wifi icon in the menu bar and select “Turn Wifi off”.
        Visit another website.
        You won’t have internet connection.
Turn on Wifi. Click Wifi icon in the menu bar and select “Turn Wifi on”.
        Select your Network.

  • Updated latest security software as prompted, now Mac won't restart....

The screen is up and running the little 'wait' thingy, for the last 12 hours. I don't want to turn it off and on manually until I know more, as my IMac crashed for no known reason once before and it was many dozens of hours of searching and experimenting before someone was able to finally get it back on. It was a software and not hardware problem, the store tech ascertained.
It has been quite slow since it was fixed, but working normally otherwise. The time I last turned it on, that morning, it started normally, but just starting Entourage took 2 full minutes, timed on a clock. The update alert came up and I chose to update just the security one. I didn't restart immediately as I had other programs up. Later when I was done with them, I clicked on the restart button on the update screen, and then it just wouldn't start up again, as described above. Is it something to do with the update?
I don't know why a powerful computer would run slowly in the first place, but this not starting happened with the security update's required restart.
New here, and I thank you for any help.
    Natalia

Your only solution may be do do a hard shutdown, press the power button until the machine powers off, then :
    Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
If no problems are found, start up normally, and please post back with what OS you are running and what the update was, but don't install it again just yet.
If DU finds problems it can't repair, then I'm afraid, unless you have DiskWarrior, you will need to take it back to the repair shop.

  • Leopard insallation aborted Mac won't restart

New to this forum so apologies if I'm posting this in the wrong way. I tried to install Leopard on my Flat Screen i Mac G4. Got the message that the hard disk would need to be fully erased before insalling Leopard. So, I tried to quit the install disk and re-start from hard drive - 10.4.11.(Tiger) Restart doesn't progress beyond spinning wheel /grey screen then turns itself off after a couple of minutes. I cannot eject Leopard disk and there's no manual eject option. (I've tried holding down mouse button etc)I can get back to Leopard install disk using c on start up but can't get out of this loop. I haven't got a complete back up (stupid...? yes) so don't want to risk losing data. Any ideas?

You may have to guide me through this one....I'm not sure where I stand with my data. In terms of the Leopard attempt: I went through the language choice, the licence agreement, the destination volume then I got the message that said to install, the volume(HD) and data would have to be erased (or something like that). At that point I chose to quit using the quit option in the installer toolbar. The quit option still recognised the hard drive with 10.4.11 as its O.S.I never got as far as partitioning, formatting etc.
Not sure I really understand the PRAM option. can you talk me through that step by step. Is that all 4 keys command alt p and R together or in sequence? "earl"
Thanks for your help. Some good news - I've ejected the Leopard disk using the mouse button

  • Mac won't restart to install Leopard

In short, I need to do an erase and install for Leopard. The problem is that my computer will not shut down unless I do it via a hard shut down. This prevents the Leopard process from starting. How do you boot up from the DVD drive so I can install Leopard?

I'm not sure where you are in this process. Insert the Leopard disk. restart and hold down the 'c' key to boot from the Leopard disk. Then proceed with your Erase & install.

  • After Snow Leopard install, my Mac won't restart or shut down...

...and when I attempted to install 10.6.1 update, it WILL NOT restart, hence NO update. It's functional, but stuck. Any suggestions? What details/info. do you need to make a suggestion?
    Thanks for your assistance.
    Chris

    Hello Chris:
There is a reasonable possibility that you have a hardware problem (not what you wish to hear).
However, try a couple of things (if you are able to) in sequence. If the problem goes away, quit!
    1. If you have installed it, remove any third-party memory (OS X is notoriously picky about memory).
    2. Boot from the software install DVD while holding the "D" key down. That will invoke Apple's hardware checker.
    3. Boot from the software install DVD and run repair disk (not permissions, that is different).
    4. Reinstall OS X 10.6 from the install DVD.
If none of that helps, I am afraid you should go to an Apple store or Apple certified technician for diagnosis.

  • Mac Pro won't restart

We have a late 2008 Mac Pro that won't restart from the Apple menu, nor are we able to reset the PRAM with the keyboard. The computer will almost shut down, but hang right at the end, making the DVD drives click on and off.
We have tried the following to remedy the situation:
Run Disk Warrior, repair permissions, tried two other keyboards, start from a different system drive, start and restart from a new user account, disconnect each DVD burner separately, disconnect both DVD drives simultaneously, re-install (archive and install) the 10.5, install 10.5 on a fresh hard drive that has been zeroed out with Disk Utility.
We have removed and reseated all the RAM.
We have also unplugged the all cables and hard drives and removed the battery for 20 minutes to try to reset the PRAM.
We've used another Mac Pro and Target Disk Mode to run Disk Warrior on all the drives.
Other weirdness: the option key won't work on start-up.
The computer will shut down normally and start normally, but won't Restart from the Apple Menu.
    2 x 2.66 Dual Core Xeon
    16 GB RAM
    4 - 500 GB Seagate Barracuda drives
High Point RocketRAID 2322 SATA RAID - disconnected for the time being.
I'm struggling to think of other things to try and uneasy about using the machine until it works properly.
    Thanks,

Hi, I have the same problem.
Ever sonce day 1 when I first restarted the mac It did not work. The mac pro was delivered with 3 GB of ram. (2x512 and 2x1GB apple ceriefied).
So My question. Would it be able to restart when I pair the rams up?
I also purchased 4x2GB) OWC ram.
Curently the setup on the risers is:
    A) 2x512MB | 2x2GB
    B) 2x1GB | 2x2GB
    (667MHz)
What would be the idael setup for it (lot of Final cut studio work)?
I would realy like to get this problem fixed since installing programs on mac is very annoying when they ask to restart the mac and give no option to shutdown manually.
I could not return it then because I needed it a few days after to start a documentery project (MP arrived 3 months late after the first fell down of a truck or somthing during shipping.
Thanx in advance for you response
    Philip

  • Mac pro won't restart after replacing backplane

Mac pro won't restart after replacing backplane. I tried resetting PRAM, no luck. The grey screen with apple logo and spinning wheel shows up and the wheel continues to spin.

What did you modify 'under the hood'?

Have you just tried repairing with Disk Utility?
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

Acrobat Pro for Mac won't start, even after restarting the machine.  Any suggestions?

    Hi Patrick,
Can you please mention the version of Adobe Acrobat that you are using and on what OS version. Also mention whether this problem has started recently and was running fine earlier or is it a fresh install and has never worked for you.
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the product after you started facing this issue.

  • Mac Book Pro won't restart after GPU Panic

I have a 2010 Mac Book Pro with a known issue of GPU Panics, especially following Mavericks installation.
Have been limping along with band aid solutions until I can get a new computer, but today, following a panic, the laptop won't restart.
I press the start button, get the usual startup sound, get gray screen with Apple logo, gray spinning pinwheel for about 2 minutes, and the screen goes totally black. Machine still seems to be on, makes quiet noise.
Any ideas on how I can get it to restart?

    Katharine,
since you currently have Mavericks installed, you can try this: boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it reach the login screen now? (Your screen going totally black is probably due to the GPU problem.)
