Mac won't start up, no chime, no screen, just whirring!  Please help :(

I haven't used my mac for a two years or so and it's been sitting on top of my wardrobe since leaving college. Now that I have space for a better desk I set it up last night.
When I powered it up the power light came on followed with two loud beebing noises. There was no start up chime and just a blank screen, but the power light remains on and the "whirring" sound continues for as long as I keep it running.
I've tried resetting the PRAM - holding commandoption+rp, several times but with no luck.
I have also tried restarting from the original discs but with no luck.
I also tried to link my mac up to a monitor to see whether it was the monitor that is causing the problem. I linked it up to a LaCie CRT monitor but nothing happened when I started up the mac.
I would be extremely grateful if anyone had any suggestions or help on this matter.
I love my mac, it got me through college and I don't want it dead now.

The other thing you could do is reseat the RAM. A lot of times this is the case if the computer just starts up beeping. Flip the computer over and unlock the flip up access door on the bottom. Then after you have opened it remove the RAM sticks by pressing on the tan (usually that color) tabs on both sides of the RAM stick and pull the RAM all the way out. Wait a second and then put it back in making sure that the tabs click all the way in. They should be upright and fitted into the notch on the side of the RAM. If there are 2 sticks do it to both of them. See if that works for it. You will probably have to replace the battery also afterwards which is easy in that same access door you can pop it out and put the new one in if you have skinny enough fingers. The RAM trick should get it started though.

My mac won't start up this morning ? It has a full charge of battery and even plugged in it just shows the grey screen. Any help.

Please restart your Mac and hold the 'Option'-key to see your start-up discs. If you do not see any start-up discs it could be your hard disk cable that is faulty. This is a common problem with Macbooks, but I am not sure this issue has been fixed with the Retina models. I've had this problem with my 2012 Pro, and a new cable did the job. Very easy to do yourself!
You can also start Internet Recovery (need wifi or cable) and start up Disk Utilities to see if your hard disk shows up there.
    Please let me know.

  • Ipod touch won't start up beyond apple on screen, just keeps flashing.  Tried restoring but I continually get error messages but none of the solutions work.  Help?

My Ipod touch stays on the start up screen with the apple and just blinks.  I have tried all suggested
resolutions but none work.  I have tried to restore it but continually get error code 1611 or 9.  I have
tried all of those solution to no avail.  Any other suggestions?

If you tried all the suggestions of:

You likely have a hardware problem since the article says a possible cause of the 1611 error is a hardware problem.  I would make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

Have you just tried repairing with Disk Utility?
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

If it still does not work, Restart using your 10.5 Install DVD as the boot volume holding down C from chime sound to apple logo appearance, then after selecting your language from the menu bar go to Utilities > Disk Utilities, and run Repair Disk on your Mac's HDD. Afterwards, exit DU, exit Install, restart normally.

  • Mac won't start blinking folder with ?

Hello have a question, my mac won t start, it appears a folder with a ? Inside....can anybody help me.....

That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

  • Mac won't start (Kernel Panics)

    Hello,
My mac won't start up. It turns on, gets as far as the spinning circle and apple logo then a dark screen comes down with a Kernel Panic message. This occurred roughly three months ago and I ended up taking the mac into the regent street store where it was fixed under apple care warranty. My care has now run out, and the 90 day repair warranty has expired but the problem is back so obviously hasn't been fixed properly. Is there anything that can be done about this?
Every time I boot up the computer the message appears, I have tried rebooting with the safe option as well as re installing OSX from the original disks. The install completes successfully but upon restart it pops up with the original kernel panic message.
Luckily I have everything backed up so am prepared to try anything to get it running.
    Thanks.

Let us know, but since you obviously have another machine, have you tried Target Disk Mode and then Disk Utility?
use TDM to access Disk Utility.
    1. Click the First Aid tab.
    2. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    3. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    4. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.

  • Your Mac won't start up in Mac OS X (Mac OS X 10.3.9 or earlier)

I just got off the phone with an AppleCare agent. My iBook OS 10.4 wouldn't start - it just went to a blue screen. I'm happy to say that the agent got everthing working again and said that she would email me an article that would help if it ever happens again. She emailed me "Your Mac won't start up in Mac OS X (Mac OS X 10.3.9 or earlier)" I have 10.4, is this article any use for me or was I emailed the wrong articel. Is there an article "Your Mac won't start up in Mac OS X (Mac OS X 10.4 or later)"????

Thank you for yoiur response. I'll click on that link and add my input..
Don't be put off by the title. The document's just as
valid for Tiger, especially if those are the same
steps that fixed your problem. The article was
revised Feb 2006 and someone forgot to update it to
    mention Tiger. Go to
    <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464
, click on the It's good, but... link and
tell them it should be updated to include a reference
    to Tiger.

  • TS1411 My Mac won't start

My Mac won't start. I have tried all trouble shooting things like unplug and plug into a different power point. If I leave finger on start button, can sometimes get internal fan to attempt to start then stops. Please help. My computer is less than two years old.

Then, it's time for a trip to an Apple repair station.

  • I Mac won't start -- we get apple logo with spinning wheel, question mark that disappears and then a blank blue screen

My daughter's old I Mac won't start. It is not backed up.  We want to get some things off of it if we can.
When we turn it on, we get the Apple logo with spinning wheel for awhile, then a question mark briefly and then a sky blue blank screen.  Is there any hope of getting this to work?  This computer is out of warranty.  Does it seem that if we reinstall the Operating System we might find old data?

First try restarting with the original install disc an run Disk Utility to repair the drive. If you have to re install the OS make sure you select archive and install or else everything will be lost.

Acrobat Pro for Mac won't start, even after restarting the machine.  Any suggestions?

    Hi Patrick,
Can you please mention the version of Adobe Acrobat that you are using and on what OS version. Also mention whether this problem has started recently and was running fine earlier or is it a fresh install and has never worked for you.
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the product after you started facing this issue.
