Mac won't stayed bound to AD - System Log info included

I have a couple of Macs that continue to somehow un-bind themselves from our AD network. It seems to happen when the machine is booted or wakes from the screensaver.
When it happens, I re-bind the machine to AD and users can log in just fine until something cause it to un-bind itself.
The System Log shows: DirectoryService[45]: Active Directory: Could not determine closest Domain Controller from Site information in directory
Now, when I bind these machines I specifically set to prefer the local domain controller and not to allow others to be used to validate against. The reason for this is that this is a remote office and connecting to any other DC could result in some latency. I'm not real sure how picky Apple AD plugin is for getting a response from a DC within a certain amount of time.
Any ideas would be much appreciated and tested! Thanks

Until an expert gets here... I'm thinking that some Macs don't do this... only a couple!?
I wonder if it couldn't be akin to this problem... an AD version of it though...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304482
Which, btw, the exact symptoms and connection and Hardware types, are wrong in the article, it's worked for many others than the stated.
I'm not suggesting this'll work for you... just that it may be a clue for an AD way to try similar something!

    Hi Raghu,

    The System Log
The SAP System logs all system errors, warnings, user locks due to failed logon attempts from known users, and process messages in the system log. There are to two different types of logs created by the system log:
    キ Local Logs
    キ Central Logs
Use transaction SM21 to access the system log output screen. With this transaction, you can read any of the messages that are contained in the system logs. You can modify the view to meet your needs.
    Local Logs
Each SAP System application server has a local log that receives all the messages output by this server. The system log records these messages in a circular file on the server. When this log file reaches the maximum permissible length, the system log overwrites it, starting over from the beginning. (The location of the local log is specified in the rslg/local/file profile parameter.)
    Central Logs
We recommend that you also maintain a central log file on a selected application server. Each individual application server then sends its local log messages to this server. The server that you designate to maintain the central log collects the messages from the other application servers and writes these messages to the central log.
The central log consists of two files: the active file and the old file. (The location of the active file is specified in the rslg/central/fileprofile parameter; the location of the old file is specified in the rslg/central/old_file.)
The active file contains the current log. When it reaches the maximum size, the system performs a "log file switch". It deletes the old log file, makes the previously active file the “old” file, and creates a new active file. The switch occurs when the size of the active log file is half the value as specified in the rslg/max_diskspace/central parameter. (Note: the SAP System does not support the saving of old system log files. If you want to save old logs, then you must archive them yourself.)
If you use Windows NT or AS/400, then note the following:
Central logging is not available on the Windows NT and AS/400 platforms.
Per default, the profile parameter rslg/collect_daemon/host should be set correctly. However, if you receive warnings, then make sure that this parameter is set to NONE.
For these platforms, you can use the All remote syslogs function from transaction SM21 to read the data of all the instances in your SAP System. In the alert monitor, if you receive an alert, you can use the Remote syslog function to analyze the affected instance.
    Profile Parameters and File Locations
The table below shows some of the profile parameters for the system log along with their standard values:
Profile Parameters and File Locations for the System Log
    rslg/local/file
Specifies the location of the local log on the application server.
    /usr/sap/<SID>/D20/
    log/SLOG<SAP-instance_number>
    rslg/collect_daemon/host
Specifies the application server that maintains the central log.
    <hostname of main instance>
    rslg/central/file
Specifies the location of the active file for the central log on the application server.
    /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/
    global/SLOGJ
    rslg/central/old_file
Specifies the location of the old file for the central log on the application server.
    /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/
    global/SLOGJO
    rslg/max_diskspace_local
Specifies the maximum length of the local log.
    500,000 bytes
    rslg/max_diskspace_central
Specifies the maximum length of the central log.
    2,000,000 bytes
Any operations on the Database would be recorded in the attribute log of the db and it would be a file on the system - usually the attribute logs are set to a particular size and if that size limit is eached , the system will hang - ask the DBA to take a back up of the log and clear the current log file and you should be good to go.
    Hope this helps,
    Regards

  • Mac won't stay running, no internet? PLEASE HELP!

    Hi,
I have a 13" macbook pro.bought it refurbished and it was perfect- in january i brought it into a mac & pc repair shop since it was running a little slow and refused to burn CD's.
The problem they said was the operating system and the battery, so they reinstalled the operating system with an upgrade and the battery but now the laptop isnt running properly at all! ive never seen it so bad.
When it starts up it doesnt remember date & time, or network preferences. the battery condition says "replace" and when it does remember networks it wont connect as it says it doesnt have an IP address or has a self assigned IP address most of the time. and now wont stay powered on without the AC charger being plugged in even though its says its fully charged. The guarantee on the repair that i paid for isnt valid anymore.
how can i fix this? ive already reset the PRAM by holding down cmd, alt,P,R al at the same time as the computer starts up but hasn't helped.

  • My upgrade for Snow Leopard for my Mac won't stay in disk.

I have the snow Leopard upgrade for my Mac OS X 10.5.8 like they told me I needed at Apple.  But when I insert the disk it doesn't take it, it stays in for a few seconds then comes out.  Is there anything I can do?  Thank you.

Is Snow Leopard compatible with your iMac.? Check drive with Disk Utility. Does it read other disks? I think our experts maybe able to help. But will need more info on your iMac. Just my 2 cents.

  • My Mac won't stay connected to Internet after Leopard upgrade

Suddenly after upgrading to Leopard, both Safari and Mail report that Mac OS X isn't staying connected to the Internet. I'm using AirPort and a cable modem and it's always been reliable before. But now there seems to be something jumpy/fishy going on in the AirPort menu in Leopard's menu bar. The list of available networks changes very often and although my own network remains checked, Network Diagnostics shows that I am indeed getting disconnected often and for long lengths of time. But everytime I restart my Mac, my Internet connection is restored.
I had fully expected BETTER networking in Leopard, not WORSE.

    Jorge
So sorry, I have not checked back to Discussions til tonight. You have undoubtedly solved your problem. But just in case not...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107451 is where I learned about Soft and Hard Resetting of the Airport base stations. There is also a Factory reset that's not really on this page.
After I Hard set, I then went into Leopard's new interface for the AirPort Utility. Very straight forward to configure to set your station(s) up again. I've not had a problem since.
Again, soooooo sorry I didn't drop in sooner with this information.

  • My mac won't stay connected to the internet, and it has ethernet, it's not working.

My  mac will not connect to the internet and i REALLY need it to! like NOW!!! this is a big problem because the internet is its primary use. this is realy bad. its using ethernet and i have tried everything i know of and im so confused and i need help... any help would be GREATLY apreceated! tysm!

When I connect the Mac directly to the modem it will connect. My other devices will not connect to the Mac when it's wired to the modem.
When the airport is connected to the modem all devices and the Mac will connect to it.
At some point, the airport will drop the internet connection, but the green ligjht on the airport stays lit. Diagnostics show it's not connected to the internet. iOS will connect to the network at that time, so will Mac, but none can acheive internet connection.
My ISP is xplornet as I am rural Canada. Spoke to them yesterday and thier end shows I have a connection, so they asked me to power cycle the airport and it connected no issues. They also said if it happens again, as in drops during the night, that it's likely my router that is the issue. My signal is great, the waether is sunny and clear and nothing is blocking my reciever on the roof...and I am sad becasue I lubs the internets.

  • Mac won't stay on; fan keeps speeding up; then it goes to sleep every 3 min

What the heck is going on; its got a new logic board; its an older G5 PPC mac; and it keeps "going to sleep" on me; every 3 minutes.... is this the start of a hardware failure? In fact it even died on me during an OS installation....
Imac G5 PPC running 10.5 (trying to upgrade to 10.5.2)

It's unlikely that an OS upgrade will solve things, your problem is most probably a hardware, thermally related one. If the machine works for a little while after an overnight rest, the chances are very high that its heat related, and that in turn means hardware failure somewhere along the line. Ultimately, you will have to take it in and have it checked out. Depending on the model, you might qualify for one of Apple's Repair extension programs, however, they expire three years after the purchase date of the computer...

  • HT1338 the mac won't stay on unless you have it plugged in

hi everyone my baby dropped some water on my mac air in swich it dryed the mac is charge at full but will not tun on with puting the charger on at all time sometimes when it gors uo it says time is june 2008

Hopefully your MacBook Air is stilll in warranty or you have Applecare? If these problems are persisting after the MBA has had time to dry out thoroughly you need to make a complete backup and then get an appointment to take it to the Genius Desk at the nearest Apple Store or an Apple Certified Repair facility. I would not risk further damage by continuing to attempt to use it.

  • Lately my Mac won't stay asleep. Wakes up on its own.

I am running Mavericks OS 10.9.5.  Every night, I would put my Mac to sleep usually using a Hot Corner.  No problems, no waking up in the middle of the night.  In the morning, I just tap my trackpad and it would wake up.
It seemed it was no more than 3 nights ago and I woke up in the middle of the night because the monitor was on.  I did not wake the computer.  I thought it was just a fluke, but it's done it every night now.  I did a few tests, like turning off my router, not using the Hot corner, but using the keyboard to Sleep.  I unchecked the Lan wakeup option - although I'm sure it was checked before and working fine.  But, I don't need to remotely wake it up anyway.
I can't think of anything new that I have done.
I don't know how to troubleshoot this issue.  I tried looking through the Console logs, but there's just too much information there!
I have a Mac Keyboard - usb plugged directly into MiniMac. I have a Trackpad which is bluetooth.
I used to also have my external drive connected, but in the past couple of days it's been off!  (maybe I should turn it on?)
    It was working fine before.
I did read a post about something similar at iMac waking up on its own
I followed Linc Davis' Terminal Instructions and pasted Terminal results.
Does anyone -- Linc Davis are you there? --  Know what's going on and how I can fix it???
    Thanks for help!!

Thanks for the links Eric.  They did help.
After a lot of research and testing different things with my set up, I have gotten the behavior to stop.  I think I narrowed the issue down to my MacMini being connected to my newertech ministack max which I have an external drive, external usb hub, and external optical drive.  I had it connected via Firewire port and I think it got loose.  I was checking all my connections and it felt loose when I removed it.  After all the testing, I left it disconnected via firewire, because it has to be connected via usb for the optical drive.
Funny thing for me is that it was causing the MacMini to wake up even when the ministack main power was Off!  I guess it kept checking it or something via the firewire.  Off or On the usb connection doesn't seem to cause this.  It might have been because it was so loose, because it seemed to not do it when I made sure it was nice and snug.  But, I removed it because I don't know how it got loose and it really isn't needed.  the usb 3 connection is fast enough for me.
Thanks.  Maybe this information will help another user...someday!

I have also noticed that the finder window now opens in a small size in the middle of the screen rather than being aligned to the left hand side as like to have it set.
This problem has only occoured recently, i think after deleting some "relic" files using Cleanapp.
Any ideas on how i can sort this out greatly appreciated

I finally know what causes folders to lose their view settings - even if you have set them to "Always open in..." a particular view (but I do not know how to fix it).
The trigger is setting any window to "column" view. Try it.
    (1) Create a new folder, and set it to your preferred view (but not column view). Close the folder and re-open it to verify that it is in the view you have set. You can even set it to "Always open in..." that view, if you like (it doesn't matter).
    (2) Now open up any other finder window or folder, and switch it to column view. If it is already in column view, switch it to some other view and then back to column view.
    (3) Now go back to the folder you created in step 1 and open it. Presto: column view. (Aargh!)
I confirmed this with a helpful and sympathetic Apple support staffer at the Genius Bar in my local Apple Store. Unfortunately, he had no solution, but noted it as an apparent bug in the 10.7 finder.
This is an extremely reliable behavior, that I have confirmed on 5 different machines all running 10.7.2. It is also an extremely frustrating behavior that I hope Apple fixes soon.

P.S. I will copy this to similar threads where this is being discussed, in hopes that it is helpful. Sometimes understanding why something happens can make it a little less frustrating, even if you don't know how to fix it.

  • After installing Mountain Lion, mac won't let me type password to log in.

I installed mountain lion about 6 days ago and whenever i startup my computer it is really slow. Then when i go to type in my password nothing will type and i cant use the trackpad either. To be able to log in, I have to sleep my imac and then retry and then usually it will let my type. It is also really slow when i am running more than 1 program at once. Any solutions?

Are you clicking the password field or just tapping? Tapping does not work in the login screen.

  • When I boot up my Mac, Messages opens automatically. I quit the app, but it just re-opens itself. It won't stay off!!! I can't figure out what's wrong with it!

For the past few months, my Mac has been acting weird. EVERY time I boot up the computer, Messages opens automaticallly (I am runing OS X 10.8.x). I quit the app, but it just re-opens a few seconds later! It just won't stay off! I've looked it up online and nothing helps. I have no idea what to do!!!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Facetime won't stay on with my Mac

I have a relatively new Mac running OS X Mavericks 10.9.1. Facetime worked fine when I got my computer. All of sudden it quit working. I've rebooted. Now Facetime won't stay on. I see the FT window for a couple of seconds and it disappears. When I turn it on I get the following message: "The last time you opened FaceTime, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again?" Doesn't matter if I click "Don't Reopen" or "Reopen," the same thing happens, it comes on for a few seconds and then disappears. There is a red #1 sitting on top the FaceTime icon at the bottom of my screen. Help!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
