Mac wont sleep!

My Mac wont sleep. Also constant clicking/grinding noise. Tried disconnecting USB and Firewire connections. Running a Cinema Display with an DVI to ADC adaptor and this has worked fine for 2 years but suspect has something to do with the problem. Thanks

  • Cover to modem cable port, and my Mac wont sleep??

    1. Is there a reason why there is a cover on the internet port on the back of the Mac Mini??
    2. For the first month I hav had my Mac Mini, everything has been perfect. Now, when I click on the apple menu at the top of the screen and click sleep, resart, or shut down, my computer does nothing. It promps the message saying "If you do nothing, your computer will shutdown/ restart in x amount of minutes but nothing else happens after that. Is anyone else having this problem or knows a solution to these questions?? Any help appreciated...

    1. The last model 1.42GHz PowerPC Mac minis did not have a built-in modem. You need to purchase a USB modem if you did not specially configure your Mac mini to include a modem at the online Apple store when you ordered it. So, it might be covered if there is no internal hardware for the modem. (If that's what you mean by "internet port".)
    2. Try force-shutting down your Mac mini by holding down on the power button for about five seconds. Then, start it up again and hold down on the "shift" key. This will startup your Mac mini in "safe" mode. Safe mode will not execute any third party extensions or startup items, so any additional software, third party tools or hacks you may have installed should not be running. Can you shut down or restart normally like this? If so, then you must have some kind of software conflict. We may be able to check some of your log files to see what was happening. If you still cannot shut down or restart normally, then you either have a system-wide Mac OS X problem or a hardware problem. Let us know what you find out with the "safe" boot and we'll try to help from there.

  • USB WD Drive wont switch off when Mac Mini sleeps

Can anyone help. My WD USB drive remains powered when my mac mini sleeps. I have tried "switch off hard drives when possible" in the preferences but still no joy. Any advice?

    Hi Phras81-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple boards
Unfortunately the inability to sleep is a function of the drive itself. Which model WD drive? If it is a MyBook and you can return it I would suggest that you do so and get something else.
    Luck-

  • Mac mini wont sleep

Hey, just recently, when I tried to put my Mac to sleep, my iTunes locked up and wouldnt sleep. I closed iTunes, this time, before I tried to put the mini to sleep, but now another app locks up and doesnt sleep. Also, after my screen goes into standby by itself, when I try to rewake the monitor after several hours of inactivity, the light on the mini shows that it is infact on and such, but the monitor never responds (stays black), therefore it has somen to do with my Mac. Any advice?
    Thanks!

there is a lot on this forum regarding sleep problems. search away...
with apps freezing you may have other problems. for starters try booting with your system disc, find "disk utility", run "repair disk" and "repair disk permissions".

I have a 17" Macbook pro late 2011. I upgraded the ram from 8gb to 16gb last week and now I having trouble with sleep. When the laptop goes to sleep it always to seems to go into hibernation mode. When I open the lid I can only wake the computer by holding the power button for around 7 secs and then it does a restore from the HD. I've tried a PRAM + SMC reset. Also tested the ram and everything seems good. Below is the output from pm set, the console after hibernation restore (filtered for the word 'sleep') and the memtest. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi fatlinesofcode,
First of all, check out Apples article on the issue: OS X Yosemite: If your Mac won’t go to or stay in sleep If you find these steps don't help, try a few of the following
A common cause for the Mac not sleeping is your printer. If there are queued jobs waiting to be printed, but your printer is switched off, for some reason you Mac just wont like it and simply will not go to sleep. System Preferences > Print and Scan > Open Print Queue
Do you have an Ethernet Cable connected? People have reported in the past that removing their Ethernet allowed their Mac to sleep. This goes for other things you may have connected directly to your Mac also.
Try heading into your Mac Preferences > Sharing and deselecting 'Internet Sharing' as well as 'Printer Sharing'.
Also deselect Wake For Network Access by heading to System Preferences > Energy Saver > Power Adapter > Wake For Network Access.
Energy Saver > Schedule > Startup or Wake - Uncheck.
Alternatively, set your system preferences to Never Sleep, and put into Sleep manually: System Preferences > Energy Saver > Computer Sleep > Never.
    Good luck!

  • Leopard wont sleep, makes me restart every time

my powermac G5 wont sleep. It used to - until i turned it off for a week. Every time i try to sleep it gets the greyed out screen, and says restart. when i do restart it comes back on and says unexpected shut down.
    I have tried:
    unplugging all usb/firewire items
    reset pram
    reset scu (?)
passed a full hardware test from the installation disc
done an archive and install back to 10.5 (10.5.2 ruined my Bigpond ADSL modem!)
spent 2 hours on the phone to apple care (they do care, they just cant fix it!)
    Any guesses???

It's in your manual. If you don't have it handy, here's the list of PDFs.
    http://www.apple.com/support/manuals/powermac/
For mine, it's toward the bottom of the motherboard below the memory slots. Earlier Power Mac G5's may be different.

The mac hasn't ever given me any problems, it has been since plugging my new iphone 4s into it,
As i havent had internet at my home for quite some time i dont know whether the fact the iphone was at a much newer version than the mac it confused itself????? help me please!?

    Hi there,
If you go to the Apple equivalent of: Appdata\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates (sorry am a mere PC user )
If there is a file titled iphone1,22.1_5F136Restore then try deleting it and then running iTunes without your iPhone attached.
Go to the menu and select Help/Software Updates which should then notify you that there are updates and allow you to download them in advance of restoring.
Hopefully this will download the update. Once completed attach the iPhone and restore.
Hopefully this might sort your issue out.
    Ciao

I my mac wont recognise my password, i have tried to reset password using single user but my mac wont stop at single user it just continues to root, how do i get it to stop at single user so i can add info needed to reset password?

Are your sure that wasn't a Verbose boot (Cmd-V) you were trying? That would go on to a regular boot.
Try a PRAM Reset, then try the single user, Cmd-S, at the startup chime. For the PRAM Reset, hold down Option - Cmd - P - R all together until it chimes a total of three times, then let go to finish booting.

    Hi there Peter,
Not cheap anyway you look at it sorry, professional Data Recovery being the most expensive.
Unfortunately, Disk Utility can't fix all that much, and the only other Apple Options are erasing the HD, or installing OSX to a second drive, then using Migration Assistant to move stuff over to the new HD.
If Disk Utility or fsck should fail to repair it, your best bet is DiskWarrior from Alsoft, you'll need the CD to boot from if you don't have another boot drive...

This one would require another HD with plenty of space to recover to.
You should use another Boot Disk or other Mac with this one in Target mode to do the recovery.
They have a free demo to see what it could recover.

  • Macbook - Unplug AC power and Mac enters sleep mode

I am using a Macbook with a Dell 24 inch monitor, external keyboard and mouse. The lid is usually closed and I am familiar with the best practices how to use sleep mode.
I have now found that, in the above scenario, unplugging the power cord puts the Mac to sleep immediately. The batter is charged at 99% or better.
The reason why I want to unplug: let it drain to condition the battery according to Apple recommendations.
I am aware of the workaround: disconnect external peripherals, let Mac run on battery until it is drained (I like to think that the peripherals perhaps are part of the issue here).
I was simply wondering if putting the Mac to sleep when AC power is disconnected is a feature, or if anyone here has a suggestion. This has not previously happened to me when I used the Mac without the monitor/keyboard.
    Thanks!

It requires the power adapter when using an external display. The electronics to drive a DVI port uses some power, and they assume power must be available if you have some place to plug in the external display, so they don't allow it to run an external display on battery only. To drain the battery, disconnect the external display, and run it at full brightness with the llid open and Energy Saving system preference set to never sleep the drive, display, or computer, and to run for maximum speed. You only have to calibrate a battery once. NiCads needed conditioning. Lithium-ion don't. Under some conditions you might extend the life slightly, but full discharges reduce life, so getting it just right is unlikely.
