Claire, please post your machine specs as requested. There are some variants of the MBP with specific hardware issues. Example: the older "silver key" MBPs with 2.2Ghz and faster processors can have a defective video chipset that produces a black screen or distorted video. That problem is covered under an Apple program that will fix this at no cost to you if you computer is that model.
Do "About this Mac" from your Apple menu and, in the resulting window, click the "More Info..." button. That launches System Profiler for you. The first screen looks like this:
The second line, "Model Identifier" (or "Machine Model" if you are running OS10.4) precisely identifies your MBP variant. Post that, and include it in your equipment info in your profile for future posts. That means people don't have to ask, and you get faster help that is targeted to your specific model. Saves everybody a bunch of keystrokes and you get better advice.

  • PLEASE HELP! MAC WONT TURN ON!!!!

My fellow mac users, I am hoping that ya'lls wisdom can solve this problem I just encountered a few days ago. I have a White Macbook 13inch and have had it since 2008. I just recently upgraded everything. New 320gb hard drive, 2gb RAM, Snow Leopard, and iLife 2011. I have been using it all for a month now and everything is running beautifully.
Last week, I turned my computer off, as usual for the night and when I woke, the computer would not turn on with the power button. I opened up the computer and dusted it and still nothing. I ordered a replacement keyboard from ebay and plugged it in and low-and-behold, It turned on. I wanted to make sure that the original keyboard was broken so I plugged that one in and it worked as well. Including the power button.
Now I just tried to plug the new one in and it doesn't work at all. But the original does. I am worried if I turn off the computer again, I won't be able to get the mac back on. If anyone has ANY suggestions, they would be most appreciated. I don't want to take it to Apple because I know they will charge me $400 for this computer and I clearly don't have that. Any advice would be most gracious!
    Thank You!

Did your replacement regimen include a new battery? Have you ever calibrated the battery? : http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/9036.html
    Reset the SMC? : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?viewlocale=en_US
Does it start normally when the battery is removed entirely?
Does the Magsafe adapter still show a green light when connected and fully charged?
To check the number of cycles and 'health' of your battery, click on Apple in the menu bar, About This Mac, More Info, and Power. 'Average' lifespan of the standard battery is considered to be about 300 cycles, and a removable MacBook battery typically registers at least 4800-5000 mAh fully charged when brand new.
Last possibility that comes to mind is that you're wearing out the power switch if you indeed turn it off every night. In my experience, OS X is stable enough that I often leave mine run for weeks without a restart. I just close the lid when I'm not using it.

Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on
    Memory or hard drive space?
When you can get the Mac to boot, click About This Mac from the Apple () menu then click More Info then select Storage.
Make sure there's at least 15% available disk space.

  • My Mac wont turn on

I try turning my mac on and no screen pop up it goes black and the fans turn into airplane fans. About a month ago it had the same problem but never fixed it but back then it turned on let me sign and then the screen goes on then off on then off so i restart it and it was dead. I reset the PRAM and SMC still nothing. Help. Thanks!

Think of coming here as being like calling the auto mechanic when your car won;t start--if you don't tell him your car's make, model and year, he will have to ask for that before he can begin to help. Same here except the delay in your getting help is many times longer.
Kappy's suggestion is spot on if your Mac is less that about five years old. However, the Macs this forum section supports were made between 1998 and 2006 and Apple cannot do much with them. Many "Apple Geniuses" were still riding in child seats when the first PowerMacs were made.

  • My mac wont turn on and keep rebooting

    can please anybody help me?
my mac suddenly won't turn on and keep rebooting half way then turn gray green and shut down
i dont know what to do

I suspect the HD is failing.
If you reboot holding the option key, I would expect it shows your Macintosh HD as a bootable option.
You can try running Disk Utility from the Recovery and Repair Disk to see if it shows any problems, but this is probably not the cause.

  • Help!!!  my mac wont turn on......

I have an imac that's like 5 years old and just recently it started running slower and slower and then one day it froze up so I tried to reboot it and now it won't turn on :(  i turn it on and it goes to the grey screen with the apple but stays on it unusually long, like 10 mins.  Then it switches to a blue screen where it stays on for like a min, which after that it just goes blank.  It appears my mac is still on but there's no display or anything.  Is there anything I can do?

How much free disk space is on that boot drive?  You should leave about 20GB to 25GB free for the OS.
As a first step boot from your installer dvd and run Disk Utility from there to repair/verify your boot drive (not repair permissions).

my ipod nano 5th gen. wont turn on and is not being recognized on my mac or itunes

What have you tried so far in terms of troubleshooting?  After leaving the Nano to sit and charge for at least 30 minutes, try resetting it by pressing and holding both the Select/Center and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear. You'll want to make sure the Hold Switch is not in the On position as well.

  • My mac book air turn on with grey apple icon and spining wheel. then it wont turn off.

my mac book air turn on with grey apple icon and spining wheel. then it wont turn off.pls help

Have exactly the same problem with my wife's MacBook Air. After restaring in Restore mode and trying to repair the disk (Disk Utility showed errors in the verification), the system tells me to backup as much data as possible (how?), re-format the disk and restore backed-up files. Error comes up when "updating boot support partitions for the volume as required".
Original restart action was done due to software update requesting it, if I remember correctly, iTunes was updated.
I don't want to start a painful back-up procedure (although I do regular back-ups): how should I know, where iPhoto stores it's data or where my mails are (yes, still using local mail)? How can I access the data if I can't boot?
My iMac's disk crashed also a couple of months ago and I'm still recovering. I have four Apple devices, two of them have failed. Can Apple afford such a ratio?

You are under warranty. You can call Applecare and get advice from the tech rep, or you can bring it to an Apple store or authorized Apple service provider.
