Mac zip file on PC

I have a problem when I send a mac zipped file to a PC user and they try to unzip the file
they are asked for a password. I didn't put password protection on the file and the PC user (XP) says they can unzip other files ok. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I have this problem, randomly and occasionally...ie it happens rarely and when it does I can find no difference between a successful zip and "password" zip.
It is not to do with e mailing. For example today I made a zip of six jpegs. I dragged it into my XP in Parallels and XP wanted a password. I then made a zip of six different jpegs in the same directory and dragged it into XP and it unzipped fine!!
I did the exercise because I had sent the bad one to a customer via Filechute and he complained he was being asked for a password, which is exactly what I found when I tried it my XP Parallels.
I have done "get info" on the files in the good and bad one and can see absolutely no differences.
I have tried zipping the bad ones with Finder, Filechute and Betterzip with the same result.
The bad one will open OK in Vista but not XP.
I use Filechute a lot to send jpegs to customers and this only happens about 1 in 50 times, for no apparent reason.
Really baffling!
Would love some help on this
Thanks

  • Unzipping Mac .zip files on a Windows PC

Does anybody know of a Windows program that will decompress Mac .zip (gz) files reliably? I've Tried StuffIt Standard for Windows but it quits every time with a warning, "Engine Error:Internal Error." Sure, I can make .sit files on the Mac and use Stuffit to expand them in Windows, but that's not the solution I'm looking for. If I already have a Mac .zip file on my Windows PC is there any way to open it without using a Mac?
I've searched these forums but all my searches come up with answers to the opposite question: How do I open Windows .zip files on my Mac?

A .gz file is not a "Mac Zip file" but a GNU Zip file, which is commonly used on Unix and Linux computers (OS X is a form of Unix).
You can get a gzip application for Windows here, or Google for something like "gzip for Windows".
Archives made by the Finder on a Mac are regular zip files (.zip files), just like the ones you would see on Windows.

  • Issue Opening MAC Zip file on PC

When i create an Archive of files (Zip File) on my Mac and send it to certain PC users, they come back telling me it says it's ZERO KBs when they unzip it.
Which is weird, because all the PCs we have in the office can open the Mac Zip files fine.
I thought it was because their winzip thing was out of date, but they are all telling me they are up to date.
Again, this is only happening to a select few PC users, most PC users i'm sending it to can open it fine.
Anyone have any advice on this or why it is happening to these certain PC users?
    Thanks

Select "Attachments" in Mail's "Edit" menu and set "Always Send Windows Friendly Attachments". If that isn't set, a Mac file may be sent in two pieces; the resource fork (often zero bytes), and the data fork. The PC users may be using different mail programs, and some are just seeing the resource fork. The data fork is probably there somewhere if they know how to get to it. The resource fork isn't needed for anything you would send to a PC.

  • Mac zip files won't open in Windows PC

I have been right clicking and compressing raw .mov video files to send from the UK to Australia via wetransfer. I am using a Macbook Pro with Mountain Lion. Each set of zipped files is between 3GB - 8GB in size and they (compress) and zip and send fine. But my client is on a Windows PC and only now tells me they are having problems opening the "zip" files I have sent them. They get the message that the zip is "invalid". Any ideas what can be wrong here? I tested them on my Mac by reopening and they work file.
    Many thanks in advance.

Step one would be to try them on a local windoze box. That should give you some indication of what might be wrong. Alternatively, try the Terminal command gzip. Read about it by typing in man gzip in a Terminal window and then pressing the return key.

  • CFFILE Uploading Mac Zip Files

I have a client who is getting errors when attempting to upload zip files from his Mac (No file). I realize the encoding is different and have been researching the issue without much success. In my attempt to solve the problem I have included every application/type for compressed files that I have been able to find.
The website is on a UNIX server running CF7.
If anyone has had this issue before, I would be interested in hearing your thoughts.
    Thanks!

Have you examined the form scope to see if there is any data there?
    <cfdump var="#form#"><cfabort>
Have you examinied the http post headers to see if the data is there?
There could be any number of systems that might be preventing this file data from making it from the client to the server.  I would start with trying to nail down whether the data is even comming into ColdFusion before I loose too much hair on why ColdFusion has a problem.

  • Zip files compatible with windows

window error when using Mac zip file "too many files"

If you select a single text file, then right-click on it and select Compress, I would expect this to produce a ZIP file containing just a single file i.e. the text file.
If however you select a folder then the ZIP file would contain not only the folder, the obvious files in the folder, but may also contain some invisible files like .DS_Store
Ok, the above is what I expected, I have just been testing this and this is actually what happens. A single file e.g. a text file when made in to a ZIP by right-clicking and selecting compress produces a ZIP file which contains the following
    thetextfile.txt <--- (the text file)
    __MACOSX <--- (an invisible folder)
__MACOSX/._thetextfile.txt (an invisible file in the invisible folder, this is not the text file itself)
So, yes it is more than one file in the ZIP file. By the way, you can 'see' what is in a ZIP file by using Terminal.app and typing the following
    zipinfo nameofzip.zip
You can use Terminal.app also to create a 'clean' ZIP file containing just the text file the command looks like this
    zip nameofzip.zip thetextfile.txt
Then to check do the zipinfo command again.
There is also a a commercial tool do simplify doing this, funnily enough it specifically mentions the __MACOSX folder etc. See http://gotoes.org/sales/Zip_Mac_Files_For_PC/

  • Any way to disable the automatic unzipping when you download a zip file?

For example, say I want to download a .zip archive, and have it stay a .zip archive so I can upload it somewhere else.
The problem with re-zipping it is that I don't want it to be a Mac .zip file with bogus resource forks and DS_STORE files in it (for Windows users). Any zip file you create on a Mac usually has these bogus extra files inside it - confusing to Windows users. If I download a Windows .zip, I want to keep it as a .zip that was zipped on Windows, if you follow me.

Thank you! I was looking in the System preferences everywhere - did not think of Safari itself.
BTW, for anyone who cares, I also discovered that in Safari, even when you have the Preferences set to automatically unzip the files, you can override this by control-clicking on the file and choosing "Download Linked File as..."

  • Recover a zip file on mac?

Sorry for the somewhat off topic question.
I have a very important zip file that no longer exists on an FTP site. I let it sit too long before checking to make sure it was legit and it was corrupted. The file size is about 200 meg and I know there is tons of usuable data in there (it was zipped up images from an event we did). I know there are a bunch of windows only programs that could go through the file and try to save some of the images. Does such a program exist for MAC?
Again sorry to bother, but this would save me if I could find something. I dont have access to a windows machine either.
    Thank you so much.

I think it's built in, just double click on it and it should open with Archive Utility. I dunno, maybe Unrar X might work for you>

iWork (no 's') for iOS & iWork for Mac have not gone away.
iWork.com (beta) (also no 's') is going away the end of July. iWork.com (beta) is/was an online method of sharing iWork files with other users & never moved out of beta in 3+ years. It is a completely different entity than the iWork apps & is not & never has been necessary for the iWork apps to function.
A Numbers document, as well as Pages or Keynote documents, cannot be opened on a PC. You must first export them to a file that a PC can use. For Numbers that is generally Excel. In Numbers on your iPad tap the wrench & then tap Share & Print & choose Excel as the file type.
As for transfering a file from a PC to an iPad, I'm not sure as I don't use a PC.

  • How to open a zip file of photos on Mac Book Pro when it cannot find or fix alias

I do a home photo editing business.  One of a my clients sent me a disc that she zipped to compress because there were a lot of pictures on it.  When I try to open it on my Mac Book Pro I keep getting an error message that it cannot find alias and what program do I want to use to open it.  It also gives me an option to "fix alias" but it doesn't seem to work.  What am I doing wrong?  Why can't I open zip files on my Mac Book Pro?  I should probably mention that the client also uses a Mac Book Pro and her pictures were in her iPhoto before she zipped them on a disc.
    Thanks for your help!!!

I did copy it to my desktop, but it still won't let me open it.  I think the file on the disc might be corrupt or something like that though the cd itself checks out fine as far as viruses go.  I was able to verify the disc, but that's about it.  My husband tried it on his iMac and we have the same issue.  It's unzipping the folder, but won't let us open the folder on both the Mac Book Pro or the iMac by double clicking, going to file/open or right clicking.  It just keeps saying the same message as I posted above.  I think I'm just going to have the client put the pictures on either a memory card or a USB memory stick so she won't have to compress the files for zipping purposes.  It's been too frustrating trying to open this folder on this cd she gave me.  She said she created/zipped the cd on her Mac Book Pro but it sure won't open on mine.

  • How do I create and send a zip file? I have Lion and I'm working in Word for mac

To show you how little I know about any of this, I don't even know if this is the correct forum in which to ask this question. I'm a copywriter. I have a client in France. I have 15 word documents, 15 of the same documents in PDFs and a small Excel document to send him. Simple, mutlipage Word docs. Short two-page Excell sheet. I want to create a zip file for them to send to him. Can I do it? How? I have unzipped zip files other people have sent to me, but I've never created or sent one myself. I'm working in Word for Mac 2011. I have Lion. I'm using Mac's email. Please don't assume I know anything. I need very, very simple, play by play instructions. You are all very helpful, so I have high hopes.

You will be able to both zip and unzip. If the recipient of your zipped file does not have zip, he/she will need to get it, or you could send him/her the above address so that he/she can unzip his/her file.
(I wish the English language could settle on the use of something less clumsy that he/she him/her etc.)
BTW, I think that you can zip only folders, not separate files, so put even one file into a folder before zipping).

  • Creating a flat .zip file on a MAC

Can someone please tell me how to create a flat zip file using my MAC. I control-click the files and choose compress and it puts them in a folder. Basically, I want to know how to select many photos and compress all of them into a zip file but then when one clicks on the zip file to open it it DOES NOT open another folder with the pictures in them, but rather just opens the pictures. PowerSchool only accepts flat zips.
    Thanks!

You might try using a different utility. Or download the utility iTweaX - CNet Downloads or MacUpdate. Open and click on the Misc tab of the Tweaks menubar item. At the bottom click on the button labeled "Archives." This will install a new System Preferences item from which you can alter the behavior of the built-in Zip utility.

  • Import e-mail zip file to numbers Mac Pro 10.10.2 procesor

Import e-mail into numbers Mac Pro 10.10.2 Yosemite can not open the zip file with data, names, addresses. Jerry

    Jerry,
Numbers cannot open a zip file.  drag the zip file to the downloads folder or the desktop or where ever you like.
Double click the zip file.  This should "unzip" the file (that is it will uncompress the file).
then, hopefully, there is a Numbers file in the resulting files.  double click the numbers file
