Mac101 (German?); Hands on Finder Intro;

Hello,
my mother in law (60+) plans for a computer her first at all. Is there a Mac101 out in German language? And if possible a printable version too?
Good old dead old OS7 Mac was shipped with a nice intro for the very first steps to use the finder ("what is a window?") which was more a practical lesson how to use your finder. Anything like this for OSX (and maybe in German?)
(Would be great to have the (i)Mac OSX interface as simple as the iPhone and with with a touch screen.)

Look at these links from Apple that relate to Tiger (10.4).May include some info relating to your question.

  • Using New Spotlight in Lion (What does it find/not find?esp iPhoto

I was reading a Lion review and trying the different new things in Lion it was talking about...one of which was the extensive search capability of Spotlight in the upper right hand corner.  But Im not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if it's not working properly.  It says it searches for images...but when I type in a word that for example is either a keyword, description or even title name for a photo in iphoto, it does NOT come up in the search.  For example, I tried on a new pair of eyeglasses named Zagg...Ive got photos that have that in the actual name, others in the description or keyword...I type in Zagg in Spotlight and no photos come up.  If it's searching for images, shouldn't it search for images in iphoto?  Seems weird.  If I type in a photo name from my old PC files (ie 000_124), that comes up in Spotlight...but apparently not Keywords or words in Descriptions?  This would seem like a glitch as I thought the whole reason for putting info on your photos - whether keywords, descriptions, actual names of files was so you could find them.
On the other hand, I find that it found photos that I didn't even have in iphoto or knew were on my system.  I typed in a person's last name and all of the sudden photos they might have sent me years ago via gmail (that were not labeled with their name at all) came up.  At first, I couldnt figure out where they were coming from as I didn't even recognize them but then I used the "SHOW ALL IN FINDER" button, and figured out that these were photos in a gmail and I guess because I imported gmail into imail, they came up...but it was wierd because I searched for the person's last name (which is part of their email address) and these photos (which did not have their name in the file name) came up.  And the photos are not in iphoto.
And yet photos that did have the name I was searching for in the file - either the name itself or a keyword - did not come up in Spotlight.
So when Spotlight says it searches for images, are those not iphoto Images?  It is not making sense to me as there seems to be some incompatibility between the Spotlight search and just a plain iphoto search.   Why wouldnt it all be integrated?

ok, I guess I was confused because it said it searched for images, and to me, images are photos.
If found iphoto photos based on number titles like 100_005 and such but not based on actual words that were used either as the file's name "John in Toronto" or descriptions, keywords etc

  • DVD shows no files but Finder info says DVD is full to the brim

    Hello,
I have a DVD which a friend of mine burned for me; he used a HD-Recorder to record a tv show for me which I missed, but I do not know which model he owns.
When I insert it into my MacBooPro3,1 model with 10.6.1, which does run in 32-bit-mode (I checked!), it is mounted alright. But there are no files or folders to be shown, not in the finder and not in terminal. On the other hand, the Finder info tells me that 2 GB are used.
The solution posted here (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10533178#10533178) seems not to work. Could it have to do that it is a DVD-RW?
Any hint would be greatly appreciated!
    Regards
    Jim

Most likely the video content is in a format that works only one the device originally used to record/view.

  • Finding Destination

I am trying to send my compressed sequence to the external hard drive where it came from. I first tried Current Source Location but it did not go back.
I then tried a custom destination and I specifically chose the external drive and the file I created using System Settings in FCP.
In both cases I eventually found the material in the internal hard drive but not with the name I gave it that appears in History.
How do I choose a specific destination?

How do I choose a specific destination?
    Compressor main menu>Target>Destinationt>Other>your HD.
After compression go to the history window>Toggle the little arrow pointing rightwards and on the right hand side find the magnifier icon> click on it to "reveal in finder".
If your compressed file is not on your external drive then you might have write permission issues

  • Debra's Intro

If Floyd found this embarrassing then guess how I as a Brit feels! Especially as 2 out of the 3 already know me!
I have worked in IT for too long, originally as a programmer (which in itself dates me, they are now developers). My latest employer Fujitsu took me on when they had a campaign looking for 'Rusty Mums' during a skills shortage. At that time my biggest passion in life, my daughter Brooke was only 6 months Old, during Open World she will be 20!
I am a Principal Consultant in our Oracle Practice and lead the BI & Strategy capability, and have worked with Oracle EBS since 9.4.1, not only is Fujitsu a CAP Partner but we eat our own dog food and have Siebel, EBS and Hyperion plus lots of that lovely Oracle technology I know nothing about!
I am an Applications OCP and Oracle Master (IT Professional) and obviously an Oracle ACE Director. I have even had the ACE program registered as a [lovemark!|http://debrasoracle.blogspot.com/2008/08/recognition.html] !
I am deputy chair (VP) of UKOUG The Best User Group in the World, and also run the Product Development Committee of which I am very proud at both the EMEA and International Usersgroups Communities.
UKOUG has its own staff we do not use a management company so being a director is in itself a skill and in pursuit of good governance i also studied for and achieved Chartered Director Status with the IOD.
Like Floyd I speak at many Oracle events and the main topic is Fusion Applications and Strategy, ocaisionally talking about the day job and BI. Personal life has not been the best in the last 18 months but what got me through it? My friends on the circuit and their Hugs (thanks Floyd).

If you'd prefer the Leopard intro movie files as they exist on your HDD, rather than a YouTube video (.flv), copy the following text (don't include the space at the end!):
    /System/Library/CoreServices/Setup Assistant.app/Contents/Resources/TransitionSection.bundle/Contents/Resources/
...then select Finder > Go menu > Go to Folder box, and paste. In the folder that opens you'll find intro.mov, which is the video, and intro-sound.mp3, which is the audio. The audio is separate from the movie because it's longer (55 seconds vs. 34 seconds). You can recombine them in iMovie, if you're so inclined.

  • Elke's Intro

I am quite honored to share in the ranks of such intelligent Oracle Applications Technologists. And, I like, Debra and Floyd before me find this intro a bit embarrassing. So, anyway, here’s the part about me…..
I have worked with Oracle Technology since I started my IT career in 1993 after graduating from the University of Oklahoma (Go Sooners :-). My first job was as an Oracle Database Administrator/UNIX System Administrator and it has been a great career fit for me. In 1999, I moved to Louisville, KY and started work for Humana (Health Ins Provider), which was when my Oracle Applications career began. In 2004, my knowledge sharing and networking began with the OAUG Connection Point conference in Orlando – since then, I have started a Special Interest Group (Oracle EBIZ Applications Technology SIG). I n addition to the SIG sessions at conferences, I also present (primarily advanced Oracle EBS Infrastructure and HA infrastructure) and am fortunate enough to be asked to participate in panels (Linux Migraiton, Women in Technology, and Cloning). In 2006, I co-authored a book titled Oracle Applications DBA Field Guide (Apress). When I’m not having fun with you at conferences, I’m managing a staff of 8 DBAs for Humana supporting their Oracle Applications environment.
I enjoy teaching others and sharing knowledge about Oracle Applications and Technology. I look forward to interacting more with this group of great, talented people in the future.
    Best Regards,
    Elke

  • Stop Finder from "calculating folder size" or just move along little doggie

My iMac OSX 10.6.7 has recently adopted some new behavior.
Frequently, but not always, when I go to either save a document or attach a document to an email, or otherwise access the Finder from somewhere other than in Finder itself, I get a folder icon and an indication that Finder is "Calculating folder size" before it will display into the next column to allow for saving or accessing.
I saw in the magazine Macworld that I should try unchecking the "Calculate All Sizes" options in FInder>View>Show View Options window, but that checkbox and option do not appear.  When I go to FInder>View>Show View Options, all I have are:  Always Open in Column View (checkbox), Text Size (dropdown), Show Icons (checkbox), Show Icon Preview (checkbox), Show Preview Column (checkbox) and Arrange By (dropdown).
The problem is particularly pernicious with Word/Office 2011.  When I go to "Save As" I get a spinning beachball for a good 15 to 20 seconds before Finder even appears, and then when it does, I get another 5 to 15 seconds of "calculating folder size."  I have read that Word 2011 has this problem, but I'm not sure if my circumstance is normal or worse.
So, why is this doing this now when it has never done it before, and if unchecking "calculate all sizes" is a possible fix, where is that option?
I did empty all caches, repaired all permissions, and did the other things that a good little mac owner is supposed to do to keep the machine squeaky clean.

This is about as minimal as Finder lets it get -
As far as I can tell that arrangement is displayed only when viewing the Desktop.
Finder uses a slightly longer one for a window whose view is set to Icon -
...and the one I posted previously for windows whose view is set to List.
In Finder, there is actually only one View Options display and it is live; what is shown in it will change as you change the view mode for a window, and also will change to reflect the choices/settings if you click on a different window.
Perhaps Path Finder has altered how that behaves. However, try some experimenting. Open the View Options display, and then try navigating into a nest of folders. Try highlighting different things in the Path Finder displays - the name of a folder in a list, the name of a column display, etc. At some point you may be able to access the long form for the particular folder's window.
On the other hand, Path Finder seems to act by changing how Finder's info is displayed. In doing so, it may also be interfereing with Finder's ability to present applicable choices in the View Options screen (perhaps because Finder is not coded to understand Path Finder). If you determine that is indeed the case, suggest you send a 'bug' report back to the publisher, explaining the problem and asking them to fix it in a future release of Path Finder.

  • Am I able to find my lost iPhone with William McRae's GPS installed?

  • Notes on U430 repair: top half lower section (keyboard + touchpad), LCD hinges

Hello, I wanted to share some of notes on the repairs I did on my U430. First I want to thank Lenovo Benelux for their awesome support. They were very friendly and sent me a new part immediately, after I indicated that I could fix the issue myself, at home. This is really outstanding service.  This was the first time taking my laptop apart to this extent, and I just wanted to share some notes. When taking it apart I found that in fact it had some more serious problems, namely the plastic near the LCD hinges on the lower section was broken, something I already suspected, but had walked around with for more than a month (daily use). This is a common problem with the U430 and related laptops (U310, U410, U530), see this official reply from Lenovo staff: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-U-and-S-Series-Notebooks/U430-Touch-Screen-Hinge/m-p/2031546#M40623 Disassembly begins by removing the 12 screws of the bottom panel. Then begin taking everything out. This should be a relatively painless process, but you have to be really careful. Start with the battery. The connector is very flimsy so I removed the screws holding the battery in place first. This means that there is still power on the mainboard so be really careful not to drop any screws. The battery is taped to the shell, pull it off slowly. When free, the connector should release from the motherboard without the use of any tools. Undo all the other connectors. The flatcable conns come off by wedging the black section upwards. Use fingernails of left and right hand simultaneously for the wider ones. The LCD and SATA conns require quite a bit of force. Some of the flatcables need to be peeled from the shell (slowly, low angle) Remove all the screws. There is one hidden motherboard screw under a "warranty void" label. The motherboard should come out without the use of any force. You do not need to remove the 4 heatsink screws, but there is one extra screw holding the fan in place.  The other two boards are also simple, but the power/reset button board only barely makes it out of its nook. Now for the interesting part. Before taking out the 4 hinge screws, open the laptop to about 90 degrees. Then, simply swap with the replacement and replace the screws. While the LCD assembly was separate, I found that one of the hinges felt quite loose. Therefore I popped the plastic panel on the lower rim of the LCD assy and tightened the screws.  Putting back together is simple, just reverse steps of previous. Carefully fold the keyboard flatcable (don't try to put a crease in, just let the battery push down on it). Screw in battery before plugging in the battery connector. Plugging in the battery should be the final step before closing the cover. Use an ESD wristband to earth ground. Good luck!

Yes - it would be too bad, to throw it into trash because such a small damage.
My posting above now can be read with more details in the knowledgebase.
German users will find the HowTo in the german ThinkPad-Wiki
The last days i did the same with a ThinkPad 390E - with success
Broken holder of both hinges, the right one was in a better condition because the upper side of the holder still existed partially:
The repair pieces for the left corner
    and the right corner
    Last test, whether it fits
    after sticking together
after attaching the system board there absolutely is no space between repair piece and the board next the DC-in-connector- all inserted parts on the bottom of the basecover must be insulated with tape. The system board touches the left part (under the DC-in-connector)
    after attaching the laptop
    Just to explain:
All these repairs can be done without knowledge in metallworking
A great challenge will be to repair this 390 basecover:
The inner side of the basecover at the top of this posting had the same damage but only the wall still existed.

  • Messages on MBPr shows "iMessage inactive" - help?

I've read through the threads, removed plist, etc etc.
Messages is happy with Bonjour and Google. I can log into iCloud and my appleID account just fine.
This MBPr (Mavericks 10.9.2) had a nuke-and-reinstall 10 days ago. The first time I tried to use Messages since that auspicious event was Monday.
But nothing will get Message to work on my MBPr. (Happy as a clam on my phone and iPad.)
This is the Preferences > Accounts window:
Eventually, I let the spinning wheel spin long enough that I was greeted with an error message:
    I'm connected. FiOS.
A few clicks of the "OK" button and I had a pswd field that would let me type.
This felt like I was moving up in the world - but being able to type in the pswd didn't fix anything.
So I tried changing from @mac.com to @me.com. That yielded a new error message:
It took several clicks of the "ok" button for the popup to go away, so I could try the gmail address associated with my account. No joy.
So I went back to my mac.com address (the primary one on the account) and I went back to error message #1.
OK, Ralph, work your magic. ;-)

    Hey!
Open Messages > Preferences > General Section and set it to "When I Quit, Set My Status to Off line"That was my status
Open FaceTime > Preferences and set it to Off.FT won't log in either. Spinning beach ball of death then the same "could not sign in check network connection" mess.
In the right hand pane find the IDS: yourAppleID-Auth Token item and delete it.MBP hasn't been preserving this pswd - I have to login to every Apple Thing every time.
There should be one called com.apple.facetime: registrationV1 Delete this as well.Couldn't log in (see above) but deleted.
In the Preferences folder find the following.I assume you want me to delete all of those items!
    Going to reboot now.
    Back.
Yes, I had to input Apple ID as well as pswd on Messages app.
OH! It says I'm signed in (Preferences > general)
And I can start a message to a friend in contacts!
    Success! Thank you!
PS - fixed FaceTime app as well.

  • Can't copy some files from FileVault Sparsebundle in Time Machine backup

I've got filevault turned on for my mac Mac Mini (10.6.2). I'm using Time Machine to back up to a firewire drive. There's plenty of space - my Mini hd has 250 Gb of 500 used, and I'm backing up to a 750Gb partition on the external drive. The initial backup went OK, and when I logged out it backed up my filevault-protected home directory. When I logged back in, I was able to browse the Backups.backupdb on the external drive, go to the users directory, and open the sparsebundle that was my filevault-protected home directory (after entering the password). I can browse through this backup of my home directory. However, when I try copying files from the backup of the home directory, I get an error:
The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "(filename)" can't be read or written. (Error code -36).
I get this error for some files, but not all of them. I've tried running BatChmod to reset permissions on all files in my home directory, and then erasing the backup drive and having Time Machine recreate the backup. However I'm still having this problem.
I have also tried restoring the entire hard drive (to a 3rd external HD) by booting from the 10.6 DVD and going through the full-restore process. All of my files are fine when I restore using this method.
Is there something I should do so that I can restore individual files from the backup of my filevault sparsebundle? It is extremly inconvenient to have to do a full hard drive restore if all I want is a file or two, and of course if the motherboard on my mini dies and I can't get a close enough replacement computer, then I could really be up a creek.
    Thanks,

Don't try to restore files individually by hand using finder. TM backups are protected by very restrictive ACLs and are not designed to be accessed that way.
you can restore the whole sparse bundle with the home directory from TM interface. you should be logged in as a different user when you do this. the easiest is to be logged in as root so as not to deal with any permissions issues.
another thing you might try is doing it from command line instead of finder. this is also not the designed way but might work where finder copy doesn't.
to do this run the following terminal command after you mount the sparse bundle with backups of the home directory
    ditto --noacl path/to/source/file /path/to/target/directory
here path/to/source file is the path to the file in the sparse bundle you want to restore and path/to target directory is the path to the folder where you want to copy it to. an easy way to get the path to an item is to drag that item to the terminal window. make sure that you have all the spaces correctly in the command.
It is extremly inconvenient to have to do a full hard drive restore if all I want is a file or two, and of course if the motherboard on my mini dies and I can't get a close enough replacement computer, then I could really be up a creek.

  • Isync duplicated all contacts

ok, so my contacts on .mac reset - well, there was a prompt saying so when I accessed my Addressbook from .mac. I choose Sync rather than reset, because, that is what iSync does, right?
But now, on .mac, all of my contacts have been duplicated - meaning there are not two entries for every person and company.
When I go home, and turn on my computer, it will automatically sync with my .mac and I will then have duplicates on my computer also.
    What should I do?
This is annoying. I continuously have problems with updating contacts also. I will make a change on my computer, or on .mac Address Book and I will go back to that contact a couple days later and the change will not be there. That usually happens when I try to delete an old phone number from a contact. It alsways comes back.
My understanding is that when there is a sync, that it takes the most recently edited data as the correct data. So, if I delete a Home Phone number on my .mac, iSync will override the Home Phone number on my Computer's Addressbook and delete it there also.
Am I wrong in my thinking?
    Please help and thank you!

Here is the dilemna you face: iSync seeks to balance or equalize the data content of applications, devices and servers during each synchronization event, incorporating any additions, changes or deletions you have made anywhere in the data stored everywhere.
If you do attempt to synchronize with .Mac in an effort to restore the records you removed, what will actually happen is that the matching records on .Mac will be deleted—in response to your manual deletions in the Address Book—and they will no longer be stored anywhere.
Normally, you would perform a reset to correct this, but according to what you have posted, you do not have an intact set of records to reset from. That's a serious problem. You will need to manually add back the missing records to the Address Book, then synchronize with .Mac to perform the update. If you restore all of the records by hand and find that the Address Book therefore contains a complete set of records, then you would be well advised to perform a reset, but use your computer as the source of the records, and overwrite the records on the .Mac servers.
Some advice: back up your Address Book and iCal records periodically, particularly before making major changes to your data—using the built-in back up commands under the File menu in each application—so that you do not find yourself stuck in this position again.

  • Adobe Reader XI freezes my computer when I try to print

I cannot print any pdf files.  I am running Windows 7 and when I open Adobe Reader XI and try to print a pdf, I get the print dialog box just fine but then when I click "Print," the dialog box comes up to show print progress and at that point everything freezes.  I am printing to a wireless printer HP Deskjet 6980.  I can't even get Ctl-Alt-delete to get me to Task Manager so I have to hold down the power button and I don't like having to shut down that way.

I have been having the same problem for weeks.  I am using Windows 7, Mozilla 33.0.3, and Adobe Reader version XI.0.09.  I saw some advice on another site that I relied on in resolving this.  You need to open the Reader, to to Edit, click on Preferences.  On the Left Hand menu, find "Security (Enhanced)" and open it. If "Enable Protected Mode at Start-up" is active, disable that.  "Enhanced Security" is likely already enabled (and you want to leave that on); if not, enable it.
Under "Privileged Locations," make sure both options (Trust documents/Trust sites) are enabled.  Then open the box entitled "View Windows Trusted Sites."  This will take you to the browser's Security Tab.  Click the green arrow "Trusted Sites" and then the "Sites" tab that appears.  Add the relevant https://.***.com site from which you wish to be able to print *.pdfs.  (Note: It is very important the you make sure to include the secure site, i.e., https..., and not the initial www.***.com site from which you may access the secure site).  After you have added the secure address, click Add, then Close the window.  Make sure then to Click "OK" to close the Security Tab, and then scroll down to the bottom of the "Security (Enhanced)" page to which you will be returned and click OK there.  Close the Adobe Reader and any other Reader windows you may have open.
You can now go to the secure site whose address you just entered, and download the .pdf you want.  (If you have already downloaded the .pdf on your computer from that site you can now just open it instead).  Send the print command for the pages of the .pdf page you want.  The system will hang for a few seconds (at least mine did), but then it prints.
You may be able to go directly to the Security Tab in your browser and enter the secure site in question without going through a pdf document and it will also work but I do not know that for sure.
Finally, I am not an expert; just another user who figured this out with a little help from others.  An expert may wish to comment further on what I have written above to provide further guidance or instruction.
    Good luck.
Later Note:  It is possible to add a non-secure site from which you want to download and open .pdfs to the Trusted Site list.  To do this, uncheck the "Require server verification (https://) for all sites in this zone" box that appears under the listed of Trusted Sites.  As I am not an expert user I do not know if doing this represents a significant security issue but I at least do not find that is the case after running a cursory search online.
