MacBook 1.1 not booting up fully

OK, here's my problem (narrative form - that's the way my mind works).
My MacBook is the original white version 1.1, 2GHz Intel Core Duo Processor with 1GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (upgraded from the original 0.5 GB), bought on the day after its announcement by the late Mr Jobs in 2006 (my own use is a MacBook Pro late 2012 model with Mountain Lion - guess when I upgraded, and which one I'm using now?). It came with OSX 10.4 Tiger, which was gradually upgraded through the subset numbers, but stopped at the final upgrade by Apple to 10.4.11.
I have set up accounts for different users: an administrator account, one each for three children to have a personalised desktop etc., and an "Anyone" account for all other uses, my wife and me included. Up to a couple of weeks ago this setup was working fine and those using it were happy with it. We do have a Gates-crasher (sorry, Windows PC) laptop that is newer even than my "new" Mac, but nobody likes to use it if the MacBook is available. Am I surprised? No.
Unfortunately, now it won't boot up fully -- at least, it tries, but it takes so long to get there that I can't work out if it will ever complete the job. I have tried to get a Genius Bar appointment at my local (LiverpoolONE, UK) Mac Store, but there are none available for at least a week, and I am under pressure from the family to get it up and running again.
What happens now is that it gets to the "which account do you want to log into?" screen, but when you choose one of those it takes for ever to get the account fully loaded. Finder appears, but not the full range of icons at the top right hand side of the screen, nor the Dock. Then if you do try to do anything with what you get, it takes for ever for anything else to appear. For example, while I have been writing this and checking other parts of the support website it took probably 5 minutes or more for the "About this Mac" information to appear so that I could confirm the OSX version number, and in 10 minutes since I clicked on the "More Info ..." button, it has done nothing more than display the cycling micro-wheel beside the message, "Opening System Profiler.app". This is a machine that was working at full speed for its type not so long ago.
My suspicion is that something in the OS has got corrupted, so I wanted to see if a reinstall of that would help things out. Problem: can't find the original install-backup disk. It has been so reliable that I have only reinstalled once, after a mechanical hard-drive failure that meant a new HDD, over 5 years ago (I used to reinstall Windows several times a year before converting to Mac). We moved house since then ...
So I have ordered a replacement install disk - or rather, an upgrade to Snow Leopard, which I understand is the highest level of OS that will install on a MacBook 1.1.
My questions are:
(a) will this work on this machine - is my info that it will take Snow Leopard correct?
(b) if I run the install and find that it will go in (or any install, e.g. of Tiger 10.4.11 again), will the children lose their data, specifically the several years of digital photographs that are stored on the machine? Is there any way of avoiding this, given the snail's pace at which the machine is working just now?
(Please note: Yes, I do know about backing up, and am kicking myself now for having discontinued regular EHDD backups that I used to run on that machine when it was my working machine. No lectures, please, I have read them all to myself.)
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Your post says, "2. Power down your computer without shutting down through software." Does that mean hold down the on/off button for 5 secs so that it turns off without any of the software closing down?
If you have software running, you usually have an opportunity to back it up or recover data before shutting down.
command-option-escape and force quit everything that you can't otherwise quit manually.
If you are unable to boot it at all beyond the start screen, and can't see any files yet for over 10 minutes, yes, I mean hold down the power button until the power goes off.
Safari 4.1.3, and iTunes 9.2.1 are the only software Apple updates for 10.4.11 during 2010.  Everything else was updated prior to 2010.

  • HT203254 MacBook pro will not boot up?

My 2007 MacBook pro will not boot up. Sometimes just stops booting before password screen, but other times after that. If I get to put in my password it goes on, but I either get a blank screen or partial jumbled screen. When using boot disc and run hardware test it gives a video controller error 4VDC/1/40000003. Would that make it hang up and not fully boot? I can understand it giving blank and jumbled screens.

Means you need a new logic board. Make an appointment at an Apple store to confirm.

  • My Mid 2010 MacBook Pro will not boot

My Mid 2010 MacBook Pro will not boot regularly, in safe mode, in recovery mode or from original OS DVD. Is this the logic board?
I've tried resetting the SMC and pram numerous times and even tried switching out hdd's to try and do a clean install on a new hdd.
If I attempt to boot regularly or from recovery drive the grey apple logo appears for a period before the screen goes black and the power LED operates as though in 'sleep' mode. I'm unable to wake it from this state and the same applies to booting in safe mode.
When attempting to boot from the OS DVD that was originally packed with the computer it just freezes on the language select option, this occurs with the other hdd's I have attempted to use.
Any other suggestions to get it working? I fear the logic board has gone and that the repair won't be worth the money.
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi JRC8.8,
It sounds like you have been on the right track in trying to troubleshoot this issue. You may want to see if your MacBook Pro will boot directly to the Apple Hardware Test, as outlined in the following article:

  • Macbook Pro will not boot beyond grey screen.  System freezes.

My Macbook Pro will not boot-up or get beyond the grey screen (with spinning gear wheel.)  I've tried all the recommended actions: resetting PRAM, disk repair, permissions repair, re-boot in safe mode etc but still the problem persists.  When viewing the safe-boot in verbose mode, the system seems to hang at the stage when it's checking the Airport & Ethernet - the last line on the page reads: "AppleBCOM5701Ethernet:   0    0    setFixedSpeed - logic error, speed any?"
Any ideas how to fix this without doing an Archive & Install?
I'm assuming that if I do an "Archive & Install" then I will lose all my Applications (VLC, Handbrake, MS Office for Mac etc.)  Will this actually be the case?  Will I lose them.
Any help gratefully received.  Many thanks.

Archive and Install just affects the System files, so any apps you have  should still be available afterwards.  The Installer on the disk that  came  with your Mac, when you bought it, will tell you this before you  proceed.  Of course, you can always back out of the Installer if you feel chicken.
Notwithstanding it is still necessary to backup everything.  You need to check that Time Machine is set to also backup your Applications folder.  It might be set not to do this.
It may not be necessary to worry about this if you have the original installer disc(s).  I think any stuff downloaded from iTunes etc can be re-downloaded.  However, it's probably quicker to get Time Machine to backup your apps if you can afford the HDD space.  It's bound to be quicker than re-downloading the stuff plus any updates.  And of course there's those Apps that you have but forgotten about.  What about them?

  • MacBook Pro will not boot

MacBook Pro will not boot. Just get grey screen. When I hold down control + R, I get blank blue screen.

Which model MacBook Pro do you have?
It's COMMAND and R that will take you to your Recovery partion, not Control and R.
If a later model, can you boot into Internet Recovery (booting whilst holding down the command, option and R keys)?

  • How do I uninstall Yosemite please ? Since I upgraded my 2011 MacBook Pro will not boot up

My 2011 MacBook Pro will not boot up following my upgrade to Yosemite. How do I uninstall or downgrade back to the previous version of OS please ?

You can't downgrade or uninstall unless you first erase the drive. Try the following:
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

What model MBP and which version of OS X? Sounds as if the hard drive may have failed. If you have an installation disc, try booting with it. If your machine came with Lion or Mountain Lion, try booting to the Recovery partition - Command and R keys held down while booting.

  • MacBook Pro will not boot up, stops at Apple logo

My daughter's 3 year old MacBook Pro will not boot up. The grey screen with Apple logo comes up and it looks and sounds like it is going to boot up but after 30 seconds it goes black and turns off.  Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

The internal HDD will have to be replaced.  Since you cannot get the MBP to acces the internal HDD, you will have either use Target Disk Mode:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Or take out the HDD and place it in an enclosure and then connect it to the MBP via USB.  (After you have installed the new HDD and the OSX)
You may or may not be able to get information off of the HDD.
    Ciao.

  • MacBook Pro will not boot up. Hardware test found no problems.

MacBook Pro will not boot up.  Hardware test found no problems.

Sorry. What I mean is I selected the SL boot up in the start up panel and it would not boot into the cd. The CD rom sounds like it just keeps reading with it slowly loading from grey screen to blue screen to the Block screen. Almost like it is booting into normal mode from the hard drive.
What I can't understand is why it runs fine is Safe mode?
Also why do I get a " this disk cannot be used to start up your computer" message on my hard drive when trying to install Lion in safe mode? Well why not it's the only hard drive in the computer?
The first screen shot is the Tech tool showing everything passed the hardware test is safe mode.
