Macbook 1.1 spits out discs without reading them since upgrading to Leopard

Ever since I upgraded my mac to Leopard OS X 10.6.6 (legit) I've not been able to use my scanner, I can print ok but can't scan, But most importantly I can't read any discs.
When I put them in the disc drive it tries and then just spits them out after having a think about it.
I've tried multiple discs all with the same results, discs that i've tried on other macs and work fine.
Because of the age of the Mac its out of warranty.
Can anyone help? or point me in the right direction?
Cheers

Im having the same problem. However, I fixed the CD problem by using a disk cleaning disk. Now it will read write CDs but still ejects DVDs

  • My MacBook Pro is spitting out my DVDs. I tried many discs and they all got spat out. Its an early 2008. The drive is a HL-DT-ST dvdrw GSA-s10n. Do I need a new drive?

Hi.  Need some help here.  My MacBook Pro is spitting out my DVDs.  I insert them and they knock around awhile making whirring noises, then out they come.  Refuses to play them.  I've tried many.  I have an early 2008 model and the drive is a HL-DT-ST dvdrw GSA-s10n.  Do I need to get a new drive?  Thanks for any help or comments.

My old Early 2008 MBP used to do that every now and then in the last years of its life. Got a dry-type optical drive cleaner, the kind that is a CD with 4 rows of very fine and soft bristles glued on the "business side". Memorex was the brand I got, good for 20-30 uses.  Ran it thru every time the drive acted up, never failed to restore functionality.
Of course, the Mac would later go on and blow its logic board. And that was that.

  • How do I fix iMac that automatically ejects disks without reading them

How do I fix an iMac that automatically ejects disks without reading them?
Have tried resetting the SMC, didn't work.
If I have to get a new drive, how much do they cost on an iMac and where do I get it fixed?
Very disappointed if we have to spend money to fix computer as we have not had this computer for a very long time and we bought a Mac because it was supposed to be better.

Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

In fact, do 3 in a row, takes a bit of time.
Also might try one of those cleaning CDs.
Replacing it isn't very easy, but...
So we know more about it...
At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac, then click on More Info, then click on Hardware> and report this upto but not including the Serial#...

  • MB Pro, with Tiger, which has since upgraded to Leopard - Install Discs?

My MacBook Pro had originally been installed with Tiger. I have since upgraded to Leopard.
Should I need to boot from my install discs, which install disc do I use? Will my Tiger install discs work with Leopard, or should I use my Leopard disc (retail version)?
    Thank you!

    {quote:title=Kappy wrote:}
Actually you would be better to install Leopard directly. You can reinstall pre-bundled software separately without installing Tiger. An Erase and Install of Leopard would be preferable to installing Tiger then upgrading to Leopard. Less chance of a problem.
    Hi Kappy,
Some, at least, of the late 2007 MBP C2D 2.2 and 2.4 GHz MBPs (mine included) actually came with Tiger Installed, but with a "drop in" copy of Leopard enclosed in the box. From memory the version of Leopard included will only install if the original software is in place. (I'm not 100% certain of this, but I'll check) Not sure what Trisha's situation is, of course, but worth bearing in mind as a possible issue.

  • Macbook spitting out discs

Whenever I insert a disc into the macbook's drive, it will accept it for a little, then proceed to spit it back out. I tried blank discs, dvds, even the installation disc that came with the macbook and it spit all of them out. I took my macbook into apple and they said nothing was wrong. They proved it by putting discs in, which the macbook accepted and did not spit out. I took the macbook back to my dorm room and have the same problem. I even tried different discs this time, but they just get spit back out.
    Any help would be wonderful.

Well I'm sorry that I can't answer your question, but I have a feeling that this is a NICE prelude to what I have to look forward to.
    Great.
I'm having this EXACT same issue (see here:

Somehow, I know it's going to turn into a fight to get my machine fixed. I just know it >:(
But as the other poster said, take it back!!!!!!!!!

  • My Macbook Pro is spitting out disks!

When ever i put a disk into my CD drive it just spits it out and makes this weird clicking noise if it accepts it. But then it wont do anything. Ive tried both CD's and DVD's and nothing... It jsut doesnt work. my macbook isnt even a full month old. anyone else had these issues. Apple store was no help!

Is it any disc you put in that it spits out or just this particular one?
If it is just that particular disc then it would suggest that there may be something wrong with it.
Cleaning would only help if you were experiencing similar problems with other discs.
If it is spitting out every disc you insert then you could try resetting the system management controller on your MacBook Pro. The reason I suggest this I had a similar problem on a MacBook G4 and as I had tried resetting everything else with no luck I decided to give restting the PMU a go and that cured it. So no gurantees but worth a shot.

  • Select messages without reading them

On iPad , is there a way select messages without having to open and read them?  I have Mail synced on my laptop and iPad and I have read the messages on the laptop but dont want to re-read them all, and want to selectively choose some as 'read' but not delete.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

MobileMe syncs between all my devices.  And depending on the type of POP account you've been using, it may be possible to set it up as Exchange.  For example after all this time, I just learned I could set up my Hotmail account as Exchange.  I had originally set it up as POP, which was uber annoying, but once I found out how to set it up as Exchange, it now also syncs between all devices.

  • IMac 9.1 has stopped playing DVDs, ejects them after about ten seconds without reading them

This morning my iMac has stopped playing DVDs altogether. It had been struggling to play them before, but now it won't even read them.
I'm running a 9.1, so the warranty is well past due. Not sure if there's anything I can do at this point to fix it, tried to manually eject the SuperDrive in Applications (as per a troubleshooting method) but that doesn't work either. Anyone know a way to fix this?

I would start first with some basic resets, do a SMC AND PRAM reset first, do each 2-3 times and then test. If you don't know how please click  Intel iMac SMC and PRAM resets. If those don't work then I suspect your SuperDrive is either dirty or worn out. You can go to your local office supply store and get a CD/DVD cleaning kit. If that fails then take the machine in for service.

  • Dvd driver rejects disk without reading them

dvd/cd driver reject disks witout reading them.
the system or the macbook has been re-installed.

    Hello
I had the same problem with my PowerBook.
It needed a replacement optical drive installing. The problem often relates to the eject mechanism.
You could try cleaning the drive.

  • How can apple put out things without checking them!

I can't believe all the issues that have happened with iTunes 7... I'm in the same boat as many - my iPod wont respond at all when connected to the comp, after working fine.
But I dont understand how they can release programs without checking them....
Even with the iPod itself.... so many times my ipod wont switch on after a day (this is before iTunes 7), making me have to press MENU. Also, it suddenly freezes.
The software doesnt seem solid at all. I dont know how a company like this with such a successful product can have second-rate software on it and being released!
Thats my vent for the day!

  • Why is my drive spitting out discs

I have a macbook Pro late 2011, when i insert a disc it will accept it, make a bit of a noise, and spit it out about 20 seconds later. Im 100% sure there is no disc still in there, is my drive dead? or can the issue be resolved?
    Thankyou

The drive may dead, but it may just have a dirty reader lense. Does it do it with all discs or just this one?
You can get a CD/DVD cleaning disc almost anywhere that sells electronics, Walmart, Best Buy, Costco, online, etc... They are cheap and if it all discs try this.
If it still persists, being to a Apple store Genius (make an appointment first) and they will diagnose it for free.
The bright side is if it is dead, it not an expensive fix.

  • Drive spits out disc

I've had a Macbook Pro for a couple of years now, but after not using the disc drive for several months it is now giving me a problem.  When I insert the disc it spins for a few seconds and then spits it back out.  I've tried for a few days but cannot get anything (games, DVDs, etc) to run anymore.  What's the best way to diagnose this? I don't want to have to bring it into Apple, really the cheapest solution is the best one.  Thanks

The drive has either failed or is dirty. You could try a CD/DVD head cleaning disc but I'll bet the drive has failed.
You don't have to replace it. All you need is any brand external DVD drive that connects by USB port and it will work with your Mac. It does not have to have the Apple name on it for it to work. Most sell for around $30.

  • Super drive keeps spitting out discs

Hi, my mum is trying to burn photos from i-photo library to a disc. The i-book keeps spitting it out. She tried another disc and it spit that out too. She even tried playing a disc thats worked on it before and it spat that out too. It isn't showing the disc on the desktop. It did accept the original blank disc once after several tries and started the burn but then spat it out with a message that said something about burn failing because it couldnt calibrate the laser or something.
Any ideas would be welcome. The machine is less than 3 years old, and doesn't get heavy use. Its rarely on the internet so probably hasnt had any updates since I did them when I visited last January.

    Hi there:
Given the computer's lack of use (online, or in general?) a certain amount of
preventative maintenance could be done at about any time, and alleviate a
chance something is acting up in the system; and it isn't a hardware issue.
Things such as starting up in SafeBoot (shift key held) then log in to the Mac,
then run Disk Utility and have it 'repair disk permissions' and restart. This is
not a fix for a specific problem; but is part of a general background action a
Mac running OS X could find some help from having this done. I have and use
OnyX from Titanium Software (download, runs free - is a donationware) to
keep on top of various background maintenance routines otherwise not done.
There is a curious and almost desperate (yet it works for some users) answer
to the situation where discs eject and don't work; and I found this idea from a
search, after a bit of reading: "A fix for my superdrive problems" - & comments:
    http://bura-bura.com/blog/archives/2005/07/11/a-fix-for-my-superdrive-problems/
A computer kept in top condition and updated, sometimes finds new issues in
some update or upgrade, but if the issue can be isolated and troubleshooted,
one can learn if this is hardware based or software based. And, if the computer
has the optional AppleCare Plan (adds two more years) repairs may be covered.
The superdrive may be defective; even if not used much. Or, it may be a simple
issue in the software. See the link above, for a novel and voodoo-like cure!
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Spits out disc after restart...

While installing, it says 'Installation will continue after restart' or something or other, and then it restarts but then my mac ejects the disc by itself while on the grey screen, so obviously it can't continue.
I've tried starting it again but it just starts from the start again. And I've checked if it had finished but it still says I am on 10.5.7 on the 'about this mac' bit. Any Help would be greatly appreciated.
BTW, i've tested it with other discs and it spits those out too when i do a normal restart.

    It is!?
Tryresatring it with another CD in it, video game, music whatever..... Does it spit it out?
If so you may have a problem with your drive....
If it doesn't you may want to back up your current OS then do a clean install of leopard/SL

  • Is it possible to generate pulses on a ctr out and simultaneously read them on another ctr input using one NI PCI-6601?

    Hi,
I am trying to output a pulse train on ctr0 OUT and I want to receive them on CTR1 SOURCE of the same NI PCI-6601 card, but no use! :-(
The pulses are generated OK, but the acquisition fails within timeout (10 sec.). The generated signal has 1 Hz frequency and 20usec high time. I've studyed the NI examples for this.
    Can anyone help me, please?

    Hi Julien,
I can post the code, but actually, it worked! I was making a loop between CTR0 OUT and CTR1 SOURCE and it didn't work. I made a loop CTR0 OUT <-> CTR1 GATE and it worked like a charm! As far as I read in the NI PCI-660x manual, I cand loop to either SOURCE or GATE pins and the pulses' acquisition should work anyway.... Maybe I am wrong. Can you explain me why it didn't work on the SOURCE pin?
Thank you very much for your tine!
    Regards,
    Marles
