Macbook 1.1 won't install Snow leopard

I'm trying to bring my 2007-2008ish Macbook up to date but am having trouble installing. My computer is running leopard and has started getting rather slow and choppy. Meets up to the specs of Snow Leopard but every time I try to install it it gets about 1/10th of the way there and either sits for hours saying theres about 56 minutes left or has an error and makes me quit. I'm using a Lenevo external disk drive becuase the one in the side of my computer is broken somehow and you cannot get disks in without forcing them.
Once it got to the end of the bar and restarted but wouldn't boot up showing only a blank white screen. After leaving it for a good ten minutes I was forced to restart it again. This time it got to the apple and froze, after leaving it for twenty minutes I was forced to restart as well. The third time it started up and showed no signs of changes made and system profiler still says its Version 10.5.8
Although I pride myself in being rather street smart with computers, I am not book smart whatsoever so just go easy with the big words.
Any ideas? Thanks

Theres 36 Gb Available out of 90 Gb, could my hard drive simply be too old?
That's plenty of free space but the startup disk most likely needs repairing. If you can, launch Disk Utility. That's located in /Applications/Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab. Click: Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If the disk needs reparing, if you can, you will need to use your install disc and follow the instructions for Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks
could my hard drive simply be too old?
If you can run Disk Utillity, check S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom of the window.
See if it shows Verified.

  • How do I create more room on my MacBook Pro so I can install Snow Leopard?  It says it needs 5GB and I have 4.something.

How do I create more room on my MacBook Pro so I can install Snow Leopard?
I've only got 4.something GB left and it says it needs 5 GB?
Which then begs the question, will I be able to do anything with the computer.
I think I need to get some stuff off, but do not know where to look up what is taking up the most room.
I have an extra hard drive.
    I have iDisk.
I have a Time Machine, but it backs up one of my three Macs.
    Thanks.

A utility like GrandPerspective is a good one for seeing what is taking up space on your hard drive.
Video and photo files tend to take up a lot of room.

  • Macbook Pro won't install Snow Leopard

I am having trouble installing Snow Leopard on my Macbook Pro. I currently have Leopard 10.5.8 installed. I contacted Apple after my first issue. The tech support person decided I had a bad DVD & sent me a new copy, but the issue remains the same. When I try to upgrade I get as far as approving the user agreement and then the installation screen disappears. I tried installing using the DVD as the start-up as recommended in the installation instructions. When I do this I get as far as selecting the destination, but the hard drive has the yellow triangle with the exclamation point and says Mac OS 10 can't start from here. I have used the Disk Utility & Disk First Aid to check my hard drive & it checks out ok. Any ideas what I should do?

You could try doing what I call a repair install of Leo--installing Leo over Leo via upgrade. It is possible that you can reinstall Leo this way, and your problem will be fixed, even though you can't install Sno (yet). Also, you could try the Leo install from your desktop rather than having started to the DVD. I can't assess the probability that using this technique will solve your problem. I think it definitely is less than 50%. And, I emphasize that you may not even be able to do the repair install.

  • White MacBook won't install Snow Leopard....help!

    Hi,
I have 10.5.8 installed on my white MacBook (2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) computer.
I'm trying to install Snow Leopard, but during the installation, a message pops up saying "Mac OS X Snow Leopard cannot be installed on this computer".
Will 10.6 not work on this laptop?
    Thanks!

You need to use a retail disk and not one which shipped with another Mac.

  • My Mac won't install Snow Leopard?

    Hello!
I own a 13" MacBook Pro, which I bought in 2010 (I think it's the mid/late 2009 model). It came with Snow Leopard.
When Lion OS X was launched, I downloaded it, and have been using it since then. To be honest, I've not liked it at all because it's a lot slower, and I don't really like all of this resumé business. I've only kept it because with University, i've not had much time to downgrade back to Snow Leopard.
But basically, I've got the time this week, and tried to install Snow Leopard yesterday - I tried this by inserting my original disks which came with my MacBook Pro, restarting the Mac, then pressing Option (Alt) to bring up the start-up disk stuff, and wiping the hardrive.
Yet, after wiping the hardrive, after asking it to start the Snow Leopard disc as the start-up disk, it wouldn't. The Apple logo loaded, the little loading wheel thing underneath it did, and it just stayed like that for ages - you could hear the disk spinning, then after about 5-10 minutes, the screen went black and I had to turn the laptop off.
It kept doing this so because I wiped the hardrive, my only option was to go to the Recovery disk and re-install Lion.
I'm thinking there could be a problem with the disc drive, but it works fine if i'm burning CDs/DVDs, or install software and that. So what is it that's wrong? Am I doing something that's wrong?
There's nothing wrong with the MacBook Pro discs because when I put them in the laptop when I've got Lion, it loads and asks if I wish to install Snow Leopard - of course though, it won't let me.
    Cheers.

  • Battery update 1.4 won't install snow leopard

I bought a used macbook 2.0 2006 model. The battery in it was dead when I installed snow leopard. Now I have a new battery, but it will only charge to 92%. So, I installed battery update 1.2, which did nothing for the problem. Then I tried to install battery update 1.4 but  could not get past the install screen. Is it because I have 1.2 installed and should I go to system core service and delete update 1.2 then install  update 1.4

I have an update to my own post. Since I have a newly puhchased copy of Snow Leopard, I was able to call Apple tech support. Hear is what I found out from them. Battery update 1.4 is not compatable with Snow Leopard, it stops at Leopard. I still don't know why  update 1.2 installed.  I tried all the other things that Apple recomeds such as reset system management, zaping the pram and draining the battery.

  • My airport on my old MacBook is not working since installing snow leopard.

I installed snow leopard last week and started having problems maintaining connections to wifi. It got to the point it was not connecting at all. I have tried all the suggestions posted on online forms to no avail. I finally reinstalled Snow Leopard and have the same problem. I find this very upsetting as I have bought uniquely apple products for the past 13 years. I buy only apple software and I think as a loyal customer I deserve better than this....

I have tried all the suggestions posted on online forms to no avail.
Please describe in detail all you have attempted to do in order to resolve the issue in case there were things you missed.
I think as a loyal customer I deserve better than this....
I'm a loyal Chevy car owner and I am treated no differently than a first time Chevy owner.  Apple is just like any other huge corporation, they treat all their customers the same.  Doesn't matter if you're loyal or not.
    Mac OS X (10.6)
Use Software Update to update your os and anything else that needs to be updated.  You are seriously outdated for Snow Leopard.

  • Computer won't install Snow leopard 10.6.3

I am trying to upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard.
    I have an imac desktop running 10.5.8. 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo / 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    Bought snow leopard install disc.
Disc starts to install and after a few minutes says "install will continue after restart."
    Computer restarts
    Disc ejects
My about this mac still reads the same infoMac OSX 10.5.8
Why isn't it upgrading to 10.6.3?

I don't think you did anything to cause the problem. It means the directory on the startup volume -- this keeps track of all the files on the drive --  is out of whack. I thought it might be the reason you couldn't install. If the computer came with Leopard, it should have come with the Leopard DVD.
You need to run Repair Disk.
Since you don't have the Leopard DVD to boot from to repair the Disk, several possibilities: if you have a bootable clone on an external drive, you can boot from that and run Disk Repair from Disk Utility there. Or you can boot into Safe Boot, which will run a directory check and try to repair the drive that way, if possible. To start up in Safe Boot, hold down the shift key when you hear the chime. Safe Boot will take much longer than a regular boot, so give it plenty of time.
If that won't work, then have a look at "Use fsck, if necessary" here. Keep running it until it comes up clean.

  • New MacBook Pro - How Can I install Snow Leopard?

I have a brand new MPB from Apple that comes with Lion pre-installed. I didn't ask for this, even though I ordered the computer a few days before Lion came out.
Lion has been a disaster, from random crashes, to breaking software (including Apple's own Motion and Cinema Tools), to draining the battery after 3 hours or less. Does anyone know of any way possible to put Snow Leopard on this computer? I have the SL install disc (10.6.3), but I get an error message that it cannot be installed. If I try to start from he disc, I get a kernel crash.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

I am not sure if you will be able to go back to a lower OS if could be built into the firmware to not let this install happen.  You can give this a try, You will need to start the system with your Mac OS X 10.6 snow leopard dvd then format the drive with disk utility, then do the install.

  • MacBook Pro Crashes after Installing Snow Leopard

I just installed Snow Leopard on my macbook pro that I've had for 5 years and ever since every app that I open crashes upon opening it. If it does not crash, it'll open the application but render it completely inoperable. The computer also loses mousetrack and keyboard abilities. This happens every time I restart my computer. My computer is also no longer under warranty and cannot run without power cord. Nothing seems to be working correctly since the update. Time to start looking at a new computer? Easy fix? Any suggestions are much appreciated. Thank you much.

    J-UST-91,
which version of Mac OS X was installed on your MacBook Pro before you’d installed Snow Leopard? Was it working flawlessly under the older version? Do you make a backup of your disk just before installing Snow Leopard?

  • Installing Snow Leopard from Macbook Pro on a desktop MacPro?

So in a few days my new Macbook Pro will arrive (old powerbook's screen committed suicide). Snow Leopard and iLife will be installed as well as the discs of these programs. I have a Intel Mac Pro that is still running Tiger along with the old iLife stuff. Can I use the Macbook's software discs to install Snow Leopard and iLife on the MacPro desktop?

This is asked here frequently, maybe once a week, so you might want to search Discussions for more info, but the slightly longer answer than already posted is:
    1. The license that comes with the software included with a new Mac prohibits its use with any other Mac.
    2. The installer discs that ship with Macs include technical measures to prevent users from violating that license provision.
If you want to run Snow Leopard & the upgraded versions of iLife on the older Mac, you need to buy licensed retail copies of each for that. Snow Leopard is only $29. iLife '09 is $79 from Apple, less from some online retailers like Amazon.com.

  • Cannot install Snow Leopard on a new HD in MacBook

I have an older white MacBook that I want to install Snow Leopard onto again. I swapped the existing harddrive back to the original one I received from Apple when the MacBook was purchased. Before putting the hd into the MacBook I made sure to partition and format with Mac Journaled.
During startup I put the Snow Leopard disc and press C to boot from disc. Slowly but eventually, the Snow Leopard process begins. My MacBook cannot seem to detect the HD that is in the machine... When I run Disk Utility, it does not populate but the DVD drive with the Snow Leopard disc is found.
    Any suggestions?

What you are saying boils down to the MacBook is not recognizing the HD now installed in it. (Regardless of the formatting, Disk Utility should at least list the drive if it is communicating with the MB's hardware.)
Open the MB & make sure the HD is installed correctly, if necessary by removing it & reseating it, making sure connectors are fully mated, nothing is interfering with its fit into the space for it, etc. Close everything up & restart it, listening for any sounds that indicate the HD is spinning up. If not, it may have been damaged. You can also run the Apple Hardware Test from your original grey system disc set (see the label of the disc for instructions about how to do that if necessary) & see if it detects any hardware problems. If so, make a note of the error code & report that.

  • Can't install Snow Leopard on MacBook Pro - DVD won't mount

I am unable to install Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro as the DVD won't mount.  This is an early 2008 vintage MacBook Pro, intel core duo...
I'm using a OS X Snow Leopard install DVD (family licensed).  This DVD has been used to install 3 other Macs in my house without a problem (about a year ago), but cannot be used to upgrade my MBP.  Actually, this disk mounted on the MBP exactly once - inserted with system up, the disk mounted.  Upon running the installed (a year ago), the computer restarted but hung in boot.  After getting the disk ejected and the computer restarted, the disk would never mount again.  I've defered upgrade for a year but at this point need to upgrade my MBP at least to Snow Leopard and possibly Lion.
The problem doesn't seem to be with the DVD, since it continues to mount fine in other computers, and in fact a borrowed Snow Leopard DVD also will not mount on the MBP.
BUT ... the problem also does not seem to be with the optical drive in my computer, as it can read & mount the install/restore disks that came with the computer as well as other CDs and DVD ROMs.  Only the Snow Leopard install DVDs fail to mount.
I've also tried mounting the 10.6 install DVD on my Mac Pro desktop, making it available over the network (ethernet) with DVD/CD sharing.  I can mount the remote disk from my MBP that way, but when I launch the installer, the application launches (its own menus are displayed, I can quit from menu, for example) but does nothing -- no windows open, nothing.
I've also tried "Remote Install" (again with the DVD made available with the Remote Install MacOS X application on my desktop), but when I boot the MBP with option held down, the remote disk is not available as a startup disk.
Zapping the PRAM did not help.
Am off to the store to get an optical drive cleaning kit and a blank DVD big enough to burn a new disk image, but would appreciate any further ideas at this point....

Solution that worked: Copy the Install DVD to a USB flash drive and boot from that.

  • I installed Snow Leopard on my Macbook. Now it won't finish bootup.

I installed Snow Leopard on my Macbook. It said the install completed perfectly, but now it won't finish booting up.
It just sits on the start-up window with the spinning wheel and the apple logo. I can't even eject the install disk or anything. I waited for 7 hours before giving up and just turning it off. I can't bring up any options or anything... am I done for?

  • Older Macbook won't start after attempting to install snow leopard

A friend of mine with a pre intel notebook inadvertently tried to install Snow Leopard and now it won't start up.  Any suggestions?

    Hi DOGG,
I'm not sure if he erased...  When you power it up you get the gray screen with the apple logo for a few minutes then it shuts down.  I put Leopard in and pressed the C key while starting up and I got the Installer but my only choice was to erase everything and install or erase and journal or something like that.  It shows that there is 23GB disk space remaining and 185 total so I was hesitant to proceed because it looks like maybe everything is still there.  Then found my old Tiger install disk and tried to start from there and it just kept powering itself off after a minute or two.  I read something about the Tiger install disks were specific to different models so maybe mine isn't compatible?  Anyway, I've asked him to find his install disk so I can try that.  But if it sounds like his hard drive is erased should I just go ahead with Leopard?
