MacBook (1st Gen) Freezes and Loud Fan

Hello. I have been using my 1st-generation MacBook (1.83GHz Intel Core Duo processor, 2GB RAM) every day since I bought it back in July 2006. I replaced the hard drive (which I upgraded about 1.5 years ago; it was a 320GB 7200RPM drive) a little over a month ago when it failed. After replacing the hard drive with another 320GB 7200RPM drive, things continued to work fine for a while. However, I notice a few things. For one, sometimes when the fan turns on, I sometimes hear loud crackling noises (it's hard to describe; sometimes it feels like there is a turbine inside of my computer). Secondly, sometimes when the computer is sleeping, the fan is on full blast and I am unable to wake it up; I'm forced to power it off. Finally, I occasionally notice some random freezes. I could be using the computer, and then suddenly the mouse pointer won't move, pressing buttons on the keyboard do not result in any actions, and the display doesn't change. I haven't had this problem before.
I wonder what is wrong. Could it be that my computer is aging (it will be five years old in July), or is there some other underlying reason (it might give a clue to the hard disk failure that occurred last month).

Welcome to Apple Discussions...
I would start with the Apple Hardware Test (AHT)
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
....see if it finds anything wrong....remember it needs to be run off install DVD1 that came with your MacBook...run the extended set of tests...
Since several symptoms seem to be power related an (SMC) reset might sort things out...

Also try running the MacBook without the battery....run it on the A/C adapter

  • Mouse+Keyboard Freeze and LOUD fan noise...

    Hi,
Seems to be a few similar threads, so here we go...
Just got my iMac G5 20" 1GB Ram (OS 10.4.3) 2 days ago. All went well and suddenly, mouse + keyboard froze. About 10sec later, the fans kick iun, VERY loud. Never stopped for 2 hours.
If I reboot, shutdown and restart, do all the kind of troubleshooting you can read, it always starts again int he grey screen with the Apple and the fans at max revs, VERY nousy.
Eventually it goes away. But about 1 hour later, same story.
I ran the Apple Hardware test and all tests came PASS but there was originally a memory error POST/0/2048 notice. But the 1GB memory test passed...
Had a chat with the Apple Agent support, said this code shows a hardware component failure.
Have to bring back 10KG of EXPENSIVE Apple HW to the store tomorrow.
Great way to spend Xmas indeed
    Any comments or suggestions?
    Thanks,
    JP

    Hey,
When does this happen exactly? On Toshiba screen or Windows startup screen?
Are you running factory settings or another OS?
I think its hard to say why this happens. It could be software or hardware malfunction
Fact is you can test the RAM modules using Memtest86 or another diagnostic tool. You can ask Google to find it, its freeware. Just download an iso image and create a bootable CD/DVD. If you boot from this disk you can start the test.

Can you tell us how much RAM  (Memory) you have? It's listed by clicking on the  in your title  bar....go to About This Mac and it's in the 1st window.
We would also like to know what size hard drive you have and how much free space is on it.
If you click on your Hard drive icon (should be upper right hand corner of your screen), or the Finder in your Dock...when the window opens it says at the bottom how much Free Space you have on your drive.
If you go to the , click on About This Mac, click on More Info... in that window. The next window says how big your hard drive is under Hardware....click on Serial-ATA.....look under Capacity:
We need to know this cause if a hard drive is too full it slows things down and creates operational difficulties.

Your hard disk is failing and requires replacement. Replacement is not terribly expensive and can be performed by someone sufficiently adept with computer repair. If that's not you, an Apple Store can perform the replacement.
    Back up your data ASAP.

  • My 2011 15" Macbook Pro occasionally freezes and beeps loudly in groups of three. What is causing this?

This problem typically occured when I was doing something particularly strenuous, but I just recently had it happen while browsing the internet. The computer will suddenly freeze and start beeping loudly in groups of three with an LED on the front flashing in sync with the sound. I am running Snow leopar if that has any bearing on this problem. What exactly is causing this?

I did a few things to correct the problem First opened up my unit and cleaned it out really good and cleaned all the dirt and dust out Second I removed all the ram and cleaned all the ram connector and  ram connection points on the board Reinstall OS like a new system scratch and restored my applications Zapped SMC and pram And I'm running smoothly ever sice
At one single problem at all One more thing I got a laptop cooler and I run full-time now when using my system. I spoke to a techie and told me all MacBook Pros run very hot. It seems to run a lot better with the cooling fans going.
not a single problem ever since. Make sure you have the latest ML to, Some fixes to memory controller were added.

  • Late Macbook Pro getting hot and the fan is getting louder

My Macbook is getting very hot and the fan gets louder the longer I have my Macbook on.
It happens whenever and wherever I use it, I don't play games often as I use my Macbook for my Uni work.
    Does anyone have any advice?

It would help if you indicated the EXACT model MBP that you have.
    Perform a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If no success, open Activity Monitor to ALL PROCESSES and set %CPU to display values from high to low.
Download from the Internet a temperature monitoring app like Bresink:
    http://www.bresink.com/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html
Post images of both for inspection.
Open the MBP and look for dust an debris inside it, especially in the fans.  Clean it out if necessary.
    Ciao.

  • MacBook Pro Not turning on, loud fan

My friends 13in MacBook Pro won't turn on. The light on the bottom near the remote reciever is on and there is a very loud fan noise.

If the light is on and the fan is running then the system is on, even though you can't see anythinig on the screen.
Press and hold down the power button for 5-10 seconds to shut the system down. Once that light goes off and the fans stop spinning try to start it again by just pressing the power button once. If you get the startup chime and something on the screen then it might be ok and it was just hunge. If there is nothing on the screen and it doesn't give the startup chime thenn the system needs to be taken to apple to be looked at and diagnosed as to the problems with it.

  • Macbook pro running slow with loud fan

    Hi,
I have my macbook pro for about 2 years now, and in the last couple of months it started running slow, and the fan gets really loud even immediately after startup.
I ran the disk utility, clean my mac, and disk inventory, and I deleted large files. I have about 35GB free (out of 250GB). I use CS5 and Parallels Desktop, which I thought were the reason for making it so slow, but I usually quit whenever I'm not using them.
I checked the console and I found repeating messages about Chrome. It's the one application that's always open... so I guess it might have something to do with it..?
    Here's the message:

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Your drive is still pretty full so that could still be a factor. You want 15%-20% free space for the OS to work well.
Open Activity Monitor and see if you have some process hogging the CPU. Be sure to select "All Processes" at the top. If you find a rogue process that is doing that, see if you can quit it. It may even be Chrome, and if it is, quit it and relaunch it. If it does the same thing again, you may want to trash it and reinstall it fresh.
    Good luck!

  • Updated to Mavericks and loud fan noise

Just done a clean install of Mac OS X Mavericks, updated fine, everything went well.
however most of the time, my macbook pro fan noise would go really loud for 5-10mins even in idle or if im on the internet just browsing.
this has not happened ever on mountain lion.
    its really weird.
Does anybody know how to fix this? or is this a bug and would i have to wait for a software update?

    Hello all,
I am having the same issue, constant loud fan noise in my Mac book pro. Below are the specs:
    "MacBook Pro
    13-inch, Mid 2010
Processor  2,4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB
    Software  OS X 10.9 (13A603)"
    And CPU is 90% idle.
I tried to reset the SMC using the steps:
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Plug your Mac in, if not already plugged in.
    3. Press (left side) Shift-Control-Option & the power button at the same time.
    4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
    5. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Inaddition, i have reinstalled OS and reset PRAM memory but the problem still exists.
It really feels annoying with the fan sound. Could someone give a fix.

  • Black screen and loud fan noise-- With Log Info

I am running 10.5.8 on a second gen iMac and am having problems with the fans running super loud, the screen goes black and it cannot be woken up. I have cleaned it out (no dust or dirt) and checked the caps (visually anyway) and they look fine. I am guessing that my power supply is going, but want to check the log (as recommended on the iMac forums) but cannot figure out how to get there. Below is from my log files from the past week.

Shutdown cause 110 is always a thermal problem, which means that your power supply has bitten the dust. It needs replacing, and hopefully, that will be all you need. If you are handy, go to [http://www.jimwarholic.com/2008/07/how-to-repair-apple-imac-g5.php] for instructions on replacing it.

  • Hot computer and Loud Fans

My macbook pro has become hotter than usual and also the fans are much louder. Any suggestions on how to fix these problems would be helpful.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
There are a couple of things you can check if you are worried about this:
Open Activity Monitor (in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder) and check for any hung up process which might be running in the background and hogging the CPU. Be sure to select "All Processes" at the top and "CPU" on the bottom bar. Sometimes a process will hang up and hog the CPU, causing extra heat and fan activity.
Also, run the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test and see if anything shows up in the form of an error code.
When you say "hotter than usual", is there any new activity going on that's associated with the heat and fan speed? As eww said, if you are doing something processor intensive and the Mac gets hot and the fans speed up, that is exactly what is supposed to happen.
    Good luck!

  • HUGE 2.0 software problems on both a 1st gen iPhone and new 3g TWO BRICKS

So I waited in line for several hours for the new 3G yesterday like most people get it home and it had the occasional random program crashes etc. No big deal par for the course for being first on the block with a new device - even a Apple product.
My headache started with turning my "old" 1st Gen 16gb phone into a iPod. I installed the 2.0 software through iTunes and all went well until I was testing it out and it restarted. Weird since it gave no problems before. No big deal since I could go back to iTunes and restore it right?
    Wrong.
    Dead wrong.
It will not get beyond the Apple logo restart screen (yes I left it alone - even over night). I tried different computers, restarting the computer and iTunes. Also tried reinstalling iTunes - nothing works. Okay no big deal since it just going to be my extra iPod.
EXCEPT A HOUR LATER MY 3G IPHONE STARTED DOING THE SAME THING!!!!
Now I have two 16gb iPhones that will not restart or restore - AND NO CELL PHONE SERVICE.
Very, very frustrating. Even as a huge Apple fan I can't recommend this product until it's bit more fully developed.
Now waiting for technical support for well over a hour . . . Thank god I didn't go ahead and cancel my home phone like I have been meaning to.
Any one out there have any ideas?

It looks like a 3rd party application might be the problem.
The good news is tech support got me back on track. The secret? Power down the iPhone, then press and hold down the home button while connecting it to the computer with iTunes up and running. This will get you to the recovery screen. You should be able to then restore the phone. I would say be wary of some of the applications out there.
