MacBook 2.0GHz Intel Duo 2 Core Performance

I'm about to upgrade to a new MacBook and was just wondering what kind of performance I'm getting myself into!

well you should probably take a look at the specs in a different way. I have both a dual G5 2ghz and an MBP C2D 2.33, the MBP is definitely faster to run logic than my desktop machine is, period. I open a logic song (on an external FW800 drive) on the G5, then I open the same song on the MBP, and the CPU usage bars (both the logic ones and the activity monitor ones) don't go nearly as high on the MBP as on the G5. sure this isn't scientific testing, I'm sure there are little discrepanies here and there, but as far as it all averages out in actual real world performance, I'm afraid I just had to let go of my prejudice that a tower just had to be faster than a notebook. the mac pro is a different story, but I'm afraid the MBPs smoke dual G5s..
btw, i've mentioned this before on this forum, but I was at an apple briefing earlier this year in paris put on by apple for audio industry pros. it was run by a great german guy from the original emagic who still works in the logic team, and he had parallel setups of a G5 quad and a macbook pro (1st gen). the mac pro desktop was not out yet. basically, the laptop was not far behind quad's performance, running a big logic song with many audio tracks, lots of instruments and EXS vienna orchestra instances, all with a good quality H264 video file playing in logic. the MBPs disk performance was working a lot harder... but, it was all running on the internal drive, including sample streaming, so that should not come as a surprise. of course it's not ideal to work that way, but to see it could be done was impressive to say the least. so, it follows that these machines especially the new ones really do outperform dual processor and dual core G5s in real world running of logic situations.
if you're interested, there's a thread here somewhere of people playing a logic song with instances of sculpture playing 16 note polyphony constantly. this is of course a much less balanced test than what I saw at the briefing, but in terms of seeing processing grunt for CPU-intensive audio instruments, it's enlightening. the MBPs are getting higher plug in and polyphony counts than the dual G5s, and also the quad, unless people use the node trick to make the quad use its extra cores more effectively.

  • Are the older MacBook 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 802.11N ready?

I'm looking into buying an "older" or "last generation" MacBook 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.
I seem to remember reading that even though it's 802.11g ready, there is a firmware update to bring it up to 802.11N...True or False?
If True were would I find that info?
    Many Thanks!

Not sure if the older models have n or not...
But if they don't you can purchase the "n" function from the apple store:

  • New refurb MacBook 2.0Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo shutting down...help!

Refurbished MacBook 2.0Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, White 1GB RAM, combo arrived yesterday. Running Jaguar. Ran fine out of the box on battery power for about 3 hours till the battery ran out when it shut itself down. Now its shutting off with the button gently pulsing, every few seconds. Won't stay up long enough to get at system prefs or anything else for that matter. One very disappointed 10 year old in our house. Any known issues or fixes? Thanks

Are you sure its running Jaguar? Maybe you meant leopard?
Have you charged the battery already? Try to connect the power adapter and see if that allows you to turn on the computer longer. If the same issue persists, reset the SMC following these steps:

  • Lion and Apple MacBook 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (13-inch Black) MA701LL/A

Anyone here tried to upgrade the MacBook 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (13-inch Black) MA701LL/A Laptop/Notebook to Lion?
I wonder if this laptop has enough power to support Lion.  So far I upgraded the memory to its max of 2G.
    according to this page:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD256
it should work, but i wanted to get some feedback from users.
    thx

That folder with a question mark means your computer can't find the hard drive. It's possible the drive is physically damaged, but it may also be an error in the system files that has the computer "lost."
Do you have your install discs handy? If so, pop in Install Disc 1 and hold the C key while booting the computer. Once the Installer loads, choose "disk Utility" from the Utilities menu. Does your Hard drive appear? If so, choose the Repair Disk option. If you see any messages saying something can't be repaired, post the messages here. Also check the S.M.A.R.T. status of the drive; this is in the lower right corner of the window.
    Best of luck!

  • Need advice Imac G5 Intel Duo 2 Core 2ghz will not power up DEAD

Hi all. Hoping for some friendly advice. I have an Imac G" Intel Duo 2 Core about a year old or so. My adult son was using it. Never a single issue and a very mild user. He reformatted it the other night and turned it over to me because he got a new one. I'm thrilled since I'm still using my G4 733 I've been faithfully keeping in operation since April 2001 with almost no issues. The only thing I have done is allow it to auto update everything the night before last. It's set to sleep the screen after an hour and the whole thing about 2 hours. Been working fine and just touch the keyboard and back to life.
Well this afternoon went back to take some more tutorials and it's just dead. As if it had gone to sleep but no amount of button pressing helped. Unplugged everything on USB, firewire. Using apple bluetooth KB and mouse that came with it. Both had new batteries as of other night. Left power cable loose for 10-15 minutes and no help. Held the single power button for long periods, tried holding it while plugging in to wall, tried other wall outlets. Wiggled chord to see if flakey... read articles on resetting some macs but nothing helped so far.
    Thanks
    LB

Well update I did finally get it to come on after a couple hours of coming back and fiddling. In efforts to fix it I looked up the number on the stand and it looks to be made mid 2007 which means likely no warranty.
I popped out the memory under the little bottom edge cover and dusted off some of the woolies. Didn't help but I blew into the round fan vent on the rear and a good bit of dust even came out the top edge vent. Looks like my son gathered some dust in this thing.
Still thought it would not come on but pressed again and suddenly it's ON and working but the cooling fan seems to be stuck on fast mode. I can't see any way this thing is having heat problems in my office which is a little warm but not hot.
So likely will take into service to clean and dust it out etc and maybe this fan will begin running right. This iMac has never given one ounce of trouble either. I'm posting this using the iMac
    Any additional advice appreciated,

  • 2006 Macbook Pro 17 inch duo 2 core backlight keyboard not working

I have a Macbook Pro 17 inch model MA611 L/A 2.33 duo 2 core.  I recently had to change the hard drive and when I put everything back, the backlit keyboard is not coming on.  I have reseted the SMC, downloaded labtick, and can see F9 and F10 light up and down setting on the keyboard.
It's not coming on.  I double check to make sure that the keyboard ribbon is on securely.  The keyboard is working as I am typing this post on it.
Nothing seems to be a problem other than the backlit keyboard not coming on.  Is it possible that the LED light is broken even though everything on the keyboard works normally?
Am I missing something?  Anyone have experience like this?
Any help or clues would be appreciated.  It is really bothering me and is annoying not having this feature at night.

A Core Solo or Core Duo Mac can go to Mac OS X 10.6.8. A Core 2 Duo or better can go to Mac OS X 10.7.2.

Any ideas what gives? I'm new to iMac and so far the experience has not been good ... the Apple applications (i* apps, safari, mail, dashboard, finder, even system preferences!) keep crashing hard with kernel exceptions. Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Usually when it's the Apple apps that are crashing,
it's often a font conflict. Printers, scanners and apps load on fonts
that may cause problems with the original font setup.
A quick way to check that is to:
Launch Font Book and check all fonts for duplicates.
A duplicated font will have a bullet beside the font family.
You can resolve duplicates by selecting the each bulleted font
(one at a time) and at the menu bar, go to Edit > Resolve Duplicates.
If you try the above, and still have problems,
I highly recommend that you post this over in the Intel Based iMac Forum
    here:

  • Do current models of MacBook Pro have Intel 2ND GENERATION core processors?

I have observed the tech specs on numerous models of MacBook Pro, but it says nothing about 2nd generation processors. I assumed that they did have 2nd gen processors as the image they use to advertise the processor is for the 2nd gen series of Intel core processors. I just wanted to confirm this belief.

Ah, OK, thanks. So the "generations" are the architectures (Nehalem, Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge) rather than the individual Core updates.

  • Will ram from a MacBook 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo work on a MacBook 2.0GHz Int

Will ram from a MacBook 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo work on a MacBook 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo?
    MACBOOK   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Yes, both machines use the same type of memory.

  • Can I upgrade to ML on a MacBook White 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo?

I have a MacBook White 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2GB SDRAM running Mac OS X (10.5.8). It´s not in Apple´s list of upgradable computers, but anyway, can I upgrade it to ML?

No. it's not listed as compatible for a reason.

  • Noise (fan and/or drive) MacBook 2.4 Intel Core 2 Duo 2GB 160GBHD

    I recently acquired a MacBook 2.4 Intel Core 2 Duo 2GB 160GBHD.
It is always making noise, (quite obvious, fan noise).
    It is annoying.
Compared to my iBook G4, this thing is rather noisy.
Quite honestly, I never hear anything from my iBook G4 unless it's required to perform multiple tasks over a period of time and only then the fans ramp up.
    Is this normal?

This may be normal, but try this before making a final judgement:
    1. Go to System Preferences/Energy Saver/Options and set it to Automatic.
    2. Download SMC Fan Control for free:
    http://homepage.mac.com/holtmann/eidac/software/smcfancontrol2/index.html
    And set to 3000 cycles.
That done, see if the sound shows any improvement.

  • I have a new 2.0GHz Intel Core i7 macbook pro and my external firewire drive is causing the laptop to lock up

I have a new 2.0GHz Intel Core i7 macbook pro and my external firewire drive is causing the computer to lock up. The drive seems to sleep and then never wakes and the laptop locks up. I've had this drive connected to an older 2.0 core duo macbook pro and a 3.0GHz quad core macpro with no issues. It's a ministack v3 drive, 2GBs, fw400+800, sata and usb. Any ideas? And can I stop the drive from going to sleep?
    Thanks.

Check with the drive's manufacturer to see if they might have a firmware update for the enclosure; it sounds like the enclosure's firmware isn't properly detecting the FireWire wakeup sequence.
Obviously this could also be a bug with the new MBP's firmware, so it wouldn't hurt to ask the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store; in particular, ask them to show you that the sleep/wakeup sequence on your MBP works with some other FireWire drive.

  • Im still running 10.6.8 on an old MacBook 2.4 Intel Core 2 Duo. Questions about 10.7

Im still running 10.6.8 on an old MacBook 2.4 Intel Core 2 Duo. "Genius" said I couldn't upgrade to enough memory to use 10.7. Doing ok so far except my bank/credit cards no longer support Quicken. If I switch to 10.7.x, what will I LOSE? I don't do change well, and really hate surprises. I understand scrolling goes the opposite way, that Search works differently, and that I'll have to update some of my software, for example, and then THAT software will be different. For example, does anyone know if upgraded 10.7.x is as fully functioning in Quicken 2013 as old OS and old Quicken, for example? Will it communicate with my banks?? That, and general frustration with tired-computer issues would make the switch more appealing.
    Thank you all very much.

Thanks. Why would I "insist" on Lion?
You mentioned Lion in your post so I assume that you may have reasons for using it in lieu of Mt. Lion.  I actually do so for technical reasons regarding my Internet service which will not run on Mt. Lion.    If you do not have such a constraint, then Mt. Lion is an acceptable choice.
    Ciao.
You may start an new post regarding the rest of your issues.

  • I have a MacBook Pro with Intel Core Duo and Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Want to upgrade to Lion to take advantage of icloud. Is there anything I can do without getting a new MacPro?

I have a MacBook Pro with Intel Core Duo and Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Would like to upgrade to Lion but it requires a minimum of Intel Core 2 Duo. Can I get what I need or do I have to buy new MacBok Pro?

I also have a core duo MBP with Snow Leopard and it runs perfectly.  There are very few things it cannot do as compared to the faster, newer MBPs, but that is attributable to the CPU, not the OS.  There are some who view Lion as downgrade rather than as an improvement.  If there are important applications that reqire a fast CPU or Lion features that you find essential, by all means get a new MBP.
I have an aphorism:  Obsolescence is more often a perception rather than a reality.  Besides the silver keys look much classier than the black ones.
    Ciao.

  • MacBook Pro and Intel Core 2 Duo?

    Hey there everyone,
It is great that Apple is announcing the Intel Core 2 Duo, but when would it be available in the MacBook or MacBook Pro?
I am starting school in January and would like some time to use my new MB or MB Pro, but don't want to make a decision to buy and have the next gen processor avail next week...
The special with the free iPod Nano or reduced price iPod ends September 16th. Why are people waiting until next Tuesday, September 12 to make any purchases...I hope no bombshell will be dropped on everyone.
I was totally prepared to get my MacBook or MacBook Pro tomorrow, but VERY hesitant now.
Any advice? Am I making a big deal out of this? Will I EVEN notice a difference between the Core Duo and Core 2 Duo?
The main reason I am not buying a MB Pro is the heat issue and yet the Core 2 Duo is predicted to be cooler...
    Help!!!

    Wow great advice so far!
I was never into forums and discussion boards, but since I was buying a Mac again (the first was an LC II...for those who remember) I thought I would check the discussion board...yikes! Great one way, but information overload on the other.
TRUE there will never be a better Mac and to buy for what you need at the moment. Heat being a huge issue why I haven't purchased a MB Pro, it now seems as if the Core 2 Duo will not run much cooler which is a HUGE purchase deciding factor for me. The MacBook seems to run cooler for sure.
If I get the Core Duo MacBook/Pro with Tiger, can I upgrade to Leopard when it comes out in spring? Will they be compatible as I am not sure what 64 bit processors really do?
I can definately wait until next Tuesday to make my purchase, but I will only have until the end of next week to get the education special with the iPod at a huge discount...of course Apple is clearing stock for new iPods surely. The 30 gig video iPod ends up costing 115.00 CAD...can't beat the price that's the thing.
Since heat is such an issue for me with the MB Pro this means I will be leaning towards the white MB and it SEEMS unlikely they will be upgraded as they only came out in May/June.
All I want is to say I am on top of the computer game at the current moment (if possible) even if it only lasts 5-6 months. I am upgrading from an old Windows ME system, Pentium III, 128 Mb RAM, 733 Mhz processor...about 6 years old. My how much has changed since those times.
I am really not trying to make this decision difficult on myself...really!
You all are great for providing some great advice!
