Macbook 2006

I have a problem with my MacBook 2006 it doesn't what to start up. I don't know what to do. It used to go until the blue screen but it will stay in the screen didn't go to my home page. Now it just stays in the gray screen flashing a gray folder with a question mark. What can i do to fix this problem?

That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
With 10.4, 10.5 or 10.6 put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is, then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions. After repairing use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for restarting from your hard drive.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

How do I know which Hard Drive to get for my MacBook 2006? The old Hard Drive is a Toshiba (MK8034GSX) S/N Z6APT2XUT 9H5 EC. A?

I've put a 250gb 7200rpm drive in an Early 2006 with no problems.
    For a new hard drive try Newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=380&name=Laptop-Hard-Dr ives&Order=PRICE

Here are instructions on replacing the hard drive in a MacBook with a removable battery. http://creativemac.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=45088
To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.bombich.com/index.html You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.

Help I have a Macbook 2006 model and I like to play videogames on it, well when I leave it plugged in it gets the best performance, when its not plugged in its decent, so will it hurt my battery if I leave it plugged in at all times?

No, it will hurt your battery, but it is not recommended by Apple. Additionally, since you have a model with a removable battery, you should calibrate the battery once a month if you leave it plugged in at all times.

  • Two of Three internal speakers arn't being used in Black Macbook (2006)?

    Hi,
I probably tinker with my Macbook too much, however I noticed today that sound is only coming through the one internal "woofer" speaker, or the speaker that faces up at the F8 key.  When using the internal speakers, not using an external output in other words, the two stereo speakers that face back toward the lcd screen on the left and the right sides of the case do not emit sound at all.  I've checked the connections of each, I've played with settings in the System Preferences, and I've tried several different settings in iTunes.  I cannot get the Macbook to use those speakers.
Is there some software glitch in the Kernal or Firmware that is preventing these from being used?  Or could it be a hardware or sound card issue?  I have no idea.  It isn't something critical or anything, the single speaker in the middle works fine, however, I imagine the Macbook's internal audio quality and volume would be much improved if it were using all of the speakers installed.
    Any ideas or thoughts?

  • Macbook 2006...freezes

    Hey guys
My friends Macbook computer had problems with freezing. Sometimes it would freeze at the apple logo on startup....and freeze ALL the time while using it...internet browsing, ichat, anything possibly even nothing. I figured I would reformat the whole computer clean and wipe everything out for her, since she doesn't want anything backed up.
I put in the install dvd, booted it, erased all the data on the disc from disc utility and started a fresh install....halfway through the install it froze! I tried to restart the computer but it kept freezing on me at the apple logo, until I got to the utility again.
You think the hard drive is bad? Because I am at disc utility now zeroing out all the data.
    Thanks
    And its a Macbook 2006
80GB HD 1GB RAM with Snow Leopard.

All that Disk Utility checks with repair disk is the directory on the drive. That doesn't check the hardware.
What does Disk Utility report as the S.M.A.R.T. status of the drive?
Personally, I'd invest in a replacement hard drive and see if that cures things.

  • Why cant i charge my ipad 1st generation on my macbook 2006

My daughter gave me her 1st generation ipad which is in mint condition but she couldnt send me the wall charger.  She also sent me a macbook 2006 which works great except the battery needs replaced.  I have an apple ipod classic and the usb cord but I can get the mac to recognize the ipad but display says not charging.  Is it charging or  do I need a specific ipad charger?  I was able to connect it to my old computer but it would only charge to 40% because i dont have the right amount of power.

The MacBook more than likely does not supply enough power through the USB post to charge the iPad either. That's a 7 year old computer and that would be my guess. Apple includes that wall charger for a reason, and that's because they recommend charging that way.
You can purchase the power adapter just about anywhere that sells electronics .... Online at the Apple Store, Amazon, eBay, etc.

I have a macbook 2006 its hard drive was not working anymore so i install a new 500GB hard drive but now i just need the software. Which one should i buy?

    Snow Leopard 10.6 Technical Requirements - http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
You can buy Snow Leopard at:
Snow Leopard disc source - http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
You could contact Apple Support and see if they have the original discs for that machine but it would be 10.4.11 and there's no reason not to go to at least Snow Leopard, especially since the 10.6 discs would probably cost the same as a replacement set of 10.4.11

  • Random crashes MacBook 2006

Hi everybody, I have a white MacBook 2006 with 10.7.5 installed.
I have replaced the battery, replaced the thermal paste on the CPUs and run Apple Hardware Test. Everything works as it should but if I pull the power cord off it crashes after a while without warning. If I have the power cable on the computer makes a sound after a while, I think it is the DVD burner but is keeps running.
I would be very grateful if anyone has any suggestions on what it might be causing this.
    Thanks!

    >makes a sound after a while, I think it is the DVD burner <
Well since you seem comfortable going into the computer, go back inside and pull the connector to the DVD burner. That burner shouldn't be running unless there's a fault or a disk is stuck.
Also remove all third party hardware attached to the computer.
Also there was a shutdown issue with this model and Apple released a SMC update. Check that your SMC has been updated to version 1.1 or later.
    Reseat your RAM
Is your computer in the serial number range  xx617xxxxxx - xx635xxxxxx? If so there was a shutdown issue with this model.
    Did some research:
    http://maba.wordpress.com/2006/09/01/macbook-shutdown-solved-at-last-hopefully/
So that could have been the problem that caused the recall. A piece of kapton tape might solve your problem. There's always some floating around inside a Mac.

  • I have a macbook (2006) with 10.6 snow leopard installed. Can i get EA's origin and sims. It has a Intel Core 2 Duo

I have a Macbook 2006 with 10.6 snow leopard installed. I was wondering if i could get EA's origin download and sims 3 the game? The laptop has an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor.

Unfortunately no, I have e exact same problem. Our ancient laptops are to the full extent of upgrading available for its time..., I'm trying to find an older version of origin to download to my Mac at the moment... Take my email if you want and if I come across anything ill send you the link. The only other thing I can think of is to upgrade the entire Mac software to the newest version but that includes wiping out the entire system and hard drive and locating the software disc to do that and I'm not even sure if it will process all of that information since apple conciders our laptops "vintage" there's no way to go back because they don't support the software for these older ones anymore.
    Sorry.

If you need to extract the drive's content you can remove it and install it in a $10 USB enclosure. It will be readable by any recent Mac.

  • Macbook 2006 fan issues , someone please help!!!

    Hey there,
I'm curently trying to repair a freinds macbook 2006 1.8ghz. The fan orignally was rattling then ti stopped and the macbook turned it self off to prevent overheating components. From this i belived it just to be the fan as the issue, so ive replaced the fan . Turning back on filled with optimism and temperature gauge is telling me that the fan is not in action.
I have also reset the SMC i believe , followed the steps and reset the pVram i also believe.
I do not have access to a hardware test disk for the system which is currently running 10.6.8 (snow leoperd) ..

  • Case Cracks White MacBook (2006)

I have observed cracks on my white macbook (Late 2006 model) case (both insde & out side). Everytime I take an appointment with the Genius, they say that they are so busy to replace the case and they might need at least 3-5 business days. Since I did not have an alternate computer, I have delayed a bit. Now that I recently got a iMac, I would like to turn in my macbook for repair. Not sure if apple has spares to repair the cracked outer shells. Any idea how long and how much it costs to get it fixed ? Or can I return my laptop to get some store credit and buy a new Macbook ??

Only Apple would know that.  Also, ask Apple.  Not going to happen.  You can't return a 6 year old mac and expect to get a store credit.  Since the repair volume of the store seems to be high, get an estimate and leave it there for repair if you find the price of repair to be acceptable.
