MacBook 2010 (white) freezing during boot up with 4 Gb RAM

I have a 13" MacBook 2009 (white) with 4 GB RAM installed by Apple. I upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard without a hitch. However, when I upgraded to LION, the computer initially started to freeze sporadically during regular usage then simply froze just before the login screen every time it was rebooted. I took it in to the Apple Store and th Genius staff kept it for 2 days. They tested the RAM. Turns out that the MacBook only recognizes 2 GB of RAM now. Doesn't matter which 2 GB stick I put in which slot, it freezes on boot up. The computer boots up fine with either 2 GB stick in either slot. I would obviously prefer to have the computer run with all 4 GB. I have tried all the steps identified in the article "Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup" http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2570 to no avail, including the last step, "Perform an Erase and Install installation of Mac OS X as a last resort." I have searched through the Communities and tried all the suggested fixes. Nada. I have also upgraded to 10.7.3 which came out last week and retried all the steps. Again, nothing. Has anyone had a similar problem and, more importantly, found a fix? FYI, the computer is no longer on Apple Care and so replacing the motherboard is not an option. Thanks!

  • Freeze during boot after enabling Hyper-V feature in Windows 8

    Good day.
I'm using AMD FX 8320 with 990FXA-GD65. After enabling hyper-v my pc freezing during boot.  Google told me that it might be issue with USB 3.0 controller, so i disabled it in bios, but result still the same.
Can you please tell me where should i look at?

    Hi,
Please try to boot into WinRE and run the Startup Repair option.
Generally speaking, when you add feature like Hyper-V, system would take a long time to get this feature configured. if your computer still stay updates configuration steps, you can use Windows 8.1 installation image to repair system. In system repair mode,
you can access into Command Prompt mode, and check CBS.log under C:\Windows\logs\CBS.
This log file would record Windows installation process, we may find the problem of Hyper-V installation.

  • HP Pavillion p6240f freezes during boot up - Not enough space in Runtime area!!

    Hello,
My HP Pavillion p6240f desktop freezes during boot up.  After POSTing and listig the USB connections, it displays the following on the bottom of the screen:
Not enough space in Runtime area!! SMBIOS data will not be available. Press F1 to resume.
I went into setup, and this is the BIOS data:
AMI BIOS revision 5.16  BIOS Date: 01/13/2010
    Core Version 08.00.15
Can anyone help me?  I have found no solutions after heavily searching the internet, and it is important that this computer have unattended reboot after a power outage.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    Try clearing the CMOS.
If the above doesn't work then remove two of the four dimms (every odd dimm) and then again clear the CMOS. If this should work then power down and reinstalled the two dimms and again clear the CMOS and reboot.
If the above doesn't work then you might have to visit the local PC repair shop.
If you can get unattended boot after power outage to work then there is a bios setting that needs to be changed. Boot into the bios and look under the power drop down. The after AC power failure needs to be set to AUTO (restart). Be sure to save the settings.

  • Macbook 2010 froze and wont boot primary ssd

My macbook pro 2010 froze all of a sudden and i forced it to quit with the power button held. That shouldn't be anything exceptional. Now the computer does not boot to primary ssd or even notice it with cms pressed, from secondary windows hdd or from usb live linux. any suggestions? Ssd still has its warranty but there are valuable stuff in the ssd which I haven't been able to backup copy because of studying abroad.. Any ideas? I will be back home in a week for a while and will open the computer and trying to reattach the ssd if nothing else won't work.
I've tried pressing cmd alt p r, cms shift v and shift and just alt. Nothing seems to find the missing ssd. The computer sis not move, it sis not run out of battery, it shows only white screen after booting sound but after that nothing, and a bit, longer it finds the secondary windows hdd. the OS is Yosemite. Or was.. Just if I could recover the files..

Based on your comments, your HDD is dead.  Get a new one, larger and faster if can afford it and swap in your MBP.  You will have to reinstall your OS and I hope you have a back up of your data.

  • MDD DP G4 elusive diagnosis - freezes during boot up.  Tired- HELP!

After not using my Dual Bootable  DP 1.25 GHz MDD G4 for a couple of months, it's now freezing during the boot process.
What's weird is that it boots in Target Mode just fine, and when connected in this mode to my G5 Quad, it actually boots the G5 Quad in Target Mode just fine!    The G4 drive shows in fact as the boot drive on the G5 Quad's monitors.
I was able to boot off a retail Tiger 10.4.6 disk, so I did an erase and install of a fresh Tiger OS 10.4.6, which I promptly updated to 10.4.11.  After trying and failing umpteen times to boot off the HD, even in safe mode, I ended up being utterly unable to get either of the Super Drives to open normally, so I had to resort to the straightened paper clip trick to retrieve the install DVD.
Now even the paper clip fails to open either of the optical drives.
I have twice wiped the HD from the G5 Quad after booting up in Target Mode, and installed fresh copies of Tiger 10.4.11 as described, with the Tiger install DVD in the SuperDrive of the G5 Quad.
Since in Target Mode the G5 Quad boots just fine of the G4 HD, I think I can rule out the Hard Drive.
I think I can rule out the battery too, as it boots fine in Target Mode and in the regular boot process it sometimes gets as far as playing the OS fresh install music after going through the registration process.
I do have the original install disks with AHT 2.0.2 that came with the G4, but I can't get the optical drives open to insert the disk in either one of them.
I'm thinking it could be bad RAM, but why would the optical drives be stuck, both of them??!
I'd be most grateful for any tips as to what to try next.

Jump all hard drives Cable Select and place the intended Master on the end connector of each IDE ribbon (each bus).
Can you clarify, please?  Are you referencing the actual CPU?
Yes. A very fine layer of corrosion on one or more of the 300 pins could render the machine incapable of achieving logic.
The step should be performed after doing all the other reseats that I suggested.
    I've never re-seated one,
    Not so difficult.
Replacement of the thermal compound is a requisite part of the proceedure, however.
    Use Arctic Cooling MX-4.
No worries if a bit too much is applied, unlike silver based compounds....... bzzzZZTT! Dead CPU.
    My tutorial:
    9AE7FE0E-0CF2-4A7C-8003-489B282582BC.html
I posted this for someone who wanted to remove a MDD logic board (edited for clarity, I hope):
To remove the logic board (of a MDD):
-Disconnect all cables connected to the logic board.
-Remove any PCI cards, and RAM.
-Find and remove the five screws that hold the heatsink. Remove the heatsink.
-Remove the processor board by lifting the edges of the daughter card. After successfully pulling the card free from the connector, it might help to slide the processor board a bit to the rear and/while lifting out, being careful to clear the two mounting pegs.
-Find and remove the one screw that holds the logic board.
-Slide the logic board away from the back panel, lifting to avoid the chassis hooks.
You need to pay attention to the three steps in bold. There is no screw retaining the CPU daughter card. It is sandwiched between the heatsink and the logic board socket.

  • Macbook Pro shuts down during boot

    Hi there,
Few days ago I spilled some beer on my 2 weeks old Macbook Pro... I immediately cleaned it, removed the battery and charger and left it to dry for 1.5 day.
After the drying period I tried to power up the machine, it did work but unfortutanely shut itself during the boot (the spinning wheel) and power button didn't respond again until I removed and re-connect my battery. Tried everything such as Nvram/Pram and SMC reset, single user thing, verbose mode, changing ram dimms but got nothing. It did eventually boot with hardware test but again got nothing as the test indicated that there weren't any problems.
It always shuts itself after "Checking catalog file" in the verbose mode.
(The machine shuts itself even when I try to boot it with os x installation disc so the only thing that I can reach is the hardware test.)
(To tell the truth I don't know if I succeeded creating a bootable installation disc as I did it under windows.. I'm hoping that I failed and that it can actually boot from dvd drive)
Did I just screwed my logic-board, if so how can I run all the tests.. Any suggestions?

    egunay wrote:
Actually the computer is 2 weeks old, I spilled the beer 2 days ago.
Immediately disconnect all peripherals, power cord & remove the battery.  Turn the computer over with the lid partly open and the hinge facing upward to let the liquid drain.  Do not flop it over and lay it flat - you want to separate it from the moisture.  Place paper or cloth towels under the machine to sop up the mess.
After the computer disgorges whatever you spilled on it, don't turn it on for 72 hours or longer.  You want to computer to dry out completely before turning it on again.
Some users here swear by hairdryers.  Blow drying the innards may bake whatever was in the liquid onto delicate computer components.  Better to let the computer air dry.
Use plain tepid water to clean out the computer.  If you spilled iced beverage more than likely this ice fried the hot motherboard.
Sugary, acidic or milky drinks will almost always cause problems later on as the residue starts slowly corroding the computer innards.
Swab down any sticky parts with distilled water or denatured alcohol.
If none of the above works, you will need to take the computer to a repair shop.  Apple Care does not cover liquid or food damage.  Believe me, they can tell.  So the old "my computer stopped working" line is not going to work.
In order to not void your warranty any further, take it and let the staff clean it.  It's worth it for a 2 week old computer.   In the future, avoid eating and drinking while using your computer.  Will avoid future heartache and expense.

  • MacBook Air shuts down during boot

My Macbook Air (OS X Yosemite - Early 2014) automatically shuts down during boot, with the screen flashes during the loading bar at 40% and then shuts down. I've tried to reboot many times but it wouldn't get past the 40% on the loading bar.
I've also tried the following but none worked:
The Apple Hardware Test shows that "There may be an issue with a memory module." (PPM002, PPM003, PPM004) - though I've checked that the reference code and the definition doesn't match, as "There may be an issue with a memory module." should be PPM001, and PPM002-PPM015 should be "There may be an issue with the onboard memory.". I've sent this message to Apple and they'd only provided the option to visit their retail store.
Also, the Recovery Mode isn't much help either. As do not have a backup of my HD, I'm not able to restore from Time Machine Backup.
So, I've tried to reinstall OS X Yosemite, but it says "Unavailable to install OS X". A website online says that you can resolve this issue by correcting the date through terminal, but the basic menu bar won't appear, in which I'm not able to access Terminal during the Recovery Mode.
Therefore, I've also tried the Disk Utility, which it shows it can't be repaired, with the following messages: Invalid Node Structure (4, 57963), and 2 messages regarding the Invalid Extent Entry (4, 47013) and (4, 40808). The Single User Mode with the command fsck -fy yields the same message.
Is there any other options then to visit the Apple Retail Store?

      Invalid node structure
I'm pretty sure you need more then Disk Utility to repair the drive.

Assuming you have Snow Leopard installed, you can try reinstalling the Mac OS but you'll have to do this from another Mac.

  • Macbook Pro 17" restarting during boot screen

This seems to be an on going problem for people. From the threads I've read I could not get a solution.
My Macbook is turing on and plating the chime, but the screen has been covered in loads of  square patches of purple dots. The Apple logo appears on the grey screen and the wheel starts to turn. What happens is it will do this for a minute or so and then freeze or more often restart and do the same thing again until i force it to turn off.
I have tried all of the below already
         - Safe Mode (fails and restarts)
         - Single user mode (disk repair command as I could not do it through the graphical interface)
         - Reset using cmd+option+r+p
         - Recovery by holding Option during boot (again freezes or restarts)
I would use a disc to a reinstall but my optical drive is broken and I do not have access to an external one. I realise I can use a Bootable USB but I only have access to a Windows for the time being. Its probably worth mentioning that was watching a video on Youtube when the whole laptop froze and starting repeating and jerking and then shut down. It has not worked since!
Can anyone suggest any other posible solutions please?
    Thank you

This seems like a hardware issue.
All we can suggest is run a #3 Hardware Test, write down what it says and take it into Apple for a free eval.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
5 year old machine? I'd say it's the video card going because the cooling fins behind the fans haven't been cleaned, heat damage is irreversible.
Not worth fixing, buy a new machine.
You can extract the drive and use a SATA to USB adatpter and Migration Assistant to a new Mac.

  • [solved] Hard disk security parameters freeze during boot

    Hi fellow archers!
Currently I am trying to pin point a problem I have. I have an old PC of mine setup as some kind of experimental playground. My problem is that the security options of my driver become frozen during powering up this PC. It is a fresh and empty Arch installation with just sshd running and no services has been installed that should set the drive security-freeze. I am trying to figure out who is locking it, my current suspicion is the mainboard/BIOS itself, but I need to be sure, that there is no script during executing Arch boot setting the freeze parameter. -- Oh if someone one if the ASUS A8N32-SLI is doing such nasty stuff, it would be great to know.
Thanks in advance for your feedback

Hi, it's not really a fix for the problem, but I now know what happens. It is really the mainboard BIOS who freezes the security state of my hdds. So what I did was to build a power switch for my hdd. During boot I switch the power and linux will detect the sata drive (haven't tested it with IDE drives) and I can work with it.

  • Vipower SATA controller freezes during boot-up

Hi, I have a MSI 648 Max mobo.
I bought a 160 Gb Maxtor SATA HDD and Vipower VP-9601 SATA PCI host card. Problem is that when I boot the machine, the Raid Bios Utility freezes when it has to detect the HDD. This happens before I can enter the mobo bios. If I unplug the HDD during boot-up, (I still have my old HDD) it works perfectly, so the only problem seems to be a compatibility issue with the card bios and the mobo. (My dealer has checked the card on a VIA chipset mobo, and it worked fine).
Does anybody have any experience with SATA controllers on the SIS 648 chipset?
BTW, Vipower is the lousiest IT company I have ever encountered. No replies on the e-mails, not even a phone number… :(
    My rig:
    MSI 648-MAX  bios version 1.4
    P4 2.4 533 NW

Do you have any additional USB 2.0 Enhanced Controller PCI card sitting in one of the PCI slots?
If you have, please try removing it and try to install your RAID card as USB 2.0 PCI card are quite well known for IRQ sharing with other PCI cards.

Copied iTunes folder to new MacBook Pro.
Connected iPhone to sync with new MacBook Pro.
    And ...

Some apps in iPhone are partly installed because of freeze.
When i delete them they appear again during next sync and then iTunes freezes again.
    What i already have tried:
    # Clean iOS install --> again and again
    # Recover from older back-up --> again and again
    # New user
    # New iTunes install
    # Delete iTunes preferences and cache
    # Delete all apps
    # Reset permissions on the user in repair center
    # select: "Prevent ..., iPhones, ... from syncing automatically"
