MacBook 4,1 Firmware Restoration.

Here is my problem. I recently had gotten my MacBook Repaired at a certified service store. After having it repaired, my battery stopped working. Now, It didn't stop completely; The computer itself cannot recognize that there is a battery installed, but if the power cord is knocked out the computer will continue to run as if it is on battery (screen dims... ect.) Now this wouldn't be a problem is the computer would still charge the battery. Since it doesn't recognize there is a battery inside, It doesn't charge it. Once the battery is drained, It's gone for good. Ive researched problems with the computer and called Applecare. They told me to reset the Pram and SMC with no fix. I see the computer has the latest SMC update installed and I am thinking I will need to use a Firmware Restoration CD to get things back in order. My problem is there doesn't seem to be one made for my specific computer. Why all of a sudden would they just skip a generation of MacBook and leave it high and dry to suffer problems like this? Does anyone know of If they even made a Firmware Restoration CD for this model?
Thanks in advance!

I really wish this got answered.  It's my exact issue.
Did you ever get it worked out Doomaix?

  • MacBookPro4,1 Won't Boot OS X/Firmware Restoration CD?

I have a MacBookPro4,1 (2.5GHz). Because the LED was cracked, I removed the hard drive, installed it in a Mac Pro, installed OS X 10.7.5, and put the hard drive back into the MacBook Pro. The computer now powers on, the grey radian starts turning, but it never boots into OS X, not will it boot into the recovery partition. It will not boot from an OS X install disk or from it's own system install DVD. It will boot into Console/Single User Mode, it will boot the AHT from the install disk, and it will boot from the ASD EFI partition--but not the ASD OS partition. If the computer is started in Safe Boot, the grey progress bar one sees during firmware updates appears, progresses 25%, hangs, then disappears, and the computer doesn't boot. While it was booted into AHT and ASD EFI, all the diagnostic tests were run and all were passed.
Do I need to restore the firmware (although there appears to be no Firmware Restoration CD for this model). I would re-install the OS but I can't get it to boot from any OS X install media.

Clearly you have to get the MBP to boot from some device, and the internal HD isn't cooperating. Unfortunately neither is the DVD, which is disturbing and indicative of some unknown problem.
That leaves FireWire Target Disk Mode - can you connect it to your Mac Pro? I know from experience that another Mac started in Target Disk Mode will appear as a bootable device using Startup Manager, so try it.
I suspect that installing OS X on a HD installed on the Mac Pro, then removing it and installing it in the MBP may not be successful. If you connect the two, then boot FireWire Target Disk Mode, you should be able to download and install OS X specifying the MPB as its target system.
Try resetting the NVRAM. It contains startup disk information so corruption may have unknown effects.
I can't find a firmware restoration CD for that model either. You may need to see a Genius.

  • MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.5.1 messed up my laptop

Software update just told me to install MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.5.1 a few minutes ago, and I followed the directions, having no idea what it was supposed to be doing to my computer. I hit "Shut Down", then held down the power button until I heard the beep. After the beep, the screen stayed black and the LED light just stayed constant. Then I turned the computer off using the start button again, and tried to turn it on. The hard drive or CD drive started to click rhythmically and the computer did nothing. The screen stayed black.
I then tried to restore the previous firmware, but that doesn't work. It said to hold the button until the lights flash fast, then slow, then to insert the restoration CD, which I did. It buzzed like it was going to start up, then did nothing and I got no progress screen. It still just sits there black with that power light on. Anyone got any ideas other that going to a Genius and paying hundreds of dollars?

I followed the EFI instructions exactly as it stated and had a major problem.
Basically my problem was that the EFI did not completely successfully. It left the system in a half updated state. Unfortunately, they had to replace my entire system board. I have Apple Care so it was replaced at no charge. I originally called Apple Support and they had me try the usual things like restoration cd, reset PRAM, reset NVRAM, etc. Nothing worked. I brought it down to my local Apple store but they more or less do the same thing. They had to send it out to be fixed. Sorry, but it sounds like you're in the same boat.

  • Macbook pro EFI firmware Update 1.4 won't work, neither will software

I got two probs, not sure how related they are.
#1 is that I can't successfully do the macbook pro EFI firmware Update 1.4. My computer was bootcamped and kept restarting in windows - thus the update was not completed - the completion bar would pop up for an instant - i could not see if it had completed, i don't think so... and then it would flash back to black, and restart again. Upon restart the firmware update was still there as needing to be updated.
I've now taken bootcamp off and restored a single drive. It's doing the same thing and hasn't updated.
#2 is that DVD studio pro will not boot anymore after it has been working with no problems for over a year. Nor will Motion run although it has never worked. I have tried reinstalling multiple times and just today went to delete the preferences. No luck.
Any suggestions or better yet, solution, I'm ever so grateful.
    Cheers

I have the same problem. It's also important to note that, in my case, I'm running 10.7.2 (11C74), but it's a firmware update, so it shouldn't really matter if I'm running a beta version of Lion, should it?

  • Firmware Restore CD problem

    Hi,
I've got a MacBook 3,1 that's suffered a failed firmware update. I've tried using the Firmware Restoration CD for this model, but it just seems to hang. With the wrong CD (I got the model wrong at first) the optical drive spins up briefly, and then back down, and the machine reboots and does its S.O.S. beeps again. With the correct CD in the optical drive spins up for substantially longer, then back down, then nothing happens! The machine stays "on" (power light is lit) but the screen is black. This is kind of hard to debug as the screen backlight is on the way out and I was using this machine with an external display - I can usually get it to work with some movement of the screen, but I haven't been able to in this state.
I note the firmware restoration CD notes say it cannot be used to downgrade from a successful firmware update - I wonder how it determines that its been "successful"? Is there any way to get/or make a firmware restoration CD with the newer firmware? I tried putting a copy of the .fd file from the firmware update package in the root of a CD (as this appears to be all that the firmware restore CDs are) and that did not do the trick.
    Any ideas?

wadyasha that post is almost 2 years old. I would figure the op has moved on.
Start a new topic with your issue. There is no firmware restoration cd. As eww said to the op "Leave it to the Genius. Start mucking around yourself, and you may put the machine into some anomalous state that the Genius can't get it out of."

  • Problem with firmware restoration CD

I have a dead MacBook Pro (mid-2010 15" i5) that went through a failed firmware update. I found and burned the Firmware Restoration CD 1.7 that is needed to reset the firmware.
The problem I have is with the procedure itself as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL77
    7. Turn on the computer and continue holding the Power button. The sleep LED will blink rapidly, then slowly, then rapidly (3 quick blinks, 3 slow blinks, 3 quick blinks). On Macs that don't have a sleep LED, tones are used instead. Hold down the power button until you hear 3 long tones, then 3 short tones, then 3 long tones.
    8. Insert the Firmware Restoration CD while the lights are blinking or tones sounding, then release the Power button. A long tone is played once the recovery process has started.
The MBP does not have this behaviour with the sleep LED. I hold down the power button, the sleep LED flashes rapidly for about 1-2 seconds and the I hear the boot chime and the MBP tries to boot normally from the HD. If I try to insert the CD while the light is flashing, the MBP just spits it out.
What is the right procedure to restore the firmware with this particular MBP model? Thank you!

The MacBook Pro 15" Mid 2010 has a model identifier "MacBookPro 6,2" and isn't listed at the link you provided, it's the wrong firmware your using.
    Here's the correct version

  • Data on ipod classic shows up as "other".  I REFUSE to restore it cuz the music is not backed up cuz my macbook had to be restored and that wiped my itunes.  I don't have the cds anymore. How do i get my music back??

So my old ipod broke two years ago.  I got an ipod classic and synched it to my itunes library on my macbook.  Then I had problems with my macbook and had to restore it to factory settings.  I have kept my eyes open for a way to get my music backed up in my itunes again cuz I figured this ipod would probably break someday too.  Anyway now when I look at my 160g ipod classic, it says I have 0 songs, and 0 videos but 27.3g of "other".  I looked around for a solution and I tried updating my itunes and then I plugged my ipod in and it said I needed to restore it to factory settings using itunes.  I'm not gonna do that.  For the most part I have come across this problem with solutions for pc users and I have a MACBOOK.  Anyway I haven't even had my ipod hooked up to my computer for a while because I haven't added any new music and when I charge it, I just hook it up to my iphone charger.  This literally happened overnight.  I mean there is some stuff on there that is irreplaceable.  PLEASE HELP!
p.s. Dumb it down a bit for me.

Restoring an iPad from an iTunes-generated backup should not require an Apple ID password.
Did you encrypt the iPad backup? If so, then trying to restore will require entering the encryption password.

  • My iphone is stuck in restore mode.  I plugged into macbook and ran a restore and it is still stuck

iphone is stuck in restore mode when i did a rebook.  I hooked up to my macbook and ran a restore.   Itunes ran through the restore and now it is still stuck in restore mode.

If it won't restore in the regular restore mode, you may want to try putting it in DFU mode if you haven't already. Instructions for this are linked below.
    http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1034
Put it in this mode, then do a restore again through your computer.
    Hope this helps you out!

  • Drive On Mac Pro Won't Open For Firmware Restoration?

    Hi--
My Mac Pro (early 2008 model, OS 10.6.8) has recently begun having problems that seem firmware-related. When put in "Sleep" mode overnight, it wakes up on its own after about two hours of sleep and remains awake.  Also, from time to time it will display the prompt window ("Do You Want To Shut Down?") for a hard (button) shutdown---without the button having been pressed. Resetting the SMC and the PRAM solves the problem for awhile, but it's becoming necessary to do that more and more frequently---at first, the problem occured about every six months, then weekly, until now I'm getting the shutdown prompt and have to reset the SMC almost every day.
Internet searches of this and other forums have indicated that a possible solution is restoring the firmware.  I have made a Firmware Restoration CD but I cannot get the machine to recognize it. That is, when I press and hold the startup button I get the "three long-three short-three-long" beeps; according to Apple's FAQ on ths subject, the optical drive door should then open and allow me to insert the Firmware Restoration disk, but that doesn't happen--the computer just goes right on with the normal startup sequence.
    Please advise.

all I can do is tell you what I've learned here-try either one of these-hold down the shift key on startup/hold down the mouse on startup/if not,  See if you can boot up in single user mode/reset NVRAM,(command option, o+F)on reboot . Failing that....pull down the optical drive door, and using a straightened extra study paperclip, find the small hole near the optical drive tray. Stick that paperclip in and the tray should open up just enough for you to grab it and put the cd in there. Maybe then, start up holding down the C key......
    just a guess though
    Good luck to you

  • MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.3 update freezes mouse pointer

After installing the update released today 5/28 (MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.3) my mouse pointer stalls, freezes on occasion. Very annoying. Anyone seeing the same. Fixes ... ?

After applying the SMC Firmware update a few days ago, my keyboard and trackpad were acting erratic (freezing, hanging). It was immediately after the update and I had not had any problems with it before.
I have also had random crashes, inability to use the keyboard/trackpad ever since.
Today my keyboard and trackpad are completely unusable, external mouse works fine.
I will take it to an Apple store tomorrow, hopefully my firmware can be reverted.
Sounds like a lot of other people are having problems with this update. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9549034&tstart=0#9549034

  • MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.0 will not install.

    Hi
The latest MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.0 will not install.
It runs and I restart my Mac but when I search for more updates it appears as a required update again.
Anyone know why this may be?

I had the same problem today. I called Apple support who transferred me to second level support and no resolution. I decided to try a combination of the items I have seen below.
I restarted my computer. I went to apple support download and downloaded the software EFI firmware update 2.0 by typing in search window. I made sure the power cord was pulled into the wall and the laptop had a FULL charge. I installed the update and the computer restarted.
I went to check the software update window after the update and restart completed and SUCCESSFUL.
I do not know why the Genius Bar or the second level support could not resolve my issues but, by me reading information here I hope at least this issue is resolved.
    Thanks ALL.......... Happy Mac ing

  • MacBook Air SMC Firmware Update v2.0 update available again and again.  How do I fix it?

I have installed MacBook Air SMC Firmware Update v2.0 three times and I still get an update available notification asking to install it again.  This is a mid-13 MacBook Air running OSX 10.9.3.   System info lists the SMC version as 2.13f7.
Does anyone know how to resolve this issue?

    Hi,
    - Are there any status or error messages in /var/log/install.log
    - The Firmware version it should install is 2.12f137
    - If there isn't anything in the log try:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    and/or About NVRAM and PRAM
and check whether there is installation.
If no install, try OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode
then reboot normal, try the install again.
    Hope this helps

  • MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.0

    Hello,
I receive regular updates of the "MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.0" software. Each time I download, restart and let the update install. Each time it says update istalled succesfully... Yet each time I get the upgrade notice.
Worse now, iTunes says there is a software upgrade. But when I want to download it again I get the EFI upgrade announcement, but not the iTunes upgrade downloaded...
I've done a complete maintenance run, repair, rebuild, etc... but same results.
Thanks for any hint on what may be going wrong or how I can fix this.

I copied the version number from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1331. That may be a misprint or typo on Apple's part. I'm posting a message asking about that in a special forum available only to level 4 or 5 users that sometimes gets replies from the folks that maintain those articles.
If I hear anything that confirms that, I will post back here, but for now I think it is safe to assume "B05" is correct.
