MacBook 4,1 - optimum OS X version?

Hi
I have a MacBook 4,1, Intel Core 2 Duo 2.1GhZ, with 1Gb RAM, running 10.5.8. I'd like to upgrade the OS as far as possible to extend the useful life of the machine, which is in good working order, as long as this won't compromise performance, which is currently excellent.
I have ordered a Snow Leopard 10.6.* upgrade. Should I also upgrade to Lion 10.7.*? My understanding is that the machine won't run Mountain Lion 10.8.*.
thanks for your help
Bill

Once you are at 10.6.8 Lion is still available from Apple. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. to purchase it. Then within 3 days you will get an email with a code which you can use to download Lion from the App Store.  The price is $19.99.
Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly. The model 4,1 (Early 2008) can use 6gb of 200 pin 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM
As for third party programs see this list for compatibility with 10.7 http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Also Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.
These are good online stores for Mac compatible RAM
OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/MacBook/DDR2/ - They offer Mac tested RAM at very good prices.
Crucial Memory http://www.crucial.com/ - good place to buy RAM from all over the world. They also have an excellent memory selector that allows you to choose memory based on your computer's model
Data Memory Systems http://www.datamemorysystems.com/apple-memory.asp - another good, cheap place to buying RAM if you live in the U.S.
Here are instructions on replacing RAM in a MacBook with a removable battery. http://homeoffice.consumerelectronicsnet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=44404
If you don’t have the tools to open up the MacBook OWC has a set for $5.

First check that your Mac meets the System requirements for Lion...

Be sure to make a Backup of your Current System Before Upgrading...
Also... Check here for compatibility of 3rd party Software you may be using... Also note that Rosetta is no longer supported in Lion.

You should also consider more RAM... Lion is a hungry beast...
You can use these Links to check which RAM is suitable for your Mac...

If in the UK... Go to http://www.crucial.com

    Snow Leopard = OS X 10.6.x
It is Not available as a download... It is a Paid Upgrade.
    Do this first...
Check that your Mac meets the System Requirements for Snow Leopard...
    Snow Leopard Tech Specs
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
If so... Purchase a Snow Leopard Install Disc...

You can force quit by holding the power button down for extended period.
During boot up hold down the Option key and choose your Macintosh HD OSX.
In >System Preferences> Startup Disk>choose your internal OSX System as Default.

When I connect my iMac to my Macbook  via "Go" I see multiple versions of my iMac.... I mean LOTS!  They just keep growing!!

Sounds like a cable problem. Try another cable and another USB port too.

    64 bit.
32 bit won't use all your computer's ram.
64 bit allows you to run 32 bit programs
    Your computer is 64 bit
    New programs use 64 bit.
There is no reason to use the 32 bit version of Windows.

  • Hi, i'm Architec and my basic programs are: Autodesk Architecture and 3D studio Max. Can i run it in the MacBook Pro 13.3-Inch  (NEWEST VERSION) Thanks!!!

Hi, i'm Architec and my basic programs are: Autodesk Architecture and 3D studio Max. Can i run it in the MacBook Pro 13.3-Inch  (NEWEST VERSION) Thanks!!!

You can but make sure you upgrade your RAM to 16GB - you can't do that through Apple...
Autodesk is a memory intensive program and the same goes with 3D Studio Max.....
Another suggeston if you must use a 13 inch is to buy the base 13 inch Macbook Pro and upgrade the RAM to 16GB and install a SSD to make it perform fast.
Another option is to get a refurbished 15 Inch Macbook Pro and do the RAM upgrade yourself...Advantage going 15 Inch is because it has it's own discrete graphics adapter rather than the built in Intel video.

  • Can I install IWorks 9 on my new MacBook Pro along with the free version now included ?

I have IWorks 09 for my Mac desktop. I'm purchasing a MacBook Pro shortly and would like to have the same version of IWorks on both PCs. Can I install IWorks 09 on the MacBook which comes with the new version of IWorks pre-installed ? Or, can I delete the free version and install the 09 version ? I'm relatively new to Macs so this is probably a beginner question.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
New Macs don't come with iWork preinstalled. You have to download it from the Mac App Store.
What you can do is to use Migration Assistant to transfer the files you want, and include Applications, so your iWork apps will be transferred. You will be asked to transfer files from another PC or Mac during the setup of the MacBook Pro.
Then, open the Mac App Store, go to Purchases and download the new iWork applications versions free of charge. By doing this, you will have the old and the new version

Hello everyone! I have a MacBook Pro with 10.6.8 version (Snow Leopard), and I'm trying to update the system in order to have iCloud (OS X Lion or Mountain Lion)? Can anybody help me?

Hi Neil! Thanks for the info, but I read some of the other MacBook Pro questions like mine and I realized that my laptop on has 1 G (memory) and that's part of the reason why it doesn't allow me to install it! Thank You for responding to my question, I really appreciate it!

  • My Dad gave me his old Macbook Pro and I downloaded another version of Lion so it's tied to my ID and it worked but I cannot download and iLife apps at all? It doesn't even give me a choice to purchase it just say accept?

My Dad gave me his old Macbook Pro and I downloaded another version of Lion so it's tied to my ID and it worked but I cannot download any iLife apps at all? It doesn't even give me a choice to purchase it just say accept? And gives me a dropbox that says that these apps are tied to another ID and I need to log into that ID in order to download it.

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico my first language is Spanish. I do not speak English, however I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.
This is a common issue with second hand Macs. The iLife apps came bundled free on this Mac and they are registered to your dad's Apple ID. The only way for you to acept them into your Apple ID is for you and your dad to contact Apple Care, explain that he has passed the Mac to you and ask that the iLife apps be released from your dad's Apple ID so that you may accept them into your Apple ID.

Are you running your Mac on battery or is it plugged into a power outlet?  In order for the firmware to update, it must be plugged in.  From the kb article you posted:
The power cord must be connected to your MacBook Air and plugged into a working power source.
If it is not connected to power, your system will just restart without giving any sort of message.  They should probably make it a bit more clear that your system must be plugged in.
If your Mac was plugged in, we'll need to look further.
